Gameday Week 17: 49ers vs Commanders

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to gameday live. San Francisco can wrap up the number one seed with a win and an Eagles loss today. Washington has allowed a passer rating of 113.0 this season, highest in the NFL. I expect Brock to bounce back and have a Purdy good day. The Redskins will turn to Howell at quarterback after Brissett got injured. He's been a turnover machine and he'll be going up against a 49ers defense that's been taking the ball away. He'll need the game of his life to pull an upset. I don't see that happening. San Fran big in this one, 33-10. Go Niners!

#49ers inactives today at Washington: QB Brandon Allen (3rd QB) WR Jauan Jennings (concussion) S Ji'Ayir Brown (knee) OL Jaylon Moore (concussion) TE Ross Dwelley (ankle) DL Arik Armstead (foot) LB Jalen Graham

  1. Arizona really was a gas
Eagles screwed up in a total mess
Lead blowing all the way, you know
You can kiss that #1 seed goodbye

  2. Christmas came late....on New Year's eve. Great comeback from Brock. He was calm and made a few great throws to Aiyuk. Run D was suspect, but D just gave up 10 pts. Very impressed by Wilks and the Resilient D missing Armsted, Hufanga, Brown.

Happy that we survived Fedex Field, aka "The Graveyard"....on a side note, NFC West is gonna be nuts next year!

NFC no 1 seed locked up. We have to rest up the starters especially CMC, Trent and Brock, so that they get two weeks off.

Goals next week....Make Darnold look good, so he gets us a comp pick...or make him look real bad (he does that on his own) and sign him for vet min next year.

  3. Mug,
Must rest starters CMC, Trent, Brock lets not forget Hargrave, Bosa, Warner and Greenlaw. I would only play Deebo, Kittle and Aiyuk about a quarter. Todays date 12/31 the next time the 9ers will play their whole team Jan 20. How long is too long? Will they be rusty by the 20th?

  4. I'm not so sure Shanny will want to rest his starters for 2 weeks. Wouldn't surprise me to see the one's play a quarter or so. I can't imagine he'd want Purdy out there without Williams either. Players like Armstead and CMC are two that probably would NOT play. Jennings I think would play. We'll see. Should be interesting.

    1. Yeah, I am with you, I think they only rest guys that are really banged up. 3 weeks between games is a long time. Don't want to be going into a do-or-die game rusty.

    2. I would sit a lot more guys- there was a SIGNIFICANT difference when Deebo didn't play...... I would sit as many starters as possibly, personally- but most certainly Ward, Lenoir, Deebo and Kittle would be added to the obvious- and w the depth issues at S, Gipson as well

  5. #49ers QB Brock Purdy was 5-of-5 for 112 yards and a TD on throws of 15-plus air yards on Sunday.

For the season, he's completed 67% of those throws, which -- if it holds -- would be best the by any QB since ESPN began tracking air yards in 2006.

    1. Nice bounce back game for Purdy. I had a good sense that he was able to do so. There were a couple of risky throws that gave me pause, but Purdy did more than enough to win.
At the moment, I'm more concerned with the 49ers defense. I saw weak attempts at tackling and Thomas looking a little like the guy who was benched a couple of years ago. Leniore had a good game. Still, the 49ers beat a team they were supposed to beat and that's what matters.

    2. Purdy also had a beautiful long pass to Juice that Juice dropped

      Delete
    3. Correct. But, I didn't consider it a "gimme catch." Also, had Shanahan involved Juice a little more in the passing game throughout the season, who knows, maybe he makes that catch. Hopefully, today's game is an indication that Shanahan plans to use Juice a little more than just a lead blocker in the playoffs.

  6. As much as I'd like to see the 9ers beat LA, why risk starters getting injured for a meaningless game? Play the starters in the first Qtr, then let the backups finish the game. What better time to evaluate back up players, to see who the 9er should retain next season?
    * With 11 draft picks, IMO, the 9er FO should evaluate all the OL players, especially the ROT! Then draft one, if not 2. OT's. Also an OC and an OG for competition and keeping BP healthy.

  7. The 49ers are the first team in NFL history to have a running back, two wide receivers and a tight end all hit over 1,000 all-purpose yards in a single season

  9. In today's win,
    @brockpurdy13
recorded his 10th career game with a 120+ rating, surpassing Russell Wilson (9 games) for the most such games by a player in his 1st 2 seasons in
    @NFL
    history.

  10. Another player that had a good game today was Eli Mitchell. He needs to do whatever it takes to stay healthy. Mitchell is our best RB not named CMC.

    1. My concern about Mitchell is the 9ers won't resign him this off season because he can't stay healthy and he will turn into the next Raheem Mostert.

      Delete
    2. You're right, Coach. But, if Mitchell walks and becomes a star for another team and stays healthy, I would be happy for him. Unfortunately, there are players that are just injury prone and have short careers. If you remember, we had a RB named Kendall Hunter who broke some of Barry Sanders' records at Okl. St., that I was excited about. He sustained an injury and was gone after a few years. I like Mitchell a lot, he has all the skills to be top rated RB, if not for those nagging injuries.

    3. Mitchell is under contract next season. He's not going anywhere for at least 1 more season.

    4. Scooter,
I have no idea what they plan for him but they could trade him or release him if it isn't too big of a cap hit.

      Delete
    5. Always a possibility. I think Shanahan really likes him though. Doubt they'd straight up cut him. But a trade sounds like something they'd consider.

      Delete
    6. Scooter,
They would need a very good third back. Who knows maybe Frank Gore Jr.

    7. I haven't watched much of Gore Jr, but would be nice to bring the name home if he's any good.

  12. Brandon Aiyuk’s rankings among receivers:

    ➤ Yards Per Catch: 18.3 (#1)
    ➤ 20+ Yard Receiving Plays: 28 (#2)
    ➤ Receiving Yards: 1,317 (#6)
    ➤ PFF’s Receiving Grade: 92.0 (#2)

  13. Brock Purdy completed 63.8% of his deep passes this year, by far the highest percentage on NFL record (PFF has tracked this for about 20 years)

  14. As the coaches prepare for the Rams, I wish our O and D will watch the Rams' tape on their games against the Browns and Ravens.

The Rams blew out the Flacco led Browns 36-19 and played Ravens tough in Baltimore and lost in OT to a Special Teams play (punt return TD).

We always own the Rams, and our personnel is far superior. But our coaching staff needs to look at what McVay and Raheem Morris did to have success against Jim Schwartz and Mike MacDonald.

This kind of humility and work ethic is needed to bring home the 6th and make this "special" season a "memorable" one. We can beat the Ravens or whomever is left standing in the AFC. Go Niners!

    1. Mug,
I think it has to do with very talented and very fast safeties and LBs. They take away the middle of the field and thats where BP lives. Also they can get very good pressure with 4.

  15. What an incredible day of college football. The national championship game between the Big 10 Vs the Pac 12 back where it belongs with no SEC teams. Reminds me of the 60s and 70s. Its nice to see 2 schools with academic standards.

On a different note. CMC is being ruled out against the Rams. Good call!

  17. Deebo has confirmed the starters will play "a good bit" against the Rams. I think it is a good decision by Shanahan. They've already got an extra week to rest and recover courtesy of the one seed.

  18. No matter, this is the Harbaughs' year, Jim's and John's. Jim will win the college football championship next Monday and then join the Raiders as their head coach; John will defeat the 49ers yet again and claim the Super Bowl and NFL championship. What an amazing coaching family, the Harbaughs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The flip side of this (there's always a flip side) is that Jim will lose at the Natty and John will lose at the SB. Remember, when the Patriots went undefeated during the regular season then lost to the Giants in the SB? Yup, nothing is guaranteed in the NFL.

      Delete
    2. Harbaugh would have to be an idiot and he isn't an idiot to take the Raiders job when both Chi and SD would both pay him the house to coach their teams.Let me see Jimmy G/A O'Connell or J. Herbert not that difficult of a decision.

      Delete
  19. Coach,
In Chicago, Harbaugh could build a defense that would be a top ten in the league. They also have the 1st pick in the draft.

The Chargers have a very good young QB to build around.

The raiders have sinned against the football gods, lol. Jk, but they definitely are a dysfunctional franchise that continually seem to shoot themselves in the foot.
The best chance for Harbaugh winning in his return to the NFL is with the Chargers.

  20. AES,
Chicago has the first pick and the 10th pick. Fields made big strides this year so Chi might not draft a QB. They could trade down from #1 and end up with 3 first round picks and an extra first for a few years. SD is certainly the short term answer but for the long term Chi might be the way to go. imho

    1. Yes, Chicago is in a good position to make some noise in the draft. But, if I'm the Bears, I can’t honestly say that I'm completely sold on Fields. Consistency, seems to be his flaw.
Where as, Herbert is already an established QB and only needs some pieces around him and a good head coach. I think Caleb Williams might be a big part of the Bears inner-circle discussions leading up to the draft.
