Gameday Week 6: 49ers vs. Browns

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the live blog for 49ers gameday action. Today the 49ers visit the dog pound on a crisp fall day. No rain is expected until 5pm est which bodes well for San Francisco. Temperatures in the 50's and it looks to be somewhat windy. The Browns will be without their stud rb and starting qb. The Browns DC Schwartz has gotten the best out of his matchups with Shanny so this game will be no cake walk for the offense, but I'm anticipating Schwartz's defense to wear down by the end of the 3rd quarter from all the 3 and outs by the Browns offense. 31-13 Niners, let's go!

49ers inactive vs Browns: LB Dre Greenlaw RB Ty Davis-Price OL Matt Pryor DL Kalia Davis LB Jalen Graham TE Brayden Willis

  1. * I also expect the Browns defense to match up with the 9ers offense, but wear down in the 2nd half.
    * Without QB Deshaun Watson, RB Nick Chubb and LG Joel Bitonio, I expect the 9er D to control the Browns run game and force backup QB, PJ Walker, into making mistakes. The 9er DB's need to keep WR
Amari Cooper from having a big game, while controlling Donovan Peoples-Jones.
    * The 9er O-line controlled Dallas Micah Parsons. To win, they must do the same with DE Myles Garrett and the Browns D. * While the 9ers O-line has proven to be better than given credit for. Can they open holes for CMC and give BP time to connect with his receivers against the Brown defense? If they can, they'll win the game.
    * The Browns DB's Denzel Ward and Grant Delpit match up with
Deebo and Aiyuk, but not Kittle. I also look for KS to get Juice, Jauan Jennings and Ronnie Bell more involved in the passing game.
    * To win the game, the Browns will need to score early, get up by 10
or more, get the crowd involved and make it hard for the 9ers to hear the snap count and force the 9er offense into turnovers
    9ers win 27 ---- Browns 17

  2. Great start. Sure looks like teams are targeting CMC. Why didn't someone on the 49ers sideline grab onto him to slow him down before he crashed into the bench wall?

  3. Big holes in the defense. Wilks needs to adjust.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Agreed. It might be partially due to Greenlaw being out.

    2. He brings lots of energy for sure.

  5. Really good throw by Purdy in the face of pressure. Too bad Aiyuk couldn't come up with it.

  6. Right decision to go for the field goal. Points will be tough to come by today.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Defense looks as bad as I have seen them this year.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Lets see if we see some adjustments at half time.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Well, we're finally getting to see what bad Brock Purdy looks like.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Maybe, but Aiyuk missed a great throw that Purdy made under duress. Aiyuk has not had a good game. Deebo out, and now CMC seems like he is hurting.

  10. Purdy looks terrible. The D looks terrible. Bad game plans by Wilks and KS

  11. I think we’ve found Purdy’ weak spot. A wet football. Seems he’s having trouble gripping and ripping it.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Jim Shwartz dominating Shanahan again

    ReplyDelete
  13. KS said he wanted to see how the team responded to some adversity. So far... not well!

    ReplyDelete
  14. KS's game plan since the first drive has been terrible

    ReplyDelete
  15. As bad as we've seen the offense in a good long while.

  16. Mood Indigo here.
Great play by the D. Second INT.
Good opportunity for the Niners to face adversity early in season. The O line has not played well overall. Purdy has not faced this level of adversity -- wet field, top defense and injured stars. A learning experience.

  17. Feels fitting the refs decide this one.

  18. OL sucked this game. Not all Purdy's fault. He was running for his life and when he could get a throw off there was a guy in his face.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You don't spend 3rd round picks on kickers for that to happen.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Exactly. He missed two today. I was against the pick when it was made.

  20. I didn't like using a high pick for a rookie kicker. If you can, always get a kicker who has experience especially at kicking game winners. Let rookies perfect their craft somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, the bad game was always going to happen. Sucks they couldn't steal it at the end there. Had their opportunities. But also didn't really deserve to win it.

    2. Hey cubus - looks like I'm going to be pretty busy for a little while yet, up until xmas I expect. Hoping to take a bit of a break over xmas and NY, so hopefully be back posting articles around then.

  22. Well, at least the Seahags lost.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, the 49ers were able to get this one out of the way. I had high hopes for Moody going into the season. Now, it looks like I may need to hold my breath every time he tries a field goal. That's not good for my health, lol.

    1. Ha. Being a 49ers fan automatically takes at least ten years off your life. That's why you have to eat healthy, exercise and manage the other stresses in your life in order to break even.

  24. Jets win, Seahags lost - mitigates the loss.

  25. Cubus,
I swear, I went bald during the Akex Smith/Kaepernick era!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Just one of those games when all three phases failed. Doesn't change my opinion of the Niners or Purdy. Now the kicker who I have been high on sucks at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  27. We needed a game like this...always good to be humbled in life!

Silver lining is that this loss came against an AFC opponent....not much impact seeding wise. Nice that Seahawks and Eagles lost. Show some humility (talking to you Kittle), learn from mistakes and take care of business .

I believe this will be a special season for us! Go Niners!

    ReplyDelete
  28. two observations 1 our offensive line is way below average 2 Dre Greenlaw is really underrated with him out the run defense just crumbled

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hopefully this last game is to this years 9ers what the Eagle game was to the 94 9ers. A wake up call but I don't think this O line is a SB winning line and BP hasn't proven to me yet that he is a SB winning QB. imho

  30. All these folks who say "Shanahan should be fired" or "Brock is just trash" should just calm down. We still have the best record at 5-1 and control our own destiny with 2/3rds of the season to go....couldn't ask for anything more.

That being said, we need improvement in multiple facets...

    1) Shanahan needs to run the ball more with Jordan Mason....the guy had 5 yards per carry....and only 5 carries for crying out loud. This is criminal.
    2) Defense missed 18 tackles yesterday. Wilks needs to be on top of this. Missed tackle = lost playing time, that should be the the way it is.
    3) Special Teams - Needs to practice in the rain with a wet ball. So many bone-headed plays yesterday by ST.
    4) Brock...needs to start practicing throwing with a wet ball to Aiyuk.

Champions get 1% better everyday.... Aggregation of marginal gains!! Go Niners!

    1. Mugee,
#2 only works if your 2nd string players are starting caliber players. In todays salary cap era that seldom is true. Benching say I. Oliver for A. Thomas because of missed tackles is a recipe for disaster. imho

      Delete
    2. OldCoach - The coaches need to figure it out and hold players accountable to the "Standard".

We had 18 missed tackles in the last game alone.

This season, we have also committed 45 penalties for 384 yards....both 2nd in the league. The standard is slipping....Not good!

      Delete
    3. Mugee,
I agree especially the penalties Do you know the breakdown on the penalties IE how many on the D, O and ST? I believe the missed tackles can be traced back to the soft zone D they play. The DBs are so far off the receivers when they catch the ball that the receivers have time to face the DBs and make a move. Leading to missed tackles.imho

    4. Check this link out OldCoach....point on the heading to know the nature of the penalty.

      https://www.footballdb.com/stats/penalties.html

      DG = Delay of Game
      FS = False Start
      OH = Offensive Holding

We have had 4 DGs, 8 FSs and 5 OHs etc. These 3 categories seem to be Offense and the rest a combination of ST and D.

  31. AES,
After a few days from the loss, I'm feeling a little better. I've convinced myself that the 49ers were not going undefeated this season and that we lost to a top defensive Cleveland team. Purdy did not have his usual stellar game, but he did enough to put the team in position to win. But, Moody has to kick a 41 yrd FG in these situations, period. Also, this was perhaps one of the worse officiated games that I can remember. Not just on the Gipson call, but throughout the entire game. I hope that the NFL reviews this officiating team going forward. I would hate to see these guys covering a 49ers playoff game.

  32. Thats why I have been screaming for professional official for years maybe decades. I read an article that said it would cost the NFL owners one quarter of one percent of their profits to have full time professional refs.

  35. AES,
Good call Coach. It would great to keep the IT49ersB commun
ity together. Hopefully, the PD considers this and reaches out to you.

  36. Attention any one who is part of the Inside the 49ers community as well as the Inspired 49ers community. I just received a response to my email to the Press Democrat from John D'Anna. He wrote that the Press Democrat is actively looking for a moderator for the Inside The 49ers site. They have already spoken to a couple of candidates. The feeling I got from Mr. D'Anna's email is they are looking for a staff writer something like when Phil Barber or Matt Maiocco were the moderators. Any way it sounds like there may be a replacement soon.

    ReplyDelete
  37. AES,
Thanks, Coach. It's a wise decision for the PD to keep their blog continue. Again, I hope that they give you considerable. All4, would also make a fine candidate.

  38. OldCoach
Thanks for taking the time and effort to update the Press Democrat moderator status. All things considered, I'm taking a break from the PD blog! If a new moderator eliminates the political and religious dogma, the old crowd returns and the topic pertains to the 49er game, I'll consider posting again?
Until then, it's good seeing you here in the Inspired 49er blog and I hope others from the PD blog join us.

  39. Geep,
I think I will continue to post on both sights. This site doesn't seem to attract much traffic. Is that normal?

"This site doesn't seem to attract much traffic. Is that normal?"
Nope! The blog usually has about the same amount of posts as the PD blog, but one of the two major contributors (Scooter McG), says until ~Xmas his work is requiring most of his time. Not sure why the other major contributor (Razor eater), is MIA?
You'll appreciate the fact neither Felix or 49Reasons are participants.
49Reasons is persona non grata, while Felix hasn't found this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  41. We're not here to "attract traffic". This site is for the old PD bloggers who want to stay in touch.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Razoreater
Correct me if I'm wrong, but why wouldn't you want to attract old PD bloggers such as OldCoach, AES, allforfunnplay, 1.6 Patriot, Dee Phiant, ninermd and whine country (to name a few)?
You likely remember most, if not all, of them from the PD blog before you started the Inspired 49er blog?
If the new PD moderator turns out to be less than satisfactory, the Inspired 49ers blog would satisfy the very condition you stated!
To provide a site for the old PD bloggers who want to stay in touch?

    1. I don't consider old PD bloggers as "traffic". When the PD blog went dark, George wanted a blog to keep in touch and I obliged.
