The 49ers are through to the second week of the playoffs after demolishing the Seahawks in the second half to win the game 41-23. The 49ers scored touchdowns on three consecutive drives to open the second half and came up with two big takeaways to blow the game wide open and secure the win.
This game was expected to be a blowout for the 49ers and the second half was certainly that. However, the game looked like it was going to be an arm wrestle in the first half, in particular the second quarter, where the Seahawks scored 17 points to lead the 49ers by one at the half. After two 3-and-outs by the 49ers defense to open the game, the team struggled to stop the Seahawks running game and had issues getting off the field on 3rd downs. The offense also helped keep the Seahawks in the game by failing to convert good drives into touchdowns, having to settle for three FGs and a lone TD on five drives in the half.
Brock Purdy looked uncomfortable in the first half, with a number of off target throws and poor reads. The offense was still able to get into scoring positions though courtesy of some excellent play calling and big plays from the skill positions. On defense, Kenneth Walker and DK Metcalf gave the 49ers all they could handle. In the end it was a case of the Seahawks playing their best football against a 49ers team that was a little out of sync, and in the end the 49ers should still have been ahead at the half if it wasn't for a very stupid late hit by Jimmie Ward on Geno Smith to allow a last second FG on the stroke of half time.
I'm not sure what Shanahan and the coaching staff said at half time, but I'm sure it wasn't complementary and whatever it was it certainly did the trick.
The second half saw a different Brock Purdy. Instead of the off target and jittery player we saw in the first half we got a player that was back to finding his open player in space and on time. We saw a player that had a tremendous feel in the pocket and ability to extend plays in a way that allowed him to find guys after a play had broken down. We saw a confident QB that took what could have been his worst performance as the 49ers starting QB and turned it into one of the more memorable. He finished the game with a stat line of 18/30 for 332 yards, 3 TDs (all in the second half) and just the one sack taken, as well as 4 runs for 16 yards and another TD on a QB sneak in the first half. He should have had a fourth passing TD at the end of the game after some incredible work to extend the play but Aiyuk was unable to hold on in the back corner of the end zone. To understand how good the second half was, he was 9/19 with no passing TDs in the first half.
The offense finished with 505 total yards and had 10 explosive plays on the day, including a 68 yard run by McCaffrey and a 74 yard catch and run by Deebo for a TD, both of which really showcased how well the 49ers block for each other.
The defense had their struggles, but in the second half they came up with two big turnovers that effectively sealed the game. The first turnover was from a strip-sack by Omenihu deep in the 49ers half where it looked like the Seahawks would at least cut the deficit to just 3 points. The 49ers turned that into another TD and a 14 point lead. The Seahawks then started to panic and came up with some drive killing penalties on the next drive, giving the 49ers the ball back cheaply. When most people would have expected Shanahan to start milking the clock he instead went for the jugular with back to back passes to Deebo, the second of which he turned into the 74 yard catch and run TD and a three score lead. The defense then put the game away on the first play of the Seahawks next drive as Lenoir came away with the INT.
This game really showcased how hard the 49ers offense is to defend when all the skill players are available and the QB is able to play efficient football as well as get the team out of bad situations. Excluding the final drive to end the game, the 49ers had nine possessions and scored on eight of them (4 TDs and 4 FGs). The three TDs to start the second half put significant scoreboard pressure on the Seahawks and forced them into errors which sealed the game. With Brock Purdy at QB we are finally seeing a 49ers team where it is the offense that is winning the games rather than needing the defense to do all the heavy lifting, though the defense has done a good job of being opportunistic in the second half of the year to seal the deal. We are also finally seeing what Shanahan's offense can look like when he has a QB that he trusts to throw the ball when teams are setting themselves to stop the run.
Moving forward, hopefully the nerves we saw from Purdy in the first half are now out of his system after getting this game under his belt and the performance he put on in the second half. The defense also has some kinks to work out, though it is unlikely we see Charvarius Ward play as poorly as he did today again this season. More concerning was the inability to stop the run effectively in the first half and the struggles on third down, both of which are areas the team has generally performed well this season.
Now we wait to see who the 49ers play next week!
I think the entire team was too overamped in the first half.
ReplyDeleteGonna be nice getting 8 days of rest and practice to get better.
ReplyDeleteSeven if Vikes win, no?
DeleteThat was some comeback by Lawrence and the Jags. Overcame 4 INTs and a 27-0 deficit in the first half. Staley has to be on the hot seat.
ReplyDeleteThat OC Lombardi has not done Herbert and the offense any favors.
DeleteWilson terrorized us for a decade and now we have our own playmaker back there!!!
ReplyDeleteWatching the highlights and I see I misremembered the order of the TDs - Purdy's QB sneak was the first TD of the 2nd half, not the opening TD.
ReplyDeleteI always thought Nick Bosa was a little emotionless...you know... we never see him fired up.
ReplyDeleteBut after seeing Joey Bosa's tantrums yesterday, I'm glad we got the better Bosa. Both in terms of Production and Temperament.
Forever thankful to Kliff Kingsbury!
👍
DeletePurdy does have one really bad habit and it could cost the Niners a game and it's an easy fix. When he runs, he doesn't protect the ball.
ReplyDeleteRight.....also when he scrambles out of the pocket, his tendency is to go left....small things and I'm sure the kid will improve on this, just like getting better at QB sneaks.
DeleteHe's just running away from McGlinchey towards Williams -- can we blame him? Just kiddin' 😁
DeleteMcGlinchey has lots of receipts and Lenoir wrote Geno back!
DeleteHope The Glinch returns on a modest contract. Every team needs a CEO-type like him. Bet he's hired a CPA to keep those receipts, Razor!
DeleteLamar Jackson 10-yard split: 1.54
ReplyDeleteBrock Purdy 10-yard split: 1.55

ReplyDeletePurdy's scramble in the 4th quarter to hit Aiyuk with a perfect pass in the corner of the endzone is something I don't think I'll ever forget. As Jack noted in his blog this morning, "Saying this play was reminiscent of Patrick Mahomes would be an understatement." There's no doubt in my mind now that he's our "qb of the future." Forget about signing Brady.
For those of you who want to watch that play again, cut and paste this link:

If Aiyuk catches that pass the play would be on repeat for years.
DeleteYep, very similar play to the catch.
DeleteMany Niners discards on playoff teams. G-men have two on the field (Brieda and James). Daboll's done an excellent job -- playing Harbaugh to Joe Judge's Singletary.
ReplyDeleteThe Giants are the sort of team I hope the 49ers don't have to play. Dexter Lawrence would be a huge problem and they play a type of offense (plus have a mobile QB) that can make life tough on any defense. The Vikings on the other hand... really don't scare me.
DeleteWhich is why I am rooting for Minn......
DeleteI'd prefer to have Niners play Giants at home than Philly on the road for the Conference championship. Avenge the 2011-2012 loss.
DeleteFair point, Mood. For mine Eagles are the biggest threat. But Giants would be tough too.
DeleteVikings are the worst 13 win team ever. Frauds.
ReplyDeleteThey really are.
DeleteI was watching the game with a bunch of Vikings fans. Felt real good when Cousins threw for 3 yards on 4th and 8, with the game on the line. :)
DeleteGiants will prove to be a handful though. Daboll is a heck of a coach and so far he is making chicken soup with chicken #@&!
Thank you Giants for giving the Niners an extra day of rest.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's a good thing. I would prefer Dallas.
DeleteInteresting animation

I will be rooting for the Cowboys tonight. Niners already have played the Buc's and beat the heck out of them. IMO to be the best you have to beat the best and the Cowboys are the better than the Buc's. Another reason it will be fun to watch the Niners once again end the Cowboys season. As far as the Eagles/Giants game, bring on the Giants we have some unfinished business with them.
ReplyDeleteNeither team particularly worries me. But I think I would prefer the Bucs.
DeleteBoth teams going backwards a total of -8 yards between both teams with three possessions total so far that took less than four minutes.
ReplyDeleteThe 49ers are 18-19-1 all-time against the Cowboys.
ReplyDeleteThe NFC East was no joke this season.
ReplyDeleteIt is 49ers vs the rest of the NFC East in the Div round.
DeleteNiners playoff record against the Cowboys is 5-3 favoring the Cowboys.

ReplyDeleteAs an aside, the video of Purdy's 4th quarter scramble already has over 400,000 views.

I think this in itself is amazing.
Mooney Ward was a Cowboy before they traded him to KC for OL.
ReplyDelete49ers vs Cowboys will pit the #1 defense by DVOA against the #2.
ReplyDeleteBrock Purdy is doing exceptionally well for a rookie.
ReplyDeleteIMO another rookie who doesn't get talked about nearly enough is Spencer Burford. He was on point with his blocking all game. Bodes well for Oline next year.
Yep, Burford has done pretty well all year. Razor has said it before - RT next year.
DeleteAdd a couple more compensatory 3rd rounders to the kitty. Ran Carthon being hired as Titans GM.

The 49ers could have the Coach of the Year, the Defensive Player of the Year, and the Rookie of the Year.
George:
DeleteObvious question: Can a guy win Rookie of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year too???
Purdy isn't one of the finalists for ROTY.
DeleteThe 49ers have a positive turnover differential in 9 straight games. That's the longest streak in 1 season since the 2000 Ravens did it in 11 straight games ending in the Super Bowl win.
ReplyDeleteTrey Lance, what the hell are you thinking - geez
ReplyDeleteThe Cowboys draw referee Bill Vinovich for their game with the 49ers. Vinovich assessed 70 fewer penalties this season for 835 fewer yards than the top penalty crew (Carl Cheffers).
ReplyDeleteExpect a few holding calls to be let go on Bosa this week...
DeleteConversely, McGlinchey should practice some tactical holding moves in anticipation of Parsons matching up against him.
DeleteExcited about this game. As far as I am concerned, the only match up better than a Niners-Cowboy Divisional game is a Niners-Cowboy Conference Championship game...

Delete49ers with Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle, Kyle Juszczyk all on field averaged 15.35 yards per play vs Seahawks in Wild Card win
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/doug_clawson/status/1615448246687522830
I believe the average is 9 yards per play for the all the games with this unit.
When CMC, Juice, Kittle, Ayuk, and Samuel were on the field together last week they gained 15.4 yards per play against the Seahawks:
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/doug_clawson/status/1615448246687522830
I read elsewhere that the Niners average over 9 yards per play with that combo averaged over all games. Just mind blowing.
This blog is surprisingly quiet for a Cowboys week :)
My post ^
DeleteLetting the Cowboys do all the talking.
DeleteMy hopes. Giants beat Eagles and Niners beat the Cowboys, then Niners beat the Giants. Going into the Super Bowl the Niners would of vanquished the Hawks, Cowboys and Giants, how sweet would that be.
ReplyDeleteIt will be the best offseason for me if it happens that way!
