Mid-Season Trade At The Wire

Looks tot me the best draft in a time cuz they adapted.
ReplyDeleteMaybe took some pages from Bill Walsh :-)
If you can't adapt, you'll end up sacked.
DeleteHey guys. I was a little surprised that the 49ers did not come away with an Edge rusher.
ReplyDeleteWith the teams two best pass rushers, Bosa still rehabbing and Ford’ uncertainty, I felt it necessary to explore this path.
Ekubon could be looked at as Ford’ possible replacement, but he’s no Ford when it comes to overall field presence. They might sign an Edge in July-August, but I doubt that he will be viewed as a impact player.
I think we all were surprised, AES. Still a couple f/a's out there.
DeleteAES
DeleteA possiblity: EDGE Hamilcar Rashed Jr. Oregon St. He
Had a monster year 2019, but was out to lunch 2020 and as far as I know, no NFL has signed him.
His scouting report: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/hamilcar-rashed-jr-nfl-draft-player-profile-oregon-state-edge/
If the 9er coaches can figure out how to motivate him?
Thought he was signing with the Jets.
DeleteRazor
DeleteI haven't seen any press release, but I haven't been
paying attention either, so you may be right?
If Saleh and the Jets can motivate the kid, they've got a steal.
I hate to jump on the bandwagon late but I think this was the best draft the 9ers have had in many years. We will see if I was correct in a few years
ReplyDeleteChances are you're right. I'd like to start the dynasty asap.
DeleteTime will tell, obviously. For mine rather than calling it the "best draft" I would say it was the most focused draft they've had in many years. Rather than try and address everything they targeted key areas. Get your franchise QB, and protect the franchise QB by beefing up the interior of the OL (which has been a problem for four years) and giving him a running game to lean on that can both churn yards and provide explosive plays. And beef up the secondary which was lacking depth at CB and has a lot of guys on 1-year deals. It was a smart approach to building the roster for sustained success.
DeleteI hope you're right OldCoach because they don't have a first rounder until 2024 which means they need to hit on some of the picks on day two and three to make up for it. Looks pretty good but I'm concerned about the CB spot. They are dangerously thin and if a starter gets injured we are going into uncharted waters with the lack of experience behind them.
Delete@NAE: Yes, they don't have 1st rounders in 2022 and 2023, but they will soon have free cap space when Jimmy G. leaves. That money can get some pretty damn good FAs which will be equivalent to the draft picks given up (at least one of the 1st rounders, possibly both).
DeleteAnd the 49ers will get some draft capital in return for JG as well, you'd imagine. They may not have 1st rounders, but they still have plenty of draft picks.
DeleteRazor i hope you dont mean Blake Carrington LOL
ReplyDeleteMy respect for Jimmy is at an all time high when I hear he's embracing the competition. This means we'll be getting the best out of him, while he helps the rookie. Very unique situation. We're very lucky to be in this situation. Thank you Jed York and Lynchahan.
ReplyDeleteGood to see you aren't angry at Shanahan anymore Razoreater. It was an interesting case study to see all the responses and vitriol on Twitter and in here without even knowing who the pick really was. Sometimes you just have to trust the guys making the decisions and wait until things happen.
DeleteIt was a learning process, that's for sure.
DeleteJimmy G. always struck me as a humble, consummate professional, an total team player, which is probably why his teammates have so much love and respect for him. I always felt like he would would fall in line and make the best of the situation. The fact that the 49ers apparently have no plans to rework his contract, which is a classy move on the part of the Niners and should make him appreciate ShanaLynch and Jed York. I feel like a lot of teams would probably use their leverage to, at the very least, force him to take a moderate pay cut, but instead, the 49ers are treating him with dignity and respect, which won't go unnoticed by the locker room.
DeleteAt the end of the day, Jimmy understands that it's a business, just as he experienced with the Patriots. If he's smart, he'll use this opportunity to rehabilitate his reputation in order to boost his stock so that he can help write his ticket out of Santa Clara and perhaps land in a place where he has an opportunity to write a new chapter as a starting QB.
The proverbial WIN - WIN, which always made too much sense to ignore, IMO.
The Broncos didn’t have enough trade ammunition to move up ahead of the Dolphins, who took Phillips 18th overall. But if Phillips had fallen into the 20s, Denver General Manager George Paton was ready to make a move up.
ReplyDeleteBest edge in the draft, and by some margin imo. Would have gone earlier if not for injuries.
DeleteWe're gonna run the ball 60% of the time, protect our young DC and our defensive players coming off injury. It's gonna be bloody glorious!
DeleteI know it'll never happen, but would like to see what it'd be like with a steady stream of RBs each game. In my fantasy world, just do it in sequence. 1-2-3-4-5. Throw $10,000 in the pot and have winner take all.
DeleteWould also like to see a bake-off between McGlinchey and Jaylon Moore.
Kyle believes 50%-50% is the optimum way to go, he may go run heavy, but that will be at most and extra 2%, 52-48, something like that, but I get the spirit of where you are going with that.
DeleteThe rest of the NFC West went speed and finesse, while the Niners went speed and power, so Kyle definitely looks to pound the rock! He wants to impose his will, and there's no better feeling when you can impose your will physically, against division does, like they've done VS the Rams lately.
The beauty is that Kyle will mix in a lot of play action, choice routes and what he calls "explosives", and he's going to have opposing defenses on their heels, which isn't where you want to be against a physical rushing attack!
I wouldn't be surprised to see an improved Jimmy G as well. In fact, I kind of expect it. Maybe he can get just a little bit of the major he had prior to the knee?
Safe to say the 49ers are in a prime position! They look like an elite team, top to bottom!.
I meant, maybe Jimmy can get just a little bit of the *MAGIC back
DeleteAnd it's just a matter of time before the natural takes over behind center! DANG!
DeleteThe run game should be lots of fun to watch. I hope you're right Razor and they run it 60% of the time.
ReplyDeleteOne thing we know based on this draft is this team when healthy has one of the best rosters in the game and there aren't a lot of openings. They focused on areas where they were thin and possibly could use an upgrade. My only concern is not going CB earlier and not taking a WR was a surprise. We need the starters to stay healthy at CB and WR or things could go sideways in a hurry.
ReplyDeleteNotanexpert
DeleteDon't sleep on the UAB FA WR Austin Watkins. He's a late bloomer and overlooked and I'm surprised he was not drafted on day 3, especially after he showed well at the Senior Bowl. Looks like the 9er scouts were paying attention.
Watkins Scouting Report: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/austin-watkins-jr-nfl-draft-player-profile-uab-wide-receiver/
I've heard a few reports suggesting the 49ers may also be sniffing around Golden Tate and Richard Sherman. Basically, now that the draft is over, FA restarts to fill the remaining holes.
DeleteScooter
DeleteGolden Tate wouldn't surprise me, we could use a WR3. Sherman may be too expensive and will likely get a better offer from NYJ? If we get close to the regular season & have CB injuries, then maybe? If he's still not signed?
I've also read somewhere that Seattle is talking to Sherman? Don't know if it's just Seattle talking to see of he's interested, or it's serious?
Personally I would be looking to sign Gareon Conley for CB depth/ competition.
DeleteScooter, I am very, very impressed with this kid out of UAB, Austin Watkins, the cousin of the 4th overall pick out of Clemson - Sammy Watkins.
DeleteHis film looks worthy of a mid-round pick, IMO. Have you watched the film on this kid?
I was wondering how you felt about the kid, he looks to me like a taller version of Kendrick Bourne.
I like him - very promising for a UDFA. He could well earn his way onto the roster, given everything after Deebo and Aiyuk seems open to competition. But there is a reason he went undrafted, so not going to get my hopes and expectations up.
DeleteThanks for the link GEEP. Maybe he'll be another Bourne like find. I heard about Sherman possibly coming back but didn't hear about Tate. Thanks for the info Scooter_McG. I'd be a lot more comfortable if we have a little more vet depth in those areas for sure.
ReplyDeleteThere are still some interesting FA edge guys available too. I doubt the 49ers are finished adding to the roster just yet.
DeleteI haven't seen the interview yet, but according to Chris Biderman, on the Rich Eisen show earlier Shanahan confirmed it was Lance and Jones that the team was most seriously considering at #3. Not Fields. This gels with what I thought would be the case, and what had been doing the rumour mill too, with Silver/ Lombardi saying it wasn't Fields.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if anyone's seen this NN article today about Justin Hilliard, Ohio State LB, one of our UDFAs and one of PFF's top UDFA signings.
ReplyDelete6. LB JUSTIN HILLIARD, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
"A five-star recruit out of high school, Justin Hilliard was supposed to be the next big thing in college football after receiving over 35 scholarship offers from top-tier programs. Unfortunately, injuries derailed his first two years as a Buckeye, and it wasn’t until 2020 when we finally saw him on the field for an extended period of time.
Hilliard was Ohio State’s best linebacker last season. He recorded an 80.0-plus PFF grade in run defense and coverage, eventually earning a third-round grade from PFF’s Mike Renner in PFF’s 2021 NFL Draft Guide. The bottom line on Hilliard’s scouting report reads: “If he stays healthy, Hilliard has an all-around skill set that can fit in any scheme at the next level.”"
