Brock Purdy: Keeping It Real

The 49ers have been exremely effusive in their praise of Brock Purdy's 8 games, with the most recent comments by GM, John Lynch; "Is it a flash in the pan or is it the real deal? As we've gone back and studied it, he played at a high, high level. Not only played within the system, he made a lot of plays outside the system by extending plays. He showed tremendous playmaking ability. He showed tremendous ability to run the system efficiently, effectively, ***push the ball downfield*** — he just had an incredible first year, Brock is the leader in the clubhouse, as we said, but it’s open for competition”.

Sounds like the 49ers are sold on Purdy already, but should they be? I'm not going to dismiss what he did, which is win but I did take a look at what Quinn and Carroll were able to do to him in those playoff games. Cover 1 Robber forces the quarterback to push the ball downfield, and regulated CMC to a paltry 14 carries for 51 yards and 8 catches for 22 yards. In order to get the running game going the quarterback has to force the defense into a Cover 2. This is the next step in Brock's evolution to determine if he really is the 49ers franchise quarterback. Coming off a serious injury to his throwing arm, Brock Purdy will need to show he can force defenses into a 2-man shell. If he can do that, then they have their franchise quarterback. If not, the search for the next 49ers franchise quarterback will continue.

  1. Besides winning the main thing that I love about Purdy is his football instincts, something that Brady and Montana had. That is not intended for comparisons as Purdy is a long way off for that. Flash in the pan you say, well that is a very fair statement as we have seen many flashes then failures. There is absolutely no reason to get rid of Lance who I think may have a bigger upside but like JG seems to be injured a lot and is very inexperienced. I was never enthralled with the trade that brought Lance here but that doesn't mean I don't like Lance it just means I don't like the trade.

  2. My two cents:

-In playoff football the teams are better, and it should be harder for one team to beat another. Obviously we won both of those games.
-Purdy, like uc said, has the instincts, plus accuracy, a quite serviceable arm, escapability, and efficiency.
-While Lance may have bigger upside, when he's played I haven't seen the instincts. Maybe that's due to such a small sample size, but you saw that in Brock early in the Miami game. With Lance I've seen a deer in headlights. Maybe that's due to lack of experience, idk.

  3. Didn't sound as though Griese is that high on Purdy, and that he's got a lot to work on. Sounds like Griese is high on Darnold.

  4. That's scary.
While Trey and Darnold are clearly the more physically gifted qbs. One struggles to hit the mark consistently and the other struggles not to hit the opponent in the chest.
Honestly, I'm not sure about the qbs this year given Brock's injury.

I would like to see more of Trey but his passing scares me to death.

  5. Brock needs to show first if his arm is the same like before secondly if he is better than Jimmy G.
Trey needs to be available and if his improved mechanics will get him get the ball quicker out.

  6. * THE BEST NEWS FROM 9ER OTA's: Brock Purdy is ahead of schedule in his return from offseason UCL surgery and throwing 3 times per week.
    * the 2ND BEST NEWS FROM 9ER OTA's: After 2 weeks of OTA practices Trey Lance and Sam Darnold are in a dead heat in the QB battle. The more 9er QB competition there is, the better.

    1. The QB news is indeed encouraging, across the board.

I'm also very pleased with what I'm hearing about the WRs. Sounds like Aiyuk has gone up another notch, Gray is starting to make some plays, and most encouraging of all was hearing Deebo acknowledge he was poor last year because he really regressed as a WR.

  7. The 49ers held their first of two mandatory veteran mini-camp practices Tuesday morning. This was by far the best Lance has looked during the three offseason practices open to the media. Lance finished the day 9-14 with three touchdowns.

  8. Day 2 of 9er Mini-camp
    * Jordan Mason continued his strong offseason as a receiver. Today the second year back brought in all three of his targets for the second day in a row.
    * D’Shawn Jamison, the UDFA, was all over the field today. The former Texas Longhorn did not allow a reception on four targets including a pair of pass breakups.
    * The rookie kicker, Jake Moody, hit every kick including booming a 58-yard field goal into a slight breeze.
    * The rookie linebacker, Dee Winters worked with the 2nd unit for the 2nd day in a row. In pass coverage, Winters was able to read the play correctly and was right on top of Ty Davis-Price to defend a short check down throw. He is fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster.
    * Colton McKivitz has looked solid in pass protection over the 2 mini-camp practice. Working against Drake Jackson and Kerry Hyder, he has been able to neutralize the two pass rushers.
    * Jon Feliciano and Matt Pryor took all of the second unit snaps at C and RT during minicamp. In addition, Feliciano has worked at RG during the individual periods.

    1. He could be a weapon for the 49ers this year.

    2. That's why I didn't have a problem with his draft position. He should also give the defense a longer field to defend.

  10. George: Does anyone here have a field for how Dalvin Cook would fit into the offense? I know it's a long shot compensation-wise, but stranger things have happened.

    1. Correction: "have a feel for how Dalvin Cook would fit . . ."

    2. I see no scenario where the 49ers would bring in Cook. Not sure where that rumour has come from. But in terms of fit, he's excellent attacking the edge. He'd be good in this type of offense.

    3. George: It’s not a rumor. My thought. We have only two RBs we can count on. The UDFA RBs this year are ho hum. If CMC goes down, there’s Debo I suppose. We need another productive back pure and simple. Maybe Cook would play here for the ring.

    4. I see. I just don't see it due to the cap.

Cook is a feature back, as is CMC. Doubt he is interested going somewhere he won't be the feature back.

  11. Anyone think Purdy is worth north of 45 million a year? He's good and cheap but he's not worth that 2nd contract to me.

    1. George: Ok I’ll play. What would you pay for him?

    2. I don't think anyone can make a judgement one way or the other after 9 games. Thankfully they have at least two more years before they have to.

    3. I wouldn't pay him. I'd go get another cheap, good qb until I find a great qb.
