Game Day Week 2: 49ers vs. Saints

The Saints enter Week 2 as the worst run-blocking OL in football (37.4 grade). Brandon Staley's Blitz rate: 35.1% (10th highest) EPA while blitzing: -0.11 (11th best) 49ers EPA non-blitz: 0.51 (best in Week 1). Rattler has never won a game and is averaging 1+ turnover per game. Their game plan will be a lot of interior pressure to collapse the pocket around Jones and get him off his spot. It's imperative the 49ers Bartch/Brendel/Puni play their best game to keep Jones comfortable. Run at them, play-action once the run is established, effective screens, quick throws against the LBs. MVS and Watkins deep to keep the safeties from creeping up. Own the clock and wear the fat boys down.

49ers’ defense under Shanahan has been at their best when they have a hybrid edge guy who can kick inside and play 4i/3T in the Wide 9 and YGM impressed in that role against Seattle. He had the highest win percentage among all interior rushers in Week 1, being 2.2% better than second place. I like Saleh to keep the Saints offense in hell. 49ers win this one 21-17.

Jauan Jennings is expected to play against the Saints, per Schefter. Trent Williams is active!

49ers inactives:
QB Brock Purdy RB Jordan James WR Jordan Watkins DT Jordan Jefferson T Austen Pleasants LB Nick Martin G Drew Moss

    1. Prater probably comes available in a couple of weeks from BUF- why not Joseph? - I don't believe he was even at the tryout last week.......?

    2. Considering the chances that Moody got...they will at least stick a couple of games with Pinero.

  2. Excellent 2-min drive before the half. That is how you impose your will!

    1. That was impressive... loved the TE screen call.

  3. They are finally getting something going in the run game. That should help the play action a lot.

  4. Something very odd about Pinero's record. He is extremely accurate on FGs but his record on extra points is terrible (relatively speaking)

  5. Piñeiro seems to be earning his stripes now.

  6. Don’t we have anyone better than IG to return kicks?

  7. We're blessed to have Fred. The dude never misses a game and always comes up clutch.

Close this freakin' game and get on the plane guys!

  9. Nice play by Jones to hit Jennings in space there!

  10. That's why they drafted Williams. Great bull rush there to get Bosa the sack.

  11. You beauty! Two road wins to start the year. Gotta love it.

  12. We would have been 0-2 with Sorensen and co this year but we are 0-2 because of Defense closing it out with good coaching/closing out play.

That is why I'm optimistic that we can still win 11-12 games this year and ultimately win the NFC West.

  13. *meant 2-0 this year.

  14. Jones looked pretty damn good. I think we found our left guard Colby looked really good. The D took a step back but came up big in big situations

    1. Yeah, Jones is solid. How long till our friend Mr.Cohn criticizes the 49ers giving Brock Purdy the money and should of just went with Jones?

    2. He did look good. Won't overreact to one game, but what we saw today is what I thought he could be with Shanahan ahead of the 2021 draft. Similar to Jimmy G but with better ability to hit deeper throws.

    3. The only criticism of Jones I have is he holds on to the ball too long sometimes. Like he did on the play he fumbled

  15. Nice win. Some mistakes made from the rookies and Winters, but they're going to get better. Now, I'm waiting for news on Jusczek.

  16. I see you now, MAC JONES!

  17. IMO, it's safe to say Mac Jones has eliminated any doubt that he can do the job!
    Two observations:
    1) He has a strong arm. IMO, he has better velocity then BP, when he throws the ball down field to his receivers.
    2) He needs to work on getting the ball out faster. Lombardi and KS need to remind him he does NOT have all day to deliver the ball and
he needs to avoid turnovers, especially early. Aside from that, he was solid.

  18. Tackles:

    Fred Warner 11
    Nick Bosa 9
    Dee Winters 8

  19. Bryce Huff pressured the QB 5 times today. They've gotten at least 5 pressures from a non-Bosa edge rusher only 12 times in the previous 3 seasons.

  20. As bad as I wanted the 9ers to extend Dre Greenlaw, Dee Winters is making me a believer, as Greenlaw continues to miss games due to a lingering quad injury.

    1. Yeah, Winters has been very good. I was fine letting Greenlaw go due to the injuries, but getting this level of play from Winters is a very pleasant surprise.

  21. My criticism is the two cute plays by Shanahan that resulted in loss of yardage both times on critical drives.

  22. QUESTION FOR THE BLOG: Do you agree, or disagree?

After OG Bartch left with an ankle injury and Colby replaced him,
should the 9ers make Colby the starting OG?
    * Barch has veteran experience and fits the 9ers ZBS, but he has a long history of injuries and inconsistent play, making him unreliable.
    * Colby is a rookie, but a versatile, physical run-blocker. He also has a reputation for high football IQ with strong pre-snap diagnostic skills and the ability to find targets at the 2nd level. He fits the 9ers ZBS and has challenged Barch for the starting OG job. Colby offers higher long-term potential than Bartch, but needs to work on his pass-blocking technique and footwork. Things that can be fixed with coaching and reps

    1. I said before camp if Bartch misses time Colby would take his job. I think deep down the 49ers prefer Bartch coming off the bench.

  23. Last week, Christian McCaffrey had 22 carries for 69 yards and a 36.4 success rate.

This week, McCaffrey had 13 carries for 55 yards, but a success rate of 69.2%. That's the highest success rate in a game for McCaffrey in his career.
