Week 13 Post Match Review: 49ers at Seahawks

By Scooter_McG

The 49ers had a fantastic opportunity to strengthen their hold on an NFC playoff spot against the struggling Seahawks, with many of the teams vying for the 6th and 7th seed losing this weekend. Instead they reverted back to the team we saw for much of the first half of the season, as they made mistake after mistake after mistake of every variety you can imagine, including getting fooled by trick plays, turnovers deep in their own half, and costly penalties that gave the Seahawks cheap yards and extended drives.

Some games don't need a lot of analysis. Some games can be distilled very easily down to some core aspects. This was such a game.

The writing was on the wall early on too. After an excellent defensive effort to force a 3 and out, the team gifted the Seahawks the opening TD as they failed to even consider the potential of a fake punt. The right side of the 49ers punt return team gave the Seahawks an easy numbers advantage on the play, and once the ball was snapped directly to Travis Homer it never looked like being anything but a big play for the Seahawks.

The 49ers did put up some resistance early on with the defense harassing Wilson and forcing some turnovers and the offense scoring points. But it was intermingled with an egregious INT by Jimmy G where he once again failed to see the underneath defender and threw it right to him, as well as a holding penalty that stopped a promising 49ers drive and kept it to a FG. Late in the half the defense also started to join in on the fun as they gave away numerous penalties including two personal fouls for hits on Wilson to make it a narrow 23-21 lead at the half despite the game feeling at that point that the 49ers should be well ahead. It was, unfortunately, just a sign of things to come.

Much like in the first meeting, the second half started with the 49ers STs fumbling the ball from a kickoff to gift the Seahawks possession deep in 49ers territory. The 49ers would be fortunate to see Gerald Everett fail to haul in a would be TD and ultimately bobble the ball right to Williams for an INT. But the reprieve was short lived and a few plays later the Seahawks took Jimmy G down for a safety to tie the game.

On the 49ers next possession the 49ers would come out passing, possibly an overreaction to having two runs stuffed inside their own five on the previous drive, and it would lead to another awful decision by Jimmy G as he threw the ball between two 49ers receivers and straight to the arms of a waiting Seahawks defender. The Seahawks would convert that mistake into another 7 points and 30-23 lead which ultimately would be enough to win the game.

The worst part about the loss, aside from the self inflicted wounds, is that the Seahawks actually gave the 49ers plenty of opportunities too. Gerald Everett probably would have been given the game ball by the 49ers if they had somehow managed to win it. The Seahawks fumbled the ball 4 times, losing it twice, and also gave up the INT in the 49ers end zone. Unfortunately for Everett he was responsible for all three of those Seahawk turnovers. The last turnover even gave the 49ers an unlikely chance to go tie the game when it looked all but over, turning it over on the 49ers 2 yard line while up by 7. But of course the 49ers failed to take advantage, despite marching down the field and having a fresh set of downs within the Seahawks 10 yard line. It was that sort of day.

Credit to the Seahawks for devising a defensive game plan that would frustrate the 49ers into mistakes. They consistently kept 8 and 9 men in the box, clogging running lanes and daring the 49ers to pass. They did an excellent job of bottling Mitchell up all game. And when Shanahan decided to try and take advantage of the Seahawks playing so aggressively against the run, they did a good job of taking away Jimmy G's first read and forcing him into bad decisions (well, forcing is probably too strong a word, but Jimmy G obliged anyway).

This game was a reminder that the margin between this team being a contender that bullies opponents and being an inept and ill-disciplined group is still pretty narrow. Any corner the team seemed to have turned the past three weeks was erased in this game. The onus will now be back on the players and coaching staff to reset their attitude and mentality quickly, and get back to playing some focused, disciplined and physical football.

    1. Yes, it has been clear for some time that JG limits the offense. At some point Shanahan either has to switch QBs to try and match what he wants to do, or consistently call his offense with the understanding he has to work around what JG can and can't do well.

    2. That's a good point, Scooter.

Is it just me, or do you agree that KS has in fact been "working around what JG can and can't do," by calling ~40 running plays per game? When KS gets away from running the ball, bad things happen! (IE JG throws INT(s)).
And I also agree, it's time Lance is incorporated into the offense. Not saying he should start, but 8-10 reps every game, to get him ready for the 2022 season.

    4. Yes, I do GEEP.

Part of the reason they went to the run against the Rams was about getting the team's mindset right. Part of it was also Rams personnel and the 49ers having an advantage running it against the Rams personnel/ alignment. But part of it I also believe was to lean on the team's strength to get them out of a funk, and put less pressure on other, less reliable aspects of the team to deliver, including JG.

Against the Jags and Vikings Shanahan stuck with that for the most part. Take the ball out of JG's hands and put it in his playmakers.

I know Mood has been outlining how with teams now really focusing on stopping the run the team has to adopt a game plan that takes advantage of the opportunities it presents in the passing game. But in order to do so you also have to put more faith in JG making good decisions, the OL holding up in protection, and the receivers coming down with the ball. Unfortunately, as we've seen all too often this season (and again today), that faith can go unrewarded a lot with this team.

JG appears to be at his best when his role is more to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers early, and convert some 3rd and 4th downs. He fails to hit shot plays aimed at taking advantage of an over aggressive defense at an alarming rate.

    5. My thing is, how can you expect to go all the way if your QB can't use the entire field, and also has trouble with underneath coverage?

That's the cruxes of the Jimmy Garoppolo conundrum.

At some point, a team is going to successfully slow down your running game if they can continuously stack 8, even 9 men in the box, and not suffer the consequences for doing so.

Even in a magical season like 2019, where everything seemed to fall in place, the 49ers still came up short because the one thing that stood between the 49ers and a Lombardi trophy ... was an inconsistent QB who never learned to use the entire football field, and could never consistently read certain coverages.

And here we are again, two years later, and it's the exact same story, only the team as a whole isn't quite as good as that special 2019 team. And that's despite using a team record amount of draft capital in order to shore up the QB position.

When you consider everything they spent on Trey, along with the $27M they are paying Jimmy, I don't think there has ever been another team in the history of the league has paid more and gotten less out of the QB position, than these 2021 49ers.

    6. Jimmy is holding Kyle back as an offensive coordinator. No question about that.

I hope Kyle understand that you can't be considered an offensive genius if the same problems hold your offense back year after year.

And I hope Kyle also realizes that you can't be considered an offensive genius if you can't figure out a way to utilize a rare talent like the duel threat QB - Trey Lance, and take advantage of his unique ability to make your team better and make an impact in some kind of fashion.

      Delete
    7. It's inexcusable.

There were at least a handful of scenarios today, where Trey Lance's ability would have been the superior option at QB, yet inexplicably, Kyle Shanahan can't seem to figure out a way to use him. I know he gave some convoluted excuse for not using Trey, but I don't buy it for a second because there have been way too many instances throughout recent NFL history where other teams have found ways to implement a duel threat QB, and use those abilities in order to enhance, and add onto their offenses, with significant success.

      Delete
    8. Also, isn't part of the idea of creating certain packages for a mobile duel threat QB, is to be able to dictate the way the defense tries to defend against you, when you bring in those specific packages?

      Delete
    9. I actually think Shanahan was being honest about why he's not been getting Trey snaps. And to me it makes sense - you get in rhythm playing a certain way, calling a certain way for one QB. I'm sure it can be hard to shift gears.

      Delete
    10. For instance, when defending the zone /read, teams will frequently roll their coverage to the read side of the play in order to allow the LBs to plug their gaps, while the dropping safety takes care of the QB. And it also puts the defense in one-on-one tackling situations by spreading them out on the edges.

      Delete
    11. 49Reasons
While I don't disagree you, there needs to be some consideration for the fact Lances' limited experience has shown he's NOT yet ready to be the starting QB.
For that, I blame Shanahan for not giving Lance reps from the first game of the season, to the last, to give him the experience necessary to be capable of starting.
IMO, if KS's myopia continues, he will deserve all the criticism he'll likely endure. Especially if the 9ers fail to win a wildcard spot in the post season.

      Delete
    12. Scooter, I do think there is a seed of truth in his reasoning, but I also know that spreading the defense out also creates certain weaknesses in defenses that can be exploited, so it works both ways.

      Delete
    13. I hear you GEEP, I'm simply talking about a limited, specific set of plays. I think their are instances in just about every game where you can use a dynamic duel threat like Lance to your advantage. Maybe it's only 2 or 3 plays a game, maybe it's 5 or 6, but I just don't see where the upside doesn't over-ride the downside. We saw how effective it can be during week 3 vs GB.

      Delete
    14. And why doesn't Jimmy ever take shots down the field anymore? Those "explosive" shots always used to be a vital part of Kyle's offense. He used to always preach about using those 3 or 4 explosive shots in order to keep the defense honest.

Nowadays they have become 100% dependent on YAC.

      Delete
    15. I still think Kyle's mismanagement of the CB's is probably his biggest sin, but his inability to move on from a QB whom he knew wasn't quite good enough, was probably the final straw that broke the 49ers back in 2021!

      Delete
    16. I keep hearing what Jimmy can and can't do but I'm confused by watching this film. Here's a guy who is also named Jimmy and he's making throws outside the numbers and, wait for it, he almost effortlessly throws a dime 43 yards in the air. So much for not being able to make those throws. Maybe Jimmy just plays better in blue. The 49ers and many here have given up on him but I think there's more to the story. Either way, we will know soon when he moves on next year.

IF THERE IS A SILVER LINING TO THIS FIASCO IN SEATTLE, IT'S THIS.....
    1) This could be the last time the 9ers have to play against the Seahawks HC Carroll and QB Wilson.
    2) KS is finally forced to accepts it's time to give Lance some reps and realizes that JG is NOT the answer to his aspirations for a post season run.

At 6W and 6L, with five games left in the season, the 9ers need to win 4 out of five games against the Bengals, Falcons, Titans, Texans and Rams to be sure of a playoff
spot. They just fumbled the number 6 spot away!

  3. When Jimmy G has no pressure he plays like a top 8 QB, when he has pressure he plays like a bottom 10 QB.
In the really big games like today he folds i hope ShannaLynch accknowledge this if we want to win a SB not just playing in a SB.
Since Joe and Steve we still are searching for this so sooner than later the QB must come i cant imagine that any fan accept always hope with Jimmy G his good games but and at the end we always choke and fold.

    1. Almost every starting QB can play like a HoF QB when there is no pressure.

We know Jimmy G's weaknesses. His decision making gets worse the longer he holds on to the ball. His brain just cannot process information at the speed of NFL while trying to execute Kyle's offense. Kaep had somewhat similar problem with a even simpler scheme.

Jimmy G is a rhythm and timing QB. If the D prevents him from getting into a rhythm and messes with the timing of the receivers, Jimmy G has problems, especially on play action passes from under center. I believe at least one his INTs today was from such a throw where he tried to force the ball to Kittle high over 2 LBs because he had already made up his mind when he turned his back to the D.

And he hasn't improved in that regard in the past 4 years. He probably will be a little better off in 100% shotgun in a simplified offense where the reads are defined clearly -- like the one McDaniels runs for Mac Jones. But I think he's reached his ceiling with Kyle's offense.

  6. ShanaLynch haven't given the ST the attention it deserves other than signing Gould and drafting a punter. Instead, ST has been raided by offense and defense during injuries to starters in those two groups.

As a result Hightower's unit has had to deal with significant personnel discontinuity as well as put up with a lot of bad ST players like Benjamin who are basically depth players for O and D who are willing but not able to play ST.

Niners really need to sign a couple of experienced special teams aces -- like Patriots' Matthew Slater and Justin Bethel.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Funny thing is they did sign some guys this offseason that were STs standouts, mostly on coverage units (Sherfield, Wilson, Cannon later on - and some guys they didn't end up keeping). But you are right about a lack of continuity not helping. And I do think they whiffed by not getting a specialist returner.

I think this might be a case where the coach may be part of the problem.

      Delete
    2. Don't think any of these are top-10 ST aces in the league. Else they would not be available. Slater at NE is just not a ST leader, he is a highly-respected team leader. Niners need such a dedicated ST leader to keep this unit together on the field in the face of constant personnel reshuffle. But first, ShanaLynch need to decide if they want to dedicate some of the post-Jimmy cap space to this unit. Till then, fans will be scapegoating Hightower.

In either case the NFL has a problem that it must fix! as this is yet another example of what some are calling an NFL crisis. Here's one solution to the NFL's officiating problem......
To solve “officiating crisis,” the NFL needs full-time officials

    4. Scooter and Razor, I have one specific question for you:

If part of the reason why the 49ers are having trouble running the football is because the Seahawks are rolling their Safeties into the box to fill the gaps, why can't Kyle use Trey Lance here and there in order to counter that? Kyle talks about an offensive play-calling rhythm, but what about the ability to counter an opposing defenses scheme? Isn't there a clear benefit of using a dynamic QB weapon like trey Lance, in specific scenarios, in order to counter the defense and dictate how they try to defend your attack?

That's the part I don't get. There is always give in take in every offensive and defensive play call, that's what makes football such a deep and complex team sport. The upside of dictating certain coverages and preventing certain defensive alignments is at the core of having specific Trey Lance packages in your arsenal. At the very least, the upside of using Lance in certain situations offsets the downside of losing some kind of play-calling rhythm. If it wasn't, we'd never have seen the advent of the wildcat offense.

In my opinion, you can't be considered an offensive genius if you can't find a way to utilize a rare talent like Trey Lance to your advantage, in some way, shape or form! You just can't!

      Delete
    5. ** I didn't mean just the Seahawks, I mean the Seahawks, just like every other opposing defense, is now deploying the same basic strategy of rolling their safeties down into the box on the majority of downs, often times REGARDLESS of down and distance.

      Delete
    6. Shanny's busy scheming around Compton's inadequacies in pass pro instead of stunting his play-calling abilities by incorporating Lance. It's a catch 22 but if you know a guy that's able to do both at the same time, and is available; I'm all ears.

      Delete
    7. That's kind of part of my point Razor. If anything, Trey Lance should be able to help neutralize a pass rush. There are specific things that Trey can do to help neutralize a lot the defensive schemes the 49ers are facing on a regular basis. I'm not even asking for Trey Lance to have a full series here and there, I'm simply talking about specific packages that are designed to neutralize some of the 49ers offensive decencies, and counter attack some of the opponents defensive schemes. That's what makes American Football such an intriguing sport. There are so many different ways to attack, and counter attack a defense, why would you completely ignore that benefit purely to maintain some kind of offensive play-calling rhythm.

Nobody would spend that kind of draft capitol on a QB in order to use on such a specialized basis, but if you have him on your roster, and you know he would benefit, and the team would benefit, by using him in some kind of specialized fashion, why wouldn't you?

      Delete
    8. Maybe Kyle simply isn't capable. Maybe RG3 was simply a fluke, and Kyle's isn't the genius people make him out to be?

      Delete
  9. BTW guys, I am not questioning Jimmy's clutch gene. I want to make that clear. I don't feel like Jimmy is a choker, in fact I think he's kind of clutch. The problem is that his inconsistencies, whether it's his sloppy mechanics, scattershot accuracy, inability to read certain coverages, or heavy feet, these are the flaws that hold Jimmy back, and by extension - hold Kyle's WC offense back.

Jimmy's inconsistencies are a constant, the only question is whether the 49ers are able to run the ball in order to overcome them, or not.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's gotten to the point that the 49ers only have one formula that works with any consistency, and that formula involves creating defensive turnovers, and putting as little on Jimmy's plate as possible, by running the football 40 times a game.

Championship teams are teams that can find different ways to win, depending on the circumstances, without relying on one specific formula in order to have success. The 49ers championship caliber defense is the element that gave them multiple formulas to win back in 2019.

  10. Holy Cow!!

First and foremost seems as though most are blaming JG for the lost and want him replaced with a very, very, very raw Lance. Lance can't fix the special teams - who can't cover a fake punt, who misses extra points and field goals and the coverage on kicks and punts is really bad. Yup blame that on JG. Oh the fumbles eh of course that is on JG. Oh yup we can blame JG for the mental lapses on defense. How about the play calls especially at the end of the game. How about the protection for the safety, oh thats right what protection. Penalties on both sides of the ball killing drives and extending their drives, oh yes JG has full control of that. JG is not strong enough to overcome the teams mistakes and his own stupid mistakes but blaming him for a """"TEAM"""" loss is about as dumb as it comes.

Unless Lance has made tremendous strides since his last start he is nowhere near able to run this team and the outcome of the game yesterday would of remained the same. Got to recognize what is wrong before you can fix it. JG is not the problem, on the other hand he isn't the solution either.

    1. Fans are at the point where they are concerned that Lance's lack of development will almost certainly be detrimental to the 49ers ability to compete next season, or at least the first half of next season.

It's one thing to delay the development of your most important player, maybe in franchise history, in order to compete for a Super Bowl. It's something else entirely to end up with a .500 record while delaying his development, because now you are potentially wasting his first TWO seasons, and by extension, wasting a significant span of his rookie contract which should be an advantage when it comes to building a contending roster.

How much better shape would the 49ers be now if they were sitting around .500, and Trey was moving into his second stage of development, with an additional $25-$26M in cap space heading into next season?

It sounds like pure hindsight, but the fact of the matter is that this team was either never as talented as Kyle thought they were, ergo he should have traded away Jimmy before the season started, or that they actually are potentially a contender, but their deficiencies at QB are holding them back and preventing them from winning more consistently.

It's got to be one or the other .... therefore either way, it always made more sense to start planning to move on from Jimmy the moment they gave up an absolute fortune in draft capital to move up for Lance.

It's certainly time to bring on Lance now!

    2. Believe me, I have just as many issues with Kyle Shanahan as I do with Jimmy (and I am concerned about Trey's future development), but I'm choosing to focus on one issue at a time, and right now, the QB deficiencies are at the immediate forefront of this team's problems.

    3. As a hardcore fan, losing to your most hated rival, year after year, eventually pushes you throw up your hands and demand changes be made, and in football, it always goes back to the QB, even if he's not the only problem. And that's because everything in modern NFL football revolves around the QB position, which is both the toughest position to play in pro sports, and also the most important position in terms of winning and losing, in pro sports!

    1. You are 100% right, Robber! Every team in the league understands the formula for beating the 49ers. Why, because every team in the league knows who Jimmy is as a QB now. Everyone knows that if you can slow down the 49ers rushing attack, and take care of the football, you've got a great chance of beating them.

And to make matters even worse, everyone knows that Kyle doesn't trust his own QB enough to open up his passing attack, even if he thought the defense presented opportunities to do just that. If the threat of Jimmy making you pay for stacking 8-9 men in the box doesn't exist, what chance do the 49ers really have of making another deep Super Bowl run?

But I assumed Kyle and John understood this. How could they not? I assumed that's why they spent all of that draft capitol to move up for Lance.

In the pre-draft press conference, Kyle made it very clear that they were looking for a "STARTING QB", because he used that exact term over and over again, and made it very clear that they needed a more dependable option at QB. But what good is dependability if you aren't anywhere near ready to start football games? That part of this plan made absolutely NO SENSE, which is why a large percentage of people feel like Kyle and John didn't quite have a plan, and have been making things up as they go along.

      Enough is enough!

  14. 49reasons - in my opinion the biggest mistake was moving up in the draft and selecting Lance or whoever. The next mistake they made was letting CJ go, then they further the mistake by keeping JG. CJ should of been the Lame Duc QB not JG. Lance wasn't and probably still isn't ready to even be a rookie. Out of this whole mess the only thing I see that KS did correct was not starting Lance out the gate. Back in the day rookie QB's rarely started, they always sat out at least one year. Football was better for it and my opinion rushing QB's too soon has ruined many QB's and football is the worst for it.

I expect Lance to come out next year, prepared to function in a complex offense. I already question his accuracy and I certainly am not looking forward to the one man show that we saw in his first start.

    1. At the cost of the playoffs? The reason to play the game is to win it all. You don't sacrifice a season till the chance of the playoffs are gone. KS owes it to the entire organization to put the best 22 out on the field. The Niners lost a CB to injury, and they are reluctant to play the RG they drafted. My question to you, should they get Banks in there so he can get live reps? I had already stated it was a mistake to keep JG.

  16. First we have to win 3-4 games to get in the playoffs, i think differently than you cuz its not that Jimmy G lights defenses up or is it not true for you that Shanny tries to hide Jimmy G his shortcomings?!
So why cant produce Trey the same like Jimmy G in your opinion?

Its not that Banks already got a shot so why not if our RG dont produce or our RT they should give time to a rookie you dont have a crystal ball what a rookie can do but if a veteran can make mistakes every week why not give a chance to a rookie?

  17. Mac Jones has completed two passes tonight, one was an off target pass to Jonnu Smith who made a great catch on, and the other was a screen pass that went for seven yards, while his counterpart - Josh Allen - has completed 15 passes for 145 yards and a TD.

Yet I half expect tomorrow morning's headlines to read something like: Rookie QB - Mac Jones, goes on the road and wins the inter-divisional battle between the AFC's 2 best teams!

It's absolutely absurd, because Mac Jones ihas nothing to do with the Patriots success (they'd be a better team if they had drafted Davis Mills at 15) and yes, I believe there are 30-40 QB's who are currently in the NFL, who could be doing the exact same thing, if not even more than Mac Jones is doing, yet the media is bound and determined to paint Jones as some kind of rookie phenom.

For a while it really bothered me, but now I've come to the conclusion that, the only great thing that Mac Jones is ever going to a accomplish during his career, is the ability to get the Patriots to overpay for him after his rookie contract has expired.

And you know what .... I'm good with that!

  18. I've been saying for the last 6 weeks that the Patriots winning streak has almost nothing to do with Mac Jones, and I feel confident that I have been vindicated after tonight's game!

  19. Belicheat has the right to be a stubborn HC and let Mac play and mask Mac his weaknesses cuz he is a multiple SB winning HC, Shanny on the other hand is a different story.
Shanny also throws rather Trey and Brandon under the bus than the guys who are actually the problem of this team like Jimmy G, Dontae J, Josh N and Tom C.
