West Side Story

C. J. West has a hyperextended knee, per Kyle Shanahan and said he believes he’s going to be alright and that it’s similar to what happened to Mykel Williams last week. The 49ers are down to 6 defensive lineman, 4 of which have only been here a week or so.

Andre Dilliard has been IR'd and the swing LT job goes to Spencer Burford. Congratulations Spencer, I knew you could do it!

  1. Juice beats 20 for a long TD pass from Purdy … Williams not scrimmaging but he and Crosby still barking at each other.

  2. Russell Gage abusing Raiders DBs in one on one drills.

  3. Getting sick of seeing guys get injured. Even if it's just relatively minor/ short term stuff atm, this is what last year was like with guys just constantly going down during camp. Hopefully they can clear it up come the season.

  4. Depending on the severity he likely is out for 4 weeks... so back by the regular season. Now admittedly as a rookie he needs reps and it definitely would help him get in game shape... so expect limited reps early on. Hopefully he will be full go by week 3.

  5. If you can't get through camp it's likely you won't get through the season.

  6. As bad as it has been at least there has been no major injuries. Everyone who has been injured during TC should be back by the start of the regular season. Even before this rash of injuries I was saying that they would start slow. With all of the missed prep time it could be even worse than I originally thought. I still think a good measure of this years team will be their record over their last 5 to 7 games. A five and two record over their last seven with an overall record of 6 or 7 wins will be a success in my eyes. I believe that the only way this team can make the playoffs this year is to stay completely healthy on offense and to have a bunch of 42-40 wins early in the year.

  7. Coach,
I agree that most TC injuries have not been of the serious nature. But, with the FO reliance on many of the young players and some rookies, it may take 7-10 games before there is some significant upward progress. Until then, the 49ers still can rely on veterans like Bosa, Warner, Demo, T. Williams, Purdy, Kittle, CMC, Juice, and hopefully Jennings.
I'm still going with 10-11 wins with the team hitting their stride after 8 games, imho. This team is being constructed with a 2026 SB run mindset.

Don't disagree with you that "most TC injuries have not been of the serious nature" and "the 9ers still can rely on veterans like Bosa, Warner, Demo, T. Williams, Purdy, Kittle, CMC, Juice, and hopefully Jennings." But they're still going to need WR Rickey Pearsall to step up, as well as some contributions from WR's Jacob Cowing and Russell Gage until Aiyuk is 100% healthy.

  8. David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard is predicting that the team will trade DT Jordan Elliott before the season begins, especially if Sebastian Valdez makes the final roster.
My personal take: I don't see it happening. I think Collins still needs some time before he becomes a starter, and the position depth is thin. My belief is Elliott and Valdez will both make the final 53.

  9. With the injuries, it is a nuanced situation always. Chargers, Ravens etc have both cancelled joint practices with their respective teams. Dolphins are more injured losing Key players for the season (unlike us). So injuries are par for the course.

The Key is to not stack injuries at the same position. As long as we don't do that, we can have a successful season.

I was concerned with Defense, especially DBs before the start of the season, but with the emergence of DBs like Sigle, Pinnock and depth like Jyir Brown, Grant, Mahoney we should be fine. With CBs, we might expect the sophomore slump with Green (as he has not suited up yet for TC). But Flowers is a good signing and emergence of Stout/Lucas/Brown/Robinson will give us adequate depth.

With WRs, we don't really do bunch formations with 3 WR sets. So as long as JJ signs and Pearsall/Robinson suit up, we should be good. The dark horse here is Cowing and Gage. I think both make initial 53 with Watkins emerging as solid depth by end of season.

LB is almost the strength of this team now with so many young players like Winters, Bethune, Blanton and depth like Martin/Curtis Robinson. Plus Fred hardly ever gets injured.

The problem is now Tackle, DL and RB. If Trent, Bosa and CMC go down, we are screwed.

  10. While I don't know how much the starters will play against the LV Raiders, I'd like to see the following players start as well as play a couple of quarters.
    * Colby Connors at LT: Bartch is expected to miss a week with an elbow injury. Hopefully Colby will take advantage and step up.
    * Marques Sigle at S: He's playing both 9ers safety positions and is seeing time with the 1st team defense. He has the physical tools. Sigle ran the 40 in 4.37s in the pre-draft process, including a combine best 15.13 mph in the first 5 yards of his sprint. He also appears to have what it takes to understand the 9er D and communicate with
    the other 9er DB's.
    * Alfred Collins at DT: Got off to a slow start during the offseason program learning to use leverage and perfecting the techniques the 9ers require from their defensive linemen. But he does appear to be making slow progress. This should be an opportunity for him to gain valuable experience.
    * Corey Kiner RB: Kiner has done everything well since joining the 49ers. He should be rewarded with lots of game action against the Raiders.
He still has to earn the confidence of the coaching staff in recognizing and executing his assignments in blitz pickup, but he's definitely making progress in those areas.

  11. I'd also like to add Sebastian Valdez DL: IMO, he's been the most fun rookie to watch and the biggest surprise in the 9er pre season.
The UDFA from the U of Washington made a handful of splash plays in the preseason vs Denver and has flashed at times in practice. The 9ers need a player like Valdez to become a productive rotational player in their D line rotation. Valdez should get opportunities to grab a roster spot.

  12. THIS SHOULD ADD A SOME MOTIVATION AND PUT A CHIP ON THEIR SHOULDERS:
    * These 9ers stars drop a number of spots in 2025 NFL Top 100
    * Kittle fell 17 spots from No. 14 to No. 31 on the NFL Top 100
    * TW came in at No. 45, falling 38 spots after being considered a
top 10 player ahead of the 2024 season.
    * Bosa fell 30 spots to No. 57, despite making his fourth straight Pro
Bowl and averaging a get-off time of 0.70 seconds last season.
    * McCaffrey had the biggest fall of the bunch, going from No. 3 to
    No.73

  13. The 9er officially announced the signing of William Bradley-King and Demone Harris, a pair of defensive linemen the team worked out on Wednesday. The 49ers’ continued pursuit of defensive linemen suggests that Yetur Gross-Matos may not be as close to returning from injury as initially thought.

  14. I tried to tell Lombardi Dwelley ain't making the 53 initial roster but he wasn't having it!😂

  15. Maybe I missed it, but has the 53R been officially established already? I saw DL' potential roster yesterday and while some are pre-established starters others have yet to be set that I know of.

  16. Speaking of injuries, there seems to be just as many injuries in practice as there were back in the day when two a day were the norm.
