If It Ain't Broke

Just tweak it?

  1. I would be interested in seeing a breakdown of the 9ers passing O against zone D versus against man D

    1. Given Pearsall was one of the best route running wr's in the draft, do you think he's a "tweak" against man to man coverage?

    2. Razor,
Yes I think he is but mostly I think he is a 2025 replacement for Deebo as well as 2024 insurance against a Deebo injury.

    3. I'm not saying you're wrong but I'm also not one that believes it's a given Samuel is gone in 2025.

    4. I think it will be purely a cap decision

    5. The cap can be massaged and we got a great masseuse.

  2. I have some qualms about Pearsall making a big impression right away. I like Pearsall, but his college numbers came against some players that may never play in the NFL. Personally, I don't see Deebo moving until next year. By then Pearsall may have established his value as a starter for 2025. The same goes for Puni.
    TBD

  3. Pearcell's catch rate on 10+ yard targets was the best in his class. Had a lot of errant throws by his QB's the last 2 years and consequently was forced to make some spectacular catches. Has great hands and gives the offense something they haven't had, the slot fade route. His diagonal crossers are coverage killers. I think he could see a lot of his snaps on 3rd downs.

    1. I'm not denying Pearsall's accomplishments in college. What I'm doing is comparing him to Deebo's NFL accomplishments and at this point Pearsall has none. I have little doubt that Pearsall will make an impact at some point this season. But 2025 will be his coming out party, imho.

    2. In 3 years Purdy to Pearsall will be unstoppable.

    3. For the sake of a Superbowl victory, I'm with you on that.

  4. I think we are all kind of forgetting J. Jennings. His performace in the playoffs may have been better than either Deebo or Aiyuk. I see 24 being his breakout year. Maybe 40 catches or so to go along with 6 or 7 TDs as well as 10 to 15 third down conversions. I see him as well as Deebo being 2025 cap casualties.

    1. OC, I would be absolutely shocked if JJ did that.

I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum to you when it comes to Jennings. I love his effort and attitude, but as a receiver he is not that good imo. Yes, he had his moments in the playoffs, but that was largely because teams were setting out to stop CMC, Deebo and Aiyuk.

Put a good WR3 in there and they'll eat.

    2. Agreed Scooter. I won't be surprised if Pearsall eats into JJ's snaps.

    3. JJ has been money on third downs, not just in the playoffs.

    4. As was Bourne before him. Makes one wonder if it's the player... or the system.

    5. Lol! Decided to go check the stats to see - Bourne was good on 3rd downs, but Jennings has been better.

They both got around the same number of opportunities on 3rd down (Bourne slightly more, but then he also got more snaps in general), but Jennings has caught an absurd 71% of his 3rd down targets, converting 80% into 1st downs or TDs. Bourne caught 58% of 3rd down targets in his last 3 years with the 49ers, converting 86% into 1st downs or TDs.

So... I may have undersold Jennings' abilities on 3rd down a bit!

    6. Let's just say he's 3rd Down Currency. He does what you have to do when your 3rd on the totem pole. Catch everything that comes your way and make the most out of every opportunity.

  5. My favorite Niners Beat Report Matt Barrows:

What’s offensive life look like after Kyle Juszczyk? More empty back sets perhaps? — Gregg C.

I don’t know — Shanahan loves fullbacks. It’s been a long time since he didn’t have one on his roster. He’d try to find another in the event Juszczyk is gone. It will be interesting to watch Brayden Willis this offseason and see how much he lines up in the backfield. He’s the most H-back-y of the tight ends group and could take on a backfield role in the future.

While people talk about the two WRs taken indicating more 11 personnel, I still believe Kyle Shanahan follows the beat of his own drum. Do you believe the team will essentially “run it back” in terms of offensive philosophy, or evolve so quickly into more run ‘n’ gun? — Gerald B.

I’m with you. A Shanahan doesn’t change his spots. Everything will be geared to the young quarterback, and Shanahan believes a quarterback’s best friend is a stout running game.

He’ll shoot for a 50-50 run-pass split in 2024 just like he always does. In the most recent regular season, that split was 499-491 in favor of the run.

  6. The draft theme for the Niners this year was athletes and experience. I don't think they drafted one underclassman and 6 of the 8 picks had a 8+ RAS score. We'll need to keep that in mind next year....

  7. I found it interesting that according to ESPN's John Keim, Peters, the former assistant general manager for the San Francisco 49ers, spoke with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and star receiver Brandon Aiyuk for their opinion on top quarterback prospect Jayden Daniels.
