49ers Add DT

The #49ers have agreed to terms with #Browns DT Jordan Elliott on a 2-year, 10M deal, per @RapSheet. Elliott started 14 games for the Browns in 2023, registering 21 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and 1 pass defended. He also blocked a field goal. Elliott was 12th in the NFL in run stop win rate (40%) last season.

  1. Zierlein's analysis before his draft. Compared him to Kawann Short.

    1. Kocurek may be able to squeeze a little more juice out of him. TBD

  2. I think Schwartz runs a wide 9 defense so he's familiar with the scheme as well.

  3. Young starter on the best D in the NFL, sounds like a good signing to me. From what I have read the Browns really wanted to resign him but their cap wouldn't let them. All the 9ers signings are for 2 years I think that means they have a 2 year window before they will need to make some cap cuts.

    1. Yeah, I hadn't even considered him but this looks like a really smart signing. Excellent run stop percentages. Scheme fit.

Still need to add at least one other DT though if Armstead is indeed gone. DJ Jones would still be a great addition in my book.

  4. I expect Elliott will be the starter next to Hargrave, but also expect he will be heavily rotated and make way on passing downs. Beef up front to help fix the run D on early downs along with Gross-Matos.

    1. For context, he averaged between 40% and 50% of defensive snaps most weeks for the Browns last season.

    2. I would like to see them sign Calais Campbell for near the Vet minimum. Then they should draft one or two DTs.

    3. Yeah, they need at least 2 more DTs with the departures of Armstead, Kinlaw and potentially Givens. 1 through FA and 1 through the draft would make sense.

  5. Interesting. According to PFF Elliott has been one of the worst DTs in the NFL and not very good against the run. But then his run stop % is excellent. From what I have read outside of PFF it sounds like he was much improved overall last year though in Schwartz's scheme.

    1. I think he could be a similar signing to Feliciano last year in that most fans didn't think much of it but he turned out to be one of their best F/A pickups.

  6. Lavonte David got paid a lot more than I thought he would and Willie Gay less. FA can be funny.

    1. Makes you wonder what they know that we don't about Willie Gay. The Chiefs aren't afraid of character risk players if they help them win.

    2. I remember the Harbaugh years when it seemed like every week brought another arrest. Then there was the Reuben Foster fiasco. I'll take the high character guys they have signed/drafted since then.

  7. I'm concerned that the 49ers are returning to the Beathard/Mullens horrible back up era. I just don't see Brandon Allen stepping in and saving the 9ers season. The O line isn't great at protecting Purdy and he isn't the biggest QB out there. I have a feeling they won't but I would love to see them spend 5 or 6 mill on a veteran backup

  8. It would make sense to bring in a QB that's already familiar with Shanahan's intricate system. We know who that QB is.

  9. Lol, good point. But it's the other QB the raiders will be releasing.

  10. Aes,
Just watched a Youtube video that insinuated that the Broncos might be interested in Jimmy G

  11. Jimmy helped take the 49ers out of the dumpster fire when he came here. Maybe it's just me, but I was thankful for that, after he left. I wish him the best

  12. I will always have fond memories of Jimmy's time with the 9ers.

  13. The Chargers have to be under the cap by 1:00 tomorrow. If they release Joey Bosa I see the 9ers Making a run at him. I would be in favor of it if the contract is heavily weighted in incentives.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm not a fan of that possible move. The Bosa's seem to be a close-knit family. If the 49ers sign Joey, and release him at some point, it could have a negative effect on Nick. Of course, this could be further from the truth...but then again?

    1. Pretty sure the Bosa's know as well as anyone it's a business.

If you can get Joey on a small base but with incentives that keeps his 2024 cap hit low, I'd be interested.

    2. Joey would have to come cheap. The question is, what would the 49ers consider cheap?

  15. Chargers are $25 million over the cap. I expect them to make a move Friday.

  16. The #49ers are signing former #Chargers LB Eric Kendricks to a one-year deal, per
    @AdamSchefter

    Eric had 117 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, 7 TFL, 6 PBU’s and didn’t allow a TD in 465 coverage snaps in 2023

    1. Solid signing. Lombardi also reporting that Kendricks is one of the least penalized players which is great.

I hope Dee Winters or Jalen Graham can get playing time and become starters by the end of this season. Greenlaw is not under contract after 2024.

    2. Solid tackler and veteran presence. Among the 75 LBs who played 400+ snaps last season his missed tackle percentage of 6.0% ranked 7th best.

    3. I like the Kendrick signing. One thing is certain, if Floyd and Kendricks have a productive run, Branden Staley would be the 49ers best hire.

      Delete
    4. I'm betting Graham beats Kendrick out in training camp.

    5. Let the games begin! I'd love to see the young players pushing vets for more playing time.

Barring an 11th-hour deal, 49ers are expected to release Arik Armstead this afternoon. The other team to keep an eye on is the Chargers, who are roughly $25M over the cap and might have to cut some prominent names.

  18. Figured they'd want to rip the dead cap bandaid off rather than spread it out over the next 2 years when they'll begin Purdy's extension.

Trade: the Texans are trading defensive tackle Maliek Collins to the 49ers, per source.

  20. Highest pass rush win rates as interior defenders since 2021 (minimum 300 snaps):

    Aaron Donald 23%
    Chris Jones 21%
    Javon Hargrave 17%
    Quinnen Williams 15%
    Dexter Lawrence 15%
    Maliek Collins 14%

  21. 49ers now have true flexibility in the draft. No genuine "need" to overdraft a position at 31, and enough picks + sufficient roster depth they can move around if they want. I still think it will be an OL though, unless someone of great value at another position falls to them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. With the additions of Collins and Elliott I think the 49ers could still use another DT. Hargrave and Collins are excellent pass rushers on the interior but so so against the run. Gross-Matos can also slide inside on passing downs. Elliott has an excellent run stop % but other metrics suggest he doesn't excel at either run or pass.

Which makes me think a DT that is strong against the run would be the way to go in the draft. Kris Jenkins would be really nice, imo. But McKinnley Jackson looks like the type of guy Kocurek would be keen on.

  23. Scooter,
Good point. They've concentrated on defense via FA.. Depth at OL and hopefully a starter is what I'd like to see them focus on now. There will be some good OL value at 31. And maybe someone like Zak Zinter could be there in the 3rd rd.

  24. Elliot is gonna surprise a lot of people. I think he's an ascending player.

  25. Armstead has now officially been released, with a post June 1 designation as expected.

  26. According to multiple sources the Balt Ravens have reached out to the 9ers about a trade for D. Samuels. So far the 49ers haven't shown any interest in the trade.

  27. Looks like Kendricks decided to sign with the Cowgirls instead of us.
