Week 8 Matchup: San Francisco 49ers vs. LA Rams

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to your live blog for 49ers football. If the 49ers want to enter their bye with good vibes, they'll need their offense to play a complete game. They averaged 2.7 yards on the ground in their last matchup. The Rams rank 2nd in stopping the run, but with CMC in the fold and having fully digested the playbook, the outside zone run could start to heat up. I think it'd be interesting to take a couple plays from the '84 Niners playbook with CMC playing the Roger Craig role and Wilson the Wendell Tyler role, and get them both some swing passes out in the flat. I think the time is now to also get Gray the ball, whether that's a jet sweep or quick slant. There's an old saying, the devils in the details, and in order for the 49ers to get right with a win today, they'll need to be detail oriented.

  1. I believe it's going to be a Gray day in L A. With CMC the outside zone should be more effective. No fumbles, no interceptions, no penalties, defense has to be relentless from the opening whistle to the final gun. KS when it's the fourth quarter you need to become ruthless, take no prisoners, mentality. Don't play not to lose, play to win and win big.

    1. Get Donald running sideline to sideline, and wear them out. That's been the blueprint.

  2. WHO WILL WIN TODAY, THE RAMS OR 9ERS?
The answer is obvious....Winning the turnover battle is key for the 9ers. Since the start of 2021 the 49ers are 14-3 when they win or tie the turnover battle. When they turn the ball over more than their opponent the Niners are 1-9.
The offense has made a habit out of hurting itself with mistakes! they're tied for the fifth most penalties in the NFL, have the second highest percentage of dropped passes, are tied for the second most lost fumbles, and the ninth highest interception percentage.
If the 9ers are going to beat the Rams, THAT NEEDS TO CHANGE!
4 quarters of error free football and a heavy dose of McCaffrey and
    Wilson should give the 9ers a W.....

  3. No Deebo or Greenlaw is a big blow. However, I think the underrated absence will be Juszczyk who will affect the run game.

    Advantage Rams.

Head says Rams, but heart says Niners. Too close to call.

  4. Just because Niners have won 7 out of the last 8 meetings does not mean they will win today.

On paper Niners should win. But the way the key players have either played inconsistently (or are too banged up) does not inspire confidence in me. Add to that the coaches inability to get them ready mentally.

Some key Rams' players are back starting with their center Allen. Then Van Jefferson is back. Niners need CB play, like that of Troy Vincent at his prime, to counter the Van Go route plays.

Niners should pull out a close one today, but I don't expect this D line to dominate their O line (Rams' replacement LT has been reasonably good and may have replaced Noteboom permanently). A lot is on the shoulders of CMac.

    1. All he really has to do is replace Deebo's production, and that's what he was brought here to do. Wilson and TDP aren't OZ backs.

    2. There's only so much of the playbook and scheme CMac can assimilate in 10 days. More important, his lack of familiarity with the players on offense (exactly how the blocks are set up by individual players at game speed) will limit speed of execution. Especially in this game, where there is no fresh scheming, it's all about execution. Asking him to replace Deebo is bit of a tall order, IMO. We'll see -- maybe he will surprise me.

  6. Just listened to Dontae Whitner rip the defense for rookie mistakes made by veterans. For example, he stated that defending the bunch WR concept is a day one install for the defense, yet the veteran backs failed to communicate and allowed a 20 yard run and catch by the Chiefs. I’ve always liked Whitner because he doesn’t hold back.

    1. Yup, I really like his digging into the X's and O's. I learn about the game listening to him.

  7. Also, on offense, Whitner blames poor player execution and discipline for poor performance of the offense and not KS' play calling.

  8. Wonder if we will see the pony package with Wilson in the backfield and CMac split to the side. Maybe with 22 personnel. Someone mentioned it on radio, perhaps Greg Cossell.

  9. How long before McVay tests out the Niners' D with a jet sweep?

  10. Great, now Mooney is down as Rams rev up their screen game... ugh!

  11. Can this defense put up any resistance. I'm starting to change my opinion of Ryans.

    1. Yep. The Rams have pretty much given up on the run, but Ryans happy to proceed with his game plan.

    1. Probably from first (the first 5 games) to near last since then (inc. this game so far).

    2. Is Ryans going to adjust for the screen or what?

  13. McGlinchey is a damn turnstile. Could a replacement be any worse?

  14. KS and offense will nred to earn their money. Cannot rely on Def right now. We brought KS coz of the offense.

  15. More mistakes. Wasting a beautiful run by CMC.

    1. Yep, but this would have been worse by now if Ramsey can catch

  17. Stafford picking this def appart right now... blitz or not

  18. Wow! A rare stop by our Def. Lets go Ofense

  19. Lol... i will.just check down to CMC all day!

  20. We are so fortunate that.we have not turn the ball over yet...

  21. Great play from JG and good catch from CMC!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Okay defense...how about it. The offense got a lead can you hold it?

    ReplyDelete
  23. CMC giving me a scare with those 2 fumbles. But a great catch in the end zone. I'm not that familiar with CMC, but I never heard that fumbling was a problem for him. Knowing his work ethic, he'll fix it.

  24. Do not get conservative KS, this is the time to break their hearts.

  25. @Mood:

I've seen your posts on CMC and while I knew he was good, I always kind of felt like you were a fan boy because he was at Stanford. But, wow, I don't think I've ever seen anyone do all of the things he can do. But since you know him well, should I be concerned about a propensity to fumble?

    1. He rarely fumbles - one of the lowest rates in the league. This is an aberration.

    3. In a word: no.

I have pretty much watched every snap he played in college. He is very sure-handed.

  26. I didn't get to watch the game, will watch the replay tonight.....looks like CMC is single handedly blowing up the Rams based on the box score! :) Nice going. Trade is already paying dividends and I'm glad to be wrong.

Time to pull the starters and rest/heal up!

    1. Yep, CMC putting up madden like numbers today. I think all of knows what CMC can bring to our offense but most worries about the trade coz of his health history. On the field, he is a monster!

  29. In the previous blog post, I commented: "To win, Niners will have to rely on CMac".

Kittle just said in the post-game interview on KNBR: "I've never been more open in my life".

CMac: is he the straw that stirs the offense, or is he the key that unlocks the offense? I'm running out of cliches.

    1. Yeah, if I had to choose between CMac and Deebo, I'd pick CMac. Fortunately, I don't have to choose. Wait until those two are on the field together.

      Delete
    2. CMC is half the cost of Deebo and will have a bigger impact on this offense.

      Delete
    3. Maybe this will lite a fire under Deebo. Competition always makes players better and now Deebo has major competition for best OW on the team.

    4. I think it was Tim Ryan who mentioned on KNBR that when he was on the practice field early this week with Lynch, Deebo strolled over with a big smile and thanked Lynch for the trade.

    1. Excellent end to RAMS' WEEK!

Ronnie Lott used to scream those two words as he used to enter the locker room on those Monday mornings during his Niners' domination of the Rams.

In his post-game interview on KNBR, Kittle mentioned that his wife wakes him up on the Monday morning of Rams; week with the same shout!

  31. Nice to see Ryans make adjustments in the 2nd half. First time in a long time that I've seen both sides of the ball play well in the 2nd half.

  32. Let's just pray CMC stays healthy the rest of the year. Incredible weapon. That is saying a lot when you have Kittle and Deebo in the same team!
