Week 7 Matchup: Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to your live blog. Today's matchup is an opportunity for the 49ers to get some new shoes after shooting themselves in the feet last week against an inferior Atlanta Falcons team. I have a sneaking suspicion Andy Reid's game plan could involve running the football more with Pacheco. He's a tough running back and Givens/Ridgeway will need to perform much better if they want to shut him down. This game should go down to the wire if the 49ers play mistake free ball. Go Niners!

*According to Jay Glazer, McCaffrey will get 20 carries, and maybe more depending on game situation.

    49ers’ CMC offer: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th
    Rams’ CMC offer: 2nd, 3rd, 5th

LA couldn’t match SF’s 4th rounder because they had traded it away for another RB, Sony Michel, in 2021

    1. Hopefully CMC gets the running game explosive once again.

    2. Under, I think he scores on this Spagnuolo defense.

Mood, some one needs to hold McVay accountable.

    3. Don't think that Snead would making these bets by himself. I think it's primarily Kroenke who's pushing the chips to the center. He wants an attractive product on the field in the early seasons of the new stadium so it's full. Probably doesn't care if half the stadium is filled with opponents' fans. McVay is okay with these moves since he has the safety valve of a TV gig if things go downhill in future seasons.

    1. I propose Ryans should double team Kelce and put Jimmy Ward on their best receiver.

    2. Fred will play an especially key role in the middle today. Diante Lee had a great article on him in the Athletic this week -- how Fred's role is defining modern NFL D.

  4. I don't like the CMC move, but I understand the All-in mentality. Hopefully it pays out in the short-term and I'm wrong.

This game is a true test for our D against one of the best offenses and Playcaller/QB combos in the game. Hopefully our D is up to it.

    Go Niners: 31-28!

    1. My prediction is the CMC move will grow on you. I think he'll be the next Ricky Watters in this offense.

I like that score prediction, and you've been as good as they come so far.

  5. Why not have CMC in the lineup on that 3rd down after the way he has been running? I don't get that at all.

  10. Good to see the offense moving the ball pretty well in this one, but gotta finish drives vs the Chiefs. And that INT in the red zone can't happen.

Defense is, predictably, struggling to slow down the Chiefs offense. But the worrying aspect is how little pressure they are putting on Mahomes. Need to lift the pass rush pressure to get a few stops in the 2nd half.

  11. Our offense has not been good in the 2nd half. Hopefully Jimmy is done with his one-bone-headed-move-per-game and will get on with it.

Treat the 2nd half as a brand new game. Run the ball with Wilson Jr. He was getting good penetration.

  12. DL getting owned today. And STs... so much for the big improvements.

  13. Looks like Andy Reid came to make a point.

  14. Good they are able to keep generating point scoring drives, but FGs aren't going to get this done.

  15. Another 3rd and long given up by the #1 defense in the NFL. Uggh.

  16. They know that a screen is coming and still can't defend it. D is just does not have that combination of speed, skill and smarts to play this offense.

  20. Defense is just getting cooked today. Giving up waaaaay too many big plays. Starts with DL getting owned, but backend has been poor too.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ryans and the defense totally embarrassed today. Maybe this will be the kick in the *ss they need to live up to their supposed #1 billing.

    ReplyDelete
  22. All three phases need to get back to work.

    ReplyDelete
  23. This game is showing what a wide gulf there is between the Chiefs Coaching and 49ers coaching. With a far better roster and D, we are losing by 3 scores at home and getting embarrassed on national TV.

Look no further than Giants to see what real coaching looks like. This isn't it.

We can't hang with Chiefs/Bills with this cast of characters. All we are good for is to beat up the Rams/Panthers.

Now I will tell you what will happen....next week we will beat up the Rams and everyone will say that we are superbowl bound/We are .500 etc....and this team will not have any accountability.

    Same crap different day.

  28. Ricardo posted that the team is now 0-25 when going into the 4th quarter down by 7 points or more. Any reasonable person, who isn't invested in KS like we are, would question how could of a HC KS is. Nobody in their right mind would think he is an elite coach if they saw that stat.

  29. The two big plays were JG interception at the end of the first half and the runback on the second half opening kickoff. Lots of mistakes at critical moments on offense and defense. O line played the way I expected them to play at the beginning of the season not very good. Did the Niners field a defense today? Once again, another total team loss.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Is another total team loss always just attributable to the players? At what point do we start questioning the coaching and getting the team prepared for the game.

    3. Trench warfare has to get better.

Today was the most yards per play allowed by the 49ers defense since Kyle Shanahan/John Lynch took over in 2017, by *a ton*:

      1. vs Kansas City, 2022: 9.1
      2. at Green Bay, 2018: 7.4
      3. vs Dallas, 2017: 7.2

  30. You can flip Reid/Mahommes with KS/JG and the Reid/Mahomnes led team still win big today!

  31. The 49ers blowout loss to the Chiefs on Sunday featured an obscure piece of NFL history. Quarterback Brock Purdy entered the game late for San Francisco and completed his first pass – a 20-yard strike to wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud. The completion was the first ever by a player picked last in the NFL draft.

    1. Giving up 40 is not playing lights out.

An elite defense should play lights out against bad teams (Chi, Den, Sea, Carolina, Atl)...and against good/great teams it should be able to not get burnt on every drive.

      3rd and 20 and they give up a 1st.

Ward just lets a dude run right pass him.

      Defense was shit.

    2. The offense plays more like shit than the defense so i give our defense a pass.

  35. How important is Armstead to Niners' D?
    Jordan Elliot noted in NN:
"In the three games Armstead has played this season, the 49ers have allowed 64 rushing yards per game. In the games Armstead has missed that number has nearly doubled to 111.25 yards per game."

      -- 27 offensive penalties, 9th most
      -- 23 defensive penalties, T-9th most

    2. I didn't really expect to win this game and at half time I thought I would be writing about how the team hung tough but let too many opportunities slip.

But that second half... tbh I am almost glad it happened. It would have been easy to gloss over the defeat if it was close. But this team hasn't been good this season and they need the wake up call.

      Delete
    3. I didn't really expect to win either in fact I was impressed that they hung with them till the fourth quarter.

Penalties are ridiculous and seem to come at the most inopportune time.

  38. "Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (seven), tight end George Kittle (six) and wide receiver Deebo Samuel (five) all hauled in five-or-more receptions for the second-consecutive week, marking the first time since 2009 that a trio of 49ers each registered five-or-more receptions in back-to-back weeks when running back Frank Gore. wide receiver Josh Morgan and tight end Vernon Davis accomplished the feat."

  39. "Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo completed 25-of-37 attempts for 303 yards and two touchdowns. With 303 yards on the day, Garoppolo threw for 300-or-more yards in a single game for the 11th time in his career and first since 1/9/22 vs. the Los Angeles Rams (316 yards)."

Not bad numbers but that lone interception just changed the game.

    1. It really didn't.

The INT netted no points for KC.

KC turned the ball over twice and the Niners got 7 pts off the INT.

What changed the game was the defense not getting off the field. KC had 10 drives, 1 was an int, 1 was a missed FG, 1 was the game ender, and 1 punt. 5 other were TDs. Not getting a punt until 3 and half minutes left in the game is horrible. Giving up 5 TDs is horrible. Giving up a 34 yards on a 3rd and 20 screen, awful. Giving up 57 yards on 3rd and 11 from the KC 19, awful. If they held on both of those the worst that happens is 3 pts. 3rd and 6 and they give up a 45 yard TD to JJS, dude devolved into a 4th WR in Pitt and he owned the SF defense.

What also sucked was the ST, on both kicks and returns. Opened the 2nd half allowing a 48 yard return AND an unnecessary roughness on Jennings...3 plays later a TD, game over. But not to be outdone McCloud decides to be a "hero" and instead of just taking a touchback he tries to return the ball, get a good return but only because of holding, instead of taking the TB and starting the drive at the 25, its instead at the 5, offsides on KC, ball at 10, run up the middle loss of 1 ball at 9, sack given up ball at 5, Williams whiffs, safety. Had RR just taken the TB, as he was 7 yards deep in the endzone when he started his return, he instead tried to be a hero, it fails and the drive ends in a safety. IF YOU'RE CATCHING THE KICK OFF IN THE ENDZONE DONT RETURN IT!!

Defense and ST failed this team.

    2. Agree fully. The offense played a decent game despite poor O line play, not great but good enough to be competitive. If the D played at the average level it had played in the first 5 games and ST just managed not to screw up, Niners would have been very close all the way to the end -- perhaps could have even won the game.

      Delete
    3. Niners seemed to letdown after the interception. It's not that the Chiefs didn't score on the interception it's the fact that the Niners didn't score. The rest of what you say I totally agree with.

      Delete
    4. The offense moved the ball pretty well most of the game, but they have to be better at finishing drives if they hope to beat a team like the Chiefs. The difference in this game was one team finished all of their scoring drives with TDs, the other only 40% of their scoring drives.

    2. Regarding Banks, I was pretty confident that he would pan out eventually after I learned last season that Foerster had banged the table to have him drafted and had devoted significant effort during the season to have Banks make up for any decline in his technique and strength during COVID. Shanahan and Foerster had independently stated that Banks was ready to start late last season at right guard but they did not want to change the working lineup after it had started to gel.
