Kyle Juszczyk: We’re pissed off and this team is fed up
ReplyDelete“Obviously something needs to change”
AND THERE YOU HAVE IT....
It’s not hard to sell the underdog mindset to the team at this point. McGlinchey has just been lost for the season. The defense just got worked on their home field by Colt McCoy and the Funky Bunch. The division is long since out of reach, and the seventh seed in the NFC is slipping away with each passing loss. It’s pretty much now or never for the 49ers at this point.
FACT: It’s pretty much now or never for the 49ers at this point.....ADD, Should the 9ers lose to the Rams, you can stick a fork in the 2021 season.
We have a starting QB who's playing out the string because he knows he'll be gone after the season.
ReplyDeleteWe have an All-Pro TE that has not been able to stay on the field the past two seasons.
Same goes for our starting RB (Mostert).
We have a WR (Aiyuk) who was grossly underutilized for whatever reason set aside by his coach.
Front Office decisions to bring in retreads like Norman and Kilpatrick have set the team back.
Not having a true Voice who can seriously make players accountable seems foreign on this team.
I could go on, but just these items alone are enough to show why the 49ers are in decline. This team has lost its identity and the poor product on the field justifies my claim.
I predict they find their identity on Monday Night Football!
DeleteRazor: "I predict they find their identity on Monday Night Football!"
DeleteI hope you're right. But if NOT, do you recall the definition of INSANITY? I'll remind you on Tuesday!

Delete"I predict they find their identity on Monday Night Football!"
I would love the 49ers to pull off a win against the Rams. But even if they do, will that be the miracle healing balm to correct the many issues (some I highlighted earlier) that the team will still have after a potential win?
Norman and Kilpatrick is still setting the team back. McGlinch is out for the season. The Oline is not doing a good job of protecting Garoppolo. Shanahan is not being prudent by his overuse of Deebo and underuse of Aiyuk. Throw in starting Compton and it's plain to see that the same issues will continue to persist after next Monday night.
I don't believe that even a win against the Rams qualifies for a declaration that the 49ers have recovered their identity. It will take a running of table on wins for that to likely happen.
A win could be the catalyst that fuels a run!
DeleteRazor, I love you man, but there's been only one Resurrection in history and that's all there's gonna be.
DeleteNow I can picture the Niners coming out of the gate in a shot, but we've seen that before. If I had to bet, we'll kick three FGs.
George, it's tough staying positive amidst the negativity but I'm not ready to throw in the towel just yet!
DeleteFar be it from me to intrude on the pity party AES, but last I checked Garoppolo was playing pretty good, Kittle returned and had a 100 yard game and Aiyuk looked more like last year's version and admitted he needed to change the way he practiced. Sounds like the lesson worked for him.
DeleteNorman and Kirkpatrick aren't good I agree but there wasn't a whole lot out there to choose from and this narrative that there isn't enough leadership and no one is being held accountable has taken on a life of it's own with no evidence to support it other than conjecture. When a team is losing people want blood and that's all this is.
Razor, there were times during the Walsh years when the team was in a funk, when they couldn't move the ball, when their defense let their offense down, and so on. But they got out of it. Maybe they will on Monday, and I hope so. I'd like this to be just a bad dream. But when did they ever enter a funk so long that they couldn't win a home game in over 12 months?
DeleteJack Hammer in a mailbag q and a today:
"What York and most 49ers fans missed was Shanahan’s track record of failure. While often heralded as an offensive genius, Shanahan’s offenses had managed to score in the top half of the league only three times in nine seasons as an offensive coordinator. That trend has continued in San Francisco, where the 49ers offense has reached that level only one time in five seasons."
Sorry to write this. Hope I'm wrong and we destroy the Rams.

NonExp,
I haven't put the entire blame on Garoppolo. In fact, I noted that the Oline needs to do a better job at protecting him. And, I'm not having a pity party. I'm to old for that.
The 49ers issues are that they have only been a winning team in one out of four years. This doesn't just fall on Jimmy, it goes much deeper then him. I question the FO and the coaching for our current win/loss status. Bill Parcells said it best; "you are what your record says you are."
We are 3-5. I find that disturbing. I would honestly feel bad if we were 5-3, so the 3-5 record really irks me.
And I have doubts that the team can shake out of it's funk.
Can you say that this team will be highly better in 2022? We haven't developed Trey Lance to be successful in 2022. If he comes out next season still trying to feel his way around, it could set the team back a couple of seasons. Trent Williams is the best FA that the team has signed by far. Ebukam is an average player and can't be counted on to make an impact when Dee Ford misses time. Norman and Kilpatrick are over the hill. Our Cornerbacks can no longer cover and tackle. Other than Michell and Hufanga, our 2021 rookie class can't get on the field. No high draft picks over the next two years make it hard to find hope in the future for the team going forward.
I want to believe that the 49ers can still find a way to break out of this funk, but it will take a miracle at this point.
And I do believe in miracles. It's the waiting for a miracle that can be tough. One winning season in five years makes it tougher.
Offense looked pretty good to me minus the fumbles and drops.
Delete"Offense looked pretty good to me minus the fumbles and drops."
DeleteI mean, Jameis Winston looks like a good QB minus the INTs, too.
Therein lies the problem. As I outlined in my post game synopsis, the fumbles, drops and mistakes happen every week. They seem to just be a part of this team, not a one week aberration.
Shanny's not fumbling or dropping the football. Position coaches need to be held accountable too. I don't agree with Hammer's agenda which is similar to the one he had against Fangio when he first got here.
Delete"When a team is losing, people want blood, that's all this is."
DeleteNotanexpert, let me fix this statement for you:
"When a team is losing, AND THEY HAVE A LOSING RECORD FOR THE 4TH SEASON OUT OF 5, people want blood, that's just the way it works!"
There, that's a much more complete statement, and therefore a more accurate representation of what is truly happening with this team, this coaching staff, and the fan base.
You can pretend that this losing streak is a temporary phase all you want, but the fact of the matter is, Kyle Shanahan has been in charge of the organization for 4 1/2 seasons, and not only does he only have 1 winning season to show for it, he's also mismanaged his offense, starting with the QB situation, which was supposed to be his specialty.
What's left for fans to be excited about at this point ... an inexperienced 21 year old QB who has hardly played any organized football in going on 2 full years? There are a multitude of reasons why this football team is likely to end up in last place in their division, which mean that this football team is much closer to being a big fat talented MESS, rather than a temporary blip on the radar. There have been too many fundamental mistakes in the way this team has been managed over the course of 4+ seasons, to expect this team to suddenly turn this ship around anytime soon. They may still have a talented roster, but it's a poorly constructed roster, and above all else, it's na roster that simply can't stay healthy!
All of these issues are compounded because there appears to be a lack of leadership within the 49ers locker room. Players aren't holding each other accountable, and that is.obviously a product of their Head Coach. The fact that Kyle is in an offensive funk as a play caller, is only adding to the 49ers numerous issues, so I would suggest that you adjust your expectations for this football team moving forward, unless major changes take place, and those changes happen sooner, rather than later!
Razor, you say: "position coaches need to be held accountable too"
DeleteI agree with you. And BTW, isn't Kyle ultimately responsible for his position coaches?
That's the thing. Kyle is ultimately responsible because Kyle is ultimately in charge of EVERYTHING! This 49ers organization has an hierarchy, and Kyle at the very top. That's the way he wants it, so now he need to own it, right?
I personally think he's trying to juggle too many plates. He needs to restructure his entire operation, and I just don't think he's humble enough to even admit that this is a major problem, let alone make these necessary changes.
If Kyle was more of a CEO type HC, and was able to run his team more like John Harbaugh runs his team, I think the building blocks are now there to construct a perineal contender, rather than a team that gets hot once every four years. Heck, even Bill Belichick is more willing to share his power than Kyle Shanahan is.
This was a flawed organizational structure in terms of decision making, and now the chickens are coming home to roost because of it. The problem moving forward is that, even if Jed wanted to bring in a strong GM, it probably wouldn't work considering Kyle's need to ultimately be in charge of everything related to his operation.
Kyle is among the best offensive coordinators in the NFL, IMO, but that's dependent on the idea that he isn't spending most of his time micro-managing every other aspect of this team.
Call it arrogance, call it control issues, call it whatever you want, the bottom line is that Kyle Shanahan needs to get back to doing what he does best, and Kyle Shanahan the OC is superior to Kyle Shanahan the HC!
Actually, I should probably say:
DeleteKyle Shanahan the OC/HC, is likely far superior to Kyle Shanahan the GM/OC/HC!
Failed identity Razor? LOL

YA THINK?
That's funny because I always used to accuse Grant Cohn of using statistics as a crutch!
DeleteHowever, I do think ESPN's - TOTAL QBR is a much better formula than the often used, but extremely antiquated - PASSER RATING.
Jimmy Garoppolo has been playing well over his last couple starts.
In fact, for all of the love that Mac Jones is getting from the media, Jimmy Garoppolo is having a better season, which goes back to my saying before the draft that the 49ers simply cannot spend 3 first round picks and a third rounder: "to go from Jimmy G to Jimmy H" (aka Mac Jones).
I also don't like the idea of spending all of those draft picks for a QB who Kyle can't even be bothered to use on a situational basis, despite the obvious advantages that would create, especially in the RedZone.
However, having said all of that ... what's Jimmy's TOTAL QBR over his last 20 starts?
OMG, check this out:
DeleteJimmy Garoppolo and Mac Jones have identical TOTAL QBR's of 48.9, lol.
And Jimmy has a slightly better Passer Rating. They also play a similar brand of non-flashy, game-managing, pocket quarterbacking.
Like I said, the 49ers would have looked like the biggest idiots in the NFL to spend all of that draft capital to go from Jimmy G to Jimmy H, because statistically, they are practically the EXACT SAME GUY!
Sure, Mac Jones is cheaper in terms of his salary, but first round draft picks are incredibly valuable, especially in the current environment, so the reality is that the money you are potentially saving with Mac Jones being on a rookie contract, is completely offset by the enormous amount of draft capital the 49ers gave up in April. Now, would they have been better off sitting pat, and taking Mac Jones at #12, or maybe moving up a few spots in order to draft him?
Maybe, but Kyle's offense also takes longer to learn than most offensive systems, and without the athleticism to help compensate, Mac Jones likely wouldn't be nearly as competitive this season if he were playing for Kyle, and let's be real ... similar to the 49ers in 2019, the Patriots are being carried by the defense and the running game. Mac is merely managing that offense while avoiding back-breaking mistakes.
Again, I'm not hating on the MAC Attack, I'm just a realist, and I like to keep things in proper perspective. Mac Jones came into the NFL with a high floor, and we all knew that. We also understood that he came in with a lower ceiling, based primarily on his physical limitations. Mac Jones may have been a prototypical QB 20 years ago, but times have changed when it comes to the QB position. Sure, being efficient from the pocket will always be the most important aspect of the QB position, but what we've seen over the last 19 years is that there is SO MUCH MORE an Offensive Coordinator can do with a QB who is both efficient from the pocket, AND extremely physically gifted.
And can somebody please explain the thinking behind not even using Trey Lance on a situational basis?
DeleteI am so frustrated with Kyle when it comes to the way he's disrespecting his rookies, especially the current crop of high draft picks. I don't think Kyle understands the fragility when it comes to the confidence of young athletes.
I don't think Kyle understands how a decision like not even trusting his young QB enough to use situationally, particularly in the redzone and short yardage, can have an detrimental affect on the psyche of a young athlete like Trey Lance.
I have come to terms with the fact that Kyle doesn't want to bench Jimmy in favor of Trey at this time, but I don't understand why Kyle continues to treat Trey as if he doesn't trust him to play even in a situational basis, even though there's NO QUESTION that Trey should be getting some situational snaps!
And I don't understand the thinking behind using the media (Mike Silver) to go public about the fact that Trey Lance "supposedly" lost confidence midway through training camp.
How does that help Trey Lance?
I am of the belief that a young athlete's confidence is the most important factor in the developmental process! I believe that, above all else, the worst thing you can do as a football coach, is give the impression that you don't believe in them ... that you don't have faith or trust in them!
In fact, building up a young QB's confidence is the most important step in the developmental process. It's far more important than any of the X's and O's, because these young guys simply can't execute consistently without a high level of confidence, and we see it all of the time.
And KYLE SHANAHAN just doesn't get it!
Just like when Kyle took the football out of Jimmy's hands in their 2019 march through the NFC playoffs. After Kyle made it clear that he didn't trust Jimmy throughout the postseason, was it any surprise then, that when it came down to making a play in he 4th QTR of the Super Bowl, that Jimmy Garoppolo would choke, and overthrow an open Emmanuel Sanders deep down the seem, on a play that ultimately cost them the championship?
Like I said, it's obvious that when it comes to managing his players confidence, Kyle Shanahan simply DOESN'T GET IT, and that's become a major problem for this football team!
I really want to focus on the situation where Tom Compton, NOT JAYLON MOORE, was the first guy off the bench to replace Mike McGlinchey on Sunday. I really think this is such a perfect example of why I believe Kyle Shanahan's 49ers are not only likely to finish in last place in their division this season, despite the fact that they were not only widely considered one of the most talented team in the NFC, but also one of the most experienced rosters (factoring in the continuity of 4 years worth of roster building within the Shanahan system). The Niners have had their share of injuries, to be sure, but the amount of injuries haven't been anywhere close to the same disastrous level that we saw in 2020, and in fact all things considered, this team was pretty darn healthy (especially on offense) going into Sunday's extremely important matchup against the NFC West leading - Arizona Cardinals.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be covered with a series of posts, so let me start with who TOM COMPTON is, for those of you who aren't familiar with him, and why I believe he shouldn't even be on this roster to begin with:
POST 1:
Tom Compton is one of those Kyle Shanahan "favorites" that I believe has caused animosity within the 49ers locker room. He was part of the Shanahan's now infamous 2012 draft class which included RG3, Kirk Cousins and Alfred Morris, among others. Washington made Tom Compton their 6th round pick (193) out of South Dakota. Tom Compton didn't originally make the roster, as he was cut before the start of the 2012 season. However, after not being claimed off waivers, the OL was eventually signed to the Skins' practice squad. Compton wasn't named a starter until 2014, and he was eventually released on 2/2016. After his release, there wasn't a lot of interest in Compton, but Kyle's Falcons signed him about a month later - however Tom Compton didn't start a single game for the Falcons in 2016, and he would become a Chicago Bear in 2017, and he would eventually make 5 starts at OT for the Bears during the 2017 season, but he apparently struggled in those starts and was eventually released. He was then reunited with Cousins in Minnesota, where they moved him inside to OG. He did start 15 games for the Vikings at LG, but he graded out well below average leading to the Vikings declining to re-sign him following the season. Compton would then land a roster spot with the Jets as a backup OG. Compton remained a backup until their starting RG - B. Winters was lost to injury, and Compton replaced Winters for the next 5 games, before being placed on IR after suffering his own season ending injury.
Tom Compton, a Kyle Shanahan "favorite", signed a one year deal with the Niners, reuniting with Kyle after his stint with Washington, and, well, like just about everyone else, Tom Compton eventually got hurt again, despite only making 3 starts, and ended up on IR last December. He re-signed with the 49ers on a one-year deal again in April of 2021.
Razor against the Bears who are not a good team and without there best player Khalil Mack and against the Cards without Murray,Hopkins and JJ Watt, and with Colt Mccoy who is not the QB Jimmy G is.

DeletePOST 2:
ReplyDeleteHere are excerpts from an article on TOM COMPTON by Fansided's Peter Panacy, written back in May, as part of his 'WHO IS?' series for Niners Noise:
"The 49ers somewhat surprisingly re-signed veteran guard Tom Compton during the offseason, yet he figures to be little more than a training camp body."
"During the 2020 offseason, the San Francisco 49ers thought former New York Jets offensive guard Tom Compton could be a halfway decent upgrade over the then-recently released starter, Mike Person. Well, things didn’t exactly pan out that way."
"Compton’s struggles were evident in training camp, forcing a renegotiation of his contract signed with the Niners, and it was pretty clear the former South Dakota lineman was going to be pegged for backup duties and nothing more. Yet San Francisco’s slew of injuries over the course of the year ultimately resulted in Compton seeing seven games of action, starting three of them and playing a substantial 14 percent of the team’s offensive snaps. All of these were at right guard.
"TRUTH BE TOLD, COMPTON STRUGGLED!"
"Re-signed to a one-year deal before the NFL Draft, the 32-year-old sixth-round pickup of the Washington Football Team in 2012 figures to be a training camp body this season, as newly added Niners linemen will be vying to take his spot on the 53-man roster.
- 'Why Tom Compton struggles with 49ers in 2021'
"Again, Compton essentially 'is who he is' at this stage of his career: a modest backup, who can help a team with depth problems in a pinch. San Francisco added two more O-linemen in the draft, Aaron Banks in Round 2 and JAYLON MOORE in Round 5, and both figure to compete for the starting right guard spot, Banks being the favorite of the rookies and someone who’ll have a shot to unseat another potential starter, Daniel Brunskill. Right there, the 49ers have three names who could potentially earn a roster spot at guard, making it tougher for Compton to hang around after the preseason. A lesser workload during training camp means less attention from the coaching staff, and that usually translates to an early exit off the roster."
- 'Chances Tom Compton makes 49ers’ 53-man roster'
"He’s not necessarily a long shot, but it’s hard to envision Compton being anything more than a weak-bubble player. With Compton’s one-year deal carrying zero in guaranteed money against a potential earning of $850,000, it wouldn’t be hard for the Niners to simply move on if they feel those three provide better options."
"A small wrinkle in this is San Francisco’s recent loss of Skule to a season-ending ACL tear. Skule was primarily a backup tackle but saw some time at guard last year, namely due to the need because of injuries. This does thin out the competition somewhat, but Compton will still need to beat out other reserves like McKivitz and Moore to stand a chance. The likeliest of scenarios is Compton ends up playing the second half of the 49ers’ first two preseason games, then getting in on a good deal of action in Week 3 of exhibition frames."
"After that, he’s probably onto somewhere else!"
With Brunskill and Compton playing on the O-Line right side, it could well be the receipt for JG ending up on IR the rest of the 2021 season.
ReplyDeleteIt could also be a prima Facie case of WILLFUL NEGLECT by the 9er coaching staff.
LEGAL DEFINITION OF "WILLFUL NEGLECT:"
Gross Negligence / Willful Misconduct means any act or failure to act (whether sole, joint or concurrent) by any person or entity which was intended to cause, or which was in reckless disregard of or wanton indifference to, harmful consequences such person or entity knew, or should have known, such act or failure would ..
Might not be Compton. They just called up, McKivitz.
DeleteOh dear god.
DeleteNow I’m scared... SF has routinely drafted players that only they valued so highly, he is one of the many examples... and he wasn’t drafted highly.

POST 3:
ReplyDeleteOnly 2 years ago, Kyle's coaches CROSSED TRAINED Justin Skule, and he came into the season as the 49ers Swing Tackle. Joe Staley got hurt, and Skule stepped in admirably and held down the fort, so of course he played an integral part in the Niners' Super Bowl season. He ended up starting 8 games total, and played well enough to help the 49ers win the NFC!
Jaylon Moore has been praised, and already carries himself like a PRO! Jaylon Moore has more physicality than both Skule and Compton, and Moore has better overall movement skills than both Skule and Compton, in that order. These are the guys that you want to pump up their confidence, so why are you having them sit before Compton, who is already washed up, and was never any good to begin with!
Tom Compton is an old Shanahan "favorite" going back to 2012, and Tom Compton should never be ahead of a promising young player (5th RND), especially if the young player is more than just a superior athlete, and plays like a real pro! Jaylon Moore is poised, and he's a dawg!
Playing favorites is NOT A GOOD LOOK, IMO! And guys notice that stuff. It also screws with the young players confidence.
Right now something is off with Kyle Shanahan! There is a feeling around the 49ers facility that feels futile right now, and there's a negative energy happening, for whatever may be the cause.
player is on one hand terrified of making a mistake, but on the other hand, some guys seem to have Kyle's blessings, and some guys don't, so some guys are allowed to make mistakes, but others aren't?
Calling out your 1st round pick through the media, is also a bad look!
Let's be frank .... Kyle's 49ers have run out of answers! Can't really blame Jimmy, he's playing some of his better football right now, and Kyle knows what he gets out of Jimmy at this point. Jimmy still isn't accurate, and he still isn't a playmaker at this point. Jimmy is still limited, and defenses are exploiting those limitations by stacking the DL! 8-9 men in the box?
The 49ers are noticeably UNPREPARED for a team, seems like almost weekly! Cliff Kingsburry just dragged Kyle's a_s around Levi's Stadium ... I half expected the Cardinals to break out the turkey legs at midfield! SMH!
After Tom Compton came in and struggled in place of McGlinchey yesterday, Kyle Shanahan said rookie Jaylon Moore could get switched to the right side. He had been Trent Williams’ primary backup at LT.
DeleteHope this makes you feel a little better, lol!
YES!
DeleteIt does, Razor .... but - there's already damage done, right?
DeleteTom Compton has already cost the 49ers this season. He just got dominated by the Arizona Cardinals. It's that, and it's the way in which Kyle handles some, but not all of his players. And his inconsistency in this area has really hurt this team, IMO, and it's part of the problem right now.
Never Surrender!
