Mocking Blurred: 2023 San Francisco 49ers NFL Draft

No picks until late day 2 raises the degree of difficulty, and obscures the tea leaves. With that being said, here's my one and only attempt to predict what the 49ers will do come draft day. I decided to take advantage of the depth in the middle of this class by utilizing all available draft picks, while at the same time staying realistic as far as expectations of player availability.

3rd: # 99 Isaiah McQuire, Edge, Missouri

31 TFL in 35 games the last 3 seasons

3rd: #101 Byron Young, DL, Alabama

54 games of durability with experience up and down the defensive line who is a technician

3rd: #102 Marte Mapu, S, Sacramento St

The new Jimmy Ward swiss army defender

5th:# 155 Braeden Daniels, OT, Utah

5 position versatility and never missed a game in 4 years. Noticing a theme here?

5th:# 164 Cameron Latu, TE, Alabama

80% of his catches went for 1st downs or TD's
5th:# 173 Demario Douglas, WR, Liberty

Ray Ray's understudy
6th:# 216 Keaton Mitchell, RB, East Carolina

0 fumbles in 2022 with smooth cuts at high speed. Perhaps he makes the other 6th rounder, Mitchell trade bait by the deadline

7th:# 222 Antonio Mafi, OG, UCLA

56 games at at both L/R guard. Mauler who buries 'em. Banks diet candidate who will be a starter next year

7th:# 247 Mekhi Gardner, CB, LSU

Classic zone CB for Wilks zone heavy secondary
7th:# 253 Malik Cunningham, QB, Louisville

Practice squad candidate with generational potential if he ever gets it
7th:# 255 Ali Gaye, Edge, LSU

Wake up call for the oft injured, underdeveloped Gambian. Kris Kocurek is on the phone. Pick up the phone, Ali

  1. Nice work razor.

Interesting that you avoided a kicker - not a fan of the options? I could easily see them just wait for an UDFA as well.

    1. Thanks, Scooter. I didn't draft a kicker because Gould hasn't signed anywhere yet, they traded for one, and as you say, they can wait and sign an UFDA to bring in for competition.

Nice draft, Razor. Aside: Appreciate your comment about Mitchell. We can’t rely on him.

If the 9ers draft all the players on your list, I'd say JL and KS hit a home run.
I have Zach Harrison, EDGE Ohio State VS Isaiah McQuire, Edge, Missouri at draft pick #99, but I suspect both will be gone.

    1. Gonna be a dog fight for snaps on that defensive line.

    2. One less depth piece they need to get. Ferrell and Bryant replace Ebukam and Willis. Jackson hopefully steps up to replace Omenihu. Draft a guy to take Jackson's snaps from last year and hopefully replace Ferrell next year.

  6. 49ers had WRs Treadwell and Conley in for FA visits. Would be interested in getting Conley as a 4th WR. Treadwell could play the big slot they brought Reed in to be in 2020.

But makes me think they may not be too sure about Gray's development.

Just out of curiosity, in your opinion, what are the chances that Byron Young and Marte Mapu are still on the board in the 3Rd Rd when the 9ers draft?
Also, CB Cory Trice and WR Demario Douglas are IMO, 6Rd - 7Rd picks. Where do you list them on your draft board?
      * Lance Zierlein analysis of WR Douglas: Smallish slot receiver with adequate speed and quickness but inconsistent route running and ball skills. Douglas has late-round potential but his lack of size and history of muffed punts could work against him.

    2. George:

For what it's worth, Brugler predicts that both go 3rd-4th. About Douglas he says, "Overall, Douglas’ role at the next level will be limited by his lack of size, length and power, but his explosive urgency as a receiver and returner increases his chances of finding an NFL home."

      Delete
    3. I got them valuing McQuire over Young, but who knows for sure? Mapu should be available.
I've got a 5th round grade on Douglas, and Trice makes plays. Definitely a late day 2 prospect.
To me, Douglas is Ray Ray 2.0

    1. It's one of the reasons the Niners are fielding calls for Trey Lance.

      Delete
    2. Makes no sense to trade Lance now. Let him play while Purdy rehabs, and see how much improvment he's made.

      Delete
    3. No harm in listening to offers. If someone offers a 1 and change, would have to consider it.

      Delete
  11. I would remind everyone that's buying these, "sources", that Shanny gave a little lecture on the folly of doing that right after drafting Lance over Mac Jones.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Agreed. A lot of times it's just to create a talking point and part of it imo is that people have finally started to clue into the fact that this isn't a great class of QB's so are starting to look at other options teams can look at to get one.

      Delete
  12. Another question or two we need to ask ourselves, why are all these reports coming from national reporters and not beat reporters, and is Shanny willing to go into the season with Darnold as his starter and a rookie backup?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If the compensation is right I think Shanahan would be willing to do that.

      Delete
    2. They obviously feel comfortable with Purdy as their starter, and Shanny likes Darnold. So if someone is willing to give them back a lot of what they gave up for Lance, then yeah, I think they would make that deal.

      Delete
    3. That's 6 weeks with Darnold as your starter. A guy that's mentally broken, with a rookie behind him.

I wouldn't trade Lance for anything less than a 1st next year, and a high 2nd this year. If they do trade him, it won't be before June 1st, otherwise they'd have to add 11 mill in dead cap to the Dee Ford dead cap, and restructure another player. I think it makes much more sense to get a look at him in training camp and preseason games than to pull the trigger now for a 2nd round pick and change.

      Delete
    4. That's 6 weeks with Darnold as your starter. A guy that's mentally broken, with a rookie behind him.

Assuming Purdy starts the season on PUP which is almost a certainty.

      Delete
    5. I understand why teams would be calling the Niners but I don't think ShannyLynch would even consider trading Lance unless the offer started with a first round pick as Scooter said. I doubt anyone is willing to do that so Lance will probably get another season to show what he can do. I really hope he plays well during preseason and wins the job. Both because it helps his trade value and gives them an option to keep him long term.

      Delete
    6. They're not trading him. The best outcome is for Lance to ball out, win his job back and then the 49ers have a very good problem on their hands.

      Delete
    7. I agree Razor it seems to me that they need to find out what they have in Lance. However, if a "good" deal comes a long I think you got to take it. As far as Darnold being broken that may be so but something tells me he will be fixed properly. Alex Smith was broken to till the right situation came along (Harbaugh than the Chiefs).

As far as Lance balling out, eh that could happen and that would certainly be a good problem to have. I haven't seen any indication in his play so far to indicate that his value will increase. With two games into Purdy you could see he had the it factor, not definable but certainly visible. I want a winning and "healthy" QB I am not sure the Niners have that yet.

      Delete
  13. I suspect maybe Carthon would inquire...... I think the 49ers have a price where they would entertain a trade, I am hoping it includes 2 firsts....... I know I would, but I also don't believe anyone outside the building really knows what Lance is capable of. I do find it telling that the locker room was split last year between Trey and Jimmy. Personally, if they were to get a player and a 1 and an additional mid round pick, I would probably do it as I believe in Darnold and it would be an, "all-in" move to win now.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Trading Lance would be nuts! And could haunt Shanny and Lynch longterm imho.

  15. They should do a presser and confirming there faith in Trey cuz this story looks bad on them.

On Trey, I'm a fan of his and want him to succeed, but I believe his "window of opportunity" is closed. Imo, that's the basic issue. That's on the Niners, who drafted someone with such little experience in the position, and on Shanahan, who knew Trey needed as much experience as possible but made him part of the running game, which was incredibly stupid imo.

    1. George: I don't think they'll trade him, though, unless it's part of a deal for Rodgers, if that ever comes about.

  18. "Proof of Brock Purdy's popularity in the Bay Area was on display tonight at Oracle Park. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback received a standing ovation during the Giants' game against the New York Mets."

Lance and Donald are going to have to win the position by a wide margin if they get the job. That will be hard to do if Purdy resembles last year's performance.

    1. Purdy will miss all of training camp. If Lance is part of the reason the team is winning in September, Purdy will stay on the bench.

Let's hope Darnold never sees the field.

      Delete
    2. He has to earn it. I haven't seen anything that shows me that Lance is the man. Purdy demonstrated in two games that he was more than capable. I think the fan base is going to boo Lance off the field for mistakes if Purdy is not the QB and that would be mentally disastrous for Lance. Like I said Lance is going to have to bring his A+ game and if that's better than Purdy last year then so be it Lance will be great. I just haven't seen anything from Lance to indicate...

      Delete
    3. I honestly look at it as the 49ers have 3 QBs they should feel comfortable can take the team to the playoffs. Even Darnold. And I don't much care at this point which one ends up being the long term starter.

      Delete
    4. May the best man win.

I'd be surprised if Purdy doesn't miss at least the first 4 games, and like I said, if Lance is showing why he was Shanny's chosen one, Purdy won't get off the bench.

      Delete
  19. I agree Scooter- and I don't know which one will win the gig, but I suspect it will be Lance, but not by much over Darnold. That said, if they ARE fielding calls on Lance, I hope they don't settle for less than 2 1's or a starter-caliber player and a 1

    1. Fielding and making are two totally different things. No one is offering what it would take to get him.

      Delete
    2. I'm sure they are fielding calls - why wouldn't teams inquire? - but also sure they feel no burning desire to trade him. So it would take a good offer. I doubt it needs to be two 1s, but at least 1 1st and change.

And I agree with razor in that I doubt any team will be willing to offer enough.

  21. I am not a fan of McGuire as much as some others because I would prefer a speed rusher off the edge. That said, he really looks like someone that could fill the Omenihu, Arden Key role and SF doesnt have that right now... so I definitely understand that.

In terms of Lance, I just cant see them moving him during the draft. He would cost to much too move cap wise, you don't know when or if Purdy can return yet, and SF likely wouldn't get much back for him given how green he is, how oft injured he has been and the fact they would only get 2 years of team control to make a decision on him.

The biggest problem with the cap hit is the fact that while they could restructure another player to move him, they would still be against the cap after this. Then they would need to add another qb to get through camp to replace him (especially if Purdy suffers a setback) and SF wouldn't have the space to make a move should anyone get hurt.

    1. To me, Jackson fills the speed rusher role right now but I wouldn't mind taking advantage of the depth and double dipping at 3 positions; Edge/TE/CB.
