Daniel Brunskill blocked Aaron Donald one-on-one on 17 snaps Monday night, and the 49ers averaged 9.1 yards per play. Can he build off of this performance and keep it going?
Looked as though Shanny's vision of positionless football was on full display Monday night. Will we see more in the evolution of this scheme as the season unfolds?
Brunskill had his best game as a pro against the lambs. He put Donald on the ground a couple of times.
ReplyDeleteIt was satisfying given the 1000 pats on the back from the Rams GM down to Donald.
Delete*Prior to kickoff. ;>)
DeleteGreat job by the Oline across the board at least in the run game. The game plan for the pass was get the ball out quick so they didn't have to hold their blocks very long. The differences in this game were the conviction to establish and stick to the run and not getting down early. That opening pick by Ward really set the tone for the night. Now we just need to see it happen consistently. If they lose to the Jags this week it means nothing.
ReplyDeleteFoerster was doing some one on one work with Banks. Looked like some redirect stuff. I think he's having a positive affect on the offensive line.
DeleteKyle is NOT losing to urban Meyer. However, I won't be shocked if the Niners do not beat the spread.
DeleteWe might be facing Carlos Hyde!
DeleteRazor Better Carlos Hyde, the Jaguar's back up RB, than their lead RB, James Robinson, who set out of practice with a heel/knee injury.
DeleteRobinson played against the Colts On week 10 and he'll likely start against the 9ers this Sunday!
Robinson has been great, but it's never good when you make a living on your legs and you have a bad wheel. Maybe he finishes the game, but I wouldn't bet on it.
DeleteIn before 49lesions, aka Ball-Hand, spams the board.
ReplyDeleteDon't know why Brunskill shows up against Donald but then flounders against every other dlineman, would rather have a dude who was good 14 games a year and had two off games than a dude who's great 2 games a year and fails in 14.
Fair point. Consistency. Let's see if he's able to stack another positive performance.
DeleteWould I be wrong to observe that Donald beats linemen with speed and technique rather than overpowering with bull rushes? Maybe I am wrong, but it seems that Brunskill is more susceptible to be dislodged by bull rushes.
DeleteDonald has a bull rush no doubt about that, but yea Brunskill typically does struggle to anchor against size and power.
DeleteI am going to back off of Kyle Shanahan. As long as the 49ers aren't woefully underachieving, and they show up like they did on MNF, there's really no reason to keep pointing out Kyle Shanahan's many shortcomings.
ReplyDeleteThat said, my biggest fear for this season seems to be coming to fruition, and that has me worried.
It was a scenario where Jimmy plays inconsistent football like he always does, but plays really well in streaks, again, like he always does, and thee 49ers play just well enough to make the postseason. Along the way, Trey Lance barely plays, and even though the 49ers are eventually eliminated by a team with a better QB (GB, Tampa Bay, Arizona, Dallas), the 49ers go into the offseason with Jimmy firmly entrenched as the starter. In a scenario like this, ShanaLynch still won't really know what they have in Trey Lance, or how soon he'll be ready to play QB at the same level as Garoppolo, therefore they head into 2022 in the exact same position that they were in going into this season. Because if Jimmy keeps playing well enough to get the 49ers into the postseason, even if they eventually lose in the playoffs, how do you sell releasing Jimmy to the large portion of the fan base that only sees Jimmy's strong points, andjust simply ignore his shortcomings, because all they know is that when Jimmy is at QB, the 49ers are a pretty good team, and when he's not, the 49ers tend to lose.
This, for me, is the nightmare scenario, because like I said, simply making the postseason isn't good enough at this stage, if you aren't simultaneously setting your team up for success in the future. And unfortunately, a large portion of the fan base don't understand the nuances of the QB position, and aren't ready to embrace a 21 year old QB with limited experience.
Let's all hope that this isn't the way things play out from here on out, and that Kyle and the 49ers prove me wrong for a change, because I shutter to think about the consequences of such a scenario, yet here we are, and this season seems to be playing out exactly the way I feared it might.
"You're a really good player if you're thriving on third down in the NFL. I don't even care what else happens. Two places, right? There's third down and the red zone -- that's where all the veterans hang out."
DeleteI'll share with you my biggest surprise. The Red Zone. Now I thought it would improve with the addition of Lance, and his specific plays towards that end.
If I'm not mistaken, Jimmy G has us up to 75% success rate in the Red Zone. That's impressive.
DeleteYah, no doubt about that Razor. That's one reason I'm laying off of Kyle for the time being. Jimmy is playing some of his best football, that's not even debatable. And I like Jimmy, and I also respect the way he has handled his business this season. He's a pro. But I've seen this movie before. Jimmy gets hot, Jimmy gets cold. But my beef has never been with Jimmy, he's a serviceable QB, and that's nothing to sneeze at. Sometimes he's even better than serviceable, like we've seen the last few game.
DeleteAll I know is that their are a lot of Jimmy Garoppolo fans among the fan base, and like I said, there's a scenario where he plays well enough to get them to the postseason, and then it gets hard to sell trading him to the fan base.
Can ShanaLynch even justify trading Jimmy now, before they even really know what you have in Trey Lance? This was my main reason why I thought keeping Jimmy was fraught with terror, like Steve Young likes to say. Steve and I see it exactly the same way, BTW.
But like I said, I'm laying off Kyle now. I realize that I've allowed my dislike for him as a HC to get too personal, and that becomes too negative, considering I am a 49ers fan first and foremost.
Anyways Razor, the good news is that I think the 49ers are about to go on a nice little run, and so my dislike for Kyle goes on the backburner, and it's time to just have fun with this run, and worry about next season after this season ends.
Razor: "If I'm not mistaken, Jimmy G has us up to 75% success rate in the Red Zone.
Delete* The 2021 9ers are the most efficient red zone team in the NFL, scoring 19 TD's on 24 trips to the red zone. tops the NFL.
Anyone know what our red zone efficiency was last year? What about 2020?

Delete9er Rez Zone % since 2017:

Thanks! Very interesting.
DeleteI think we can get on top of these guys early if we force Lawrence into a couple mistakes. He's gotten skittish under pressure, plus he's holding the ball. Two recipes for disaster with Bosa up front and Ward behind.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a rookie QB to me.
Delete8 games in? Maybe but c'mon, he's not that rookie.
DeleteLawrence is still a super talented young QB, but he's on a bad team, and rookies do tend to develop bad habits on a bad teams. It was almost unanimous as to the question of which rookie QB was being drafted into the toughest environment - Trevor Lawrence, hands down, but you can't deny his talent.
DeleteRazor
DeleteBosa has 8 sacks so far this season. he'll face off against Jaguars LT Cam Robinson, who come into a Week 10 matchup against the Colts, with a back injury. I see Bosa sacking Lawrence twice, with multiple hurries.
2 sacks seems like a lock, Geep. He should get 4 but we'll see.
DeleteYep! Twice is my minimum, but I'll take all I can get lol
DeleteJaguar CB Shaquill Griffin says he wants to cover the top NFL receiver(s) regardless of who they are, even if they're taller, faster, or outweighs him. On Sunday, against the 9ers, he'll get that chance in his matchup against one of the best receivers in the NFL — San Francisco 49ers' Deebo Samuel.
ReplyDeleteSamuel is one of the best as a dual-threat: He can beat you deep or take a handoff and blast through a hole as a running threat. He is the second-leading receiver in the NFL with 979 yards on 54 carries and five touchdowns.
He's also the first wide receiver in the NFL to have three or more rushing touchdowns in a single season in the NFL since 2016, when Kansas City's Tyreek Hill and Green Bay's Ty Montgomery both did it. As a ball carrier, Samuel has 11 carries for 58 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Can't wait!
Delete49Reasons, you notice no beat reporter from the 49ers practices are reporting which hand Mitchell's finger has the bandage?
ReplyDeleteSure they did, it's his right hand, and he won't be playing this week if he's right handed.
DeleteWhat school did you get your MD from?
DeleteI really like what I'm seeing in Mac Jones.
ReplyDeleteAccurate
Intelligent
Confident
Control of the offense
Poise
Not easily rattled
Level headed.
I believe that he is the ROTY.
And now a 5 wins in a row QB.
Not too bad.
Pretty much what we thought.
DeleteHe's in the perfect situation too.
DeleteYep. All the things he displayed at a very high level in college. All the traits that made a guy like Drew Brees very successful.
DeleteI really didn't get the amount of disgust many 49ers fans had for the idea of taking Jones.
Leading up to the draft, I felt that it would come down between Mac and Trey. Trey may eventually turn out to be the best QB 0f the 2021 QB rookie class, but at the moment it's Jones hands down.
ReplyDeleteRaz, it's hypothetical, but do you think that Lance would be starting for the Patriots right now?
My personal answer would be no. Trey' best days are ahead of him. Which fits his title of QBOTF.
Nope. He was the least ready quarterback. Many chapters to write yet before we get to the end of his book.
