Jonnydels has it right - what the 49ers are missing is some "force multipliers" - guys that make everyone around them better. Getting Bosa and Warner back next season will help, but it's time to start adding the next generation of elite talent.
ReplyDeleteI think the only FA I'd be willing to spend big on this year is Tyler Linderbaum. Genuine PB/ AP talent that's still young. But also doubtful the Ravens let him get to FA.

DeleteDisagree. $20M Linderbaum will be the center for the next 5 years and is an upgrade at a vital spot in Shanahan's offense. Brendel is in the last year of his deal, and is already 33.
DeleteThis is also a case of what I was referring to with Jonnydel's comment. Brendel is fine as the starter, but he's surrounded by other just fine guys on the interior of the OL. The team needs to add some elite talent at pivotal areas that will elevate the guys around them. Linderbaum is one of the few guys available in FA that I think can do that, who is also young enough to be here awhile at the top of his game.

DeleteRemember when KS was first hired how everyone said that center was a major piece to his offense. Started out well with Richburg (although he got hurt) and then Mack. After that, the talent level went way down. I always thought that was strange because it was about that time that KS started to use the outside zone runs much less. So if you are now running more inside, don't you want a dominant center??
DeleteKeep in mind they had Brendel and Mack on the roster in 2021, and I think the move from Mack to Brendel in 2022 was in large part they struggled to find anyone better. Since then Brendel has been solid.
DeleteI don't think it's a deprioritisation of the position- I think its more as Shanahan himself has said, it's not always easy to find someone better that fits what they do.
If Linderbaum does hit FA, he would definitely fit the bill of being someone that is better.
I would be one happy camper if the 49ers would sign Linderbaum. Trade Jones for a 2nd round pick. Use their first or one of their second round picks on a road grader LG. Then sign Marcus Mariota as their back up QB.
DeleteI dont know what the answer is but I am positive they need to sure up the interior of the Oline or they are a doomed vs the Seahawks going forward. If Kyle can't run against light boxes his playbook just isnt very good.
DeletePlayaction doesnt mean anything and Kyle's playbook relies on marrying the run to the pass (not necessarily PA). He doesn't have playmakers on the outside and his straight dropback game isn't nearly as respected across the league.
Throwing against 7 in coverage is already hard, throwing against 7 in coverage when they can get quick pressure and you cant run them out of it has proven to be the anathema to this offense. (as it is to almost all)
The struggle to get much going running the ball this year definitely bit them in the losses. Part of that was blocking, part of that was teams not needing to be honest defending the deep pass. Both areas need fixing.
DeleteI tend to think the greater issue running the ball is on the Oline and CMC. I think CMC clearly doesnt have the suddenness in his movement anymore and the oline getting blown up on so many run plays is a killer.
DeleteThe lack of a deep threat hurts but if teams are playing you in nickel and you still struggle to get yards thats a major issue. In those looks you should be able to double someone and get enough push in the run game to average over 4 yards a carry even if teams are not afraid of you going over the top.
To that point I actually like Linderbaum a lot as he gives you help on either guard.
I just can't get behind the idea that the OL is the reason for our problems. They need consistency at LG along with Kittle and they should be just fine running the football. Throw in a true X for Brock and add an element of speed either from the backfield or WR.

There's not missing blocks and there's dominating blocks. Brendel hits his landmarks which is a big reason Shanahan likes him. Linderbaum moves people and creates holes.
