  2. Waiver wire tracker: Which position will the 49ers be keeping a close eye on?

An OG and another WR? Maybe an OT?

  3. Three biggest positions of concern post preseason:
    # 1: Jake Moody
    # 2: WR depth
    # 3 O-line depth

  4. JJ's Escalators:
    -50% of snaps: $1.5m
    -60 catches: $667k
    -600 yards: $667k
    -6 TD: $667k

    1. This needs to happen...
Kyle Shanahan expects Jauan Jennings for opener.

    2. Thats what he'll have a difficult time earning if he's IR'd for 4 games.

  5. I hope the Niners continue to stay young. Moss and Valdez need to make this team otherwise they will be plucked off the waiver wire.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Cutting young ascending players like Moss and Valdez would be a minor surprise for me. Al Collins will be a very good player once he reaches his stride. But I don't see that happening right away. Moss has shown well enough to stay on this team.
We'll see how it shakes out tomorrow.

  7. I hope we go with 2 TEs (Kittle+Farell) and 2 QBs in the initial 53 roster. Should not be much demand for Willis or Tongues. Even if there is, Dwelley is unrostered so far. So we should be fine.

Use those extra spots to retain Valdez and Moss (Colby makes initial 53).

Assuming also that Zakelj makes the roster because of his ability to backup center and Hennessey is released and brought back as the Vet.

IR with return on Givens and Cowing or JJ. This way one of them doesn't count on initial 53 and we go with just 4 receivers - Pearsall/Watkins/Moore/JJ or Cowing

Gage/Hodgins/Chosen can be brought back as the Vets.

    1. They went with 2 TE's on last years initial 53.

I'm not buying Valdez and Moss making the initial 53.

I am buying Zakelj makes the initial 53.

Givens and Cowing to IR. JJ will play week 1 because missing 4 games makes it harder for him to get his $3.5M in escalators.

Pearsall, JJ, Watkins, Moore is who I'd go with on the initial 53 but I bet Gage is on it too.

  8. Lombardi feels the same way regarding Zakelj because of his versatility. While Moss has looked good in preseason, Z can move over to center in a pinch.
Hopefully, Valdez can get stashed away on the PS, but I doubt that he passes waivers.

    1. Yeah Valdez getting waived is risky. At times he has looked even better than Collins.

Dude plays with violence and will definitely play for a team this season....have to wait to see if it is the 49ers.

      Delete
    2. Perhaps a good sign for Valdez. Lombardi reports that Valdez was working with the number 1's today. It could be that Shanahan wants to get one last look at him before making a decision tomorrow.

  9. Great news: Mykel Williams, CJ West, Richie Grant, and Ben Bartch have returned to practice.

Bad news: JJ and Stout have not.

  10. Coming off a 1,000-yard season, Jakobi Meyers is due $10.76 million in the last year of his contract. With no extension coming in Las Vegas, he'd prefer to play elsewhere.

  11. The Bengals released Taven Bryan, iDL fishished preseason with a 26.9% pass rush win rate.

  12. 9ERS GET SOME GOOD NEWS:
    * Rookies Mykel Williams and CJ West returned to the practice field after missing time with hyperextended knees they sustained during joint practices this summer.
    * Dominick Puni appears to be much further along in his bid to be physically ready for the 49ers’ Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Puni went through physical therapy and conditioning while his teammates had an hour-long practice. He was seen running and looking much better just 9 days after sustaining a knee injury in the 49ers’ preseason game against the Raiders. He appears to be tracking toward getting back in the lineup for the start of the regular season.
    * Presumptive starting left guard Ben Bartch returned to practice after missing two preseason games with a right elbow injury. He wore a brace on his right arm.

  14. Lions have waived WR Jackson Meeks.

  15. Sometimes the 49ers handle contract negotiations worse than any team outside of the Bengals. Either give Jennings what he wants or trade him. My vote (for what it worth) is sign him but maybe the Raiders might swap Jakobi Meyers for Jennings

    1. Really? Thats pretty harsh given all the money they've paid out. JJ isn't an angel. He replaced Bourne the same way Pearsall was drafted to replace him. He knows how this works. The 49ers were never gonna extend him even with all the injuries in the room. My best advise to the young man is to ball out and then sign with a team for $15M Apy next year.

      Delete
    2. Razor,
I didn't mean that they are cheap. What I meant is in the past they have waited until the season has almost started and negotiations had become disruptive to the locker room and then they signed players for as much or more than the player was originally asking for. What I said was either give in and sign Jennings or trade him. Maybe for another WR because right now they need a starting level WR for week one and it is not Skyy Moore. imho

      Delete
    3. They wont trade him. He'll need to play 6 games minimum if he wants his F/A freedom next year. The Niners would then be in line for a comp pick, likely better than any trade compensation they're likely to get. Gonna cost him over $3.5M if he decides to go that route though.

  16. If you guys wanna player to scout this weekend, I like Miami's DL Rueben Bain Jr. going up against Notre Dames OL. He was hurt last year but if healthy, he can be a menace.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Razor
I agree, Rueben Bain is a player that would be an excellent 9er fit and Saleh would love him. But at 6'3" X 275, where would you play him? DT, EDGE, or both?
    * Depending on the 9ers 2025 W - L record, they would likely have to trade up to mid 1st Rd to draft him.

    1. GEEP,
Like how they focused on D line in this years draft. I hope next draft they choose O linemen with 3 of their first 5 picks.

      Delete
    2. I'd play him in a similar role to Mykel Williams. Not sure where he'll get drafted yet but if he has the kind of year I suspect he might, you're probably right.

OldCoach, they'll draft two OL's. One OT day 2 and one iOL day 3. By my count you got 10 draftable OT's and 15 iOL's.

      Delete
    3. OldCoach
Yes! 👍 I agree with you on drafting O-line.
I'd draft an OT in Rd #1 and Rd #2 then a Center Rd # 3.
      * Razor and I both agree that Utah OT's Caleb Lomu and Spencer Fano are 9er draft prospects. Both fit KS ZBS, but
The 9ers would likely have to trade up to draft either one.
      * Blake Miller, OT Clemson is likely a Rd #2 prospect that also
      fits the 9ers ZBS.
      * Center: Bryce Foster, C Kansas: Listed as a late Rd #4 draft pick. At 6'5" X 330, he has size, power and a 4.95s 40.
He's also an elite shot putter with a PB of 64’ 8.75”
I expect he'll move up in the 2026 draft.
NOTE: I'm tired of watching Brendel get walked back into BP.

  19. The funniest thing about Kyle Shanahan is that it's soooooooo obvious when he giving 49ers reporters and fans, a line of absolute BS. Matt Maiocco basically asked Kyle bout whether they are putting together a plan B for Jake Moody do to the "up and down nature of how Jake has been" and Kyle literally said: "I thought he had one of the best games I'VE EVER SEEN A GUY HAVE last week! (a missed FG, and a badly hooked almost missed FG)". Kyle Shanahan just might be the king of gaslighting the 49ERS fanbase!

    1. It's as if Kyle doesn't realize these preseason games are televised. The amount of "stupidity" that Kyle believes the 49ers fanbase is, or has .... is jaw-droppingly, mind-blowingly unbelievable!

Anyone on this blog want to predict the +/- amount of games it's going to take before Moody costs the 49ers a critical game and ends up getting replaced this season? I give it 3 GAMES!

I agree. I expect KS to run the ball 30+ times With both CMC and Robinson.
      * I also expect KS to use both Kittle and Farrell ia 12 personnel grouping and create mismatches that forces Seattle defense to decide between stopping the 9ers from running the ball, or passing....
      * The big question for me is: What will JJ do, will he play?

  21. The #Jets are releasing WR Malachi Corley, per @mzenitz.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Malachi Corley is WR I thought the jets may cut. He's built like a RB, excels at YAC, with exceptional physicality, strong hands for contested catches and a gadget/screen player, similar to Deebo Samuel. Corley's long speed is not elite, but his overall explosiveness and contact balance are impressive.
July 2024 Corley signed a 4 year, $6,073,456 contract with the Jets, that included a $1,237,060 signing bonus, $1,237,060 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $1,518,364
IMO, the 9ers should try to sign him.....

  23. Per source, the 49ers are cutting CB Dallis Flowers, who lined up a lot with the first-string defense when Renardo Green was injuries. The 49ers have waived Terique Owens. He does have a strong chance to land on the practice squad, per Maiocco.

  26. Cutting Valdez would be a small surprise for me. But understandable if he is. The 49ers used their draft and FA signings to help along the Dline. Sebastian will likely be a casualty in the numbers cuts.

  27. Lombardi thinks that Valdez "has forced himself onto the roster." But, he doesn't make the official call.
    TBD - soon.

  28. Surprised about the Dallis Flowers cut. I thought he was going to be backup CB and have return duties. Hope there is a Vet-Handshake deal in place.

So I guess Robinson and Lucas make the cut?

Lenoir, Green, Lucas, Robinson, Neal. So that means 4 safeties? Pinnock, Sigle, Grant, Brown (with Mustapha starting on PUP)

    2. Mid,
Bit of a surprise considering his fine play. But the 49ers went heavy on defense in the draft making it difficult to justify a roster spot for a UDFA. Some team might grab him or he might find himself on the 49ers PS.

      Delete
  30. Sanity prevails and Drew Moss and Connor Colby make 53. Zakelj waved. Hope he gets picked onto PS as well.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The Zakelj project has just never really borne any fruit, despite the team clearly seeing some talent there. That he's been surpassed by two rookies I think is as much about the 49ers losing hope he'll put it together and looking to put that coaching effort into new promising projects, as it is the young guys being better than him right now.

  31. Glad to see Colby and Moss both make the 53. Would love to see Valdez on the practice squad, somehow I think someone is going to pick him up.
