No More Gore

Frank Gore is set to retire and he'll do it as a 49er. According to reports he'll be signing a one day contract, and then take a job in the front office. "We’re still trying to figure out when I’m going to do my one-day contract, to sign, do my retirement. I told Jed York that I always wanted to be a Niner, so we’re working on that right now, and then we’re going to also sit down with me and my agent to talk about me working in the front office. I love looking at talent, and I love evaluating talent, and I love ball. And they know that I know football players, what it’s supposed to take to be a football player.”

    1. You have to believe that the two years he missed in college due to blown out knees had a positive affect on his longevity in the NFL.

    2. He was the most damage coming out and yet had the most successful career out of all the Miami RB's.

    3. Yea, I believe they all admitted that Frank was the best out of that group of great backs even back then.

  2. Computer Vision shows that Mafe's burst (speed off the line of scrimmage) ranks in the top 20 of all edge rushers in the past eight draft classes. I wonder where Kris Kocurek has him on his list of guys.

    1. Mafe is the guy I would want after the top DEs. But I really doubt he lasts until the 49ers are in striking distance.

    2. Scooter, they've shown they're not afraid to move up and they do have the ammo even without counting on any draft picks from Jimmy G.

    3. I think Mafe goes late round 1/ early round 2. To move up from 61 would cost a fair bit. I doubt they will be content having just one or two day two selections this year.

    4. It's my contention that this draft should be about quality over quantity. They could offer the Jets at #38 their 3rd round pick, #93 plus Greenlaw or Al-Shaair.

    5. I agree they are unlikely to make 9 draft selections like they are currently slated, but my guess is they use day 3 picks to move up small increments to secure guys they want that fall within range.

Like last year, the draft will be about getting guys for thr future. They don't have any position they actually need a rookie to step in right away. Not even DE.

    6. True, I just hope they don't take Kocurek's talent for granted and keep giving him sirloin. Wouldn't hurt to give him another filet opposite Bosa.

    7. They gave him Bosa and Kinlaw, I think he'll be happy enough for now. And there should still be good value available towards the end of round 2.

I'm currently thinking of the guys I expect will be available around the end of round 2, Kingsley Enagbare should be the target. He isn't a super explosive athlete, but he's decent enough in that regard, has the length and strength Kocurek seems to like, and has excellent hands.

    8. Yea, Enagbare is a guy I definitely think will be there but I'm not convinced he can make a living off the edge. Then there's that hip surgery he had as well.

    9. I think he can be fine in this defensive scheme. He had the highest pass rush win rate of the edge class, winning based on his strength, length and hand usage.

    10. Don't you think Kocurek covets that first step explosion to pair with Bosa?

    11. Enagbare seems to get off the snap plenty fast enough to me on film.

    12. 1.67 10 yard split. I've studied him and don't remember him being the first guy off the snap, but he does make up for it with his length and short area quicks. I think he has success inside versus out. I guess I'm looking for more athleticism at the position opposite Bosa.

    13. I think the team does want a speed rush element, but as a designated pass rusher that plays a pretty small share of snaps. Ebukam is that guy currently.

On a down to down basis I think they want a bigger presence opposite Bosa.

Not sure which way they may go in the draft. My preference would just be to get a guy that is good and fits the system, no matter how they win.

    14. Ebukam 1.53 10 yard split.

Good point. I think they can get one of those at the end of round 2. It would be really fun to see Kocurek's list after the fact.

    15. Definitely!

Jordan Willis (1.57s) and Nick Bosa (1.62s) also had fast 10 yard splits, while Omenihu (1.71s) and Hyder (1.84s) were on the slower side. But one thing that is consistent is they have heavy hands. Same with Ebukam tbh. They all have that power to keep pushing the pocket.

    1. Yea, he'll be a fantastic scout for us. I imagine Bobby will enjoy having him on board.

  4. Scooter, what are your takes on the following edge players:

    Cameron Thomas
    DeAngelo Malone
    Alex Wright
    Dominque Robinson

    1. At #61 I'm leaning towards Wright over Enagbare. 1.53 10 yard split.

    2. Wright will be in my day 3 defensive prospects to know list.

I don't think he will be a day 2 pick, but I like him.

      Delete
    3. I do think Wright does possess day 2 traits that could push him up draft boards.

    4. I'm a big fan of Wright and Robinson. I think Robinson will go before Wright based on teams believing his upside is higher (in part because he is very much still learning the position).
