Draft Picks?

We don't need no stinking draft picks, according to Rams GM, Les Snead. After losing their star running back for the year, the Rams have traded what essentially will end up being a 4th round compensatory pick, or their 5th & 6th round pick if they don't get one for, Sony Michel. New England unloads an underachieving, oft injured running back who Belichick wasn't going to resign next year anyway. This is what the Rams have left for the 2022 NFL Draft:

  • 1st round (0): Traded to Lions for Matthew Stafford
  • 2nd round (1): Own pick
  • 3rd round (2): Own pick + compensatory pick (Brad Holmes hiring)
  • 4th round (0): Traded to Texans in Brandin Cooks deal
  • 5th round (0 or 1): Traded to Patriots for Michel (if Rams don’t receive 4th-round comp pick)
  • 6th round (0 or 1): Traded to Patriots for Michel (if Rams don’t receive 4th-round comp pick)
  • 7th round (2): Own pick + pick acquired in Aqib Talib trade
In other news, Steve Young has proclaimed the 49ers are a Super Bowl caliber team with Trey Lance as the starting quarterback. His reasoning was the price tag for Lance and the statement it made regarding Jimmy G. If the competition is close you should start Lance and let him grow into the job. By week 10 most of his warts should be gone. The big question is what will your record be by then, and if things go south, the concern about his long term development becomes an issue.

I still believe that Lance will be used primarily in red zone packages early on, but I like his chances to take over as the starter at some point this season; just not week 1.

  1. Or you start Jimmy, he stays healthy and they go 12-5 this year (.750 win percent), and they run roughshod all over the NFC to the SB.

A healthy 49ers team with JG takes the NFC.

  2. Steve Young' word holds weight and credibility. But I'm not to sure if this is Steve Young the analyst speaking or Steve Young the player who thought he should have been the starting 49ers QB long before Joe Montana went to KC.

In any case, I'll continue with my thoughts that Garoppolo will start until Shanahan decides Trey is ready to start. When that takes place is anyone's guess.

Kyle Shanahan is still fielding 49ers’ Week 1 starting QB questions:

“I feel I’ve talked pretty consistently this whole time… I’ve got a pretty good idea and I think our team does also.”

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall Shanahan saying all along that Garoppolo is the starting QB.
As many here have intoned, that could change at some time during the season, but I don't see that happening early on.

      Delete
    2. Yep, nothing changed and I don't expect it to anytime soon.

      Delete
    3. I wouldn't expect a change at any point during the season unless the team was losing with a healthy Jimmy and by a lot, or Jimmy gets Alex-ed and goes out with injury only for Kyle to stay with the hot hand.

This idea of changing midseason doesnt happen unless you don't think you're making the playoffs. Lets not forget this team does not have a 1st round pick to lose for, they traded away two to win now and the future, but they still need to win now and Lance just isn't ready for primetime, no fault of his own. Dude is very young, only had 1 true seasons as a starter in 1AA ball, and hasn't played in but one real game in 2 seasons. Compare that to Alex who was about the same age but had 2+ seasons of play under his belt and was a Heisman finalist, leading his team to undefeated season (11-0) and BCS win (Fiesta Bowl) over Pitt in the in his final season...and look how throwing him in early ruined his rookie season.

Its okay for him to sit the entire season, because he was drafted 99.999% for next year and beyond.

      Delete
    4. I expect Jimmy to have a career year.

      Delete
    5. It's OK to sit Lance if Garoppolo steps up his game, and gives the team the best chance to win a Super Bowl. I personally don't think that's who Jimmy is and neither do ShanaLynch. I mean, Garoppolo is actually fairly cheap now. If ShanaLynch though he was the man, they wouldn't have mortgage the future on a QB.

Kyle is ready to take his offense to a new level, and he believes Trey is the guy to do it, in part, because of his mobility, which is something Jimmy doesn't offer. Because of this, Trey doesn't need to be a better passer than Jimmy. It's about who Kyle thinks gives the team their best chance to win.

Jimmy is going to get his shot, because he's earned that as far as the locker room goes. We'll see if he can hold the rookie phenom off this season.

I personally don't see that happening. In fact, I'd give 5/1 odds that says Trey supplants Jimmy by the bye week at the latest.

      Delete
    6. The funny thing is ... we haven't even seen the "Trey Lance offense" yet. Things are going to look entirely different when the regular season kicks off! Kyle can do soooooo much more offensively, with Trey Lance in the field.

And I think if Jimmy is still the starter past the bye week, it's only because the team is winning on the strength of it's defense and rushing ng attack.

      Delete
    7. And that's OK with me. Winning is winning. Of course, the postseason is an entirely different animal!

  5. Tartt has been activated, folks! That strengthens the secondary if he's really 100% back from an injury that's ended many a career.

  6. Lombardi reports that Jalen Hurd is back at practice today.
Looks like the 49ers are still giving Hurd an opportunity to make the team. But, if Jalen doesn't play on Sunday it will be interesting to see what the FO decides to do with him.
My guess is that he's tucked away on PS.

    1. It could be true that ShanaLynch would like to stash Hurd away on the PS, but if a healthy Jalen Hurd is as talented as we think he might be, I don't think it's a good idea to expose him to waivers. I think IR is more likely. Keep in mind teams still don't have to DPI - Designate Players for Return - when they place them on the IR, do that's a real possibility. If they do that, he'll get an additional 2 months from this coming Sunday, to get his knee right.

"Don’t look now, but Jalen Hurd made a couple plays at 49ers practice today. He had a nice catch-and-run and a nice stand-alone run. And that was like the fourth most interesting thing of practice. Just a wow day."

Perhaps it's best to hold off writing Jalen Hurd' epithet.

AES, Knowing the Niner fanbase, I'm sure there will be plenty of Hurd epithets written over the length of his career, however long that will be. :)

    2. Rib,
I’m still holding out hope for Jalen, but if the team wants to keep him they will need to put the IR label on him.

I’m reminded of the Solomon Thomas situation where Shanahan/Lynch kept extending his stay. But with Solomon, even when he did play, he never established himself as an important piece that could make a difference.

Hurd has at least shown that he can be a positive contributor if and when he does play.
Not sure if Jalen will play against the Gypsies, but if he does he will need to shine.

  8. Good to see the smaller bear (Bosa) and Tartt on the filed for the Niners. I was going nuts a week and a half ago when some writers were claiming that Tartt would now have to sit out the first 6 games of the season. Kind of embarrassing IMO.

Anyhow, Dee Ford continues to progress, and honestly, if this isn't a mirage, and Bosa & Ford are indeed ready to produce like we've seen in the past, the defensive talent this team has almost seems unfair. This is a championship caliber defense if I have ever seen one. The kind of defense that can easily carry an offense if they get off to the usual shaky start and take a little while to get going.

Not only are their no holes on this defense ... they 2 to 3 men deep at a bunch of positions. Unlike others, I don't see any concerns with the DB's, and just like we saw in 2019, the Niners front 7 is so stout, and so good at relentlessly pressuring the opposing QB, they are going to make life easy on the Niners defensive backfield.

  9. IMO it's going to be a long year for Stafford and the LA Lams. Virtually no running game, an O-Line that'd average at
best and a D that is very good, but no longer great.
If you had to choose, who's D would you pick? The Lams or the 9ers...yea, me too!
As far as Lance starting...How many times does KS have to say it? He'll start when KS thinks he's ready!
Think of it this way, you bought a new house that's the best house you've ever owned, but you want to sell your old house for top dollar. Yep, you're going to do everything to fix up the old house and make it look as good as possible so you get top dollar for it...RIGHT? Hold open house so the prospective buyers can see it and imagine owning it, (IE start JG as long and let him win games)!
The talking head pushing Lance to start is click bait! Like
pavlov's dog, they ring the bell and the fans salivate! Does that mean lance is going to start? Would you pull you old house off the market if you were trying to sell it?

  10. QUESTION: With the return of Jaquiski Tartt from toe surgery, who starts at safety for the 9ers against the Lions? Tartt, Tavon Wilson or Rookie Talanoa Hufanga?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Whoever's earned it. Probably, Hufanga.

      Delete
    2. It depends on Tartt's conditioning and whether he's close to 100%. I'd say it would probably be Wilson if Tartt isn't ready. Wilson has been the guy whose been playing with the ones, for the most part. Hufanga is the future, but I think Ryans will ride with the experience, at least early in the season.

      Delete
    3. Razor
IMO, the Raider game will determine who starts at S against the Lions. Based on what I've seen so far, I have to agree with you, it's Hufanga!
The Tartt, Wilson, Hufanga is a GOOD problem JL/KS will have to decide.

The one problem the 9ers have yet to fix, is at RG! As of now, I do not see a solution to the problem! No O-Lineman on the team, has shown the ability to be the starting RG.
QUESTION: Should the 9ers trade for a RG starter? If so, who should they trade for?

      Delete
    4. we haven't seen much of Tavon Wilson because the Niners have hardly played their starters during this preseason. Wilson has had a fantastic comp. We'll see who gets most of the snaps in the first half of the Raiders game.

Make no mistake though, I am excited about Hufanga, he looks like he has a promising future.

      Delete
    5. By the way GEEP, Kyle ultimately gets to decide, but Kyle's going to defer to Ryans on this one. John Lynch will not be deciding who starts at Safety.

      Delete
    6. John Lynch is not going to step out of his "lane' and dictate who Ryans needs to start at Safety, week one. John could probably throw his weight around if he really wanted to, but he's not that guy. He knows the HC and DC need to have the power to make these kinds of game time decisions.

      Delete
  11. I believe that if Hufanga enters a game at any point this season he will become a mainstay for years. Talon will be like having an extra LB on the field and I look forward to watching him making RBs cringe.

  12. There is growing buzz in and around NFL circles that the 49ers should start Trey Lance over Jimmy Garoppolo. Jordan Schultz spoke to 2 NFL executives, 2 NFL coaches, and an NFL scout, all of whom believe Lance gives SF the best chance to win.

Says the scout: “Trey Lance has an absolute cannon. I think Kyle Shanahan’s ability to design plays, combined with Lance’s athletic ability and ridiculous arm strength, would offset Jimmy G’s advantage as a more accurate QB who at this point that understands the offense better.”

    Amen to that!

See my explanation above, as to why JG will continue to be the starting QB. (RE: You've bought a new house and you want to sell your old one).

      Delete
    2. Yah, I get it, and you're not wrong, GEEP. IN a perfect world, it would be great to use the early portion of the season to showcase Garoppolo. And the early schedule looks favorable for doing exactly that. If Kyle can make Jimmy look good, while winning games early on, it pumps up Jimmy's value before the trade deadline. BTW, I think the trade deadline is only about a week after the Niners' bye week, so that might work out perfectly. But, how does it look if they trade Jimmy while they are winning, imagine the added pressure on Lance, who will still likely need reps at that point. If Trey comes in the they start losing games, the 49ers fan base may believe the sky is absolutely falling, which could severely hurt Trey's development, IMO!

This whole situation is potentially dicey, IMO! And I am not a fan of a 2 QB system.

      Delete
    3. My biggest worry is damaging Trey's development. That to me, matters more than the difference between getting a 2nd or 4th round pick in return for Garoppolo. That's all well and good, until it effects Trey's development negatively. That's a red line for me! Trey's confidence matters to me way more tha Jimmy's trade value.

And BTW, I would be willing to bet my top dollar that opposing DC's would rather face jimmy than Trey.

      Delete
    4. 49Reasons
The ONLY WAY I see JG getting traded before the trade deadline, is if a contending team's QB is injured and they're desperate enough to trade at least a 1st RD draft pick (and likely a mid round pick) in the 2022 draft. Do I see that as a "POSSIBILITY?"...yes, but I'd also say the odds are 100 to one of it happening.
As long as JG stays healthy and the 9ers keep winning, I'd be shocked to see the 9ers trade him.
WHY? A: Because even if JG is nothing more than a "game manager" the Defense will carry the 9ers to the play-offs. If the 2021 defense stays healthy and Both Bosa and Ford play to their potential(s), this is (IMO) the top D in the NFL, as good as, or better than the 2019 Defense
B: The run game can carry the 9er offense if KS loses faith in JG (as I believe he did in the 49er VS the GB Packers game). Just my opinion, but that's how I see the 2021 season playing out...

  13. GEEP, I may be being a bit overly protective of Trey's psyche. I'll admit that. But after going through the Alex Smith saga, and watching the 49ers completely destroy him mentally during his early development (5 different OC's in his first 5 seasons), I'm very sensitive to it with young QB's.

The way I see it, you do everything you can to build up a young QB's confidence. It becomes the #1 priority in his development. And as you build him up from a confidence standpoint, you gradually put more and more on his plate. Watching Kyle empty the backfield vs the Chargers (with Lance at QB) more often than he ran play action, was very troubling for me. I don't understand why you would have your 21 year old QB work on his weaknesses in front of 10's of millions of people (a national audience). Why not give Trey easier reads and call the types of plays that Trey's is most comfortable with, and excels at? Works on the other stuff as he naturally progresses, slowly adding those concepts onto his plate, while maintaining his confidence. After all, I am pretty sure ShanaLynch didn't use all of that draft capitol on Trey because they thought he'd be the best pure pocket passer right out of the gate. The kid threw less than 300 passes in his college career. So why are you starting him with empty sets, and pure passing concepts, right out of the gate, as a first impression in front of the fans?

I just think Kyle is going about this completely backwards, and it really upsets me! It goes back to common sense. I don't pretend to know more about X's and O's than Kyle Shanahan, but when it comes to common sense .....

"after going through the Alex Smith saga, and watching the 49ers completely destroy him mentally during his early development"

I would point out to you, as I'm sure you KNOW, that Kyle Shanahan IS NOT Mike Nolan, or Mike Singletary. IMO, the best coach to develop Trey Lance and he could play for, is Kyle Shanahan!
After two preseason games, what we've seen from TL as an NFL
