Combine Day 3

  1. The 3 most important factors when evaluating a draft prospect for this regime: Versatility, Intelligence, and Character or VIC.

  2. Friendly reminder that your dislike of Akheem Mesidor as a prospect is due to your concerns about what do to do with him in the year 2032.

  3. Auburn Center Connor Lew was tasked with setting protections at Auburn. Took pride in taking some workload off the QB’s plate. Prides himself on knowing what every OL is supposed to do. Had a formal meeting with Houston.

  4. Tony Pauline has been fairly accurate, and I trust his source on the 49ers having interest in Bell at 27. Tells me they have good news regarding his medical evaluation.

    1. I would be fine if the 49ers take Bell at 27. But, the WR class talent this year could extend into the 3rd rd with a couple of gems making it to day 3.

      Delete
    2. Would be a bad pick that high. Chances of him doing anything for Shanahan in 2026 very low.

    3. Good point, Scooter.
If the 49ers draft a WR at 27, imho, he needs to be a D1S. As much as I like Chris Bell, I don't believe he's a day 1 starter. Also, if Sadiq is there he'd be hard to pass on even if he's a TE. This guy could become a modern day Frankinstien in Shanahan' offensive laboratory, lol.

      Delete
    4. Broncos are among the other teams with interest.

      Delete
    5. TE isn't a position they value that high. 101 is the highest they've drafted a TE.

      Delete
    6. Sadiq can become a non-positional type player akin to Deebo Samuels. Sadiq can conceivably lineup all over the field in a Shanahan offense.

      Delete
    7. Again, with the emergence of Tonges I just don't see them even considering Sadiq at 27. It'd be a total shocker for mine.

      Delete
    8. For those against Bell at 27. Let's say they sign Evans $14M. Draft Bell with the idea to bring him along slow with the likelihood of it being a redshirt year. Then double tap at WR in Round 4. It's possible that's their mindset.

      Delete
    9. Why waste pick 27 on a guy that is coming back from an ACL repair and ran a limited route tree in college? If he was a legitimate top 15 talent that fell to 27 I'd get it, but this is a guy who was probably a borderline 1st rounder even if fully healthy. It would be a terrible pick, no sugar coating it.

      Delete
    10. Even if Shanahan believes he has Julio Jones potential?

      Delete
    11. Huge gamble. Julio was clearly an elite prospect, Bell is an elite athlete. Let's just say if they make that pick and it doesn't pan out, the fuel for changing the hierarchy on drafting will be fully primed.

      Delete
    12. Out of curiosity, what is it about Bell that you like and makes you think he'd be a good pick at #27?

      Delete
    13. Angle eraser and can sit down in a hurry from top speed. Would pair well with Purdy off schedule as well. Not saying it's a good plan or bad but as a plan C or D it could have some viability.

      Delete
    14. It's a terrible plan. There really is no other way to look at it imo.

Bell's strengths are running underneath routes and getting lots of YAC. He's basically Deebo. Comparing him to Julio is a massive stretch. Despite his speed he almost never gets open deep. He's a crossing route and back shoulder specialist. I like him, but he needs a lot of work to be a complete WR.

I also don't think that suits Purdy's game very well. I think he needs guys that reliably get open at the intermediate level.

      Delete
    15. Scooter, where did I compare him to Julio? I asked a hypothetical question.

      Delete
    16. Is it possible Shanahan sees something in Bell that you or I don't? I'll emphatically raise my hand to that without a shadow of a doubt. Has Bell improved each and every year at the position. Yes, he has.

      Delete
    17. Come on. Don't hide behind the "in Shanahan we trust". If that's the case, we may as well close up discussions on the draft and just praise them for the impending glorious draft they're about to have.

      Delete
    18. Scooter, if you feel you're more qualified to assess WR's, more power to you. I know my limitations. As far as your "in Shanahan we trust" goes...well it's gone pretty damn well as far as I'm concerned. If you got better let us know who you like to lead this organization by all means.πŸ€”

      Delete
    19. I feel like having conversations about potential draft options is more interesting if we actually share our thoughts rather than revert back to if Shanahan likes him then it's cool. As I said, if that's the fall back position then there really isn't any point to bothering having these discussions - obviously they'll draft who they think is worthy of that pick. We could use that logic on every single potential draftable player.

Also, he gets it wrong too.

      Delete
    20. I'm pretty sure you're aware this whole discussion began on a devil's advocate hypothetical question I posted to stimulate discussions.

I'm also sure you're aware of historical rights and wrongs in running a franchise to include drafting and how Shanahan's rights far outweigh his wrongs.

      Delete
    21. Yes, I am aware. And thoughts were shared on why it could be a good or bad idea. And then you switched to arguing from the angle of "maybe Shanahan sees something in him we don't".

Let's just agree that it's likely Shanahan and co see things in guys we don't. And they'll draft based on what they see. But it's still ok to have our own thoughts, even if we disagree with Shanahan and co. This will apply to any player, not just Bell.

If they draft Bell at 27 then yes, clearly they see things they really like. To me, it would be a huge gamble and a bad pick. I would then love nothing more than to be wrong.

      Delete
    22. And yes, I also appreciate I overreacted and was quite b*tchy. Sorry about that. Just get a little triggered sometimes when the argument gets overthrown by the ol' 'leave it to the professionals'. πŸ™ƒ

      Delete
    23. Fair enough Scooter. There's a lot riding on this draft. I wouldn't be happy with the plan, but I'd give it a chance if that's what they decided was best. History with similar plans likely points to an unsuccessful hit rate.

      Delete
  5. We are definitely picking one WR in the top 100. We might even double-dip.

I would be happy with any one of the following 5 WRs:

    Chris Brazzell II
    Denzel Boston
    Omar Cooper Jr
    Elijah Sarratt
    Antonio Williams

Tate, Tyson and Lemon will definitely be gone by the time we pick. Eagles (who might trade AJ Brown), Bills, Steelers, Commanders, Chiefs, Titans all might pick WR.

    1. It's funny you mention that. I think the safe bet is $1000 on the 49ers drafting a WR, S and LB πŸ’―

      Delete
    2. LB is iffy for me. If we go after Kendricks in FA, we will not draft an LB in the top 100.

I have a feeling this draft will be heavily tilted towards Offense.

      Delete
    3. Martin's concussion and the draft depth all but guarantees a LB at some point.

      Delete
    4. Add the fact that it's a really good and deep LB class, seems very unlikely they don't draft one at some point.

      Delete
  6. I, also believe that they could do better than Winters. Once Dcords figured out Winters he seemed to disappeared in games. Perhaps, the 49ers need to make a change on their small LB philosophy and look at larger LBs. These small LBs are having a hard time completing a full season.

  7. Lol! Seeing a lot of tweets about how effortless Concepcion made the gauntlet drill look, as if it's a good thing.

It looked effortless... because he put little effort in! He jogged through it. 49ers like to watch the gauntlet but they take note on how fast the guys go through it. Doubt KC gets high marks from them.

    ReplyDelete

    1. To be fair, as an entire group I thought it was a pretty poor showing in the gauntlet. Lots of guys went through it at three quarter pace at best.

      Delete
    2. Do the amount of body catches he makes give you any concern?

      Delete
    3. Hugely. He'll be catching in traffic or close coverage way more in the NFL than he did in college, and body catching just gives defenders that much greater ability to knock the ball away. Add to that his drops and I have real concerns about how reliable a target he'll be on downs where you just have to have it.

      Delete
    4. When it comes to Concepcion, I believe that we are looking at the trees and missing the forest. The forest in this case is his production on the field rather then his events in the combine. What I've seen KC do on the field is 1st level play. He needs to improve on catching but that can be corrected in TC. If I recall, Jerry Rice also had some drop issues when he first started. Once he made corrections, he turned out pretty darn good.

    1. I watched Lance' game film and he's no joke. Size, speed, and good catch ability. He will likely be available on early day 3.

    2. I wonder what the Lance family's feelings about the 49ers are?

On the one hand, obviously won't like that they gave up on Trey. On the other, can't really blame them after the way Purdy played in 2022.

    3. I have a sense that Bryce's family would be happy with any team drafts him.

    2. Oh serious? I hadn't realised. Hope he's doing alright. His salary cap tracking is excellent.

    3. As long as he stays on his medication, he's ok but sometimes he goes to a dark place. He seemed fine today as we had a rather lengthy conversation. The last time he was considering it I told him not to quit on the team like Aiyuk.

  18. If he lasts that long I like Ark QB Taylen Green. He could fill the QB 4 spot on the PS. KS could develop him into a very interesting swiss army knife
