Will Aiyuk Practice?

Lynch was emphatic that he expects all their players to practice when asked if Aiyuk will be participating. The Niners have no intention of trading Aiyuk, Lynch noted that there are "no absolutes" in this process. However, Larry Krueger followed that up with a question about "absolutes" when it came to Bosa, which I thought was the best question of the lot. "I did say that with Bosa, and I felt that way. I think, again, no absolutes there. We fully intend on Brandon being a Niner moving forward". Shanahan also noted the importance of having CMC signed, which could've been taken like a slap in the face to Aiyuk if it weren't so clear that CMC is one of one. Lynch, “I always want to be optimistic. This has been a tough one…we’re going to continue to work towards finding resolution. Not optimistic, not pessimistic.” Sounds to me like the 49ers have their heels dug in on a number that they have no intention of moving from. How do you guys feel?

Greenlaw, Hufanga, Jackson all start out on PUP while the number one draft pick, Ricky Pearsall is dealing with a minor hamstring injury and will begin the year on NFI.

  1. Finally meaningful football!

Good to see Aiyuk at TC... so at some level he realizes that he doesn't have much leverage. All scenarios still in play with Aiyuk.

I guess Jackson will start year on IR and will be stashed.

I'm looking forward to these position battles: D-Line Backups and starters, Nickel CB, 3rd LB, TE3 and who takes first-team center reps.

Reported that Shanahan offered Bill Belicheck a coordinator job, and was politely turned down by Belicheck.

Quite a daring effort by Shanahan, but accepting anything but a head coaching job, imho, would be low-balling for BB.

    1. So much for Shanahan being an "ego maniac" that wouldn't offer BB a job.

  5. I wonder if BB had taken the job if he would have kept running the wide 9? Would Kocurek have been fired. If so it doesn't say much about Kocurek's job security.

  6. Coach,
We'll never know that. But, hypothetically speaking, if BB would have taken Shanahan's offer and won a Superbowl. At least he could have said that he could win a SB without Brady, lol.

  7. Aiyuk holding in. Regular season game checks are even more punitive than missing training camp. I wonder what his plan is?

The fact that Aiyuk showed up for training camp tells you he knows he has NO leverage. That NOT showing up would be like shooting himself in the foot. Or should I say, shooting himself in the bank account and career.
IMO, If he shows up, but then refuses to practice, he looks like a 3 year old at a grocery store throwing a tantrum because mommy refuses to
    buy him candy.
By not practicing, he is also likely increase his chances he'll have a
down year. That is not going to help him get paid the money he
wants from the 9ers, or a team he's traded to.

    1. I don't know anything about the injury history of the other top WRs drafted, but this is not good news. Protecting someone from themselves, especially a kid his age, is kind of impossible. The Cowing pick might turn out to be good insurance. And of course, they drafted an RB in the third with his own hamstring history. I'm sticking to my prediction that Shrader will end up RB2.

Interesting sack stats. In viewing Aldon Smith's numbers he averaged a tick over 10 sacks per season. Had he played 10
    seasons the potential for career
sacks would have been in the 90 -100 neighborhood. He could have been the 49ers career leader in sacks.

  17. I have come to the conclusion that with Trent Williams demanding a new contract that the 49ers need to trade either BA or Deebo. I can't see any way they can afford BA and Williams while signing BP to 50 mill per season next year. It reminds me of 1995 and 96 where they had to shed multi millions in salary and didn't make another SB until 2012.

    1. I reckon the 49ers might be very lucky if Purdy only costs them $50M a year to sign next year. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the QB market has moved to the $60M+ range by that point.

      Delete
    2. For context - of the 15 highest paid QBs in the NFL, their average annual amount costs over 20% of the team's salary cap over the period of their contract, with Burrow's contract projected to comprise nearly 25%. With the way the salary cap has been increasing, could easily be up around $275M next year (first year of Purdy's new deal), and then over the next five years could easily rise to $325M+ by the time his deal ends. If the average salary cap over the five years is $300M, a contract of $60M per year would be 20%.

    3. No one really knows whats going to happen to the cap if the NFL doesn't win their appeal (and every legal expert i've heard from says the NFL is going to lose) The last team to sign their franchise QB could be in the worst place.

      TO YOUR POINT:
      * What ESPN projects 49ers QB Purdy could land with looming extension.
      https://sports.yahoo.com/espn-projects-49ers-qb-purdy-043259605.html
      * Barnwell wrote. "Right now, the top of the market for a quarterback coming off his third season is the five-year, $275 million deal signed by Jacksonville's Lawrence in June. Purdy has been a more productive and successful player than Lawrence, even if he doesn't have the same draft pedigree as the 2021 No. 1 overall pick.
"If he continues this level of play, my best estimate is that a Purdy deal would come in around five years and $325 million, for an average of $65 million per season. It's always possible the quarterback could take some semblance of a reduced salary to try to make life easier for his team, but after making just $2.6 million over the first three years of his existing deal, I'm not sure why he would be willing to cut the 49ers any slack."

      Delete
    5. Tua just signed for $52.5M a year. Love expected to sign soon for more than that.

Last offseason, the top QB extensions were in the $40-$45M per year range. This time next year I definitely don't think it is unreasonable to assume $60M+ per year will be around the rate top QBs sign for.

  18. According to L. Krueger the 9ers D line and CBs seem to be the strength of the team. They better be careful with their cuts or they could lose two or more players at those positions.

    * Yetur Gross-Matos: The former Carolina Panther registered at least one "sack" and one tackle for a loss of running back Jordan Mason.
Bosa, Gross-Matos, Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins, were the starting front 4 for the day. Leonard Floyd did not participate in team drills. KS had some good things to say about his development.
    * Charvarius Ward looks like he is back to himself after successful core muscle surgery during the offseason. The Pro Bowl cornerback broke up a pass from quarterback BP intended for Kittle and influenced the drop of another to Deebo Samuel.
    * Deommodore Lenoir broke up a pass from Purdy to Eric Saubert. * Sam Womack swatted down a pass from Josh Dobbs intended for Danny Gray which warranted a celebration from his defensive teammates.
    * Rookie safety Malik Mustapha nearly had his second interception in camp, breaking up a pass from Brandon Allen intended for Jauan Jennings.
    * The biggest play of the day goes to Darrell Luter, He picked off a pass from Dobbs that was intended for Jennings.

    * “He (Burford) makes that mistake, and I struggle with it,” 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster said Friday. “It’s my fault. I prepare them to play. It’s my job to get him to do it. It’s my fault. He didn’t have it down." “(Aaron) Banks missed a similar thing early in the game." Nobody talks about that one. It was a pressure and (Purdy) got the ball out.”

Pearsall went through a demanding rehab session on Thursday as his 49ers teammates were warming up for their second day of training camp. The club expects Pearsall to be ready for at least limited practice when the team returns to work on Monday after a day off on Sunday.
