INITIAL 53

  1. Razor,
    Thanks for the 53M chart.
    UC,
Youth and speed were essential for the 49ers and they addressed that in April. Let's go!

  2. I think the roster will look a little different by Thurs. I would love to see the 49ers pick up Cole Strange off of waivers. He would free up one spot. He could replace both a back up C and OG

  3. I understand that cutting Morstead was just roster move and they will resign him later this week. I think he is terrible, I hope they are looking around for another punter

    1. That was genius. I suspect the new CBA will change that rule and name if after Shanahan.

  4. Lombardi reporting that Jarett Kingston is released.

  5. Cutting Sebastion Valdez is interesting considering he has reportedly played better than anyone else in camp to date. I understand favoring draft picks but meritocracy has to matter at some point.
That said few have access to the practice field on a daily basis.

    1. Meritocracy bit Zakelj finally.

    2. I'm with you on this Shoup.
Gut-wrenching if we lose Valdez. I have seen him make more plays in preseason than for eg: Robert Beal Jr.

Plus Beal has 2 years on his rookie contract while Valdez will have 3 years and one more year as an RFA. So I don't understand. Maybe coaches have more info, but I just hope we get him to PS and then at some point get him to the 53.

Zakelj had two things going for him...I believe Adam Peters said that he was as close to a Gold helmet designation as could be and was Purdy's roommate. So I guess the coaches were hoping for the Chemistry to develop organically. But it was not to be.

    3. Shoup,
Regarding Valdez. Lombardi reported that Valdez was practicing with the 1st team on Monday which could have been interpreted in many ways. I took it as a vote of confidence. But in any event hopefully the kid passes waivers and the 49ers bring him on the PS. It was obvious that he outplayed others as you mentioned.

  6. Marques Valdes-Scantling is deciding whether to sign with the 49ers or the Steelers.
    I'm a hard no on the 49ers signing Valdes-Scantling. He's far too inconsistent as a pass-catcher.

  7. Even though the Niners are in a state of flux I really like the commitment to youth especially in the trenches. It is of my belief that the correct way to build a team (or anything for that matter) is to build a strong foundation. I am excited about this team, and I am of the opinion if the Niners can stop the run everything else will fall into place - playoff bound yes.

  8. Apparently MVS is a done deal. Multiple sources reporting.

Also Kendrick Bourne released from Patriots....reunion probable.

    1. Valdes-Scantling is probably one of the worse options they could have went with at WR.

    2. True...but he will split valuable snaps as a deep threat option and contribute to special teams. Until DRob, Aiyuk and Watkins return, he will be WR3.

    3. When DRob returns, MVS will be released.

  9. Robinson and Valdez are returning to practice squad. Barrows

    2. I didn't think he would clear waivers.

    3. UC,
I was hopeful that the Hulk would pass waivers.
      He did.

  11. Niners Nation:
The 49ers claimed defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jefferson was a fourth-round pick out of LSU in the 2024 NFL Draft. Jefferson is more of a nose tackle at 6’4”, 317 pounds. Jefferson had four run stops in 32 snaps this preseason. He played 151 snaps for Jacksonville last year. It’s worth noting that all of those came after Week 6. The most snaps Jefferson played in a game were 35.

    Analysis by Lance Zierlein
    Draft Projection
    Round 6

    Overview
Jefferson has a proportional frame with good upper-body thickness. His game against Alabama was discouraging, as he was often overwhelmed at the point of attack by the size and power of the Crimson Tide. However, it is hard to ignore his first-step quickness and ability to shoot into the backfield as a run-play disruptor. Teams will need to invest the time to get him stronger and to improve his take-on technique. He might be worth a draft and stash for one-gapping teams willing to put developmental work into him.

    Strengths
Cat-quick first step launches him into the neutral zone first.
Lateral footwork to mirror zone blocks and scuttle cutbacks.
Effective use of push/pull technique to dismiss centers.
Moves with above-average quickness in short-area pursuit.
Has the get-off to become a more productive rusher with work.

    Weaknesses
Technique and footwork are lacking with block take-ons.
Allows blockers to crowd his chest at point of attack.
Needs to do a better job of leveraging his run fits.
Messy contact balance and anchor against double-teams.
Needs to improve his hand usage as run defender and pass rusher.

  12. Looking at some highlights on Sincere McCormick....who we just picked up from the Raiders. Dude had great vision and contact balance. Would be a good system fit.

    1. Thanks Razor.

Add Sincere McCormick RB. We know there will be one more QB...so that leaves 1 spot. Maybe Gage or Hodkins or Flowers?

  14. The 49ers today waived DL Evan Anderson to make room for DL Jordan Jefferson, whom they claimed off waivers from the Jaguars.

  15. In recent years the 49ers have been a team that loses players to other teams at roster cut down time. This year they've been trading for players and now picking up roster cuts from other teams.

That is very telling about what the 49ers roster depth beyond the main guys is like this year.

  16. Hopefully they will sign Evan Anderson to the PS if he clears waivers. I thought he looked good in the last preseason game.

  17. The cutdown and waiver claim results for 2025:
    • Players that were waived: 608
    • Players that were claimed: 29
    • Percentage: 4.77% (Why I was confident in Valdez not getting claimed)

  18. 49ers re-signed P Thomas Morstead to a one-year deal and placed WR Jacob Cowing on the Injured Reserve List as expected.
