Devils In The Details

The salary cap breakdown of Trent Williams 2-year, $50M contract with the 49ers

• $48.5M GTD • $22.2M signing bonus & 2026 salary/workout bonus are GTD • 2027 base salary & $11M bonus GTD • 4 void years added Trent Williams signed a two year, $50 million contract with the 49ers on April 20, 2026, replacing his prior contract he had with the team. $48.5 million is guaranteed. Williams received a $22.2 million signing bonus and his 2026 salary, per game and workout bonus are both guaranteed. In 2027 Williams base salary and an $11 million option bonus are guaranteed. The team has until September 1 to exercise the option or convert it to a roster bonus. If Williams is on the roster on September 1 of 2027 and does not hold out or miss any offseason time he will earn an $11.5 million roster bonus in 2028 that will be fully guaranteed if earned. There are effectively four void years for salary cap purposes. The contract is designed to have a post June 1 treatment in 2028. The 49ers have until the 10th day of the league year to terminate or extend the contract and prevent a $50.175 million 2029 roster bonus from becoming fully guaranteed. There are also per game bonuses worth up to $900,000 per year and a 1st game $500,000 bonus for 2027.

  1. TW deserves every penny. Now, the 49ers need him to stay healthy. Perhaps take him out on certain alignments for a breather.
He needs to be ready to roll in the post season.

    1. Remember Alex Boone complaining about Harbaugh's methods after reaching the Super Bowl citing, "we already climbed that mountain"? None of those players on this roster. Every one of them is hungry to get it done!!🏆🏈

  2. Kyle Van Noy on free agency:

“I would really like to play with my little brother Fred Warner with the Niners. I think they got something cooking over there".

    1. Van Noy would be a good addition. As I outlined when discussing which UDFAs may make the roster, there's still an open spot at the DE/ OLB position.

  3. Seahawks sign Fowler. Would be funny if we respond with Joey Bosa.

  4. I have a feeling that other than a reaction to an injury the 49ers are done with trades or signings. They need to roll over all of their cap space to pay for all of the salaries they have back loaded

    1. All $60M+? I don't think so....

    2. They'll definitely try and carry as much over as possible. But I think there's room for another impact player if they want to.

    3. Agreed Scooter, I'm talking carry over the $58M which would leave them close to $10M to sign a player and still have enough left to react to an injury or trade. Plus, they still have a couple contracts they could restructure for even more room.

    4. They also need to sign the rookies - not sure if that's factored into current salary cap #s or not. But yeah, can add an edge and maybe a TE and still have $40M+ to carry over.

    5. Should have added safety as an option too.

No big dollar deals I'd imagine, but some guys that can compete for playing time.

    6. Before the updated salary cap they are 10M in the hole so they will definitely carry some over.
I expect them to sign a few vets post june 1 and then again post week 1 to limit the guaranteed money. One of those signings will likely be at Safety which should not cost a a lot.
As for Rookie class they probably need somewhere around 12M.
Van Noy is an interesting option and could be a fit but SF will likely be fairly strict with the salary options here.

  5. This is a really interesting contract to unpack. In reality it is a 2 year, $50M contract. However it is structured to pay him $24.5M this year, then only $14M next season. The remaining $11.5M he will get paid when they release him in 2028 (it is a fully guaranteed roster bonus for 2028 if he's on the roster in 2027). But they have to either release him or negotiate a new deal in 2028 or they owe him another $50M in 2029.

Can see why it took some time working the particulars out.

Taken By Force

Many reasons why the 49ers are on the low end of forcing turnovers, but what is the number one reason in your opinion?
