**TRADE**

The 49ers have traded a future late round pick for Texans 5th round pass rusher, Charles Omenihu. What's interesting is, Vonn Miller and Melvin Ingram have very similar pressure rates to Omenihu. Big difference to me is age and compensation. I'd say the 49ers did alright given they don't need a starter.

  1. Four reviews from The Draft Network, generally favorable. It appears his NFL production thus far shows it. I wonder how he would due if he took off 5-10 pounds.

    1. He looks like he's right at or near his proper weight. He's more of an inside rusher than outside right now. He does have some potential outside.

  2. My post from the previous post:

I have to like this trade. He has another year remaining on his contract which gives enough time to evaluate him.

Niners need to be flinging waves of pass rushers at Stafford. Bosa needs to play fewer snaps mid game so he can be fresher in the fourth quarter. However, I can see him lining up next to Bosa on TE stunts on third downs.

From TA: "Omenihu, the 2019 fifth-round pick tied J.J. Watt for the team lead in QB hits (16) last season, and he currently leads the Texans in pressure rate (13.8 percent)."
That number would lead the Niners (Bosa at 12%, IIRC).

From NN: "At 6’6, 275 pounds, Omenihu ran a 4.92 40-yard dash but jumped 36.5 inches in the vertical with a 4.36 20-yard shuttle. That tells you he’s explosive and can change directions

    1. He's pretty quick inside. That's where I think he can help the most right now.

    2. Yeah. For the future, maybe he's part of the Buck replacement plan subbing for Kinlaw on third downs?

    3. That's the role I think he can butter his bread.

  5. Good pick-up. Omenihu posted good numbers playing with Watt last year, hopefully he can do the same playing with Bosa. Ebukam has been ok, but until his big tackle on Fields last Sunday he's been average at best. In our division with Murray and Wilson twice a year, the 49ers are going to need speed at the point of attack to help mitigate the back-breaking QB runs.

    1. Ebukam is playing at a new position/scheme for a new team. I think he will get better with more snaps. Ryans may want to continue to use him in similar stunts where he can leverage his speed-to-power abilities.

    2. Plus Ebukam has been dinged which puts you back as a player unless your last name is Bosa.

  6. I like this trade.

I think this move has more to do with Armstead than anything. With Kinlaw out the team had Armstead playing almost exclusively at DT against the Bears. I suspect that will be the plan from here on out, given how much the DTs other than Jones have struggled against the run.

But that left a hole at DE for a big, run stuffing type. So in comes Omenihu. I expect he will be primarily a run down player.

    1. Thought the same. Since AA is out of DE rotation, you need more bodies esp with Ford not healthy (here's to him back sunday??).

    2. That would be bad considering he's not good against the run.

    3. To be fair, he isn't that good full stop - he's a depth piece. But I wonder if he would be better as a run defender on the edge in the 49ers scheme?

Of course it could just be they see Omenihu as strictly a pass rushing interior DL. That's been basically the only thing he has done passingly well so far in his NFL career.

One thing they really shouldn't try and do is make him play DT on run downs. He makes Street look good in that regard.

    4. 1.71 10 yard split can't be too exciting for Kocurek that's for sure.

  7. I agree, Scooter. His primary job should be to keep our key pass rush unit fresher in the 4th quarter. Bosa/Jones/Armstead/Ebukam

#49ers are signing veteran safety Will Parks, 27, to the practice squad, per source. They may have to pull veteran safety Tony Jefferson up from the practice squad for Sunday's game.

  10. At first glance I thought this was a Meh trade. Another body that gives little juice off the edge. Then Like Scooter, I thought he looks like a guy that allows Armstead to move inside more even on base downs. That makes me like the deal much more.

Armstead was never a good edge rusher but has always gotten a fair amount of pressure from the inside. Ebukam, was never going to be that guy that could hold up the edge on base or neutral downs in the same alignment SF uses Armstead in.

I like this signing much more than Ebukam, who I thought was a depth guy that for whatever reason SF signed to starter money. I think he is a better pass rusher, but even if not because of the way SF can use him, he should help SF's pass rush unit far more than Ebukam and at a fraction of the price.

    It's a good signing imo.

  12. Good signing. His versatility to play all over the D-Line is key. Hope coach Kocurek maximizes his potential.

  13. So if Rodgers and the Packers have been in violation of COVID protocols, what is the punishment?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Quarantine for at least 10 days. Can't play.

      Delete
    2. That's not the punishment for violation of protocols, that's what any unvaccinated player has to do when testing positive to COVID.

      Delete
    3. Don't think there has been any violation of protocols. Vaccination is not mandatory for NFL players and there are protocols for the unvaccinated to follow, as well as for those who get COVID. The teams also have to follow local rules which can stringent in certain places, e.g., Santa Clara County where the Niners are located.

      Delete
    4. Pretty sure all players that are unvaccinated need to wear a mask when speaking to the media. Rodgers has not been.

      Delete
    5. Since it is Rodgers and he is one of the faces of the league. It will likely result in a large fine but not much more.

Part of the problem is it would also hurt the advertisers who buy TV spots if he were forced to miss too many games.

    6. If there's league covid protocols, and there are:

unvaccinated players are required to undergo daily testing, wear masks inside the team’s headquarters, and travel separately from their vaccinated teammates. They are also prohibited from engaging in a host of activities, from gathering outside team headquarters in groups of more than three players to attending house parties or bars without wearing personal protective equipment.

Rodgers, unvaxxed, was in violation of nearly all of them, starting with his lying about his "immune" status. That the Packers knowingly allowed that, and they knew, otherwise why the 10 day quarantine... The league needs to come down hard, and I mean HARD, on both the team and it's knobhead QB.

  14. After being gone for a few days, I took time to catch up on the 9ers hope of making the playoffs. After beating the Bears, I took a look at the 9ers chances! With 10 games left I'm encouraged. JG looked like a starting QB, not a bust and KS established a running game with Mitchell, However, I want to see more consistency and less penalties that end drives before being convinced the 9ers are a playoff team.
Players returning that will help: Kittle, RB Wilson, Gould,
    Ford and Al-Shaair.
Losing DT Kinlaw hurts the 9ers ability to stop the run. DJ Jones can fill in, but will need someone to step up and keep him fresh for the 4th qtr.

At #9 the 9ers are competing with 3 teams for a playoff spot: At #8 the Vikings (3-4) lost a head-scratcher to Dallas and look ready to fold with another loss.
At #7 The Panthers (4-4) have looked shaky since a 3-0 start. Can they win 6 more games?
At #8 The Saints upset the Buccaneers but lost QB Jameis Winston in the process. I question how many more game backup QB Trevor Siemian can win!
