Going to be a terrific season if the team can be reasonable healthy. Anything short of a playoff berth should be considered a colossal failure. The talent is there and the coaching staff is quite capable. Health is paramount to a great season.
ReplyDeleteUC,
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I felt that even after the loss of Bosa last season, that the 2020 team still had the talent to play in post season games. But the loss of Garoppolo and Kittle and other players put the team in a bad space.
I want to see Jimmy G have a great year and force Lance to stay on the sidelines until further notice. Lance is only 21 YO, waiting a year or two won’t cause him permanent damage, if anything, he’ll be more than ready when he completely takes the reins.
As you said UC, anything short of a playoff run is considered a failure (especially if the team stays healthy).
Agreed.
DeleteAaron Rodgers sat for 3 years and he turned out ok. Best case scenario is Jimmy balls out like he did when he first got here.
ReplyDelete"Health is paramount to a great season". Here's to health!
Here are my looming questions for the upcoming season.
ReplyDelete1. How effective will be the pass rush be?
Last year with Bosa out and Buckner gone, the team went from having the 2nd best pressure rate in the NFL to having the 20th ranked pressure rate. The best pass rusher on the team was Journeyman edge rusher Kerry Hyder.
With Bosa back but likely not at 100% and Hyder gone. Who will pick up the slack? Will Ford ever play again and if so will he be as explosive? Will Kinlaw's added experience equal more consistent pressure? Can Sampson learn a pass rush move other than his patented run into the OT and handfight for 3 seconds, before disengageing?
2. Who will emerge as the 3rd receiver?
Will Shanahan want to go with more of a speed demon to try and open up things underneath for Brandon and Deebo? Or would he prefer a more sure handed possession receiver that will catch 3rd down passes in traffic? Will Hurd ever play in the NFL? Is that player on the team currently?
3. Who will emerge as cb3. With Verrett's track record it would be prudent to have a contingency plan should he go down. What player do we expect to be the next man up should one of the starters go down?
Shoup
Delete"With Bosa back but likely not at 100% and Hyder gone. Who will pick up the slack?
WHO? Ebukam Samson. Last season, Ebukam ranked fifth among outside linebackers in pressure rate at 14.7%, trailing only Markus Golden, T.J. Watt, Matthew Judon and Bradley Chubb. He had a higher pressure rate than Kerry Hyder Jr. (12.6%)! And he only played on 35.45% of the Rams snaps last season.
1. Think they could sign a vet to reinforce the edge if Bosa and/or Ford don't look encouraging.
Delete2. They've got Hurd, Lee, White, Benjamin and others competing for that 3rd receiver role. I don't know if it'll be one guy, but maybe an assortment based on matchups.
3. I absolutely think they're waiting until a vet cb they like gets cut. I fully expect them to sign one after team cuts.
Razor
DeleteYou have a vet in mind that could reinforce the edge if
Bosa is slow to recover? I hope I'm wrong, but I Don't expect Ford to offer much help.
How about Melvin Ingram? He's still unsigned and at 32 Y/O and coming off a knee injury, he'd like take a lot less than the $16 Mil per year he was making with the Chargers.
Ingram, Houston or a player that gets released after training camp.
DeleteI had been thinking Kerrigan, but he just signed with the Eagles. There are still some good vet options available.
DeleteI’d like to see how Ronnie Blair fits into the equation as a pass-rusher. Blair gave the defense some valuable snaps pre knee injury. Not only is Blair a good player coming off the bench, but he also plays smart and was rarely caught out of position.
DeleteIf Blair can regain his pre injury abilities he could still be a value to the team. Perhaps Lynch and Shanahan feel the same way.
Geep,
DeleteI guess we see Ebukam very differently. When I watch his tape, I see a guy who wins with hand fighting after a few seconds. Nearly every sack where he had to beat a blocker was the result of another factor Donald, Coverage, Qb give-up. This was not like Bosa or Ford, who beat their blockers quickly and forced the qb to move.
He is more of a hustle sack guy and that is why the rams frequently replaced him last year on passing downs.
That said, maybe the wide 9 will suit him better with his speed and power but that means SF is projecting based on traits and not on something he has shown.
I like him as an OLB but to me, as a pass rusher, hes a JAG.
I agree that if we dont have to much serious injuries we will be a contender.
ReplyDeleteDont be surprised if Trey beats Jimmy G in TC.
The Niners just signed WR Marquise Lee.
ReplyDeleteI forgot we also have Kevin White on the team. He's 28 years old. If the team could get some production out of Lee and White that would be great.
DeleteUc/Cubus
DeleteI wouldn't count on very much production from Marquise Lee.
While he was productive at USC (2011-2013), as a possession receiver, his best year was 2012 when he won the Fred Biletnikoff award. He is not big, listed at the NFL Combine as 6'0" X 192 and not that fast. His Combine 40 time = 4.52s
Drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2014, he suffered thru a series of leg injuries, missing several games every year, then missed all of 2018 and most of 2019 with leg injuries.
Jacksonville released him April 20/2020.
Lee signed with the Patriots April 28/2020, then opted out of the 2020 season, due to COVID 19.
He showed enough to get signed. I think if he wants it bad enough, he could earn some of Bourne's snaps.
DeleteRazor
DeleteHe hasn't played for 3 years and never played a full year since signing with Jacksonville in 2014, mostly due to leg injuries. At 29 Y/O, how much has he got left? I hope he does well but see him as a camp body.
As Shoup mentioned depth at WR is a concern. Niners know it and Lee may be the first of many to come through camp.
DeleteLee has the talent and the opportunity so I'm not gonna bet against him. It's his if he wants it I think.
DeleteInjuries have been the main problem with Lee, not talent. If he stays healthy he is probably the third best WR on the roster right now. Having the year off due to COVID may be exactly what he needed to get his body recovered.
DeleteAs undercenter suggests, this may be the first of a few guys the 49ers look at, as depth behind Deebo and Aiyuk is very lean. They were apparently after DaeSean Hamilton before he tore his ACL.
Sadly, he has a long history of injuries going back to college.
ReplyDeleteFrom an NFL.com draft profile, which projected him as a number 1 WR btw:
Player Bio
An extremely motivated, dynamic, playmaking receiver, Lee's junior season was plagued by shoulder, knee and leg injuries and a revolving door at head coach, where he cycled through three. Showed all the traits desired in a No. 1 receiver early in his career and has overcome a lot of adversity in his life to get to this point.
Yea, I liked him coming out. He's got a great opportunity. Let's see what he does with it.
DeleteThe talent is obviously there for Marquise Lee, no question about that whatsoever.
DeleteBut ..... the KNEE! The kid had a horrible injury, and it's sltaken it's toll on the body overall. Marqise can't stay healthy anymore, and those are the types of guys the Niners need to depend on a little less for a while. At least, that's what I thought!
Richie James Jr will break out in the slot, and Special teams.
Book it!
Also - Ambry Thomas is also a fantastic kick returner, guys.
DeleteAlso - My early impressions of Trey Lance: To call Trey an impressive young man, would be the understatement of the century!
I'm not saying I have a man crush .... I'm not saying that .... I am trying not to say it! :)
Also - just because Demo Lenoir took Austin Watkins' lunch money (Dion even chimed in) doesn't mean Lenoir wouldn't do the same to other guys, he's a baller for sure, with an alpha male mentality.
Ends up, the kid the Niners were targeting much earlier, is another alpha male, but with some serious athleticism, and physical skill set.
Also - perhaps most importantly, both CB's are very confident players (Witherspoon .. cough cough) who believe in their ability no matter what, as long as they stand strong as a team.
Also - Add Strong Safety, the Samoan - Talanoa Hufanga, and the defensive theme is starting to emerge - PHYSICAL, get in YOUR FACE, and get in your head. Niners are stepping up man to man, press coverage. Knock you on your heals, disrupt your timing. ring ii
*that last text was glitching out
DeleteAnyways, I gotta give a shout out the top team in Major League Baseball - your
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS!
He'll yah! This is looking exactly like the other championship teams at the beginning of the last decade.
BUSTER POSEY is rejuvenated. THEIR STARTING PITCHING is fantastic, and they are knocking the cover off of the baseball, when we're talking power!
We are past the opening 40 GAMES, so we can make our first true, in depth assessment.
Bottom line: Giants are back!
OK guys, here's a big question:
How far does Kyle go in integrating The Prodigal Sun - TREY LANCE, into his offense as an athletic QB option, in the red zone, third down, short yardage, key plays .....
or is there a better way to get Trey some meaningful snaps?
Like naming him starter after the bye week?!?!
49Resons
DeleteThe Giants are for real!
IMO Lance should only start if....... A) He earns it, by beating out JG
B) JG is hurt and can't play C) Lance shows he's better than the other 9er QB's
If JG can take the 9ers deep into the playoffs and NOT GET HURT, that's better trade value for the 9ers.
For sure.
ReplyDeleteI dont see Trey beating out Jimmy early on, if at all this year. Jimmy has so many more reps in this offense he should be a lot better than Trey at this point.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, as Jimmy was never a mobile qb, it's almost criminal the way SF addressed their interior Oline. Brady and Brees had their worst games/seasons when their oline allowed interior pressure. I am not comparing them as qb's but rather noting that these type of qb's struggled much more when facing the type of pressure that SF routinely allowed.
If Jimmy doesn't face as much interior pressure I expect he will look like a top 8-12 qb in the NFL.
The biggest question will be if he can stay healthy.
