If there's a player not on this list you're ready to pound the table for by all means let's hear it. Go Niners!

  1. Isn't Jurgens a center? Or should I say his primary job is center.

    ReplyDelete
  2. There's two mighty midgeys I would bang the table for in the top 80 - Calvin Austin and Marcus Jones. Also think Bryan Cook should be a top 80 player, as well as Zach Tom.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Anyone reckon JG gets traded today? I'm putting it at 10% chance. More likely to happen ahead of day 3.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Most unlikely. Day 3 seems possible but I wouldn't bet anything substantial on it.

      Delete
  4. Scooter:
I agree with your 10% chance. But should it happen, who do you think would trade for JG, the Texans, the Panthers or who?
I'd also guess a 20% chance JG's traded on day three. If he's traded, it will be after he can throw, or a starting QB gets hurt.

    1. Texans and Panthers are the two main options in my mind.

    2. I'm a little surprised with the lack of movement from John Lynch. Either he is assured that he will get their target picks later or he may be currently working on something that will move him into a high 2nd rd pick. On a different note, the Jets are 'Kill'n it' in this draft. Happy for Selah.

    3. "I'm a little surprised with the lack of movement from John Lynch."

The 49ers are clearly looking at 2022 as a transition season, so it should be no surprise that there is zero sense of urgency in Santa Clara.

      Delete
    4. Yes, this seems to be the case so far. Perhaps the 49ers have received word from Mack that he will stick around for another season. But Oline still needs to be solidified given that Tomlison flew to the Jets. I really thought that Lynch would package some picks in order to get an earlier 2nd but it wasn 't the case. But the draft is still fairly young and there could be some moves in the making.

  5. Logan Hall DT Tampa Bay, No surprise. Bowles needed him and he's a good fit for his system.

  6. Packers lost Tae Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling... and drafted a MVS clone to replace them. Yikes.

    1. The fact that the Vikings facilitated the acquisition speaks volumes.

  7. Packers trade up for Watson, Lance's WR at North Dakota St. Somewhere Aaron Rodgers is smiling.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Maybe. I'm not so convinced he is going to be that great. Just seems like a direct replacement for MVS to me.

      Delete
    2. A lot of dropped passes which doesn't bode well at the next level where you could start hearing footsteps and seeing ghosts.

      Delete
  8. Titans take one of my favorites, McCreary, CB from Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Breece Hall to the Jets. I thought he would look amazing in Shanny's offense. LaFleur's offense is pretty close.

Zach Wilson getting some help this draft.

    1. Yea, I like what the Jets have done.

      Delete
    2. Did you know Hall is Craig's cousin?

      Delete
    3. I did indeed! Might be part of the reason I wanted him 😁

      Delete
    4. I didn't know. Great bloodlines.

      Delete
  10. Texans take Pitre, a Barrows favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  11. There goes Ebikete. Great pick by Falcons.

    ReplyDelete

    1. They keep trying to push the Willis pick, lol!

      Delete
  12. Falcons staying in Quinn form by taking Ebiketie.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Forte looking good. Bears take the CB Gordon.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Urgh. Seahawks are taking Boye Mafe. I like him.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Seattle took an OT that Bosa's going to abuse for years. Taking Mafe is a good pick. Loved him.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Seattle follows that up with Walker who some liked better than Hall. Good pick.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I actually prefer Walker's teammate Jalen Nailor... if not for the injuries.

      Delete
    2. Yes. Different position obviously, but I think he's the better talent.

      Delete
  17. Vikings trade up and take the CB Booth.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Giants looking for the next Deebo and take Robinson.

    1. Really good pick. I had a sneaky hope he would be there at 61

      Delete
  20. Ravens take Ojabo. Somewhere Baalke is fuming.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lions take Paschal, as expected the edge rushers are flying off the board.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hutch and Paschal... Lions getting talent with toughness and work ethic up front.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The Commander take Mathis and fortify their trenches.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Didn't think he'd last to 61, but I bet the 49ers were hoping he would!

      Delete
  25. Patriots make a move up for the speedster for Jones in Tyquan Thornton.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I never would have thought the two players the Patriots took had a chance of going as high as they did. We all know Bill's evaluation of WR's doesn't have the greatest track record.

    ReplyDelete
  27. There goes Jurgens. Parham looking good all of a sudden...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Eagles just took our center, Jurgens. Damn!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Maybe they think Brunskill is the man.

      Delete
    2. Maybe Mack will surprise us and return.

If the plan is Brunskill... big yikes.

      Delete
    3. I'd prefer Brunskill in his best role and that's as a utility off the bench, but there are some who believe he's the best after Williams.

      Delete
    4. I take it there is not another center worthy of the pick or would have a difficult time beating Brunskill out.

      Delete
    5. That's a safe assumption, Under.

      Delete
  29. Steelers know their WR's and take a good one in Pickens.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ballard gets Ryan a good one in the WR Pierce.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Chiefs get Moore help for Mahomes and the Sky's the limit.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Cardinals grab a nice TE in McBride.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Cowboys take a character concern in Sam Williams.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Bucs make a move up for Goedeke.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am a little confused, maybe somebody can clarify this for me?

The 49ers have 9 draft picks, and a loaded roster, and not only are they apparently content with standing pat and not making their 1st pick until #61, but am I right that John Lynch actually alluded to the possibility of trading back with their 1st pick of the draft?

I have to ask because I am a little perturbed that they made no attempt to move up and grab Cam Jurgens out of Nebraska, who was well within reach, and seems like the quintessential OC for Kyle's system.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe they like Fortner better?

      Delete
  36. I wonder if the 49ers are a little upset to see Ingram go at 59. They met with him... could have been a nice addition.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Bengals move on up for Taylor-Britt.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Drake Jackson for the 49ers. Adds nice depth at edge.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Cool Hand Lynch selects Drake Jackson, Edge, USC.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He's among the best in this class at bending and stressing OT's pass sets but he's got to figure out which weight he plays best at, plus he needs to get stronger to have the ability to convert speed to power.

      Delete
    2. I suspect they will get him to add a little bit of weight back on, to be around 260-265 lbs. Was 275lbs as a freshman when he looked his best, down to 250lbs as a sophomore/ junior.

Not surprised they went Jackson over Bonitto. Jackson has the sort of measurables they clearly seem to prefer, while also being a very good and explosive athlete for his size.

      Delete
    3. Scooter, Ford plays around 250 lbs. doesn't he? Maybe they prefer a little more heft.

      Delete
    4. Ford was around 255lbs.

I think they are moving away from smaller ends. A lot of the guys they have added in the last 2 years are on the bigger side. Ebukam and Turay are the two smallest, and they asked Ebukam to bulk up this offseason (apparently he is up to 260lbs now per his IG). Turay meanwhile has nice length and is around the 255 lbs range.

      Delete
  40. Drake Jackson was the plan at #61? Seriously? My uncle has a late 3rd, early 4th round grade for him. This seems like a very uninspiring pick, but the 49ers do have the best DL coach in the entire league, so at least there's that.

    Wow!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. OK, I'll trust Kocurek on this one. I'm assuming he pounded the table for Jackson, and it's hard to question his judgement. But I don't know about this one. Maybe his lackluster stats are more about system, than the player, although his athletic scores are hardly eye opening either.

      Delete
    2. However, the 49ers have too many DE's now, and I suspect Jackson's development will probably be see him buried behind guys like Hider this season, but then again, the 49ers are clearly punting on 2022, so maybe this kind of pick should have been expected.

      Delete
    3. Context matters a little on this one. He looked really good as a freshman at 275lbs. But then was asked to drop weight for a new system as a sophomore... and USC had some coaching staff issues going on.

      Delete
    4. Yes, I was looking at his wrong athletic score. I like this DE a lot, but he doesn't look like an instant contributor to me.

Upon further review, I do think this kid has very good potential, especially under Kocurek's tutelage! he's long and athletic, and he plays with good awareness.

He doesn't fill an immediate need, but he looks like he has something, so I would give this pick a solid B+!

      Delete
    5. And he also has a high motor, and plays the run with some gusto. He has potential to be a good starter, and if that's the case, this pick obviously turns into an A grade, right?

      Delete
    6. also, I do like the Niners philosophy in how they have built this defense. They will own the LOS defensively, and that's a proven formula for success. But at some point they need to spend some resources on the interior OL, like real soon!

      Delete
    7. IOL, S, WR, RB, ASAP!

      Delete
    8. Middlekauff's sources tell him D. Jackson has 1st round talent, but some character concerns. Then again, the kid is only 21, so I can work with that! GOOD PICK!

      Delete
  41. George here. From David Lombardi about Drake Jackson:

    Vertical leap: 36.5 inches (elite)
    Broad jump: 10-7 (elite)
    Shuttle: 4.28 (great)
    3-cone: 8.38 (great)

    1. He's basically Kocurek's hand picked guy.

      Delete
    2. Yep, good size and length, very good athlete, just needs coaching up.

      Delete
    3. That's 6 outta 8 first picks on the DL.

      Delete
  42. Baalke takes a good center in Fortner.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Seattle drafting OT's AFTER Wilson leaves, lmao.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Jeez, I hadn't realised Jackson was up to 273lbs at his pro day, when he also did his agility tests and tested in the 80th and above percentiles. Already added weight back on since his junior season.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I was checking out his back flips at that weight and then had to rub some ointment on my knees and ankles.

      Delete
    2. 😂 he's a really impressive athlete for his size. Needs to turn that weight into grown man muscle, and needs to work on technique, but he has the athletic traits you want.

      Delete
    3. If he can't make it under Kocurek and alongside Bosa, he won't make it anywhere.

      Delete
    4. I have a good feeling about this pick. Seems like this kid is oozing with potential. Now let's fill a position of need.

      Delete
    5. How about Nick Cross at #93? Seems like a need meets BPA situation! Or grab a RB?

      Delete
  45. Patriots take a nice little DB in Marcus Jones.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Cool Hand Lynch takes the RB Tyrion Davis-Price.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not at all who I expected them to take, but RB doesn't surprise me much.

      Delete
    2. Turner's fingerprints are all over this pick.

      Delete
    3. I know someone who does, Deebo.

      Delete
    4. Feels like either a redundant pick with, or a replacement pick for, Sermon last year.

      Delete
    5. He's a good addition for what they need as part of a rotation. Looks like Mitchell, Sermon and Davis-Price in a youth gone wild movement!

      Delete
    6. Would have preferred Brian Robinson, who just got taken.

      Delete
    7. Yea, Davis-Price wasn't on my radar. Maybe they plan on running more inside. He's a tough runner to bring down, and he's very good in pass pro.

      Delete
    8. I think you've hit the nail on the head re inside runs more. Use Lance for the outside stuff. But still think Robinson is the better back for that.

      Delete
  47. I wonder if they would have taken Parham if he was still on the board....

    ReplyDelete
  48. OK, now this pick is a headscratcher. I am not saying it's a bad pick per se, but wouldn't this kid have been there at the end of the 3rd round pick (Comp pick)?

Matt Corral to the Panthers according to my sources.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Bengals take Carter to beef up their IDL.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Colts move back into the 3rd round to take Cross.

    ReplyDelete
  51. And there goes Nick Cross! Gosh dang it!

OK, I've seen enough for the day. I'll catch you guys tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Commanders take the RB Robinson.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Niners go thru RB a lot. Cannot have enough IMO.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, except you need quality OL's to open up holes for the RB's. Even good RB's need OL's, and QB's require protection, more than anything else.

I will say this - Davis-Price looks the part. He's big, and fast, and nimble for a guy his size. But the problem is the 49ers almost certainly could have got him at #105, so that's a problem considering they have bigger needs.

      Delete
  54. I'm kind of angry. Why wouldn't the Niners take S Nick Cross, out of Maryland, @ #93 and Tyrion Davis-Price with their 3rd round comp pick (#105)?

Davis-Price better be an instant starter, that's for darn sure. Like, sharing carries with Mitchell, because otherwise this pick was a reach!

Not a single OL yet? Come on guys, figure it out already!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If the options were Davis-Price or Nick Cross, glad they took Davis-Price.

      Delete
    2. Cross bites hard on double moves.

      Delete
    3. Come on guys. There is a little something called "value" when it comes to the draft. Davis-Price was not a value pick at #93. Cross would have been better value, he fills a need (a speedy Safety), and he's much higher rated than Davis-Price. I'm not saying Davis-Price won't end up being a good player, but there's a reason guys like Elijah Mitchell was available in round 6 last year. Value matters.

      Delete
    4. Yeah, safety, the really high value position of the defense.

I wasn't a fan of Cross. Highly overrated imo.

      Delete
    5. Tony Pauline’s Scouting Report on Nick Cross:

Positives: Athletic safety prospect on the verge of developing a complete game. Quick flipping his hips in transition and displays solid ball skills in coverage. Stays with coverage assignments, stays on the receiver’s hip out of breaks, and has a closing burst to the action.

Takes proper angles, displays excellent range, and covers a lot of area on the field. Shows ability over the slot receiver. Explosive hitter who jars the ball free from opponents. Shows good hands for the interception.

Negatives: Must improve his backpedal. Average ball production the past two seasons.

Analysis: Cross is a nice-sized safety and a good athlete who comes with a large upside. He needs to fine-tune his game, but he has the tools to develop into a starter at the next level.

  56. 49ers set to end day 2 with the last pick in round 3...

    ReplyDelete
  57. Woah boy, there's the speed element at WR.

    ReplyDelete
  58. There's the speed. Cool Hand Lynch takes Danny Gray, 4.33 Forty.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Personally would have gone Calvin Austin, but Gray works well for me too.

      Delete
    2. Gray is a true 4.33 guy, not just a track guy. I love that pick, but man, I am scared to death about their OL depth. Anyways, this fills a need, and he's a true speedster who can take the top off of a defense, so good for them.

      Delete
  59. OK, Danny Gray, SMU. That works for me. Good fit along side Deebo, Aiyuk, Kittle, Jennings.

Speed kills! Now you are stretching the field! Good way to end the day.

I'll join you guys again tomorrow, if that's OK. Have a good night.

    ReplyDelete
  60. In the lead up to the draft the 49ers met a lot of edge, RBs and WRs, including all 3 guys they drafted. So really shouldn't be a surprise they went those positions and players today. They also met a lot of OL, but the guys they met with were often taken just ahead of the 49ers picks.

The 49ers also met with a lot of safeties, but the majority were very much day 3 guys.

Pretty sure OL and safety will be targets early day 3.

    ReplyDelete
  61. By the way, my initial feelings for the Niners' Day 2, in terms of a grade, is a SOLID B. I don't think the 49ers came close to knocking it out of the park today, because I question some of the value, as well as the fact that they are neglecting more glaring needs, but I do like the players they drafted, that's for sure. I need to dig a little deeper on Davis-Price, as this feels like a serious luxury pick at #93. But I do like these players, and I do like their fits. I am just really, really concerned about the interior of the OL, as well as CB depth. And those are two position, as we've seen, that can ruin even good teams. I think they absolutely MUST bring Verrett back now, and they need to find a starting caliber Nickle CB, a starting caliber Center, a rangy Safety, and they need to add depth at OG. I don't know how they will get this done, but we'll see.

    ReplyDelete
  62. One thing is now obvious. The 9ers must believes Mack is coming back and they believe in Brunskill and Banks at OG, although the depth chart shows McKivitz at LG? Anyone heard if there is a reason why?

    ReplyDelete

    1. You're welcome! See everyone tomorrow for the meat and potatoes of this draft.

  64. The NFL is a funny thing, with teams constantly evolving and moving with the times. Two decades ago we were coming through a period where big, bellcow RBs were all the rage and so defenses were built to clog the middle and DL/ LBs were big and strong to bring down those RBs with a head of steam. Some rule changes encouraged a trend over the past two decades towards the passing game, speed, and getting guys in space. As a result defenses have transitioned to being lighter and faster to keep up, with a lot of teams employing DEs as DTs, LBs as edge rushers and safeties as LBs.

Even on a year to year basis we see teams constantly looking to evolve, because stagnating allows opponents to catch up and plan for you.

When the 49ers took Lance last year I outlined how this could be the start of a transition for Shanahan's offense, away from primarily outside zone. The drafting of Banks and Sermon on day 2 seemed to back this up. Today, with the 49ers wanting to add another RB they decided to go for a big, bruising RB that runs with intent to run over you. Yes, he also has the speed to run away from defenders once he has a runway, but his greatest asset is the anger he runs with to break tackles. Very Deebo like, in many ways.

It makes me feel that Shanahan has been sensing an opportunity to transition to more size and power on offense these past two years, especially in the running game. Seeing the success of guys like Derrick Henry and Jonathan Taylor I'm sure is part of that, too.

    ReplyDelete
  65. One other thing, day 2 definitely felt like a BPA approach. You can argue as to whether you believe the players really were the best available, but given the positions they took (and didn't) it felt like the team was just letting the draft come to them and taking the guy they had highest on their board. As an approach I like it - exactly what a team that is already strong should be doing.
