The San Francisco 49ers are 20-6 when the Three Amigos are on the field together. If they stay healthy you can forget about a "rebuil...
The 49ers have signed OL Andre Dillard, OL Nicholas Petit-Frere, and CB Dallis Flowers to one-year contracts.
ReplyDeleteFair to say the 49ers don't love the in-house depth at OT.
DeleteSigning, 3 FA OL players over the last couple weeks is interesting. These guys could just be camp bodies or perhaps an indictment on the failure of the FO not viewing OL as an important value in the draft.
ReplyDeleteIt wont be until late August to see how this shakes out. But, my only concern was not going OL in the 5th rd instead of a potential redshirt QB.
I think it's pretty well established they wanted an OL at pick 100.
DeleteQuestion is - do you believe the team should have forced an OT selection? I.e., taken an OT over a guy they believe is better, just to get an OT?
I can't really get on board with that unless you have no other holes.
Trading two of their 7 picks for Jack Nelson or Jonah Monheim is better (imho) than a QB that will likely spend his rookie yr redshirting. Bergen will need to show something as a ST Returner or become the next Richie James. But again, it's just my honest opinion. It is, what it is and hope that Rourke and Bergen can become valuable contributors.
DeleteYeah... I'm not convinced late day 3 guys are really going to move the needle. You get some surprises for sure, but by and large most late day 3 guys don't do much in the NFL. What's really the difference between Colby, Monheim and Nelson? Will Colby even make the roster, and would Monheim or Nelson? Kingston was a 6th rounder last year and he didn't make it. And how much better are they as prospects than say Moss, the UDFA?
DeleteIf Colby and Moss fail to make even the PS, then it would appear that the FO abandoned the OL all together. Which is concerning because there were obvious needs last season after TW was out. As Razor mentioned a few weeks ago, next year's draft will provide some very good OL players to choose from and that's cool. But in the meantime, things could get interesting if TW misses any time this coming season. Who are the backup players that can be efficient if any projected starter goes down?
DeleteI think the Swing OT job is Spencer Burford's to lose. LG is likely gonna come down to Bartch or Colby.
DeleteI think Burford will be given s shot at OG.
DeleteAES, again, it's not that they didn't want to add an OL. The question comes down to whether you wanted them to force an OL pick or not. If you're of the belief they should have forced such a pick that's fine. But I disagree with that approach given how many holes they had.
I'm not of the belief that they should have forced any pick. I'm of the belief that a little more attention should have been given to the OL. McKivitz has a chance to put his stamp on the OL this season which would be a big help.
DeleteYou can't really have it both ways, AES. It's not a case that they didn't want to draft OL. It's just at their picks an OL wasn't highest on their board. Which means taking one would have been forcing the pick.
DeleteNow sure, they could have traded up. But in the rounds you're suggesting (7th) I don't think you're getting a guy that's really going to improve what you already have all that much. And if you do it earlier, you have to give up probably two players at other positions you also need.
I'm still in an adjustment mode re the draft. I'll be fine as the new season nears, I'm sure? 😏
DeleteAbove comments are mine.
ReplyDeleteAnother top pick gone by the wayside.
ReplyDeleteDillard and Petit-Frere may be two of the worst pass blocking OTs in football. They make McKivitz look like the 2nd coming of Joe Staley.
ReplyDeleteI think McKivitz is gonna have an outstanding year. He's been working his tail off and sources tell me he's put on 12 pounds of muscle and now weighs 330 pounds!
DeleteRazor
DeleteBut has his pass protection improved? If it has, he'll be a FA, next next year and get a big pay day with another NFL team... Good new, Bad news!
Heh, heh I don't expect any of them to make the roster OldCoach.
ReplyDeleteYou don't bring in 3 vets with starting experience because you're happy with your current options.
DeleteCompetition and may the best men win.
DeleteBoy did they dodge a bullet with Shemar Stewart.
ReplyDeleteRazor
DeleteDo you know WHY Stewart is holding out, other than he doesn't like his rookie contract? Seem odd, since since all 1St Rd draft picks receive fully guaranteed contracts?
Oh boy, that's a terrible look. Bengals better hope he can get by on physical gifts his whole career, because he ain't all in.
DeleteGEEP,
DeleteIt could just be bad attitude.
Bengals are the only team in the league who have a 1 day rookie minicamp (I really don't know what the thinking behind that was).
So it could just be that Shemar doesn't want to risk injury for one day of minicamp without having the guaranteed contract signed.
* My only comment on DE Drake Jackson is....What took the 9ers so long?
ReplyDelete* Both OT's Andre Dillard and Nicholas Petit-Frere saw success in college. Both put up good combine numbers and are good fits for
the 9ers ZBS. Dillard was a 1st Rd pick by the Eagles. Petit-Frere was a 3rd Rd draft pick by the Titans.
Both had solid rookie seasons, became starters but regressed due to injuries and poor performance. Petit-Frere was also suspended
(in 2023) for violating the league's gambling policy. Both are also
considered a liability in pass protection.
* The question is, are both Dillard and Petit-Frere camp bodies, or
can Foerster salvage their careers? Their contracts should help to answer that question, but I suspect they're camp bodies? TBD
Can't say I'm surprised.
ReplyDeleteWhen he was drafted they kept racing about his get off and bend... And I kept watching a guy not beat anyone on the outside. His athleticism didn't line up with the tape at all imo.
I really like the mindsets of the guys we drafted.
DeleteHow's pops?
Thanks for asking Razor,
DeleteIt was a great trip home. We watched the draft and strung a lot of fence line (barbwire,) for the cattle while I was home. Pop's is 83 and going strong. I hope I can go as strong as him when I'm his age.
Good to hear, Shoup!
DeleteMason Graham is who I thought he was at Browns camp. Vomited on day 2 and didn't look nothing like a top 5 pick in drills.
ReplyDeleteWriting a guy off after rookie minicamp is a bold strategy 😅
DeleteNot writing him off but I thought he was grossly overrated.
DeleteThe old Raiders WR Fred Beliknikoff used to throw-up before every game. He turned out pretty good. Graham went up against some very good competition in college, his story is far from over.
ReplyDeleteFA WR Gabe Davis is flying to San Francisco today to meet with the 49ers, per source.
ReplyDeleteTrey Sermon signs with the Steelers.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea he was still in the league.
Isaiah Neyor, positive reports coming out of camp to include David Lombardi. College highlights below.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB8y7VRts-s
49ers RB Jordan James: 36.5% of his 2024 runs turned into a first down or TD, 2nd-highest rate in CFB.
ReplyDeleteI think there will be a big time camp battle between James and Kiner. I think Kiner will start his rookie year on the PS unless Guerrero gets hurt.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Not sure Kiner can supplant Taylor's special teams value. CMC/Guerendo/James/Taylor is how I see the RB room.
DeleteSame.
DeleteAnd then the Rams will sign Kiner to their roster. :(
DeleteThe last guy everyone was upset at losing to the Rams gained them a grand total of 9 yards last season.
DeleteWhat about Kingston? He was another one that garnered hand wringing.
DeleteYep. Being in a position where teams add guys to their 53 that you can't fit in yours is a good sign of the strength of your roster. Sucks you can't keep them all, but that's the reality. But it's also very rare a rookie gets cut that then goes to another team and is great.
DeleteThis is our team that we're talking about.... the same one that lost DJ Reed trying to sneak him to the PS.
DeleteEnded up keeping Ambry Thomas over Womack (who is now a starter at Colts) and then cut Ambry too.
So I wouldn't be surprised if we lose another RB.
Sure. We've lost some guys in the past that have gone on to be good. Interestingly, the two guys you mentioned weren't UDFA rookies though.
DeleteI agree we'll likely lose some guys to other teams again this year. As will many other teams. And 99% of those guys won't ever be more than back end of the roster types.
There have been other UDFAs like Tim Patrick who went on to have great years on other teams.
DeleteMy larger point is to get better at Talent Evaluation. Not invest too many resources on RB, when our scouts have proven to find UDFA gems who are usually better than our "drafted" talent.
So to make sure I understand, you are of the opinion they shouldn't have drafted Jordan James, and that Kiner will be better than him?
DeleteMaybe you're right. Though the team has usually done a pretty good job of holding onto the UDFA RBs they want to hold onto.
We traditionally keep 3 RBs + 1 FB (Juice) on the 53.
DeleteWe already have CMC, Guerendo, Abanikanda and Patrick Taylor Jr familiar with the playbook.
So I would not have drafted another rookie RB. Drafted being the keyword. Instead take a chance on one or two UDFAs like Kiner or develop Abanikanda. But don't waste valuable draft picks on RBs, especially knowing that we suck on talent evaluation on middle round RBs.
Better roster strategy would be to take a flyer on a Developmental IOL or CB/Lb or even a DT.
Fair enough. I disagree, given how deeply talented the RB class was and how CMC comes with serious injury question marks, but each to their own.
DeleteAlso Guerendo, or unless they plan to use him more as a WR.

Given time I do believe the Niners will have a suffocating defense. Going to be some growth pain, no problem.
ReplyDeleteFor mine the biggest question mark is still the pass rush. With the additions they made I can see the similarities to what Saleh was doing with the Jets, with big strong DTs and smaller, faster LBs making it difficult to both run or pass over the middle.
DeleteBut at edge, the Jets had a platoon of quality edge rushers when that defense was at its best. When the edge talent wasn't as good they struggled getting off the field on 3rd down, much like Saleh's time with the 49ers.
When a team can't stop the run no need for a pass rush as the opposing team is going to run all day till you stop it. Once you can control the run then yup the pass rush looms bigtime. Stop the run, then you know the other team is having to pass, thus defense becomes easier knowing what the other team has to do for yardage. That's my thinking anyhow - I think.
Delete3rd and 6 is where we gotta live.
DeleteYep, agree with all of that. The additions they made are all designed to control the middle of the field and get teams into 3rd and long. I'm just pointing out that Saleh's defenses have typically struggled to get off the field on those 3rd and longs when he's not had a strong platoon of pass rushers. I have a feeling we'll see a few struggles this year getting off the field at critical times.
DeleteThe only sack the future 6th overall pick Paris Johnson Jr. allowed all season was to 18-year-old Mykel Williams in the semifinals:
ReplyDeleteWilliams wins from a wide-9 and gets into the chest of a dominant OT w/ a 91st percentile wingspan and has him on skates the second he makes contact.

According to the 49ers media website, Alfred Collins has taken #95, and C.J. West is now #99.
ReplyDeleteApparently Pearsall is changing to #1.
Delete5 10:00 AM starts. West coast teams lose around 65% of their early starts. A few years ago the 49ers along with all of the west coast teams wen't to the rules committee to try and change the rules to no west coast team could have 5 or more 10:00 AM starts. Obviously they lost.
