Incredible. Unbelievable. Amazing. Name the incredulous superlative and that describes the unlikely come from behind victory for the 49ers over the Packers in the Divisional Round.
Here's what stood out to me.
Defensive resolve. The 49ers were outplayed by the Packers for the majority of the game. Out muscled for large stretches of it. But despite producing one of their worst offensive performances since Kyle Shanahan has been in charge, the 49ers showed a steely resolve on defense that prevented the game from getting away from them and keep the game within one score at all times.
The defense was led by Arik Armstead and Fred Warner, who put in tremendous displays. Armstead continued his exceptional play during the second half of this season, recording another pair of sacks in this one, making it 5.5 sacks in his last three games (all of which were win or go home situations). He is proving to be a big game performer for the 49ers. Fred Warner was also everywhere in this one and made a number of big plays.
The defensive line was able to harass Rodgers just enough in this one to prevent him from keeping many drives alive, with the Packers only passing halfway four times all game. Impressively, the Packers were only able to come away with 10 points on those four drives.
The defensive performance was all the more remarkable given how easily the Packers moved the ball on their first two drives. They never looked troubled on the opening drive as Rodgers and Adams repeatedly hooked up, leading to a TD run for Dillon. On that second drive they were well on their way to another score, but a peanut punch by Warner turned the tide for the defense as they were able to force the fumble and get the ball back for the offense. The Packers would only pass halfway twice more on their remaining eight drives of the game, as the defense started taking Adams away and held up against the Packers run game.
One of the critical sequences of the game came during the second half on the Packers FG drive. The Packers offense had been sputtering for some time, but got going on that drive with some tough running and finding ways to get the ball to Adams. They got down to the San Francisco 5 yard line and looked like scoring a TD, but Armstead stepped up on third down to record his first sack of the game and keep the game within one score. In a close game like this one, that play was crucial to maintain striking distance and keep the pressure on the Packers.
Special teams were special. And for a change, in a good way. If it was the defense that kep the team in the game, it was the special teams that won it. The specialists were rock solid, and Robbie Gould was once again nails in the post season, despite the inclement weather. He kicked two FGs and an extra point, including the game winner as time expired from 45 yards.
But more importantly, the 49ers came up with some massive, game turning plays on special teams throughout the game. First, Jimmie Ward blocked a FG attempt at the end of the first half to keep it a one score game at the half. Then Deebo started the second half with a big kick return to set the 49ers up at halfway, which led to the 49ers first points.
But the real hero of the game was Jordan Willis, who knifed past the center on a punt deep in Packers territory with just under 5 minutes to go to block the punt, which was scooped up by Talanoa Hufanga for the game tying TD.
In a game where the offense repeatedly found ways to not score (more on that below) the contribution from the special teams was crucial to the win. And for one week at least Richard Hightower can feel good about his unit.
Offense was inept. As outlined above, the offense produced one of their worst performances under Kyle Shanahan, especially in the first half. In fact the first four drives were three and outs, three of which were ended by sacks on third down. The running game was going nowhere while the receivers were letting Jimmy G down by continually dropping passes or not getting open. The blocking was also sub-par in both the run and pass game, as the Packers defensive line consistently overwhelmed them at the line of scrimmage.
It wasn't until their last drive of the first half that the 49ers got moving on offense. And even that drive looked like it was going to stall quickly, until an exceptional one handed catch by Kittle on the sideline gave them their first first down of the game. The drive would get them all the way down to a first and goal, but a Trent Williams holding penalty would back them up then Jimmy G threw a very late pass while on the move to Kittle that was intercepted by Amos.
The second half started with more promise, as the 49ers drove down the field to start the half relying heavily on Deebo Samuel and got within the five yard line. However, Mitchell was penalised for a face mask which backed them up, then Aiyuk lined up incorrectly. In the end the 49ers had to settle for a FG.
After the Packers kicked a FG to extend their lead back to 7, the 49ers got going on offense again with a couple of nice runs and a big third down conversion to Kittle for 24 yards. However, the 49ers would eventually turn the ball over on downs after it looked like Elijah Mitchell made an error by cutting the ball back inside instead of following Trent Williams on the outside run on 4th and 1.
The offense found ways to shoot itself in the foot the entire game. But in the end the defense and special teams did enough to overcome those mistakes.
Big Picture. NFC Championship Game! After starting the season 2-4 then 3-5, who would have thought this team could make it to the NFCCG? It's a remarkable display of perseverance and self belief by the players and coaches to have made it this far. The team is far from perfect, but they play hard and play for each other, with just enough skill thrown in, and that combination can prove difficult to beat.
The 49ers will no doubt be sweating on a few injuries this week, as a number of players looked hobbled by the end of the game. Hopefully none of the injuries are serious and the players are able to recover in time for next week. Now we wait to see which team the 49ers will be facing.
Go 49ers!
SMH Special Teams SMH, they sucked all year long, who would of thought...Special teams lololololol
ReplyDelete"That's why they play the game" - Chris Berman
DeletePretty snappy on the write-up there Scooter! - I imagine you're pretty fired up like the rest of us.... Just wanted to put it out there for eveyrone to root for the Rams tomorrow so that Sofi would turn red for the NFC Championship game! - to include me being there......
ReplyDeletealso- w the game, I think Ryans will get more attention for a HC job... not sure what Giants do, and I think 49ers would be wise to keep Peters, but the compensatory picks would certainly help as the 49ers probably get a little top heavy with Deebo and Bosa signings, in addition to Kittle, Warner and Williams, and need to fill the gaps with depth.
ReplyDeleteI think I would rather keep Ryans at least one more year than get the extra 3rd rounders. But at least they would get something back if he does leave.
DeleteGiants already hired GM Joe Schoen who is from the Bills...so maybe one of the Bills coordinators get hired as Head coach of the Giants.
DeleteVikings are the real threat for the Demeco Ryans sweepstakes. If they have half a brain, they should hire Demeco after what his unit did today.
I am rooting for Tampa Bay.
ReplyDeleteRichard Hightower may have just saved his job thanks to a Packers special team unit that came into the game ranked worse than us.
ReplyDeleteThe one word that comes to mind when describing this team is resiliency. If they can pull off another win against Brady and the Buccaneers, they will have done something I'm not sure any of the other wild card Super Bowl winners have done. Beat every divisional winner.
On the road to boot. It's an unbelievable gauntlet.
DeleteIts been a pretty wild season for the 49ers, that's for sure.
DeleteNot sure who I would prefer out of Rams and Bucs. Obviously 49ers have the wood on the Rams recently, but that will change at some point. And they know the 49ers very well (and vice versa). Bucs on the other hand are pretty beat up atm... but have Brady.
Tbh... I don't think I really care who they play. Just getting to the NFCCG is awesome, and I think they have a shot against either team!
I think Bucs are possibly weaker due to the injuries, but Sofi would be almost like a home game for the 49ers as Sofi would probably be 65+% 49ers fans.....
DeleteNice summary Scooter! Jordan Willis...what a game. Didn't even think he will suit up today after a high-ankle sprain.
ReplyDeleteAnd what about Dontae Johnson? This guy is all heart...keeps showing up every time the team needs him.
Armstead was my player on Defense...he was unblockable at times. Great team win and hope all the injured players heal up. Extra day should help. I wish we don't see Tom Brady next. Brady will bring his best against Jimmy and we don't want that!
In the game thread, I commented in the third quarter that if the Pro Bowlers on offense won't rise to the occasion, then other players would have to do.
ReplyDeleteWillis and Hufanga rose to the occasion!

ReplyDeleteThe 49ers just made Aaron Rodgers the only QB in NFL history to lose 4 playoff starts to a single opponent
They will make their 17th conference championship appearance, breaking a tie with the Steelers for most by any team since the conferences were formed in the 1970 NFL merger.
This team is special:
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/LombardiHimself/status/1485108466247249924?
David Lombardi:
Consider this: 49ers did absolutely *nothing* wrong over the final 6:10 — right after the failed 4th-and-1. They logged:
-A defensive 3-and-out
-Blocked punt TD
-Game-winning FG drive
0 mistakes in a snow game after 54 minutes were littered with them. Borderline miraculous.
1. As most know I was not overly happy with the draft of Lance due to the cost. The cost is now minimized, as the Dolphins will get the 29-32 pick.
ReplyDelete2. Beating Rodgers four times in the playoffs help remedies the Alex Smith draft.
It may not have gone exactly according to plan along the way, but it's worked itself out thus far.
DeleteWe should be happy as Niner fans that the cost of drafting Lance was so high (almost prohibitably high), because it's the only guarantee that our team won't need to continue winning games DESPITE their QB! The 49ers can't afford to keep Jimmy next season unless he takes a massive pay cut, and even then I don't see how that could possibly benefit this football team!
DeleteIt's a great thing for Trey Lance, because he doesn't even need to be great in the postseason in the coming years, in order to justify replacing Jimmy. The vast majority of the Faithful have come to the conclusion that Jimmy's play at QB is not determinative of whether they win or lose games. All Trey needs to do at this stage is stay healthy, show up on game day, pick up one first down on either a designed run or scramble, and then hand the ball off to Deebo and Mitchell (and hopefully Mostert), and get out of their way! That's who the 49ers are as a football team. They are a run first team with the league's best blocking TE, and most dynamic all purpose RB/WR/KR we've ever seen! There is nothing Deebo can't do at an elite level offensively, and I've never seen that before in all of my years! And as for Deebo's extension - PAY the man!
Anonymous, name should be ignorance.
DeleteKeep hating, go root elsewhere...we all see theres plenty of room on the Rams bandwagon, they get outsold by visiting teams in their own home.
Nobody respects Jimmy Garoppolo these days, and when I say everybody, I mean everybody outside of the 49ers organization who have a need to tow the company line. Heck, even Garoppolo's own family think he's playing like an absolute scrub. In fact, his postseason numbers make Nick Mullens look like Tom Brady!
DeleteThen again, thanks to Deebo, the defense, and ST, the 49ers continue to win, so maybe they will be able too hoodwink another team in to giving them a 3rd round pick for Jimmy this off-season. Fingers crossed!
What is more pathetic? Anonymous ridiculous take, or 49Reasons trying to go deep underground after he was laughed off the board.
Delete49Treasons is obviously anon...next he will talk shit about Kyle.
DeleteAnd the team respects Jimmy, ex-players respect Jimmy. People who hate are dude too focused on fantasy stats. You know who had stats worse than Jimmy, Troy Aikman, his teams won, he had a great defense and run game and his passing stats were meh...165 TDs over 12 seasons is ~14tds a season, thats not great even for 90s era. Only once did he ever exceed 20 TDs in a season. If Aikmans cowboys played today theyd say JJ takes the ball out of his hand.
Its stupidity.
Niners are now 7-0 when Deebo has 6 carries or more!
ReplyDeleteNiners have learned how to play in the 4th quarter!!
ReplyDeleteI'd prefer to play against the Bucs next week. I know the 9ers have beaten the Rams six consecutive times, but you can bet McVay and the Rams are going to work very hard to remedy that. Unfortunately, the Rams are beating up on the Bucs pretty good at this moment.
ReplyDeleteIts looking like the NFC West is going to the SB.
DeleteI believe the Rams are at a psychological disadvantage when it comes to the 49ers. Not only that, if you thought the crowd was like a home game for the 49ers, this one will be even more so.
DeleteLooks that way under. People weren't kidding when they said this is the toughest division in the NFL. 3 playoff teams, including what looks to be the two teams in the NFCCG (and ergo NFC champion).
DeleteAnd the worst team has Russell Wilson at QB! 😂
Rams are going to choke again here, aren't they? 😂
ReplyDeletemaybe...lol
DeleteWow, do you go for two?
ReplyDeleteWow again
ReplyDeleteBring in the Rams for the slaughter!
ReplyDelete2 more wins at SoFi! Let's go Niners!
DeleteWow. The 49ers better double Kupp like they did Adams.
ReplyDeleteWhy? Ward owns him.
DeleteWard owns him? If I looked up the stats correctly, here they are:
Delete11/15 Kupp 11 rec on 13 targets for 122 yards (11.1 yards average)
1/9 Kupp 7 rec on 7 targets for 118 yards (16.9 yards average)
Luckily yards don't win games -- how many TDs did he score? Many of those were empty yards in the first game when the game was out of hand, and in the second game, IIRC they moved Kupp around and Ward was not on him for most of the snaps.
DeleteWard is the Kuppernator when Kupp plays out of the slot. Williams is a better zone NCB than in pure man coverage situations and Ward matches up better against the bigger Kupp.
Main thing for the 49ers will be to make sure they come to the game with energy. Rams have gotten out to fast starts three straight games.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be a fly on the wall in the offensive war room.
DeleteIn the 21 instances that a team beat another team twice in the regular season, only to face them again in the playoffs, the team that won the first two matchups holds a 14-7 record in the postseason game.
ReplyDeleteValuable information. Thanks, Razor. Makes me feel better already :)
DeleteStill waiting for that complete game this year, would be nice for it to appear in the next 2 games.
ReplyDeleteRight?
DeleteWe've never been the same consistent team for 4 full quarters.
Also, it would be nice if you could play a game where I don't need paramedics standing bye, nothing wrong with blowing them out eh...
ReplyDeleteWhat a weekend of football! All games were masterpieces.
ReplyDeleteOne externality of the Mahomes vs Allen game is that Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers would reconsider trade requests to the AFC. I think AFC Champs are going to be some iteration of Mahomes, Burrow, Allen and Herbert for the next 10 years.
Wow the Rams fans/families lololol they are running scared.

FOLLOW THE MONEY: Niners' Kyle Shanahan seeking 7th consecutive win vs. Sean McVay's Rams.
ReplyDeleteThe San Francisco 49ers have been underdogs in all three rounds of the NFL playoffs. After beating the Cowboys and Packers as 3.5 and 5.5-point dogs, they're getting 3.5 points from the Los Angeles Rams. Only 49% of early bettors have taken the Niners to cover the spread, but 63% of the money is on them. If McVay taps into his photographic memory, he'll remember that he's lost his last six games against Shanahan and the 49ers, most recently blowing a 17-0 lead in Week 18 to lose 27-24 in overtime, granting a playoff berth to San Francisco. Sixty-six percent of moneyline tickets and 64% of the handle are counting on the Niners (+155) to make it seven wins in a row versus the Rams, who attempted to keep their home stadium from being overrun by San Francisco fans by allowing only Los Angeles residents to purchase tickets.
Sean McVay is imploring the fans not to sell their tix :)

ReplyDeletePayton of the Saints retired.
ReplyDeleteKeep him in mind if McDaniel leaves. Keep Fangio in mind should Ryans leave.
DeleteI would be surprised if Ryan left. Is McDaniel HC material?
DeleteWould we lose Kocurek if Fangio were hired? Can Fangio run a 4-3?
DeleteMcDaniel got a HC interview with the Dolphins I believe.
DeleteCubus, I think we've had this discussion before. Fangio ran mostly a 4-3 under in Chicago. Kocurek isn't going anywhere.
Under, the Vikings just hired a GM that wants Ryans as his HC.
DeleteI think Ryan will be a fine HC but he isn't ready to be one yet. I believe he would fail if he went now, lack of experience.
DeletePayton will take a year or two off in the TV booth while looking out a for a good HC opportunity and will be back.
DeleteWho would you rather have, Buckner or Armstead?
ReplyDeleteHa! Recall all the sturm and drang over that trade? Fans went nuts -- Buck or bust!
DeleteThe choice was clear for a cap-strapped 49er team. An elite DT and a locker room leader vs. a very good DT/DE with good character & good work ethic for significantly less money.
Arik's play has lived up to his pay in the first two years of what is effectively a 3-year contract. I'm betting that the last two years will be re-negotiated down the road for a more cap-friendly deal.
Lots more tough decisions are coming in a couple of months.
I think the Niners got the better player per dollar spent.
DeleteBuckner said he was willing to compromise. IIRC the average value would have been $18.5 million/yr vice Armstead at $17 million/yr. Armstead has played well this year, but I still think he needs to have elite players around him to "free" him up. Buckner can be elite without the other elite guys.
DeleteDoes run stoppage count as elite cuz Armstead ranks 3rd with a 43% win rate, whereas Buckner's name is nowhere to be found in the top 10.
DeleteThe wild part is that it hasn't been until they moved Armstead to DT almost full time midway through this season that his play has lifted to a point there isn't much difference between the two. And they only made that move due to injury to other players.
DeleteAs a DE that moved into DT on passing downs, his level of play wasn't worth the contract.
He's found his right position now and they have to keep him there.
I would think it fair to add the "clutch" gene into the Armstead dna, as he's made the plays when they had to be made in the last 3 do or die games.
DeleteArmstead when he was a DE his job was to contain the edge. He did it very well but there is no glamor in that. Armstead is also very good at defending the interior run. Armstead can play both inside and outside not sure if Buck does that or not.
DeleteThat's true under, but not only is there no glamour in that, it is a role that can be done effectively by someone much cheaper. He isn't worth his contract if that is his primary role. And tbh... he pretty consistently lost contain in that role anyway, especially against athletic QBs.
DeleteThe move inside, and his excellent play inside, makes him worth his contract.
Fair enough Scooter, it was deemed that he and Bosa both were the top edge setters in the NFL (per Bosa). I think all defensive players have issues with athletic QB's, he plays game after game after game, lot to be said for that (so does Buck). Buck had 7 sacks this year and Arik had 6 I believe he got all six when he was moved inside. Buck and Armstead stats are very close indeed this year. Armstead going to be in two NFC championship games and one Super Bowl. Buck went to one wildcard game (?). I believe if we had Buck we probably wouldn't have Bosa. I would rather have Bosa than either one of them.
DeleteRazor,
DeleteBuck could at times be a liability on run coverage, especially in wide 9. IMO, he's not as good a lateral mover as Arik, but a better gap penetrator. He used to be stronger bull rusher than Arik and had better rushing technique with his hands, but I think Arik has improved in those two areas over the past two seasons.
Also, your comment on Arik being clutch is interesting. I will look for that in future in the fourth quarter in close games.
Scooter,
"As a DE that moved into DT on passing downs, his level of play wasn't worth the contract."
Arik's a good run stopper both inside and outside setting the edge. His pass rush has always been most effective have always come from the interior. It's
his versatility that makes him worth the contract. There are very few linemen, if any, in the league who can play both the run and pass as well as him from two positions.
undercenter,
Buck does not pay DE.
"Buck does not play DE."
DeleteI disagree Mood. His contribution to the team as a DE that slid into D on passing downs was not commensurate with his contract. That changed as soon as he moved to DT on base downs. And so did the D overall.
DeletePerversely, he has been rushing from the edge on 3rd downs a bit since he moved to DT.
Cubus,
DeleteThe guaranteed money between Buck and Arik's contract is large, and that's what matters. The AAV is misleading. David Lombardi did a good analysis in the Athletic at the time of the trade and Arik's re-signing.
Buck did not make a big difference in Indy's two season-ending losses (against the Raiders and Jags) which kicked them out of playoff contention? He had combined 0.5 sacks, 2 QB hits and 11 tackles in total in those two games.
I'm happy that Buck got paid far higher than he's positional value. But Niners seem to have done the right thing from financial considerations.
The question really is would you rather have Buckner and a 3rd round compensatory pick or would you rather have Armstead and a first rounder? There is a case to be made for both but at the time Armstead was coming off of a great season, was going to cost less than Buckner and they could get a first round pick for Buck. Faced with that I can't blame them for doing what they did. Armstead is playing really well right now but he has to do it consistently and so far Kinlaw has been a major disappointment so I'd give a slight edge to Buckner but not much and if Armstead keeps this up it will look like a great move based on his value vs what he gives the team.
Delete"The question really is would you rather have Buckner and a 3rd round compensatory pick or would you rather have Armstead and a first rounder? "
DeleteThere was another important term in that equation. If they chose Buck over Arik, they would not have been able to sign 2-3 other free agents in 2020.
The biggest issue was that SF continued to want to play Armstead at a position that he was lesser suited for. I am not saying he was a bad DE but he gave little as a pass rusher from the outside. While from the inside he has always racked up pressures, even as a rookie. The added benefit is that he seems to be very strong against the run from the inside as well which I think is something he has improved at.
Delete"Buckner said he was willing to compromise."
DeleteI am sure all kinds of compromises were bandied about during negotiations. This sounds more like Buckner trying to rewrite events.
Scooter, you think Shanny is losing some confidence in Jennings by activating Sanu? A signal perhaps?
ReplyDeleteI think more just a case that Sanu is now fully ready to go. I suspect Benjamin may be the one to make way on the game day roster, with Sanu taking over PR duty.
DeleteI think Jennings has secured the third receiver position. He could be a number two receiver on other teams.
DeleteI'm just saying he had that drop of "one of the most talented throws Shanny's ever seen" in a big playoff game. Maybe you wanna put a little pressure on him by activating Sanu.
DeleteI think it's more about Benjamin not giving them anything than Jennings losing the confidence of Shanahan.
DeleteProbably right.
DeleteWould you start TB27 (Johnson) or Thomas at corner?
ReplyDeleteThomas.
DeleteI would go with TB27. I liked the way he has risen to the occasion in the last 2 games. Ryans is disguising looks more than he's done before and I'd trust a more experienced CB.
DeleteI hear what you're saying Mood, I think I go with Thomas.
DeleteIf Thomas isn't fully back to where he was playing before the injury I'd go Johnson. He's got 3 more days to get there. We'll see. Same goes for Silverback.
DeleteI started thinking about it after watching sub-par end-of-game pass defense by Bucs, Chiefs and Bills.
DeleteThomas has far better tools than TB27, and is the future. But I'm not sure he's the better CB of the two for the next two games. The next game (and the following one if they win) hinges on Niners' D not allowing big pass plays. I think the mental aspect of the game is going to be more important at the back end. Ryans is making lots of post-snap adjustments in contrast to the first half of the season. Communication and play recognition (and hence, experience) is going to be more important.
You make a really good point Mood Indigo and normally I would agree that starting the vet is the way to go, but Thomas grew so much this season to the point he really wasn't making any mistakes - noticeable ones anyway- by the end of the season. As Razoreater said he might not be healthy enough to play and there is no decision to make if that is the case but if he can go I start the rook. If he struggles for whatever reason they can make a change but he just seems to be a confident kid who picked things up and just got better and better.
DeleteYou may be right, but the post-season is different from regular season in that the game is faster and more intense with a smaller margin for error.
DeleteNiners have been winning in the last two games by being the team that makes fewer mistakes and playing top-notch defense that does not allow big plays. Can Thomas maintain his assignments under pressure? Maybe.
Transcript from Kyle's Wednesday presser:
ReplyDelete"“I think one of the hardest things with Jimmy is when people are covered, he believes he can just put the ball in the right spot, which he does a lot,” Shanahan said.
“The throw to Jauan Jennings on third and five that we were hot, he didn’t have time to throw that ball. And somehow, he created it, which is one of the most talented throws I’ve ever seen and Jauan ended up dropping it. That was unbelievable. Was it the best decision? It was, because it was right on the money, but that’s the stuff not many can pull off and that is risky. So that’s a fine line when you have someone as talented a thrower as Jimmy, that he doesn’t feel the same way always in the heat of the battle that he can’t make that throw.
“Now when you watch it on tape and stuff, then he’ll see it. But you’re not thinking about that when you’re playing a sport. You’re just reacting. And those are the things that I try to put him in better situations, and sometimes when it doesn’t go the right way, yeah, it’s disappointing. But I can’t tell you how many times that I don’t think anyone’s open and there is no play to be made and we need to make one or the game’s gonna be over and he finds a way to make it. And I’m not then saying, ‘Hey don’t do that.’ I’m thanking him for that and that’s playing quarterback in this league, so it goes both ways.”"
The difference between a talented thrower like Jimmy and an elite QB is that the latter knows when to throw it away or take the sack.
DeleteTo paraphrase Harry Callahan, "A QB’s got to know his limitations".

Who would you rather have: Demeco Ryans or Robert Saleh?
ReplyDeleteRyans. I think he has better situational instincts. If he leaves I bet they promote from within by making Bettcher DC.
DeleteAgree with you on all counts. In-house choice would be Bettcher since he has previous DC experience (unless Kocurek wants the DC position and would leave if he didn't get it; don't think that he wants it though).
ReplyDelete
