Outmanned But Not Outgunned

San Francisco stuns Philadelphia in a thrilling upset 23-19. Brock Purdy lost George Kittle early to an Achilles tear and threw 2 interceptions, but he made the critical plays to win the game in the end. It wasn't the team's best game by any means, nor was it a great coaching job however, Saleh's defense performed admirably and managed to end the game when they had to.

If you told me Purdy would throw 2 interceptions' while at the same time losing Kittle, I would have said no chance in hell we win this game. I don't know how they did it and I don't care. All I know is we get an opportunity to get revenge on Seattle at their house next week. Can't ask for more than that. Congratulations on the win and let's get back to work to be our best in the next round after we celebrate knocking out the defending super bowl champions tonight. 🍻

  1. Unbelievable. The two games I gave them no chance of winning (the other was the first Ram game) and they prove me wrong both times. I wonder if Bosa and Williams will be healthy for camp. Warner will be without a doubt. Greenlaw tore his achilles 4 weeks later than Kittle and he played with 2 games left in the season (if I remember correctly) So hopefully that means Kittle could be back by game 11 next year. If thats true I don't see them drafting a TE high or signing a major TE FA. I think they can get by with Tonges and Farrell for a little more than half of a season. Finally I don't care what anyone says or what their PFF grades are. The 49ers need to sign or draft at least 1 A level O lineman and even better 2. They can't run against good Ds and it may be the difference this week. I say it over and over all I ask of my team is entertain me every week and this team has done more than that. GO 9ERS!!!

  2. Probably the most impressive thing in today's victory for me is that we had 1 penalty for 15 yards and that was questionable at best.

For this game we had DRob come up big.....For the Seattle game, I hope we incorporate BRob into the game plan.

It's gonna be a physical battle for every yard in a loud hellacious atmosphere. Purdy and KS have to be less greedy and if we keep turnovers down, we have a chance.

  3. I wonder if Shanny will develop an alternative scheme for Seattle.....maybe some 21 w BRob and CMC sharing the backfield- I think they need to run more screens w/out the downfield threat- hopefully, Pearsall plays tho. Fun game. Seattle season ticket holders were given threatening letters about re-selling tix last week.

  4. What a tremendous win against all odds! Huge credit to the coaching staff and players for putting together the ultimate team performance.

A few things really stood out to me:

The tackling was the best it’s been in weeks — aggressive and disciplined.

The starting linebackers should stay as they are moving forward. Winters continues to struggle in coverage, tends to overrun plays, and is only an average tackler at best.

Siegle caught my attention again when he came in, the defense looked faster and more energized. He makes plays and should seriously get more snaps over Brown or Mustapha, who just don’t bring the same speed or coverage ability.

  6. With the wind, I knew Purdy was going to have some problems because he has a relatively weak arm and because his throws spend relatively more time in the air because of both the weaker arm and throwing with anticipation. Still, I was impressed by how he shook off those two interceptions to move the team down the field and ultimately for the win.

Kendricks had a great game and Wallow actually had the most tackles of any defender. Maybe we need to give this guy a chance as he played quite well today.

When West AND Alfred Collins were on the field together, Philly had 13 carries for 38 yards (2.9 ypc).

  22. With Kittle confirmed to have torn Achilles tendon and will be on IR for
first several week of 2026 season, the 9ers should try to sign free agent TE Kyle Pitts, who will turn 26 y/o in 2026. His Spotrac market value is ~$12 Mil AAV, but expect intense bidding from multiple teams if he hits the open market. IMO, it would likely cost the 9ers $14 - $15 Mil AAV to sign him.
    HIS HISTORY:
    * Drafted 4th overall in 2021, seen as a game-changing tight end. Had Pro Bowl rookie year (68 catches, 1026 yards) with Matt Ryan, who learned how to utilize him.
    *Post-Ryan Struggles & Coaching Issues (2022-2024)
Quarterback Carousel: After Ryan, the Falcons cycled through Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, Taylor Heinicke and later Michael Penix Jr. none consistently delivering deep or accurate passes.
    * Coaching Mismanagement: Coach Arthur Smith used Pitts as a decoy, blocker, or underneath receiver. Failed to create mismatches with his elite speed and size, leading to frustration and poor play.
    * Injuries: A significant knee injury cost him games in 2022, impacting his development.
    * Many NFL analysts believe Pitts is a rare talent wasted in a rigid system that didn't scheme him open.
    * Atlanta coaching staff under HC Raheem Morris and OC Zac Robinson has specifically worked with Kyle Pitts to improve his blocking and refine his route running.

RE TE Austin Hooper: I agree with you , but was thinking more of a long term replacement for Kittle who is 31 Y/O and no one knows how he'll respond from a Achilles tendon tear?
      * Adding Kyle Pitts to the 49ers, alongside Kittle, would create a nightmare scenario for defenses, allowing KS to deploy an elite 12 personnel packages with 2 dominant receiving TE's who can line up anywhere, creating mismatches against linebackers and safeties and opening up explosive play potential with Kittle and Pitts flexing out as big slot receivers or even split out wide. The combination with Pitts playing the big slot role would make the 9ers offense incredibly dynamic and difficult to defend, leveraging Pitts's rare athleticism and pairing him with Kittle's all around skills.

      Delete
    4. Will be interesting to see how much money they are willing to commit given they just extended Kittle this past offseason. My guess is Pitts will get pretty big money, and it will be more than the 49ers are willing to pay.

Yea, you're probably be right....Spotrac market value is ~$12 Mil AAV, but bidding from multiple teams, would likely cost the 9ers $14 - $15 Mil AAV to sign him. Fun to dream though!

    2. There's still a place for guys whose best asset as a HC is wrangling the herd. Yes, long tenured guys like Harbaugh and Tomlin have been let go, but both guys will easily find jobs elsewhere (Harbaugh is the hot commodity this offseason and Tomlin will be next offseason when he becomes available to coach in the NFL again). Both franchises have had excellent overall records under them.

Sirianni just won the SB last year and Dan Campbell has had the Lions performing well for a couple of years prior to this one.

The difficulty obviously is that you need to find two good coordinators instead of one, but I think it's premature to say these types of HCs are no longer effective.

      Delete
    3. Motivation only gets you so far. Sure, you can have an outstanding OC backed up by another...if you know of a tree that grows them. I don't believe a revolving door at OC is sustainable unless you have a Shanahan, Reid or McVay.

      Delete
    4. Motivation got the Eagles a SB last year. When the Bucs won in 2020, Arians wasn't calling plays. Belichick didn't call plays as a HC and he won a few I hear. There's more than one way to be a successful HC.

      Delete
    5. It's just not sustainable in today's NFL. If I was an owner looking for a HC, I'd seek out the best offensive mind I could find.

      Delete
    6. You say that, yet the record of these coaches states otherwise.

      Delete
    7. Records are great but sustainability is the road I want to stay on.

You know, I was told as recently as last year that Tomlin was a better HC than Shanahan. Of course, I scoffed!

      Delete
    8. Tomlin and Harbaugh proved their way was sustainable. They were the two longest tenured coaches for a very good reason.

They also both had SB success, something Shanahan is yet to taste.

This isn't me saying I think they are better than Shanahan, or I would prefer them to Shanahan. Neither could be further from the truth. But your statement against these types of HCs is objectively and demonstrably incorrect. And for all the "sustainability" Shanahan brings which these guys (according to you) do not, they have had more success as HCs.

    9. Both unemployed. Dinosaurs, just like Belichick. That style of coaching is over.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That was a spectacular upset engineered by Kyle, Saleh, and the entire organization, and yet another inspiring moment throughout this memorable season.

That said, one fatal mistake made by Kyle and his staff has unfortunately doomed the 49ers chances of moving on to the NFC championship game. And it seems that, as brilliant as Kyle has been during his tenure, it's always at least one major failure of him and his staff each and every season that continues to impede their chances of the 49ers winning their 6th Lombardi trophy. This season it's their inability to get their 2024 4th round pick, and their 2025 4th round pick, on the field in order to mitigate their one fatal offensive flaw .... a SEVERE LACK OF OFFENSIVE TEAM SPEED at the WR position. Kyle and John have been well aware of this for a few years now, and yet this major problem persists, and this inability to put pressure on opposing DB's with any kind of field-stretching speed and thus preventing opposing Safeties from aggressively squeezing Niner's WR's by playing shallow coverage and jumping routes, continues to haunt this offense. Yet, for the second straight year, without a healthy Ricky Pearsall on the field, and with the 49ers inexplicable ability to develop either 4th round pick, it has become a major failure, and it will be the reason they will be unable to score enough points VS Seattle's defense for the second time in three weeks. And it's a real shame!

    ReplyDelete
  36. While it doesn't feel that way right now, long term I think the injuries to Bosa and Warner have done the 49ers defense a big favour and set them up for long term success.

First and most obvious is that it's given a bunch of young guys opportunities to play. But that's also the smallest benefit it's provided (and a lot of these young guys would have gotten playing time anyway).

Most importantly, it's made the younger players accountable. There's no Bosa or Warner on the field to pick them up or hide behind. Everyone has had to step up and new voices have had to rise. That's huge for a defense that is undergoing a transformation.

It's taught them the value of next man up mentality, and that even leaders and great players can be replaced. That a team isn't about individuals, even if individuals can make a difference. And that even a group that isn't great individually can still play well together if everyone does their job and works hard for each other.

And what gives me confidence that this won't be a temporary thing is how the young players all seem to still be improving each week. Young guys, especially rookies, usually tail off at the back end of the year. Not happening with this group. They're turning into professionals before our eyes. It's great to see.

    3. Not ancient, but not up and coming either.

I suspect 49er fans value Saleh more than the NFL does atm. Not to say he isn't valued, but I doubt he's considered the best candidate out there. The Jets tenure went really poorly. Lots of good coaches around the league, and as much as people appreciate the job he's done this year with so little, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets overlooked this cycle by the teams he'd be interested in joining, and would say no to places that don't have the right supporting infrastructure in place.

      Delete
    4. I am not sure if McDaniel would want to be Saleh's OC. McDaniel was more successful as a Head Coach. His offenses were generally good with Tua, and he did make a couple of playoff appearances. He's still young (43 yrs) and
may want to work with a more established HC to see if he
can leverage himself for another opportunity. Maybe Phili?

      Delete
    5. Ribeye,
If McDaniel is truly confident in his ability as an OC then Pittsburgh under Saleh would be a perfect fit. As long as They could get Mac Jones the opportunity to be an OC with a great defense, how could he fail? Field position and time of possession alone would make his job very easy.

    Tom Brady 11 straight
    Drew Brees 9
    Patrick Mahomes 6
    Warren Moon 6
    Matt Ryan 5
    Eli Manning 5

  48. If Saleh get hired as a HC anywhere other than Balt, GB and NY I can see him trading for Jones. Possibly Tenn.

    1. Im curious if he will get hired.
I think only a few options are good for him imo. Those would be LV, Tenn, ATL and maybe Miami. The others will likely go in a different direction.

    2. I certainly hope that he wouldn't take the raiders job if it is offered. Las Vegas has become the death valley for head coaches over the years.
Miami and ATL might be good landing spots, but I'm not sure that he leaves the 49ers. He may want to have another year to see the young players he was instrumental in drafting develop into stars. But, if the 49ers shock the world by winning the SB, Saleh will likely jump to the top of head coach needy teams. He may receive an offer that is hard to pass up.

  49. Fa'alili Fa'amoe, OT, Wake Forest, former DT playing RT since '22. Hands have that "pop" and physical with an f in the run game.
