Deebo Got His Bag

The #49ers and star weapon Deebo Samuel worked for months and get it done. He lands a huge deal — 3 year extension worth $73.5M max and $71.55M total. The guarantee is $58.1M. He’ll be 29 years old entering the last year of his deal with the potential for another massive one.

  1. Three year extension makes a lot of sense for Deebo, so not surprised this is how it ended up. I imagine it will be structured very similarly to Metcalf's deal.

    1. So, the 3 years starts next year, right (2023)? If so and we include this year in determining the average it's around $19 million per year ($4 mil this year + $72 mil the next three years)/4 years. Is this approximately correct?

      Delete
    2. Yes. It extends the end of his deal. His cap hit for this year will probably be around 6 to 7m, with a huge deadcap, and a big chunk of his guaranteed is signing bonus. 2023 is the first year on the new deal and the deal will be structured so that the team could cut him after the 2nd year of the deal, DKs is the same where is cap hit goes from 24 to 29M but his dead cap drops from 13 to 11M, team saves 18M if they let DK go after the 2nd year of the deal.

Both DK and Deebo are probably assured to be on both teams for 3 more seasons then depending on how they perform can either be extended again or released, but even a 28m cap hit in 2025 will seem relatively small seeing as how the cap is growing (save for the covid years).

    3. I'll be surprised if Deebo's fully guaranteed money isn't more than both Metcalf's and Brown's. Should find out by Thursday or Friday.

      Delete
    4. Cubus, that is correct. He is now on a 4 year deal.

Expect there to be voidable years as well to push cap hits over extra years.

      Delete
    5. The "voidable" year will be after 2024, same as with both DK and AJ.

Deebo's deadcap in 2025 is just 9m, 2M better than DK and 6M better than AJ's, even tho AJ also has a 2026 year as well. Niners again proving they are Kings of the Cap.

      Delete
    6. Of course the voidable year will be after 2024. It will be at the end of his four year contract. It is a non-salaried year (or years) tacked on at the end that voids after the last salaried year of the contract, to allow them to spread the signing/ option bonus out further.

    1. Hopefully the collective fanbase will not get all caught up in any noise next off-season if Bosa unfollows the niners and demands a trade.

All that stress for absolutely nothing. Dude was getting the same amount either way, his agent should have told him to just sit tight. They played their hand and it did nothing, makes them look bad.

      Delete
    2. I'd be very surprised if Bosa ever pulled a stunt like that.

      Delete
    3. Deebo going public with it early on, scrubbing his social media accounts and frankly acting a little childish, doesn't seem to be Nick Bosa's style. But I could see a hold out next summer if he isn't feeling whatever offer the Marathe makes him.

I am curious to read the nitty-gritty of Deebo's new deal when the specifics become public. Knowing Paraag, this contract is probably fair, but also somewhat team friendly as well.

Breaking: D.O. Sue L. Robinson is expected to announce her decision regarding QB DeShaun Watson tomorrow (Mon, 8/1). The NFLPA just announced that the will not be appealing the ruling, and have stated that the NFL should not use their CBA right to appeal to Goodell if they don't like the Watson ruling. This feels to me like the NFLPA expects a moderate suspension, which is what I had predicted.

My official prediction is a 6-8 game suspension, but I wouldn't be shocked if it was less.

Anyone else care to make a prediction?

    4. Thing is, Razor, these young guys listen to their agents/handlers/lawyers. They might not want to go this route, but if the "handlers" tell them this is the way business is done, they'll probably do it. Besides, let's face it, fans get pissed when this happens, but it is short lived especially if the player plays well after the deal is done.

      Delete
    5. Bosa will command 15% of the salary cap when it's all said and done. That will give them a 3 year window assuming they extend Lance after year 4. By then, Bosa's contract should look more reasonable thanks to the projected cap explosion.

  3. A 3 year extension, completed before the pads go on Monday - safe to say we were all over this one on INSPIRED 49ERS! This completes a very important contract negotiation, and one where the 49ers handled a semi-disgruntled star player in textbook fashion, so props to JL, KS, PM for getting this done!

And good for Deebo! Of the 4 premier 4th-year WR's who inked new deals this offseason (A.J Brown, Terry McLaurin, D.K. Metcalf, & Deebo) average annual value ranked third of the four receivers, as his $23.85 million-per-year is lower than D.K. Metcalf's $24 million-per-year and A.J. Brown's $25 million-per-year.

However, in the most important metric, guaranteed money, Samuel ranked second amongst the bunch, as his $58.1 million guaranteed ranked just behind Metcalf's $58.2 million guaranteed.

Samuel's signing bonus and guaranteed-at-signing numbers are currently unknown. Currently, Samuel's average annual value of $23.85 million and $58.1 million guaranteed both rank ninth amongst receivers in the NFL.

Now that they have their most dynamic playmaker rejoining the team on the field, expect the 49ers offense to start catching up to their championship caliber defense, starting tomorrow!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Dks cap hit went from 4.5m to 8.8M for 2022. Expect Deebos to be relatively the same, 4.8 to 7/8M.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I keep seeing people say the first year of Deebo's new deal will be next year. As a simplifying way of explaining it I guess its not far off, but its also not accurate.

His existing deal will be torn up as soon as he signs the new one. His new deal will be a 4 year deal - adding 3 years to the one he had left. The ~$72M being reported will be the "new" money, or additional money on top of what he was already owed.

But it is all part of his new contract. The new contract doesn't start next year, it starts now. And while his cap hit will no doubt be kept low this year, he will receive a large chunk of his money this year (signing bonus).

As cubus outlined, he is now on a 4 year deal worth around $19M per year.

    1. To put it another way, Deebo's new deal is not that dissimilar to Christian Kirk's in terms of length and value, though no doubt structured differently.

      Delete
    2. Very well explained, Scooter_McG.

This seems like a place where they were always going to eventually end up at, on or around July 31st, and I can't imagine the difference between a 3 year and 4 year extension being the issue that kind of derailed things early on, so I am guessing that the 49ers initially came in with a lower guaranteed number, and may have been looking to load Deebo's contract up with more performance/per game incentives, and that may have been where they got off on the wrong foot, but that's purely speculation.

      Delete
    3. By the way, I do think I was right about the difference between a 3 year, and 4 year extension as being one of the hurdles, but I can't be certain. But I can be certain about another one of my predictions - DeShaun Watson's suspension. I can't take all of the credit because I have a close acquaintance who follows the NFL obsessively, lol. And he's the guy who turned me onto Jason Hurley of 49erscap.com - the (un)official site for the San Francisco 49ers salary cap.

    1. Seriously, makes you wonder if "media" just make up sh!t , the whole "he doesn't want to play RB" crap we heard. Truly makes you wonder where this came from and why everyone regurgitates it. Dude made his name with his physicality, he enjoys it, he loves owning the Rams with it, so why now would it be a problem?

      Delete
    2. Yes, there are a lot of "media" folks, and especially "social media" folks, who are trying to make a name for themselves and absolutely make stuff up. No question about that!

Deebo's versatility is what makes him so special. He's a great pure WR, but what truly sets him apart, and has made him such a superstar, is his duel-threat ability, because it's all about getting the ball into his hands however you can, and let him do his thing. He's the biggest skill-player threat with the ball in his hands, in the NFL.

But, having said that, I do think Kyle might have taken it a little too far with all of the runs between the tackles. I know it was out of necessity due to injuries, but do I think Deebo would like the 49ers to give him a less touches on plays designed to be run in between the hash marks, which is probably why they snatched up TDP in the 3rd round, making sure they got him before another team beat them to the punch. Plus - keep an eye on the undrafted kid out of GT - Jordan Mason.

      Delete
    3. He had 60 rushing attempts over 9 games, basically a little more than 6 attempts a game.

Most workhorse RBs would get 300+ attempts a season, he's fine.

      Delete
    4. Yah, like I said, I don't think it's the number of rushes that might have been an issue for Deebo. Clearly with the incentives in his new deal, he's happy to be involved in the rushing attack. I think it's those extra-punishing power type runs, in between the tackles and right into the teeth of DL (330 lbs DL's), that he probably has a problem with.

I know I sure would if I were him. No matter what kind of methodology used, it is a fact that wide receivers careers last significantly longer than running backs, and especially RB's who make a living in the trenches.

  13. This is upsetting me now: According to multiple reports, Trey Lance was under pressure on 12 of his 15 drop backs today, the first day with pads, of training camp. According to multiple people who were on hand today, the main takeaway was constant, near instantaneous QB pressure, and Lance's ability to scramble around and make the most of it. What the heck?

I know, I know, it's still early, I get that, but I am really, truly getting concerned about the Center position. I don't quite understand how this wasn't the #1 offseason priority, with such a young, inexperienced QB taking the helm. It's the entire interior of the OL really. This is the most unsettled the OL has been during the Shanahan era, and I find that absolutely dumbfounding! Think of the OL as 2 sides tied together by the Center, who is also responsible for making all of the line calls. We saw the effects of poor Center play in 2020, and it basically broke the entire OL.

Hopefully the OL will come together at some point, but it's definitely my biggest concern right now.

Who was playing Center, Brunskill or Jake Brendel?

      Delete
    2. Yes, OL is definitely shaping up to be an area of concern through the early days of TC.

Hopefully as they get more reps together it gets better. And I suspect that in games, as teams focus on stopping the running game, the interior of the OL will have an easier time against the pass rush too.

      Delete
    3. OL is a concern but they're also matched up against a top defensive line and as TW said today, the defense knows the offense.

      Delete
    4. Brendel started with the first team reps, and Brunskill relieved him. Brunskill is really having trouble giving the QB's a nice clean snap, but both players are struggling in general, but I do recognize that they are going up against one of he top defensive units in the league, and it's not uncommon for offensive OL's to still be lagging behind the defense at this stage. And the OL, more than any other group, relies on synchronicity, especially in this scheme.

So, like Scooter_McG says, it's a concern, but there is certainly time for the interior to improve. It's good then that the Tackles appear very strong.

    6. Breaking News: Brandon Aiyuk and Fred Warner training camp BRAWL, and this wasn't just a kerfuffle or dust-up, from what I was told, this was an honest, two-round brawl, and it threw a pretty good sized wrench into today's practice.

It seems like this thing has been brewing for a while, and from what I've heard, the defense is getting a little cocky right now, because they are getting after the offense, and a big reason why the defense is dominating, is the interior of the OL continues to get whipped up front.

      Stay tuned!

      Delete
    7. If Sermon doesn't show he belongs on the roster they'll cut or trade him, no matter he was a 3rd round pick last year.

This staff has shown in the past they will take the best 53.

Good news for Sermon is that from all reports he has started camp very well, so it may all be moot.

      Delete
    8. OK, a little clarity on today's dust-up at camp:

Although Aiyuk and Warner squared up twice, both times they got broken up before many blows were thrown. And that's a good thing because according to David Lombardi, both guys had their helmets on both times they squared up. I never thought it was a good idea to throw punches when guys are wearing helmets. So, apparently even though both players were dead serious, as Lombardi did say this was the most intense dust-up he's seen at camp in his 6 years of attendance, nobody ended up with a silly, unnecessary injury. No harm, no foul, knock on wood!

      Delete
    9. Warner probably needs to back off a little bit. I like the intensity but let's take care of each other.

      Delete
    10. "If Sermon doesn't show he belongs on the roster they'll cut or trade him, no matter he was a 3rd round pick last year."

I agree with that. Of course, a 3rd round pick is always going to get the benefit over an undrafted player, especially in the first couple years, if it's at all close.

But like you said, Scooter_McG, it may be a moot point with Sermon because according to all of my sources of information, Trey Sermon has been the clear cut #2 RB so far this camp. Whatever he did this offseason, seems to be paying huge dividends because he looks stronger and much more explosive. He's also been decisive, and probably the most natural pass catcher out of the backfield.

Here are my current RB (halfbacks) rankings through camp (including 2 padded practices). Keep in mind, with the exception of Mitchell, these are penciled-in evaluations and until we see these guys in the preseason, it's too early to write these in ink:

#1) Elijah Mitchell: he's the clear cut top dog in the backfield, which is not a surprise.

#2) Trey Sermon: looks like a different guy. Big, strong, exceptional lateral agility for a guy his size, and a very natural pass catcher.

#3a) Jordan Mason: If RB's were valued like they were 10 years ago, the UFDA out of GT would have been drafted. Similar to TDP, he's another big, powerful RB with good burst and acceleration. If he has an edge on TDP it's his pass catching, that's why I have him ahead of TDP.

#3b) Tyrion Davis-Price: He looks like the guy I saw on tape - a no-nonsense downhill runner who can't be arm-tackled. Like Mason, he's another guy who shows good burst and acceleration, and both guys are strong in pass-protection. TDP is a guy who also showed really good vision in college, but his pass catching? Let's just say his pass catching is a work in progress.

#5) JaMycal Hasty: Hmm, I've always had a hard time evaluating Hasty. On one hand, he's strong for his size, and he's probably the closest thing they have to a "third-down" back, but even though he's pretty good in space, he doesn't seem to be a guy who creates much yardage on his own. He'll pickup the yards that were blocked for him, but I'm not sure that's enough to make the initial 53. He might be ticketed for the PS again to start the season.

#TBD: Jeff Wilson Jr: I'm not sure what's going on with Jeff Wilson Jr. He might not be 100% healthy right now, so I'm giving him a To-Be-Determined. We know who Wilson Jr is when he's right physically - he's a guy who runs super hard. You know those cartoon characters where their legs are running faster than their bodies?

Note: One interesting RB development in camp so far pertains to FB Kyle Juszczyk. He has been running a lot of routes out of the slot so far this camp. I hope we see a lot more of this because he's too good of a receiver not to take advantage of that, and I could see a scenario where both Juice, and TE Jordan Mathews (who got hurt yesterday, but I like his chances of making the roster if he doesn't miss much time) find significant snaps in the slot this season.

      Delete
    11. Also, Juszczyk and Mathews in the slot might also support my early guess that the 49ers just might only carry 5 WR's on the initial 53 this year (Deebo, Aiyuk, Jennings, McCloud, Grey). Although, I do really like the OkSt Cowboy - WR Tay Martin!

Jack Hammer today on Burford and it's promising:

Burford has been at right guard with the starters for every snap this offseason. On Tuesday the rookie offensive lineman stood out during one-on-one drills with the defensive lineman.

Burford won both matchups with veteran Charles Omenihu and matchups against Kevin Givens and Robert Nkemdiche. Burford demonstrated good patience to stay on balance before striking the pass rusher. Burford looks like the 49ers best interior offensive lineman through the first six training camp practices.

    1. Can John Lynch do what he did in 2017, only for a Center instead of a Guard? He traded for Laken Tomlinson on the last day of August, and all he gave up in return was I believe a 2019 5th round pick. Laken almost instantaneously solidified the interior of the OL, and he also became their most reliable offensive lineman. Finding a starting Center is even trickier though, so we'll see. Hopefully Brendel improves with reps, but even if he does, Brusnskill is not an NFL Center. He's a serviceable Swing Tackle and borderline OG. Unfortunately West doesn't look nearly strong enough right now, so who does that leave? Poe or Zakelj.

My guy - Matt Barrows - is really impressed with Jason Poe, especially today, and it's the one offensive position where his short stature could be a plus, as long as he quick and nimble, which he is apparently.

I can't wait to put together my list of players to keep an eye on August 12th. The 49ers don't have a lot of positions up for grabs, but they do have a whole bunch of talented players who can provide high quality depth.

    4. I am a little concerned as well, Scooter_McG. I did however get a first hand report that Lance mostly looked really good yesterday, making a lot of really good decisions and moving exceptionally well. I also heard that Kyle isn't giving him a lot of layups, and Lance is really pushing the ball downfield.

My biggest concern to be honest, is the throwing motion. I still find it concerning. I would say that it certainly does look a little more compact than it did last year, but I've also become obsessive with reviewing videos frame by frame, and I am 99% sure of what I am seeing, and to me, it doesn't seem consistent. To be fair, I am working with limited views from camp video, but unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, it doesn't look like Trey is repeating the same motion consistently. What I want to see is, unless there is a reason to change the arm slot to get a throw off, I want to see a QB repeat his throwing motion like a carbon copy. That's how you become deadly accurate. I don't think Trey does that. It looks like his throwing motion is all over the place. On one throw it will look kind of normal, and the very next throw it looks like more of a side arm slot, and I don't quite know what to make of that if I am being honest.

      Delete
    5. Are you guys seeing the same thing, by chance?

      Delete
    6. By the way, I don't want to sound overly alarmed either. I think Trey does a lot of stuff very well, and he has qualities that I believe will enhance this offense. Jimmy was accurate on the short stuff, quick release and all of that, but he didn't even take shots downfield, and very few throws outside the numbers, so he constricted the offense. The fact that Trey is comfortable attacking the intermediate and deeper, while also attacking the boundary , I believe that, along with his mobility, will enhance the running game. I just see a lot of room for improvement in terms of his throwing mechanics, and wonder why that wasn't a bigger focus this offseason. Maybe it was, and he's still working through it. We'll see.

      Delete
    7. I'd be concerned if I was Pittsburg:

Forget long scoring drives. In a training-camp simulation, Mitch Trubisky is having trouble directing the offense into the end zone given four plays from 2 yards out.

Trubisky, the free-agent signee, has taken first-team quarterback reps throughout every portion of every practice of Pittsburgh Steelers camp so far. During the traditional practice-opening 2-point conversion simulation known as seven shots, he hasn’t thrown a successful pass into the end zone since the first day the drill was staged.

The offense did not score on any of Trubisky’s four reps Tuesday, extending his streak of unsuccessful throws in seven shots to 14. Though Trubisky has completed two passes in that time — including a shovel pass to tight end Kevin Rader on Tuesday — neither made it into the end zone. The only successful seven shots snap Trubisky has directed since last Thursday was when Najee Harris ran the ball during one of the four reps Monday.

Trubisky also had a failed scramble last Thursday, the day after the first seven shots of camp. That first day, the offense scored on three of Trubisky’s four snaps.

      • Trubisky’s struggles extend beyond seven shots. On Tuesday, a late 11-on-11 practice period had Trubisky go 0 for 4 with an interception (by Damontae Kazee) and what would have been a sack. The final 7-on-7 period featured three short passes at or near the line of scrimmage to tight ends or running backs (only one was completed), although one Trubisky rep of that period was a zipped-in ball delivered to Cody White over the middle. But that might have been Trubisky’s only quality throw all practice.

    8. I'm not worried about Lance's throwing motion. I'm not even necessarily worried about Lance. I'm worried about the team being able to move the ball consistently if they don't find a way to lift their completion rate from what we are seeing currently.

That isn't all on Lance. It's on the whole offense.

    9. OK, good. That actually makes me feel better. I might be leaning a little too critical of Lance's throwing motion, so it's good to have multiple opinions on that.

So of you had to list your biggest concern, what would it be? Is it just whatever is causing the low completion rate?

Because I do think that's probably a combination of a number of different factors. One thing I know for sure and that is Trey Lance is really airing out. I keep going back to Fred Warne's talk with Trey last year about being too conservative. Obviously the OL is still a work in progress so hopefully they get settled down and the passing game starts looking more efficient.

And dang it, hopefully no more injuries, knock on wood. I'll catch you guys on Friday.

    10. Scooter, sounds like TDP is the answer to your question about who beside Samuel has the speed to turn the corner on the oz.

    11. The OL is really concerning me and I think is a key contributor to the low completion %. I think Lance also needs to learn to get rid of the ball quicker - though that is a bit of a catch-22 as I also think camp should be about willing to take a few more risks to learn your boundaries. There needs to be a balance there.

    12. Razor, I'll believe TDP has the speed to consistently get the edge when I see it.

    13. Cohn says he seen it:

Exploded around the left end for a 10-yard gain during 11 on 11s. Davis-Price is the fastest running back on the team and the only player other than Deebo Samuel who can get to the edge on running plays.

    14. Consider me sceptical until I see it in games.

    15. Hey, I heard Jackson beat Williams on an inside counter move. Man, if he can be a force, Bosa will break Aldon's sack record.

    16. If Jackson can be good as a rookie that will be huge.

  19. Am I the only one who thinks cruising around on scooters might not be the safest way to get around the 49ers facility? What happens if you accidently run up the back of somebody's leg, or get your own lower leg/ankle caught up underneath the scooter? Come on Kyle, This is football camp, not some yuppy silicon valley startup company.

    1. This QB stat seems oddly out of place. Not only that, do we even know how this "efficiency" ranking is even quantified? All I know is that Jimmy is now healthy, fully cleared to practice without limitations, and he is still without a team. This fact seems fairly easy to quantify, and much more relevant than whatever this random, out of context, efficiency-when-trailing-in-the-2nd-half ranking is all about.

Do you remember the days of Brian Hoyer? Jimmy stood us in good stead for a few years, and I thank him for allowing me to take my head out of the oven.

  21. Well, so much for my Jordan Mathews prediction. Dang it! I don 't know if you guys heard, but his season ended on Monday - torn ACL! Gosh darn it! Tough break. I'm shutting it down for the night on that note. So frustrating!

  22. JUST MY TWO CENTS WORTH.....
    * The 9er D looks to be, if not the best, one of the best D’s in the NFL.
    * Lance's needs to work on improving his accuracy! But IMO, many of the incomplete passes are drops by the WR’s and the number of drops is exaggerated a bit! That needs to improve before the season
    starts.
    * My main concern is the O-Line, primarily Center and RT. IMO, neither Brendel or Brunskill are capable and RT McGlinchey is coming off a quad injury and reportedly back down to 290 pounds. As we know, the last time his weight was that low he resembled a blocking sled the D pushed around. Not a shut down RT….
    * Next Friday (08/12/2022), the 9ers play the Packers! We’ll get a better idea if the O-Line can protect Lance and open holes for the RB’s…..If not, it could be a long and wasted season!

    1. Shanny/Foerster think they're got the center question answered between Brendel and Brunskill, with Brendel having the inside track. He wants to see what happens when they get their asses kicked in a game before deciding between the two.

    * I've attended a couple of training camp practices, and IMO, neither Brendel or Brunskill are all that competent at center.
    * Not all of it is due to the Center, but Lance is under constant pressure,
    * Rookie RG Spencer Burford has impressed. He's improving with
every practice. IMO, If he continues to improve, he'll be the starting RG when the season starts.
    * I also see Aaron Banks improve with every practice, he just needs more reps to get used to playing LG again.
    * I haven't seen enough of McGlinchey to tell if he's 100% yet
    * We'll know a lot more, after the 9ers play the Packers next week!

    * Agreed! Like maybe if he could learn to hike the ball and at least get in the way of the defensive player rushing Lance?

    * Could Jimmy Garoppolo end up with the Rams?
    * The question has become more relevant as more information has emerged regarding starting QB Matthew Stafford‘s elbow. Reportedly a case of “bad tendinitis,” it’s a baseball issue — and the Rams seem to be flummoxed by the situation.

  27. Rams' McVay calls Stafford's elbow pain "abnormal" for a QB

Coach Sean McVay says Matthew Stafford's continuing elbow pain is unusual for a football player, and the Los Angeles Rams are trying to determine whether it will hamper their starting quarterback in the regular season.

Stafford has been throwing in individual drills and 7-on-7 setups while skipping the full-team portions of the defending Super Bowl champions' training camp practices at UC Irvine. Stafford had an unspecified injection in his elbow during the offseason, and he reported feeling ongoing pain in the joint last month after not doing any serious throwing in the Rams' offseason program.
