Logan Thomas

Logan Thomas ran 80% of his pass routes last season from the slot or lined up out wide, as opposed to 20% inline. For comparison, Kittle ran 61.7% of his routes lined up inline last year. Shanahan now has his receiving TE opposite Kittle. Solid signing by the 49ers!

  1. LOGAN THOMAS: FROM A QB TO THE 9ERS NEW TE
    * The Arizona Cardinals selected Thomas as a QB in the 4th Rd. of the 2014 draft. At the age of 26, Thomas converted from QB to TE, having stints with the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions before signing with the Washington Commanders.
    The 32-year-old 6' 6" X 248 pound TE had 55 receptions for 496 yards and 4 TD's for the Commanders during the 2023 NFL season across 16 regular-season appearances.
    * Thomas will be the back up TE to Kittle and provide BP with another red zone target

    1. GEEP,
I'd like to see Thomas pack on some more muscle simply because I doubt that he's viewed as a deep threat. Also, because another added 10-15 lbs will help him when having to block. Good signing.

As a player converting from a QB to a TE, I'd be doubt the 9ers are signing Thomas for his ability to block?
      * Thomas was a good athlete. At his 2024 combine he ran a 4.61s 40, a 1.63s 10 yd split, a 7.05s 3 cone, a 4.18s 20 yd shuttle and 9' 10" broad jump... But that was 10 years ago.

  2. We got a 7 way battle royale now for 4 TE's if they keep as many as they did last year.

Don't know what you think about Cameron Latu, but If he doesn't show something in mini camp he could be an early cut?

    2. Geep,
Is he even physically ready to go? He wasn't ready for the voluntary workouts.

    3. All I know is Scott McCloughan absolutely loved Latu. Maybe he has a good camp or maybe his rehab hasn't gone as planned and he's a candidate for PUP.

    4. Yeah, I doubt that the 49ers will hold Latu's injured rookie year against him. When they drafted him they saw something in Latu that they felt could help the team. If he's fully healthy and has a good TC perception can change very quickly.

Here is what I've read about Latu:
      * Latu was a LB at Alabama, and switched to TE.
Alabama runs the ball and plays a physical style of football, so he should be a good blocker for the 49ers if he gets healthy and on the field. But to play, he'll have to show that he also can catch the ball, because he's a tight end, not an o-lineman. Last offseason, catching the ball was a big issue for Latu.
      * Latu ran a 4.78s, which is relatively slow. So he'll have trouble getting open because he doesn't have the quickness and explosion to beat man-to-man coverage, which means Kyle Shanahan will have to scheme him open. Shanahan can do that. But if Latu can't catch the ball, what's the point? Last offseason, Latu dropped more passes than he caught. At times it seemed like he was fighting the ball with his hands rather than catching it. Maybe he simply was pressing because he was a rookie. Whatever the case, he needs to show he can catch the ball.

Latu is still not fully recovered from a knee injury that saw him miss all of last season and I'm unable to find anything that is
projecting (date), when he'll be capable of playing.

    7. June 4, 2024 per RotoWire,
"Latu (knee) has suffered no setbacks in his recovery and is expected to be ready for training camp, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports."

With the signings of Sauer and Thomas plus last years rookie Willis, Latu will need to really impress. I think it's safe to say that Thomas will be Kittle's backup and Latu will be fighting to stay with the team or go on PS.

  4. And from what I’m reading he’s a solid blocker.

  6. Inside the Justin Jefferson deal
His new contract, which pays $35 million per year in new money, gets there without fluff or BS on the back end. It's a solid deal, one that likely will be replaced after three or four years, if he keeps performing the way he has.
Here are the full details on the deal, per a source with knowledge of the contract.

  7. I am thinking Logan could play emergency QB if needed.
