The #49ers announced they signed LB Tyrell Adams, LB Christian Elliss, S Will Parks and WR Austin Watkins Jr. to the practice squad.
Jeremy Fowler @JFowlerESPN · 2m Source: the #49ers and corner Deommodore Lenoir have reached a five-year, $92-million extension.
After being gone for a few days, I took time to catch up on the 9ers hope of making the playoffs. After beating the Bears, I took a look at the 9ers chances! With 10 games left I'm encouraged. JG looked like a starting QB, not a bust and KS established a running game with Mitchell. However, I want to see more consistency and less penalties that end drives before being convinced the 9ers are a playoff team.
ReplyDeletePlayers returning that will help: Kittle, RB Wilson, Gould,
Ford and Al-Shaair.
Losing DT Kinlaw hurts the 9ers ability to stop the run. DJ Jones can fill in, but will need someone to step up and keep him fresh for the 4th qtr. I'm not sure that someone is on the 9er team.
At #9 the 9ers are competing with 3 teams for a playoff spot: At #8 the Vikings (3-4) lost a head-scratcher to Dallas and look ready to fold with another loss.
At #7 The Panthers (4-4) have looked shaky since a 3-0 start. Can they win 6 more games?
At #6 The Saints (5-2) upset the Buccaneers, but lost QB Jameis Winston in the process and I question how many more game backup QB Trevor Siemian can win!
I'm very interested to see if Trey Sermon gets his opportunity this week against the Cardinals given Mitchell's rib injury. I'd be very surprised if Wilson sees any snaps in this game.
ReplyDeleteRazor I believe JaMycal Hasty has moved into the #2 RB sport behind Mitchell. Although that could change in a KS
Deletewhim.
Hasty is their 3rd down receiving back as far as I can tell. Mitchell is far and away their best back. Much better than Wilson. I'd venture a guess once Wilson is fully ready he'll be competing against Hasty for snaps.
DeleteThe sports journalists (except Grant and Jack Hammer) seem to be in lockstep that playing the Bears showed our running game is back as well as our offense in general. And truthfully both Mitchell and Jimmy looked pretty good out there. Jimmy especially looked like his old self. But downplayed is that the Bears' defensive line was weakened and they lacked pass rush. So I'm concerned, and would venture, that this Sunday we'll struggle on offense just like before. In my mind, it just goes to show how important an offensive line is. The problem with our offense, imo more than anything else, is our starting center, RG and RT. This FO has been derelict in ignoring that.
ReplyDeleteNah, Mack was a stud out there Sunday and the Glinch held his own. Bears were a top 10 defense and both teams lacked their star. Kittle for us and Khalil for the Bears.
DeleteMaybe it's the inconsistency but I see an offense beginning to find it's identity. The Cardinals have a superior defense to ours, but yet we hung with them at their house running a college offense.
Getting Kittle back is huge. Woerner's light bulb is coming on. I feel this game is going to be a blood bath down in the trenches with the 49ers persevering by a Robbie Gould field goal!
George, I agree we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves and proclaim the offense is back. One game proves nothing.
DeleteBut I will say that the signs of the Bears outing were there in previous games too. The big difference against the Bears was the team more consistently executed at a high level (on offense).
Execution has been their biggest issue all season and is correctable. So I think there is reason for some optimism the team may be turning a corner on offense.
Consistent Execution should be a big sign that every player slaps before a game similar to the one at Notre Dame's that reads, Play Like A Champion.
DeleteThe 9er running game against the Bears was back for one game, but Mitchell has a rib injury and may not play against Arizona?
DeleteIf Murray is out with an ankle injury and Colt McCoy is the Arizona QB, that gives the 9ers a chance for an upset. JJ Watt is also out with a shoulder injury and
WR Hopkins (hamstring) is day to day. A win over Arizona would give the 9ers a big boost in confidence!
Looking ahead at the 9ers schedule, the 9ers would have a realistic chance of going 10W-7L.
Mitchell has been playing well the past few games, but what generated those explosive runs to the left was the blocking. That is RB agnostic.
DeleteIf the team can keep on executing their blocks like they did against the Bears, and like they did in 2019, the RB will be fine no matter which RB is in.
Mitchell's back! He's wearing the blue no contact jersey. Looks like he'll start the game. Whether he finishes it is tbd.

DeleteKittle returning will add to blocking for the 9er RB. But from watching 9er highlights, TE Jordan Matthews made some nice blocks.
I hadn't noticed Matthews making any blocks. If I had to pinpoint a reason for that I would put it down to he didn't play any offensive snaps ;-)
DeleteAre you potentially referring to 81? That is Sherfield. He didn't play many snaps, but he did have a couple of nice blocks.
But really the TE that was excellent was Woerner. He made lots of key blocks in this one.
George,
DeleteGrant Cohan and Jack Hammer aren't journalists they are bloggers and neither have any background that gives them anymore credibility than the average fan posting on boards like this. Grant especially is nothing more than an attention seeking gasbag who throws out chum to try and get people to respond to him. He is is the true definition of a Troll. I like what Jack has done so far with the film study so hopefully that becomes his thing more than opinion pieces.
Your point is valid but this is a league of parity and winning the way the 49ers did no matter who it was against was a good sign moving forward. This offense doesn't work unless they are running the football and they've been doing a better job of that the past few weeks not just this past Sunday. The difference was Shanahan stuck with the run more than he had the previous couple of games. I've also noticed the Oline playing better in PP although as you mentioned the Bears weren't at full strength. I think they are starting to gel though and that is leading to a better running game which in this system leads to a better passing game. Maybe you're right and they'll get exposed again at some point but I like their chances this week.
I think what the Bear game showed is how effective the offense can be when all concerned are functioning on the same page with few mistakes.
ReplyDeleteWhich coaching staff, offensive and defensive team is going to show up for the Cards game. I would pick the Niners to win this game but they are playing at Levi...no homefield advantage there.
They'll need to make their own advantage by winning the way you suggest.
DeleteTrue story undercenter and the Oline is the key to all of it. They've actually been playing pretty well going back as far as the Seattle game and seem to be getting better each week.

Back at practice today: Trent Williams and Elijah Mitchell (ribs, in blue no -contact jersey). Deebo Samuel (calf) on bike to begin practice.
It will be nice to get these guys back on the field. The next stretch of games will be crucial for the 49ers. And with the spate of injuries that we have had stemming back to last season, it's good that some regular backup players such as Shaair, Woener and Jaylon Moore have stepped up their game.
ReplyDeleteI read a couple of recent articles about Woener taking more passes in practice than Dwelley.
As much as I Dwelley, Woener is a much better blocker which is what Shanahan looks at in the TE position. I'd like to see Shanahan target Woener a little more. And please, give Juzc some action as a receiver coming out of the back field. He has been grossly underutilize in this area, imho.
Dwelley is one of the most overrated players by 49er fans imo, and I think it all stems from Grant beating that drum. Every time Kittle has been out injured Dwelley has failed to do much. He's a bad blocking TE that has actually been one of the key culprits for failed execution on running plays this season (not to mention culpable for ruining what would have been a big pass play against the Colts by missing his blocking assignment) and is only an ok receiving TE.
DeleteThe improvement by Woerner in recent weeks is low key a really big development for the 49ers. If he can keep providing good blocking as well as a decent outlet in the passing game like he has in recent weeks that will finally give the team a nice complement to Kittle.
Woerner's development is huge because he's no longer just a blocking TE. Defenses can no longer identify him and say it's a run.
DeleteSpot on regarding Dwelley. Grant Cohn hype machine.
I would like to see a blowout against the Cardinals. A complete domination on both sides of the ball. Run the ball right up their...Just waiting for this team to put it all together, from kickoff to the last whistle.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't bother me none. I like blowouts because it allows me to relax instead of having to pace back and forth the whole game.
DeleteIt would be nice not to be sitting on edge the whole game.
DeleteMurray and Hopkins didn't practice yesterday or today.... hopefully, that will work in our favor.
ReplyDeleteGeorge- I agree that the play of the OL is tantamount, and significant to Jimmy's poor play at times, but with Mack and drafting Banks in the 2nd, one could argue they felt they addressed the issue... personally, I wanted a Corner in the 2nd.
Stay away from Beckham!
ReplyDelete+1.
DeleteJust as a side note, here's what David Lombardi tweeted:
"The 49ers are #12 in the waiver claim order, and it seems unlikely that Beckham would drop that far at a minimum salary of only about $1 million. At such a low-risk price, I’d expect much of the league to be interested. Best to just wait until Monday to see what happens."
According to Darren Urban of the Cardinals’ website Neither Murray (ankle) or DeAndre Hopkins (hamstring) practiced today.
ReplyDeleteAlso, both A.J. Green and TE Demetrius Harris were placed on the COVID list.
