Bobby Turner's Perfect RB?

The #49ers are signing RB Jacques Patrick off the #Bengals practice squad, source said. Big opportunity for the onetime XFL star with injuries depleting the SF backfield.

This dude was behind Dalvin Cook and was Cam Akers counterpart. He's 6'2 235 and runs like a battering ram. I remember Mr. Turner's first word when asked what he looks for in a back, and it was the word "toughness". Next up was coachability, quickness and patience. This isn't your typical Kyle Shanahan running back. Going to be interesting to see how he fits in this system....

    1. He's not flashy but if he's getting the holes Sermon got on his one run, look out!

They didn't draft their perceived type of quarterback, OG and now they pilfer a running back that you wouldn't typically associate with this offense.

Circling back to some earlier tweets ... new 49ers running back Jacques Patrick was between 235-240 pounds last season but slimmed down -- a bit -- in the offseason and is around 228 right now. Cincy offense is similar to SF's, so getting up to speed should not be too difficult.

  4. I'm going to stay away from criticizing Kyle's handling of Trey Lance for now, because Jimmy has been playing well enough for the Niners to get off to a 2-0 start, despite back-to-back road games in the eastern time zone. I got baited into weighing in on the QB situation on the last thread, and even though I have very strong feelings about it, similar to Steve Young, now is not the time to keep harping on it.

Something else really has my attention right now - I know a number of people who followed the 49ers very closely during this year's training camp and the preseason this year, and I haven't talked to a single one who understand why Kyle is treating Trey Sermon and Brandon Aiyuk the way that he is. Not a single one. The closest thing I've been able to find out is that Trey Sermon and Trey Lance had some issue at the mesh point that caused some fumbling issues during training camp. Brandon Aiyuk is not being targeted right now, and 3rd round pick - Trey Sermon, received carries this week AFTER Trenton Cannon, who was just signed off of the Ravens practice squad.

I understand why Trey Lance didn't get on the field this week, and I support that decision, but I also want to remind everyone that if Kyle is forced to call on Trey Lance at a critical juncture later in the year, he's going to be putting the football in the hands of a QB who hasn't actually played in a real football game in almost 2 years.

And just a reminder, this is the kid who the team has anointed as the QB of the future. If you screw up his confidence before he even has a chance to develop ..... I honestly don't even want to finish this sentence.

    2. Trey Lance will play when the Coaching staff feels he gives them a chance to win. Period. The fanboys like yourself are blinded by Fantasy Football stats instead of results. Like him or hate him JG wins when he's on the field. If that changes I doubt Shanahan will hesitate to put Lance in there if he thinks he gives them a better chance to win. Bottom line is you know nothing that Shanahan hasn't thought about a million times during his career and look like an idiot when you whine about him not doing what you think he should. Right now he sees JG as the guy he can win with. Suck it up and deal.

    2. Yeah, I can't wait too, rib. Might be good in several roles.

    3. I do like this pickup, at least better than than the Kerryon Johnson pickup. I'm not going to compare this signing to Trenton Cannon, because Cannon actually has special teams value to go along with his value as a rusher.

I still cannot believe Trenton Cannon got his first carry as a Niner ahead of Trey Sermon. That really upsets me. There isn't a minute in a day when Trenton Cannon is a better option at RB than the 49ers 3rd round draft pick!

Anyways, I'm hoping the 49ers can catch lightning in a bottle, or should I say thunder in a bottle (see what I did there), with Jacques Patrick. I've heard that he has slimmed down a bit, and I sure hope he has, because even if he has a feel for how to run in this system, he still needs enough initial burst to blast through the hole or crease when he finds it.

      Delete
    4. I meant to call Trenton Cannon's value as a runner limited, as in pretty darn useless. He does have special teams value in covering kicks, and he may be decent at returning kickoffs, because he has had some success at that although his sample size is limited, but you guys are going to find out pretty quickly that Cannon has very little value as a running back.

    5. And, BTW, the Niners are currently averaging 3.8 yards per carry. That's 24th in the league. When you consider that Garoppolo has the lowest air-yards, meaning how far the ball travels through the air, something needs to change. They got a couple big wins, and the Philly games was very satisfying, but I am telling you guys right now, this defense isn't that good. A Kyle Shanahan team ranked 24th in YPC, and dead last in air-yards, isn't going to win the NFC West the way the rest of the teams in our division are trending. That's a fact. Something needs to change, and maybe that something is getting Trey Lance a little more involved in this offense. They need to start developing him anyways, so why not start using him now as a part to me player? He expands and enhances the running game, and he's lights out as a play action passer.

      Delete
    6. Start using Trey as a *Part time player. Maybe 15-20 snaps, depending on how the game is playing out. The way this offense is currently playing, they need a boost if they are going to beat Green Bay, Seattle, Arizona, LAR, etc, IMO.

      Delete
    2. Yep. Stafford looks excellent, unfortunately for the 49ers. A big key to that game will be shutting down the run game and making sure they consistently get pressure on Stafford.

      Delete
    3. Stafford has played pretty well but he's always good for a bonehead throw and that got picked on Sunday in Indy. Rams really didn't have any business winning that game. The Colts moved the ball up and down the field on them and came away with no points twice inside the 10. I like our chances against them.

      Delete
  9. I can't believe I am going to say this but I think I will root for LA vs TB. If SF is going to do well this year then they will need to be able to beat the Rams... and I think Kyle and this D matchup ok against the Rams. Even if I don't know how much of that was due to Goff.
So I am hoping the LA beats TB, as I don't want them getting a buy. I feel more comfortable beating LA than TB in the playoffs on the Road.

In the past, I've seen fewer QB sneaks from Jimmy than circumstances warranted. I think it showed a lack of confidence in Kyle on the timing and power of the interior linemen to get it done. I am expecting more sneaks on 4th and short 1's this season, a la Brady, as Razor pointed out.

  16. Shanny reports that Mitchell's shoulder injury was a little worse than a stinger; which leaves either a shoulder sprain, strain, tear, bone fracture, impingement, or frozen shoulder. Since he sounds like he'll play I'm leaning towards a sprain. We'll see how it affects his game Sunday night with that little extra rehab.

  17. GB Packers VS SF 49ers: 9ers win
The weak link in the Packers team is their defense! * Green Bay has one sack on defense this season and They're without Za'Darius Smith, their best pass rusher.
    * GB D-line has big bodies who can't threaten McGlinchey with speed around the edge or the interior offensive line with quickness off the snap. This bodes well for JG dropping back and the offense taking more shots down the field.
    * The Packers are 20th in passing DVOA and 24th in rushing DVOA. They're already down David Bakhtiari. His replacement, Elgton Jenkins, has an ankle injury. The Packers are giving Jenkins all week to recover to determine whether Jenkins can play. If he does suit up, the odds that Jenkins is 100% is slim.
    * I look for Bosa to sack Rodgers twice, Ford and Armstead once.

    * I expect JG, Aiyuk, Deebo, Kittle and the 9ers passing game to open up the running game. * I think both RB's Mitchell and Serman will play with good numbers, both running and catching passes from JG.

As much as I want to believe you, this is why Aaron Jones is the GB player the niners need to take.

*Davante Adams owns the 49ers. In four career games against San Francisco (including playoffs), Adams averages nine catches, 121.5 yards, and a touchdown. If Emmanuel Moseley and Deommodore Lenoir were to really lock him down and hold him to 30 yards below average, he still hits the over by five yards.

I look for GB and Rogers to try to match Adams against 9er CB Lenoir, to test the rookie.
QUESTION: Do either of you expect the 9ers to use a 2 high coverage with their safties?
      * There's a blueprint for stopping Aaron Rodgers, and the Packers should be concerned.....
For Aaron Rodgers, at least in 2020, it was coverage in which he faced two deep safeties.

McCaffrey injured his hamstring and Mills just had a nice series watch led to a TD pass. I liked Mills at Stanford and think that he will eventually be a full-time starter.

    1. Yeah, Mills is talented but missed a lot of valuable development time at Stanford because of the long recovery from his serious high school leg injury. Hopefully, he will get decent coaching and Texans will add some talent around him next season -- starting with the O line.
