Gameday Week 2: 49ers vs Vikings

Despite Flores' intent to take away the run with 6 man fronts and blitzes, I'm expecting another run heavy game plan with Mason going over 100 yards and 2 TD's. Purdy will throw 2 TD's and Aiyuk and Kittle might be the recipients. Deebo usually does extremely well against zone defense which the Vikings are in most. Darnold should be good for an Int to Lenoir. Watch the screens to offset the pass rush. I like the Niners to exorcise the demons in Minnesota with a win of 31-16.

#49ers inactives: QB Josh Dobbs (third QB) S Talanoa Hufanga (knee) CB Darrell Luter G Ben Bartch LB Dee Winters Team allowed fewer inactive today because it doesn't have a full 53 players on the active roster at the moment. (Christian McCaffrey)

  1. I am hoping the O-line continues to improve which would diminish the loss of CMC. Speaking of CMC sounds like it's going to be at least six weeks for his return.

    1. Feels like it could be as long as 8 weeks if they keep winning. At that point it makes you wonder how effective he could be after that much down time.

  3. Ouch! There's a reason why JJ is the best. Good wake-up call for the 49ers. Let's go!

  4. Like I said earlier this week, short week, cross country trip and an early start equals disaster.

  5. You were right, Coach. The Vikings have always been a tough win for the 49ers. They got an important Kittle TD before halftime.

  6. This is unwatchable from us.

Credit to KevinOConnell and Brian Flores. They had their team prepared

  7. With all of the talk last week about how good this O line is they were equally bad today. KS couldn't scheme his receivers open today. Purdy certainly didn't look like a 60 million dollar QB today. The DBs seemed confused all day. Floyd disappeared today. All together a piss poor performance today. Hopefully it was just early season performance in todays NFL.

    1. Agree coach. Premature to anoint the OL.

The only reason this was not a blowout was because of Fred Freakin Warner...what a beast.

Hope the coaches will learn from this. Flores has driven circles around KS three times now.

  8. I'll call it an early season hiccup. The Viks had a good game plan on both sides of the ball and for reasons unknown, they seem to have the 49ers number. Good game for Sam Donald. He made the big throws today.

  9. I don't want to become known as Mr. Negativity so how bout a couple good 9ers performances Deebo and Kittle were both outstanding today as well as Warner and Bosa. Coaches (other than Andy Reid) play there starters so little in todays NFL preseason that the first 3 games aren't much more than preseason games. Just look at todays games so far.

  10. Mason ran good in the 1st half and had some nice runs in the 4th QTR. A couple of things that Purdy could focus on is better pocket awareness. A couple of sacks came because ignored his blind side. Also, try not throwing into tight coverage. Shanahan reverted back to his old habit of getting cute near the goal line. Better to get these things corrected early on in the season.

    1. This is KS' 8th season as HC and he still makes rookie mistakes in his game management. I don't think he will improve. He'll have an explanation for why he didn't go for the field goal in the first half when the game was still close. That was the smart move as the Vikings were showing that their defense is not only good but well prepared to play the 9ers. Had we kicked the FG, then they would have had a much higher chance of winning the game at the end instead of relying on a miraculous onside kick from a kicker who didn't seem to have a clue on how to execute one.

  11. Wow! Fred Warner. What a joy.
I'm worried that Shanahan will be reluctant to play Cowing and Pearsall even in a situation like yesterday or in the loss to KC in the Super Bowl where lack of separation was killing us. Even just to take the top off of the defense.
Hufinga is another plodding safety. Before he was hurt, he was playing poorly including his tackling.
    Trent Williams was meh.
Like Old Coach said, the DB's looked confused ... and Bosa in coverage??
Meanwhile we could have won the game without the turnovers, so OK, maybe we had not to be repeated stupid plans on offense and defense.

  12. Despite as poorly as some played, we played well enough to win. For example, if we run the ball at the 1.5 yard rather than pass, we win. That was on Kyle unfortunately.

  13. What I have seen repeatedly with this team is the following:

"Things are NOT AS BAD OR AS GOOD AS THEY SEEM". So if we seem fantastic it is time to temper expectations, and at the same time if we look woeful for 1or 2 weeks, don't lose hope.

So I'm not too worried about this loss. Masterclass by KevinO and Flores and Shanahan said as much, after the whopping.

It looked bad but all correctable and we have the sorry Rams coming up. They have like 20 players on IR and most of the others hurt. So nothing like Rams week to get right.

    ReplyDelete
  14. For the most part the team sucked that includes coaches. I was hoping the O-line would play at least as well as they did last week, they didn't. When the punt was blocked, I knew we were in for a long day. Next game up.

    2. Too bad but interesting about who they’ll use to back up Mason

      Delete
    3. Maybe they’ll bring back Breida. Guerendo’s an injury risk and they seem to view Taylor as just a special teamer.

  16. Fast: Chris Conley, Jacob Cowing, Ricky Pearsall, Terrace Marshall,
    Isaac Guerendo
    Slow: Trent Taylor, Ronnie Bell
I've enjoyed some of our losing seasons in the past. I could enjoy this one if we play the speed. But more Trent Talyor and Ronnie Bell would be hard to take. I hope Shanahan doesn't promote Taylor instead of speed because he can catch punts, too.
One commentator said that Mason was often open as a checkdown and neglected. Has anyone watched the All-22?

  17. The 49ers lost 3 games last season with Deebo out. After watching Aiyuk's play in the first 2 games, I'm honestly not confident that he is ready to help compensate for Deebo's loss. We'll find out in the next 2-3 weeks.

    1. He has to miss at least the first 4 games due to being on the NFI list. But based on what I have read/ heard, sounds like he's already able to do light training so suspect he'll be good to go week 5.

  21. Jordan Mason through two games, according to SIS Data Hub:

17 missed tackles caused, tied for first with Rhamondre Stevenson.

159 yards after contact (first in the NFL).

    24 off-tackle runs (5.5 per rush)

14 inside runs (5.0 per rush)

  22. Latest 49ers trade rumour, One of the 9ers backup QBs Dobbs or Allen for Dolphins RBs either Mostert or Jeff Wilson. While Mostert is a star he is currently hurt and the 49ers did not sign him when he hit free agency because he was injured so often with the 9ers. I think Wilson would be a great pick up. He would continue to be a very valuable #3 RB after CMC hopefully returns

    ReplyDelete

    1. I could understand making that trade if Mason gets hurt, but feels premature otherwise. Unless they just don't believe Guerendo is ready at all.

      Delete
    2. It’s interesting. No word about working out an RB. Mostert is injured. Wilson Jr has a history of knee problems. Guerendo quad issues. If they don’t think Taylor can do it, they seem to be in a bit of a pickle. Jennings? Willis?

  23. Looks like it might just be one of those years. Now its Bosa, he might miss games with a rib injury. They need to win at least 4 of their first 8 games if they want to make the playoffs. This is Purdy's chance to show he is a franchise QB. Can he put this team on his back?

  26. Scooter,
You just reminded me of last years SB loss which still gnaw at me. I agree that last years team was imo, our best opportunity to bring home a trophy. There's nothing that can be done to limit the current rash of injuries. But, if there's a ray of hope it is that the 49ers will be at full strength for the home stretch.
Hufanga, Deebo, CMC, Kittle, and maybe Greenlaw as well. This team is still in the SB sweepstakes.

    * With the 9er star players out, BP has a chance to go head to head with Stafford and put to rest he's a "system QB" BS. With both the Rams and 9er WR's banged up, the game winner will likely be determined by the QB that produces.
    * While I agree Aiyuk has to step up his game against the Rams, I don't believe he has to carry the offense. It would be great if he does, I believe both Jennings and Juice need to help carry the offense. I'd also like KS to give Cowing, Conley and Bell a chance to show if they can contribute.
    * I look for Mason to have ~30 carries and help get the 9ers a win.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It is time for BP to prove he is a 60 million dollar franchise QB. If he stumbles over the next 3 to 6 games should the 9ers break the bank to sign him next year? In my opinion so far he has shown he is a good to very good QB but not yet a franchise level QB. I believe he is worth 35 to 40 mill. The problem lies with the fact that even if BP struggles a bit this season there will be at least one team out there willing to give him top 5 money. So the 9ers will be between a rock and a hard place, over pay for a good QB which could decimate the rest of the roster or let him slip away without a good replacement in place. Lose/lose.

Would winning a SB make BP a $60 million dollar franchise QB?
If so, what would be your antithesis to the doubters argument that even if he wins a SB, it is because of the super stars on
the 9er roster and they're carrying him. That without the 9er super stars BP would just be a good, not great (franchise) QB?

      Delete
    2. Geep,
If the 9ers win a SB with BP as their QB and he plays well, that would be enough for me to be okay with a 60 mill contract. A better test would be BP playing "great" the next 4 to 6 weeks without all of the stars on O at 100%. I think him accomplishing that would be a little more impressive than the 9ers and BP winning a SB with all players on O healthy but lets be real what I really want is both.

    1. AES,
Play man D (that might be more about his receivers than him) Try to bring pressure up the middle while the DEs don't let him get outside. Study the game films of this years and last years Minn games as well as last years Balt and Cleve games. Pray for rain he is horrible in weather.

    3. "Try to bring pressure up the middle while the DEs don't let him get outside."
That would be my strategy as well. Key is keeping him in the pocket and make him throw over defenders in his face. In this scenario the oline needs to shore up the middle.

  30. Trent Williams on the current injuries.

"Nobody would have known Brock [Purdy] if we didn't lose [two] quarterbacks in one year," Williams added. "So, it's a blessing in disguise, and guys just gotta be ready to step up and relish in the moment."

  32. Shanahan labels Guerendo as ‘next man up' in Deebo's absence
    https://sports.yahoo.com/shanahan-labels-guerendo-next-man-044417669.html
*Looks like KS will use Guerendo as the kick returner against Rams.
    * "JP has been doing a hell of a job these last two weeks and his stamina, the way he's been running, he hasn't needed to come out much, especially with Deebo in there," Shanahan told Papa. "But now with Deebo not an option, Guerendo is the next man up. And especially with Deebo not an option at kick returner, he's the next man up."
NFL Combine Results for Issac Guerendo
    40-yard dash: 4.33 seconds.
    10-yard split: 1.55 seconds.
    Vertical jump: 41.5 inches.
    Broad jump: 10.9 inches.

  33. 9er reserve players that'll get a chance to contribute against the Rams:
    * CB Renardo Green: Green is the next man up if Ward is out Sunday.
He appears to be the top option to play in the slot with Yiadom and Deommodore Lenoir on the outside.
    * WR Jauan Jennings: With no Deboo, no CMC and potentially no Kittle, Jennings will be thrust into a role as a primary offensive weapon for the 49ers.
    * TE Eric Saubert: If Kittle is out we'll likely see Saubert as the primary tight end for the 49ers. Saubert caught two balls for 26 yards down the stretch of the 9ers Week 2 defeat in Minnesota.
    * SS Malik Mustapha: KS says Mustapha's rotation in Week 2 may continue. With Talanoa Hufanga on track to return in a starting role,
we won't see Mustapha in a starting role but he'll be a valuable piece of the 9ers' secondary as a rotational piece if Hufanga isn't ready for a full workload. There's also a chance Mustapha plays as a third safety and de facto third linebacker to help the team in third down situations where they've struggled so far this season.
    * TE Jake Tonges: He could provide support as a pass catcher after thriving in that role during the preseason. He posted 9 catches for 63 yards in his 3 exhibition contests.
    * DE Yetur Gross-Matos: With Bosa questionable to play, Gross-Matos can play a sizable role as a edge, with the versatility to kick inside. Matos should make life much easier for the secondary as he offers secondary pass rush either off the edge or from the interior.
