1st Round: (31) Darius Robinson, DE, Missouri ~ Will be the big DE opposite Bosa to compliment their speed rushers, Jackson and Beal. Has inside out versatility.
2nd Round: (63) Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale ~ Prototypical length and size for the position. Can also play guard. Coming off surgery to repair quad injury sustained in 2023. 36" arms.
3rd Round: (94) Mike Sainristil, NB, Michigan ~ Smaller size allows the 49ers the opportunity to land one of my favorite players in the draft. He plays big and he plays smart.
3rd Round: (98) Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, S, Texas ~ Super versatile and smart defensive back with agility and closing speed. Over 500 special teams snaps.
4th Round: (131) Khristian Boyd, DT, Northern Iowa~Push-pull is his best move which was on display during the Shrine Bowl practices. Could fill that rotational role at 3t and 1t.
5th Round: (175) Anthony Gould, WR, Oregon State ~ New punt returner
6th Round: (208) Tatum Bathune, LB, Florida St ~ Instinctual inside linebacker with awareness to cover and make plays in the passing game. Great reactionary quickness.
6th Round: (213) Charles Turner III, C, LSU ~ Athletic and versatile center that could probably play RT in a pinch.
6th Round: (214) Trey Knox, TE, South Carolina ~ Wide receiver turned TE with a big catch radius. Can block inline, in space and seperate from man before the catch point.
7th Round: (248) Jaden Shirden, RB, Monmouth ~ Reminds me of Mostert and had huge production with 23 TD's in 2 years. Has the talent for this offense that I'd take a flyer on.

Former NFL 9er players and 2024 free agents the FO could target in free agency. The 9ers S/B able to sign them to a contract at a reasonable price!
ReplyDelete* LB Azeez Al-Shaair: A replacement for Dre Greenlaw as he recovers from an Achilles tear. He could also replace Greenlaw if he leaves as a free agency next season.
* CB Emmanuel Moseley: ACL tears in 2022 and 2023 tears means the 9ers can't rely too heavily on him. But he shouldn't be expensive and is a quality player when healthy. He would compete for a job both outside and in the slot.
* WR Kendrick Bourne: Signing him would depend on retaining WR Jennings. If the 9ers lose Jennings, Bourne would be a reliable WR
replacement.
* DL Hassan Ridgeway: A good player for the 9ers in 2022 before suffering a season-ending pectoral injury. He was also injured with the Texans where he had two stints on IR. His health history may drive the 9ers away, but if they’re confident he can remain healthy in 2024, they may sign him in as a rotational interior DL where his snaps could be limited.
* QB Nate Sudfeld: BP beat out Sudfeld for a roster spot in 2022, but before that season SF guaranteed Sudfeld a couple million dollars under the assumption he’d be QB2 behind Lance and JG.
It’s clear KS likes him, and with no other QBs on the roster the 9ers could sign Sudfeld as the backup QB to BP.

The fact the DC hasn't been announced yet makes me believe their first choice candidate is from outside the organisation. And they are having some difficulties closing the deal.

DeleteThat makes sense to me. The only reason I had come to the conclusion that they were going with an inside candidate was that all of the known outside candidates (other than Carroll) are 3-4 disciples. Belichick, Staley and Vrable are 3-4 coaches. If they were going to go 3-4 they should have hired Fangio. Maybe thats the hold up which D they are going to run. I hope they learned their lesson about hiring D coordinators and forcing them to teach a D they have never taught. Maybe its Carroll.

DeleteI see Shanahan has now provided a list of who has interviewed, and also that Bullocks is scheduled to interview this week. I was under the belief the interviews all happened last week, but if Bullocks is yet to do so then that is likely what the hold up is ' not everyone they want to speak to has had a chance to interview yet.

ReplyDeleteIts funny how different all these draft sites/mock drafts are. On one site a player goes in the 2nd round in another one the same player can go in the late 4th. Hopefully things will tighten up a little after the combine.

ReplyDeleteIn college Jackson was known for his athleticism and quickness. Last year he put on more weight and strength in the off season. After the first game against Pittsburgh, Jackson looked tired and uncomfortable in every game thereafter. I don't know if the extra weight and strength may have limited his athleticism, but he certainly looked slower and winded.
The question now becomes will the 49ers give him the time to develop or look for someone to replace him? I doubt the 49ers want to find themselves in another Solomon Thomas situation.
The Niners are losing maybe 6 defensive linemen. That's the position group they value most in the first round so it won't surprise me if thats the direction they go on days 1 and 2.

Delete12 days until free agency begins. the 49ers can go two ways, restructure and sign 2 or 3 big to medium level outside FAs along with Aiyuk and a couple of inside FAs. They could trade Aiyuk, sign 1 major FA and use the rest of their cap to renegotiate players all ready on the roster including roll over money for BP next year. Which way would you go?

Re-sign Jennings, maybe Feliciano and Ferrell.
In FA, I would be looking to add a starting calibre RT, either a nickel or outside CB capable of starting (depends on what they want to do with Demo), and potentially a DT that is strong in run defense.
I'm undecided on what to do at DE. Cap space permitting I would love to bring in a quality starter opposite Bosa. But may need to resort to adding another Kocurek special and using the draft.

DeleteWhat do you think of them signing a two headed DE. Ferrell for run downs and Bryce Huff of the Ny Jets as a pass rushing specialist? I think they could sign both of them for a combined 12 mill or less.
Kind of like how they used Ebukam and Key/ Omenihu. I think it works.

DeleteJohn Lynch spoke at the combine today. He stated that the 49ers would not be changing their defensive scheme. They would remai a 4-3 wide 9 D. Does that insure the 9ers will hire from within, in that all the other applicants are 3-4 coaches?
ReplyDeleteThe only way they'd trade Aiyuk is if a team is offering a top 15 pick and I don't see that happening. I don't think they intend on trading him. His market value is 23 mill. Say his camp is asking for 30 and they meet somewhere around 25 is how it'll probably go.
ReplyDeleteIsaac Guerendo, RB, Lousiville looks like a Bobby Turner back. 220-pound (verified at Shrine) running back. A former 4x100 meter relay state champion, Guerendo is expected to run the 40-yard dash in the high 4.3s. The Clayton, Indiana native is a former 100-meter state champion (10.51). For reference, Usain Bolt's world record time is 9.58.
ReplyDeleteThe more I think about it, the more I think the path to prolonging success for the 49ers lies in building up the OL.
ReplyDeleteThey now have their QB, and he's shown his ability to make plays from the pocket plus deliver under pass rush duress. They have some great weapons around him. Now give him a top line OL that will consistently give him cleaner pockets and open holes for the run game.
The team started the transition into leaning more on offense than defense last season. Time to complete the transition.
That's not to say they should neglect the defense - they should still be aiming to field a top line D. But its time for the offense to be the main reason they win big games.
Not gonna be any top OL at 31. Latham is the safest and he's going top 10. Not a big fan of Alt. I think they wait until day 3 to address the OL by taking a couple OT's and an OG. They still got Zakelj and Bartch to compete with Brendel.

One of the key reasons the offense sputtered a bit during the playoffs is that the OL wasn't able to dominate, and Purdy was under a lot of pressure. Thankfully he handles pressure pretty well, but to win big games consistently you don't want to force your QB to have to make plays under duress.
The problem is the value just won't be there for OL at 31.

Good not elite. The likely ones left at 31 like Guyton, Mims, Morgon, Barton, Paul, and Suamataia don't represent the value that a Darius Robinson or a Leonard Taylor III would, both bigger positions of need. Javon Foster at the end of round 3 is an OT who in my mind represents better value at the position.
DeleteI'll admit I'm not good with knowing what will make a good OT, but those guys are ranked as late day 1/ early day 2 guys, as are the DL you mentioned.
DeleteEverything I have read suggests the OT group is really good this year, so I would expect some of the late 1st/ early 2nd guys to be legit good starters in the NFL.
Mims scares me at 31. I like him but only 8 starts. Guyton is another McGlinchey to me. Morgon's arm length isn't good. All these guys aren't ready for primetime and probably won't be until next year is all I'm saying. You'd need to trade up for a legit 2024 starter in my humble opinion.

The #49ers are interviewing #Chiefs defensive backs coach David Merritt for their defensive coordinator position, sources say. Merritt, a longtime trusted assistant for Steve Spagnuolo, helped coach up KC’s fourth-ranked pass defense this season.

ReplyDeleteOh my God these DEs are so fast. They are running early 2000s WR times. It almost makes you ignore 40 times and just watch game tape. There are too many DEs running 4.7 and below who have Avg. game stats.

I think Orhorhoro could play DE and reduce inside on 3rd downs.
ReplyDeleteOkay but I believe they need more of a rotational DT than a 3rd down pass rush specialist. I think they need a starter level #3 DT who can step in as a starter when Armstead's foot issue forces him out of the iine up for 4 or 5 games.

ReplyDeleteI also like Melton. I like seeing DBs who can quickly change directions off their cuts. Melton was very good at that during his workout. Watching video also shows he is a very tackler. Question is, which rd will the 49ers pick him if they target him.

DeleteThey need a contingency plan (say, Gipson), but I don't think they should proceed on the assumption Hufanga won't be available. ACL injury late November means he should be expected to be ready to participate in training camp.
DeleteGreenlaw though I agree. Achilles injury in February... best case scenario is around 6 months, but realistically they'll be lucky if he's ready come mid season.
I think they will be replacing Greenlaw with Azeez Al-Shaair. He has replaced his Tenn highlights on his social media with his 49ers highlights. He also was in the 49ers LBs huddle on the field before the SB. He can replace Greenlaw until he is 100% (which possibly won't be this season) and step into the #3 LB spot when/if Greenlaw comes back. He will probably cost about 7 mill a year.
DeleteI think Gippy said he's retiring. Hufanga might be ready, but you can't assume he will be. He could easily have a set back, and he surely won't be the same player until next year, maybe last quarter of the season at the earliest.
DeleteOC, I can't help but feel Al-Shaair can get himself a big contract somewhere in FA. He had a good year for the Titans. And 49ers can't afford 3 big contracts at LB.
DeleteAlso, when Greenlaw comes back, would Al-Shaair be happy being the 3rd LB? He was the main guy for the Titans and top 5 in the NFL in total tackles.
Razor, Gippy may well retire. If he does, I think they should still look at FA for a veteran contingency plan. The hope should be that Hufanga and Brown are the long term starting safeties, so no need to spend a day 1 or 2 pick on the position imo.

Greenlaw's contract is over after 24 so if he isn't able to fully return having Al-Shaair under contract would protect the team. Greenlaw's current contract pays him about 8 mill a year, I can't see Al-Shaair getting more than that. As to Hufanga he wasn't very fast before the injury my concern is after an ACL injury he might lose a step which could make him too slow.
OC, I would take the articles about the 49ers being able to create heaps of cap space with a few grains of salt.
DeleteThey "can" do it. But because they were very aggressive with restructures last year to create rollover it means doing a lot of restructuring again this year will start creating a lot of dead cap hits in the next few years. I don't see them going overboard with it.
Yes, Greenlaw's contract ends after 24. But I still don't see them carrying three big LB contracts this year. And as I said, I think Al-Shaair has proven now he's a legit good starting LB so I would be surprised if he can't get a good sized multi year contract somewhere.
Not to mention the 49ers invested at LB in last year's draft.
With Hufanga, yes, there's risks associated with the injury. But he's young and already an All Pro. I just don't see the 49ers looking to draft another safety high this year with him on the roster and drafting Brown last year. Have a contingency in place, sure, but don't plan ahead as if expecting the worst on this one.
Hufanga is under contract for this year and then he's UFA. The determination that he'll be a long term fixture is very much in question. How he comes back from the injury but also how much money they'll want to give him if he does indeed look like he's back to being an All-Pro.

Watching the TEs go through the workouts today gave me one surprise that might be available in the 4-5th rd. Tip Reiman at6'4" 270lbs and a 4.6 range 40 was my 49ers hopeful draft pick. What do you guy think of him as a late pick?
