BREAKING NEWS

Adam Schefter
Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers agreed to a restructured one-year contract that will keep the QB in San Francisco this season, per sources. The contract contains no-trade and no-tag clauses, assuring Garoppolo will remain in SF this season and have the freedom to leave in 2023.

    1. You were pounding the drum on that one, eMJay. But correct me if I'm wrong, you didn't say anything about a restructuring. Weren't you assuming they would keep him at full salary? Of course the other argument for letting JG go was because it is Lance's team now. Or does this move it might not be quite yet.

    2. I was thinking either at salary or extended-restructure, never figured he'd outright take a pay cut. But seeing as how he has a no-tag and no-trade, or better yet right to refuse, was enough for him to take a pay cut so that his deal this year is more manageable (and tradeable) and since it is now more tradeable he controls where he could be traded to, it makes sense for him to take the restructure.

I also have to say this is a smart move so as to avoid a repeat of 2018 (or even 2020). This team is ready to win now, you can't put the season and 52 other guys on the line with a dude who's played some 15 games sine high school. If Trey gets injured (he's already had some) or falters, they have a dude who can come in and lead this team to the promise land. Kyle does not want another losing non-playoff season.

  2. Garoppolo gets a fully guaranteed salary of $6.5 million, with various incentives that could push his compensation up to $16 million if he were to get significant playing time.

    1. Nobody will trade for Sudfeld and his guaranteed money.

What will be interesting to see though is what they do at QB. Is JG actually ready to be the backup - where is he at in his rehab and how long before he is back up to speed with the offense? Do they need to now keep 3 QBs on the active roster, at least to start the year?

      Delete
    2. If not I expect he's released soon.

    3. Sudfeld is probably the odd man out. Probably be released.

      Delete
    4. Its really do they go with 2 or 3 qbs to start the year? If its 3 then Sudfeld is 3rd and Purdy is practice squad.

      Delete
    5. True, but they could always keep Purdy on the PS, not sure about Sudfield.

They also just got 20M in cap space haha

    6. From last to 5th in cap room is just another positive aspect of the deal.

  4. This will be spun as being a great win for the 49ers. If Lance gets hurt and JG is able to come in and lead the team to the playoffs, then it probably is a win.

But I'll be honest, I see this as a bad thing. It is reported as JG being on backup money, but that contract is a bridge starting QB contract. They are paying him like a bridge to be the backup. The players will see that... and wonder. Now if Lance starts the season with some struggles there is a viable escape plan for the team... and a lot of players on the roster that like JG.

This is the sort of deal you make if you don't have full confidence in your starting QB.

And the funny part of it is, there is probably a part of making this deal that is about the 49ers just wanting to keep JG away from other teams (say, the Seahawks). Create potential discord among the playing group just so a rival doesn't get a player you want to move on from.

    I don't like this move.

    3. Seriously, if Lance can't deal with one of the nicest guys as his backup, next to Alex, then he's not mentally tough enough to be the starter of this team.

Dudes got a job to do.

The competition didn't hurt Montana or Young, or the rest of the team.

      Delete
    4. I agree with that but its not about Lance's feelings. It's about the rest of the team. Up until today the team knew it was Lance or bust. Now they see JG back, on a deal that pays him roughly the same as the starter with potential to make more. If Lance struggles will they rally behind him... or look to the guy that has done it before?

      Delete
    5. The rest of the team is focused on their job. This gives them the best chance to win, thats it.

  6. I think when viewing it as you should and that's a business, the 49ers were able to, 1st Upgrade the quarterback room, 2nd Keep him away from Seattle, and 3rd secure a 3rd round compensatory pick; all for $6.5 million. Shrewd....

  8. And you guys probably thought I was exaggerating when I said Kyle Shanahan had ZERO common sense! Well, there goes the locker room, which means ultimately means there goes the season!

WHAT AN UTTER EMBARRESMENT FROM TOP TO BOTTOM!

I have nothing left to say about my team this year, other than that I am devastated to see another potential Super Bowl year wasted, only this time the repercussions at the QB position, and the debacle of Trey Lance, and all of the wasted draft capitol, may be felt for years to come!

And of course we need to recognize now, the "train wreck" that is the drafting of Trey Lance! Last year I said I feared that Kyle Shanahan would ruin Trey Lance's development, and now it's happening, and we are watching it happen in real time.

Now the only thing left for me to do is to remove my 49ers decal on my car, and change my user name on my pick'em football pool, and wait for the 49ers to start cleaning up the smoldering wreckage of this 2902/23 season, next offseason.

  9. Can JG potentially be traded this year (assuming he agrees) if say a starter on another team goes down? If so, with the new contract it would be much more appealing for a team to trade with the 49ers and perhaps give up a higher draft pick. If this is all true, then there's another positive to this move.

    1. 100%. No-trade clause just means he has to agree to the trade. Trade deadline in NFL is relatively early, so if a QB goes down with a season ending knee injury in week 1 or 2, Jimmy is sitting pretty but also will Niners want to trade him when they could be in the same exact boat the following week(s)??

At this point I think they just are going to wait out the year and get the comp pick and added 20M in cap space.

  10. The only person more embarrassed than the 49ers scouting department, is Jimmy Garoppolo. How embarrassing from Jimmy. I really never saw this happening because I never that Jimmy would do such a demeaning thing to his legacy.

I am assuming he's going to get traded by the deadline, but it ruins team chemistry, and makes Trey Lance look really bad in the meantime.

Why in the world did they trade all of those assets for trey Lance? That might have been the dumbest draft pick EVER! Jimmy Garoppolo absolute sucked for the majority of last season, and apparently the 49ers have no confidence that Trey Lance can be even as good as Jimmy Garoppolo.

What an embarrassment for Jimmy Garoppolo, and what an embarrassment for JL and Kyle Shanahan! This is 101 on how not to to draft and develop a QB in today's NFL.

This is also really unfortunate for Trey Lance, and unless he absolutely lights it up this year, his reputation has taken a major hit! One thing that is no longer up for debate, the 49ers had NO BUSINESS trading THREE FIRST ROUND PICKS for Trey Lance, and he looks bad publicly, and his confidence is probably now completely shot!

    2. As usual, some people just can't see the forest through the trees on these complex issues.

So okay Razoreater, I have a real doozie of a potential negative for you to consider, and it's called human nature!

Sure, as a purely financial move, the 49ers probably come out winners on this, BUT CONSIDER THIS FACT:

The 49ers now have a backup QB who is not only loved by a large portion of the locker room, and who a majority of players have already experienced a lot of success with, but WHO ALSO NOW HAS A DIRECT FINANCIAL INCENTIVE for his team's starting QB to fail!

Let me repeat that: THE 49ERS NOW HAVE A SITUATION WHERE THEIR BACKUP QB< WHO ALREADY HAS A HISTORY OF SUCCESS WITH A MAJORITY OF HIS 49ERS TEAMATES, HAS EVERY INCINTIVE IN THE WORLD FOR TREY LANCE TO FAIL! AND IN FACT THE SOONER TREY FAILS THE BETTER FOR JIMMY GAROPPOLO, BECAUSE OF THE WAY HIS CONTRACT IS CONSTRUCTED!

This is not like last year when it was still technically Jimmy's team, and Jimmy's $27M was guaranteed. This is not last year when Jimmy had to have assumed he could go somewhere else after the season and make just as much, if not more money, than he was currently making with the 49ers. So why in the world would Jimmy continue to mentor Lance now, and/or even play nice with the young kid, when he stands to benefit greatly from the young QB's failure. Not only does Jimmy have a financial incentive, but his legacy also stands to improve greatly if he takes over for Trey Lance and has more success this season.

The locker room chemistry is now a tinderbox - one spark, meaning perhaps another 2-4 start like we saw last season, or one short stretch of games where the offense struggles -one spark away from blowing up in Kyle and John's faces.

Oh, and look at this from Trey Lance's perspective. The OL in front of Trey is a major question mark to start the season, and Kyle's offenses have a history of slow starts because of the complexity and precision required, especially along the OL!

I'm told 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo discussed possibility of waiving no-trade clause later on if something develops league-wide that benefits both sides. But that's not a primary focus.

Garoppolo's flexibility helped. His value for S.F. teammates, chance to win weighed heavily.

    4. And as embarrassing as this is for JL and Kyle, how embarrassing is this for Jimmy if he remains the backup?

Trey Lance is making more money than Jimmy now, and Jimmy is his backup, so Jimmy is probably required to carry Trey's gear around the facility every week and keep Trey's cleats shiny and clean. Honestly, I am not sure there are many athletes who would demean themselves like this. Every weekend, on national TV, Jimmy is going to be holding the clipboard for the rawest starting QB in the league, lol! Think about that. Can you guys ever imagine Joe Montana holding the clipboard for Steve Young?

And why? Jimmy has made way too much money, and done too much for this organization, to demean himself like this. And it's also makes crystal clear how little value Jimmy currently has around the league.

Joe would never have done what Jimmy did, taking a pay cut to be Steve's backup. NEVER, EVER, EVER! Why, because Joe Montana had something Jimmy doesn't - something called "PERSONAL PRIDE"! Jimmy Garoppolo is clearly missing this quality which explains why he never improved at QB for the 49ers in 5 full seasons, and never kept himself in good enough physical shape to keep himself healthy. In fact, he had such little pride in his job, he made a habit of going awol for 7 full weeks after signing his big contract with the 49ers after the 2017 season, and apparently goes awol every year during the offseason!

  12. I find it interesting that this move has been received with an almost overwhelmingly positive response.

If they wanted JG as the starter they never would have drafted Lance. If they wanted JG as the backup, they should have had him training with the team at least. All offseason the 49ers have made it clear they wanted to move JG. What changed?

Sure, easy to say it is because they didn't get any offers, and easy to drink the cool-aid about not wanting to let a starter go for nothing, but if this was something the team wanted or was happy with as a potential solution then they shouldn't have ostrecised JG during camp.

Making this move now is just really really strange. I get the stuff about SB windows, etc. But man, making a last minute decision to retain your old starter who hasn't even been given the playbook before now... this doesn't sound planned and is not the move you make if you trust your starter.

Imo this is a really concerning development for the team, and for the progress of Lance.

    1. Of course, there is the possibility it is simply a short term solution prior to a trade being worked out. If that is the case, annoying that something couldn't be worked out earlier, and hopefully doesn't cost them a player they would otherwise want to keep, but it would make sense.

    3. That's not exactly what I'm seeing Scooter, and even though the majority of that has been relatively positive, that's all going to change rather quickly, just as soon as trey lance has a couple bad games, or the 49ers fall behind in the division.

See, a lot of people are strictly looking at this purely from a financial standpoint, and the upgrade at backup QB. Most people aren't really looking any deeper. But once people realize how potentially decisive this could be, and how negatively it's likely to affect Trey Lance's development, it will be a different story. But unfortunately a lot of damage to trey Lance's reputation, has already been done!

There is a reason team's don't do this kind of thing. There is a reason team's jettison the previous starting QB once they make a move to move on, and invest in a change at QB! I don't know how much more evidence you need than that.

3 more things on the @49ers' deal with Jimmy Garoppolo.

      1) Team communicated with both QBs for the last few days on this.

      2) A clear part of that was a commitment to Trey Lance as starter.

      3) A key: This deal does NOT happen unless Garoppolo takes less in base 💰 than Lance.

    5. It's a risk, Scooter. A lot of posters are saying if Lance isn't tough enough for this scenario, then maybe he's not the future of the team. On the other hand, he is a young man and they did give up a lot to get him. There is some argument, I think, to saying now is not the time to test Lance in that way. Nevertheless, I think the move is good and I also think they still want to trade JG. They're now in a better position to do so if an opportunity arises.

      Delete
    6. And your right Scooter_McG, I don't see any way of interpreting this as anything other than a real lack of confidence in Trey Lance. This is actually the opposite of a vote of confidence in the 2nd year player, and I am not sure people realize just how poorly this reflects on the Trey Lance draft pick. That's a real shame, IMO. And I feel bad about this for Trey.

Let me reiterate - the 49ERS SPENT THHREE 1st ROUND PICKS ON TREY LANCE! Why spend an unprecedented amount of draft capitol on a QB who isn't good enough after a full years worth of development to replace the QB you've been actively trying to replace for YEARS?

This is a really bad look for everyone involved:

      - It's a bad look for Trey Lance
      - It's a bad look for JL, Kyle Shanahan, and the 49ers scouting department
      - It's a bad look in terms of salary cap management, as Jimmy becomes the most expensive backup QB in the league
      - It's a a really bad look for Jimmy Garoppolo, who obviously wasn't in any kind of demand as a potential starter even at a below average starting caliber salary, despite the narrative about him being some kind of "winner"

And on the last point, I wholly agree with this because a teams W-L record is just that, a TEAM statistic. W-L record should be very lowly weighted as a statistic when evaluating a QB. It's a team sport. When people evaluate a RB, a TE, a WR, or really any other position, they don't look at the team's W-L record, do they? Of course not. That's ludicrous!

    2. I was planning to come and check the site out to see how things were going anyway but this news gave me a good reason. 49 bad takes is still kicking around and making bad arguments I see. As usual the truth is opposite to his opinion.

There is no downside to this. To those who say this is bad for Lance's confidence or it will cause problems in the locker room, you need to understand that this is a business involving grown men. If bringing JG back as the backup is going to demoralize Lance's confidence then he's not the future here and it's better to find out now rather than later. The locker room is full of high character leaders who won't let this cause a problem either. Give the players and Coaches a little credit for being professionals instead of just assuming everyone reacts like they are 12.

Personally, I don't see Lance crumbling over this. I think it will motivate him to work even harder and for the rest of the team it shows the 49ers are not willing to gas a season simply because they want to walk the high wire with a rookie who hasn't played a lot of football. This team is ready to compete for a SB now. You don't put yourself in a position to waste a year simply to appease the young guy or fans who don't like Garoppolo. You do what you have to do to put the best roster together and there can be no argument that this is a better roster with Sudfield as the backup.

The 49ers just got the best of both worlds: a great backup at the most important position on the team and the cap space that was really the only thing stopping a reunion from happening in the first place. This was a great move by the 49ers because this is the type of move you make with a team that is ready to win now.

Hope everybody is doing well and looking forward to the season starting in a couple of weeks!

That same hubris probably helped them keep Deebo Samuel on the team after his trade request, but it could be their undoing here. Dealing with a disgruntled wide receiver is far different than having to navigate a schism in the locker room due to a quarterback controversy. Kyle Shanahan supposedly stopped using Trey Lance in the red zone last year because a group of veterans came to him and said he was undercutting Jimmy Garoppolo’s leadership of the team. So what’s he going to do if the 49ers struggle and that same group of veterans demands that Jimmy Garoppolo become the starter? There’s a reason VANITY is Al Pacino’s favorite sin."

For some reason, even though the 49ers traded a massive package to move up and draft Lance, they never came to terms with how mediocre of a quarterback Garoppolo is. It’s the reason they refused to hand the keys to Lance last season. Unwilling to let go of a player they evaluate so highly, the Niners opted to keep Garoppolo in San Francisco."

  25. This will be Trey Lance's undoing. The last thing a young QB who is attempting to win over the locker room and fanbase needs is the to hear the message that was sent loud and clear by the 49ers organization, and Kyle Shanahan, by holding onto Jimmy despite the fact that they claimed they had every intention in the world to move on from the veteran QB.

People can try to convince themselves all they want that this decision says nothing about Trey Lance, and people try to convince themselves that this decision will have no bearing on locker room chemistry, but those people would be fooling themselves.

Anyone who understands the phycological make up of these dedicated athletes who sacrifice a lot, and who risk potential career-ending injuries every time the take the football field, would understand just how potentially decisive this decision may end up being. To think that these professional athletes, who for many of them, their earning potential and livelihoods are directly affected by the success or failure of their current team, would understand that these players won't simply keep their opinions to themselves if the team get's off to another slow start this season, because that's not the way human nature works. And anyone who think Trey Lance wont be affected by having Jimmy lurking over his shoulder, worried about losing his team every time he makes a poor read, or misses an open receiver, you know, the typical growing pains that is part of the normal developmental process, is foolish, and incredibly misinformed!

This season just got a whole tougher for the 49ers, based on this one, simple - yet incredibly complex decision not to move on from the one QB whom they've been trying to move on from for two years, and giving Trey Lance an open runway to be himself, and just play the game of football without looking over his shoulder on every play!

JL and Kyle Shanahan may think they've improved their team by holding onto Jimmy at a bargain price, but they've actually done the opposite, and you guys will all understand the ramifications of this incredibly shortsighted decision soon enough.

Meanwhile, all you have to do is turn on the TV to see that Trey Lance, whom the 49ers bet the future on last April, is now considered a BUST by the national media, and the kid never really had a chance because Kyle Shanahan undermined him at every turn. You may think Trey is strong willed enough to handle the abuse, and being labeled a bust, but you will soon find out that human nature doesn't work like that.

    What a shame!

  26. Hyder seems to have made it at the expense of Turay. Tackle/edge versatility, I presume.

  27. I see Reasons has unleashed his inner Kraken, scouring the web for like-minded know nothings.

This is the best of all possible worlds. Lynch unleashed a big middle finger to those bottomfeeders figuring they'd snap up JG once he was released. If a trade happens, now that Jimmy has passed physicals and has manageable contract, Niners hold all the cards (as does Jimmy, he has veto) - "we don't come to you, you come to us", teams have to meet the ask. If no trade develops, Niners have the best QB room in the league. Lots of cap room for FA shopping, whats not to like except for the crybabies?

As far as Trey looking over his shoulder? He's made it to the big show, he needs to do is produce. If the team started 0-4 they'd probably be looking into the backup no matter who was in the room. I'd rather have Jimmy out there than Suds.

    1. The talent of this team is getting them to 2-2 in the first 4. Its what happens next is what keeps Jimmy on the sideline or not. And even then they should be 4 - 4 at the bye at the very least, wins over Chi, Sea, Panthers, Atl...loses to Den, LA, KC, SD. I believe they should beat Den and LA (esp since its in Levis).

The likelihood that Jimmy plays in the first 8 is almost non-existent, just based off the rest of the team vs the opponents quality.

I really only see JG playing if Lance gets hurt or if the Trey just isn't showing it but they are still winning in-spite of him. Thats it. Even with Trey I feel this team could be 5-3 or 6=2 at the break, is KC as potent without Hill?, is SD going to finally become what everyone says they've been the last 5 years (yet always fall short)?, is Den going to be good with RW?, will the Niners still dominate LA and will LA have a SB hangover?.

And yeah, Lesions is doing just what got him kicked off before. Sad....for him

Give him h-ll, ribico! An obnoxious, egomaniacal sc-mbag. Speaks down to everyone. Even worse, he treats this blog like his toilet. Really can't stand him.

  28. He Lesions...you know how much value you should put in reporters and bloggers opinions...SQUADOOOSH!! NADA!!

These jabronis, 99% of them never laced up cleats at any level, are worth as far as you can throw them.

Just because you are cherry-picking quotes does not change diddly.

I'm sorry but this team has been to the NFC Championship 2 out of the last 3 season, and had it not been for Jimmy missing 10 games, Deebo missing 9, Mostert missing 8, Kittle missing 8, Bosa missing 14 and a handful of other starters missing multiple games the 2020 season would have been another great run. I take what they know a hell of a lot more than some schlubs on Twitter.

Stop it, you're spamming the board and its idiotic.
