Will Jimmy G be a 49er after Sunday?

By Scooter_McG

It felt like the 49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo were headed for a divorce ever since the team opted not to redo his deal to create much needed cap space after the 2019 season, following a season in which he played every game and led the team to a Super Bowl. It was all but confirmed that Jimmy G’s run with the 49ers was nearing an end when the team surprised everyone by trading up to pick #3 to take a QB in this year’s draft, well in advance of the draft, to give the team time and latitude to do its due diligence on the prospects (which in my opinion will lead them to making Trey Lance the heir apparent come Thursday). Now all that seems left for the “Jimmy G: QB of the San Francisco 49ers” epitaph is the exact when and how of his departure.

Ever since the trade to pick #3 the 49ers have been trumpeting the narrative that they like the idea of holding onto Jimmy G this year, with the idea of him starting while a rookie sits and waits. At the same time they have also made it clear to any team listening that it would take an offer that blows them away to move on from Jimmy G this offseason, and rumours have been that such an offer would require a first round pick. Maybe they were being 100% open and honest about their intent to keep Jimmy G, maybe they weren’t. But with the knowledge the team moved up to #3 to get their QBOTF (and maybe present) as well as strong rumours the team tried hard to sign a veteran signal caller with starting experience in FA (with the likes of Dalton, Trubisky and Flacco all heavily linked to the 49ers this offseason) it seems fair to assume the team was at least keeping the option of trading Jimmy G firmly on the table.

During the recent pre-draft press conference, both Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch refused to guarantee that Jimmy G will remain on the roster during the coming weekend. Or that anyone will even be alive, for that matter (side note: George Kittle responded to this statement with a funny tweet that he will check in on Sunday with Shanahan to let him know he is still alive). At the same time, they again reiterated that they like the idea of Jimmy G being on the roster so they don’t need to rush their rookie QB into action before he is ready. To me, both of these statements ring true.

Since the press conference, there have been reports that the 49ers stance on trade compensation for Jimmy G is softening, and they may now listen to offers that involve a second rounder rather than a first. And these reports suggest they are getting some interest.

Having an incumbent veteran starter like Jimmy G hold the fort while the rookie develops for a year would be very similar to the situation the Chiefs created in 2017 when they moved up to draft Patrick Mahomes and sat him behind Alex Smith for a season. And that approach certainly didn’t hurt Mahomes’ development.

However, the Alex Smith situation was a little different to this one. First, Smith is the ultimate professional who had already once previously shown he would not create waves in the locker room as he mentored his future replacement. Second, the Chiefs had been a consistent playoff team for a number of years under Smith (missing the playoffs just once in four years, and then only just missing out with a 9-7 record), but failed to get to the AFC Championship Game let alone a Super Bowl. While Smith was universally respected by teammates, they had time to realise the status quo wasn’t getting it done.

With Jimmy G and the 49ers, he is loved by his teammates and they believe only luck and injuries have prevented them from winning a Super Bowl the past two years. With that kind of belief in the locker room, bringing in an heir apparent while allowing Jimmy G to remain with the team runs a real risk of creating division amongst the playing group and making it harder for the rookie to establish himself as a leader. And maybe Jimmy G doesn’t want to be the starter for a franchise that no longer believes in him, which could also lead to locker room distraction. It may be best for all parties to let this relationship end before any potential resentment or distraction festers.

If they do trade Jimmy G this weekend, and I think there is a very strong likelihood of it happening, what could the 49ers receive in return? I’d be hoping for at least a package similar to what the Jets received for Darnold. Maybe a player swap could be an option too, for example a trade package with the Patriots involving Stephon Gilmore going the other way. This would be an ideal scenario for the 49ers in my opinion as it would solidify one of the few remaining weaknesses on the 49ers roster.

And if they do trade Jimmy G, it would behoove the team to then trade for another veteran QB that can be the bridge for the rookie and a reliable backup option once the rookie is ready to start. I could see the team exploring a trade for Gardner Minshew, for example.

What do you think – will Jimmy G be a 49er after this weekend?

  1. Jimmy's bags are packed and he's leaving on a jet plane.

According to, Tony Pauline the 49ers will be selecting Mac Jones because they couldn't sign Flacco or Dalton. If true, it's the dumbest thing I've heard in awhile.

    1. Razor, don't discount the possibility that Jed York stepped in at the last minute and saved Kyle from himself on Monday morning. I wouldn't be shocked if Jed overruled Kyle in favor of Trey Lance, which would help explain why Kyle was so full of piss and vinegar during the press conference.

I guess we'll find out soon enough. If the Niners take Mac Jones, trade Jimmy G., and don't make a move for another veteran signal caller, I think it's safe to assume there is truth to Pauline's report.

Days ago I posted that, for me, it felt like Kyle was leaning towards Mac Jones because in his eyes he seems to think Mac Jones is most prepared to step in and start this season. And I posted this early in the week, before Pauline's story broke. I don't feel that way, but I do know a lot of people do.

I also feel like the bad blood that seems to have developed between Kyle and Jimmy G. was unnecessary and counterproductive.

And I have to say this one more time .... IMO Justin Fields should be the guy. As much as I like Lance's potential, I don't think his game is as refined as Fields at this stage. But like I've said last week, I can live with Lance because I can envision his potential in Kyle's offense. Mac Jones seems like the wrong choice for many reasons, and I am hoping Jed came down on the side of John, Adam, Ran, and the rest of the scouting and personnel department.

I think Kyle has completely miscalculated the blowback to Mac Jones (though he did already get a small taste of it at the press conference), and I think Kyle has underestimated the amount of added pressure he'll be putting on his young QB, as well as on himself, if he reaches for a one-deminsional QB (with an average arm at best) who most NFL executives have a 2nd and 3rd round grade on (according to many respectable sources).

No disrespect to Mac Jones, but his draft stock has simply be inflated due to the 49ers, and the way in which this entire process has unfolded. Mac Jones would never have been in the discussion had his name not been attached to the 49ers after making this big move weeks ago. And Jimmy's trade value would likely be much higher as well, for whatever that's worth.

    2. For all of Kyle's brilliance, evaluating talent is not his strong suit. And that's OK. It sounds strange to think that someone as smart as Kyle, who has been working with NFL QB's, RB's, WR's, TE's etc, wouldn't be particularly great as a talent evaluator, but it shouldn't a shock. It's an entirely different skill set. These high level scouts eat, breath, and live for the evaluation process. It's what they do. As much film as Kyle watches, these guys watch more. They know exactly what to watch for on film because they've been doing it twelve hours a day, usually for many years before they get to the highest level. And they do an evaluation as a group, it's not just one person's opinion.

The 49ers have a strong personnel department, IMO. Adam Peters, Ran Carthon, Tariq Ahmad, R.J. Filled, and the rest of the national and area scouts .... these guys know what they are doing. Just as you would never expect them to be calling plays on Sunday, Kyle should be deferring to his top personnel managers and scouts!

And if Kyle is overriding these guys who do this for a living, at a very high level, well then shame on Kyle!

    3. Oh, those pesky advanced stats and anylitics:

"Concerns about Jones’ pedestrian arm are validated by how long his passes spent in flight. Over expectation stats are all the rage nowadays, and we can devise such a method here. Contextualizing air time data with throw depth, where the ball is hashed relative to the target, and the quarterback’s throwing platform creates a baseline we can use to evaluate the relative quickness with which a quarterback’s passes arrive. In this category, Jones was dead average for a college quarterback, which is not particularly reassuring. Comparatively, the passes of Zach Wilson (-0.08), Trevor Lawrence (-0.07), Justin Fields (-0.03), and Trey Lance (-0.02) all arrived ahead of schedule. But, because it’s difficult to conceptualize how meaningfully different a few hundredths of a second are, this can be put in more practical terms. If Lawrence and Jones both throw a pass that travels 15 yards, we can expect Lawrence’s throw to win that race by about a yard and a half."

      Delete
    4. "The NFL is experiencing a changing of the guard at the quarterback position, and there are questions about whether Jones is well-suited for a league that is increasingly featuring some of its best athletes behind center. Only 17% of Jones’ throws in 2020 were made off-platform, one of the lowest rates among Power 5 quarterbacks. That kind of stationary play style is tough to reconcile when you consider the way the pro game is trending. Since 2019, about 27% of NFL throws occurred from a compromised throwing base. Pure pocket passers have been viable in the past, but the trend has been shifting towards mobility for some time now."

    5. Kyle Shanahan appears to be a lier, and keeping the 3rd pick a secret has been the worst kept secret in NFL pre-draft history, and it has sunk the trade value of their own QB.

  3. Scooter, thanks for another good article.
Yes, I think Garoppolo is traded during the draft. To New England for their second round pick (number 46). I also think he'll play well for them.
I could see Minschew as the bridge QB too and would look forward to seeing what he can do in Kyle's system.

  4. "He is considered the smartest quarterback in this draft," Schefter said of Lance. "The smartest, and maybe ready to play a lot sooner than people think. And I think that's one of the reasons the 49ers are struggling with that decision.

"Now, I believe, as of this morning, they have made that decision. I believe they've come to a consensus here in the last 48 hours, the last 24 or so hours, to reach a decision. We don't know what that decision is, and we very well will not know what that decision is leading into the draft."

    4. After watching it I thought Shanahan was actually getting annoyed at people that kept trying to force Mac Jones as the guy they want. He was very careful to outline each time they like them all. And I think people are equating wanting a "starting QB" to meaning they want Mac Jones, because the media narrative is that he is the most pro ready, but (a) I don't think Shanahan meant a starting QB day 1, and (b) even if they do want a guy to start day 1 I don't think that means it must be Mac Jones.

I've heard how people thought Shanahan was very defensive in the presser. I think he was annoyed at the questions. Very directed and consistently ignoring his previous answers.

And as per my comment below... things don't line up with Trey Lance's comments if Mac Jones is the guy they've always wanted.

    5. Yup, Kyle was mad that had to suffer thru a presser 4 days before the draft. That extremely irritated answer invoking death by Sunday clinches it for me that it's not Jones.

  5. Good write-up, Scooter.

However, did I miss reading in your article that Jimmy G has a no-trade clause in his contract for this season?

He has complete control over where he goes this season.

Those resentment and team division issues are not very relevant -- Niners have good pros in the locker room. They with get with the program -- they all know that NFL stands for Not For Long :)

    3. No team will pay $26M for a backup. That was clear even when the contract was signed with the no-trade clause. He doesn't want to go to any team even if he is slated to start there.

IMO, the reason the no-clause trade was put in place was that once it would become clear that the Niners want to move on, he would have substantial time to figure out where he wanted to land after considering the viability of signing a long-term contract with his new team.

Currently only a couple of teams can afford him. But by the end of next season, more teams will be looking to move on from their current starter, including the Pats.

As I've come to expect from you, yet another fine article that raises many questions. At least in my mind it raises Questions that as fans, we may never get answers to?
To me, it raises the question of competence on the part of JL and KS for not realizing it could, and apparently has, alienated JG, with the potential of dividing the locker room and the 9er fans.
One would think both JL and KS would have had a meeting with JG to inform him of managements decision that they were trading up to draft a new QBOTF and get his reaction, rather than assume he would go along with it and at a minimum, ask the question if he willing to be the 9ers starting QB for the 2021 season, giving the new QB a year to become the new face of the franchise? If not, come up with a plan to trade him, that both parties could accept. As it is, it now looks like a messy break up.

At any rate, here is my last 9er mock draft, before the NFL 2021 draft.
I've Been out of town for a few days with no time to keep up with the latest on the blog! Good to see that we're still beating a dead horse and I didn't miss anything and I refuse to get wrapped around the axel on the QB KS drafts. Besides, If I'm to believe the blog, he's an arrogant, obtuse buffoon that needs to be put in his place! How dare he decides who fits the offensive scheme that he develop, when there are people on his staff (collectively, or individually), that know more than he does? What a Cretin!
Besides, we'll know what we're complaining about when the fat lady (Goodell), Sings and KS drafts a QB that we approve of!
In the mean time, here's my wish list as my mock draft.

#3: I think Fields is the 2nd best QB in the 2021 draft.
#43: There are several options I've looked at, but finally decided on trading down, plus an additional Rd #3 player.
    Rd #2: CB Erick Stokes
Rd #3 extra pick: TE Brevin Jordan. Despite playing for 3 OC, he showed success. 9er coaching and weight room will help realize full potential.
Rd #3 Pick #102: EDGE Patrick Jones.
Rd #4 Pick #117: WR Nico Collins. Big possession receiver. Successful despite inconsistent coaching and quarterback play at Michigan. sat out 2020 season.
    Rd #5 Pick #155: S/CB Tre Norwood
    Pick #172: Drew Dalton C/G
    Pick #180: OLB Charles Snowden,
Rd #6 Pick #194: RB Pooka williams. Small 5'9" X 170, 4.36s 40, Fits Shanahan's ZBS system. Has Off filed red flag for domestic violence against girlfriend that will need to be addressed and may take him off some team draft boards?
Rd #7 Pick #230: OT Tommy Doyle, Miami. He has talent, with good NFL coaching could become a depth player, but will start out as developmental OT.

Looks like your assessment of the 9ers trading JG is correct and was the plan all along.

The 49ers made their blockbuster move last month because they knew exactly who they wanted.
All of the flavor of the week talking heads have no idea who the 49ers will draft. One week it’s Mac, then Justin and now Trey.

I find it amusing that when the pundits can’t get a solid clue on who the 49ers will draft, they resort to creating a story like a disconnect between Shanahan and Lynch.

My personal view regarding drafting a QB is that Shanahan constructed the offense, so he should have the strongest voice on who should navigate it.

  12. Ted Nguyen:

Wilson is my third-ranked quarterback, but as the acting general manager of the 49ers, I have to take into account what my head coach wants. Wilson thrives playing off-script. Shanahan wants a quarterback who can play within his system, which is why he is reportedly set on picking Mac Jones. In this mock draft, I outrank him and also have to protect him from himself. Yes, Jones might be the safer choice, but I believe in my coach’s ability to develop quarterbacks and want to take the guy who is a scheme fit and has higher upside.

Trey Lance has one of the biggest arms in the draft, is a dangerous runner and might have had more responsibilities at the line of scrimmage than any other quarterback in the draft. He has accuracy issues but he’s only 20 and he’s reportedly a maniacal worker. I believe he can fix some of those issues and continue to progress. We’re taking Lance here and letting him sit behind Jimmy Garoppolo for a year. If Garoppolo has a big year, he’ll increase his trade value and we’ll hand over the keys to Lance next season.

Exactly what I'd do and what Lynch should do. Defer? Are you kidding me?

But here's the thing .... Anyone who puts even a little bit of stock in advanced statistical analysis, would be scared to death to rest the fate of their football franchise on the shoulders of Mac McCorkle Jones!

And I really do believe this is the kind of stuff that has the fan base up in arms over the idea of mortgaging the future, and really - potentially failing to seize on a golden opportunity that only presents itself once in a generation, if even that.

I have to believe that cooler heads will prevail, and the majority is going to rule this decision. I simply cannot believe that Kyle would overrule the executives and scouts who live, eat, and breath player evaluation.

This type of decision making has the potential to bring down the house. If Kyle pounds the table for Mac Jones, and this thing goes sideways, we are likely to see the kind of upheaval within the organization that is reminiscint of the fall of the Western Roman Empire!

Kyle's a brilliant X's and 0's guy, we know that. But when I hear a statement like that, I really question whether Kyle truly understands the value of draft picks, and first round picks in particular. Yet another reason why he should probably defer these big personnel decisions to the guys who build NFL rosters for a living.

Bosa, Kinlaw and even Sol Thomas could have been Lynch’ picks. Fred Werner may be attributed to Lynch as well. And no doubt Lynch banged the table for Tartt and K Williams.
While many people feed the rumor that there is strife in the FO, I believe that an agreement might have been put in place back in 2017.

  16. Did anyone else catch Trey Lance on the Rich Eisen show? Maybe he was being coy, but he said he hasn't had a zoom meeting with the 49ers since they traded up.

I found this interesting given the timeline of events and what the 49ers have been saying. It is known the 49ers had zoom meetings with Lance prior to the trade. He was also the only one of the three expected to be available that had already held his pro day. At the time of the trade they said they had 3 guys they were comfortable with, and would use the time to see about the 4th and 5th guy. They reiterated this is what they did at the recent presser, and it involved zoom meetings.

If they were using that time to evaluate Lance, why wouldn't they zoom him?

Makes me wonder if Eisen was right earlier in the week when he said he was hearing it is Lance, and that it was always Lance.

Well, I think most fans, even fairly casual fans, realize Kyle is above John whithin the 49ers heirarchy. However, Jed York unquestionably towers over the both of those guys when it comes to having the final say, and it's not hard to envision a scenario where Jed York decided that, it's not just the HOF Safety we are talking about, rather it's the opinions of the entire personnel department collectively, that ought to win the debate if they are unanimously in favor of Lance, right?

    4. As for Pauline's report regarding this entire process ... here is a scenario that I feel like lines up very well with most of the reporting:

Part 1: Kyle enters free agency completely fed up with Jimmy's inability to stay healthy. He's essentially given up on Garoppolo, but he knows that, outside of his QB who simply cannot stay healthy (and I would argue he's also been widely inconsistent post injury) he has one of the most talented rosters in the entire league.

So Jimmy's as good as gone as far as Kyle is concerned, and finding a quality starter becomes a DefCon 1 situation. So he decides the best plan is to aggresively look for a veteran, either a FA, or via a trade, and pair that veteran up with the rising star - Trey Lance, who Kyle and company believe has the highest ceiling, but may need some time to develop by sitting behind a veteran early on, potentially taking over by mid-late season. They bring in a number of veterans, but for whatever reason, they are either unwilling, or unable to sign one.

Now they are in a bit of a pickle, so an emotional Kyle Shanahan convinces Jed York and the rest of his personnel decision makers that their best bet is to throw caution to the wind, and boldly trade all of the way up to 3 in order to secure the young QB who Kyle feels is most ready to start this season, and that guy is Mac Jones, despite the fact that the vast majority of evaluators feel like he also has the lowest ceiling of the big 5 prospects.

      Delete
    5. Part 2: But, Kyle's in the minority with Jones. John Lynch and the majority of his personnel department still want Trey Lance, and are willing to go to the Mat for him. So, in the spirit of teamwork, Kyle agrees to a new plan. He will keep an "open mind" while they convince Fields and Lance to hold additional workouts.

Now Kyle and John are both front and center at these additional workouts that take place 5 days apart. By all accounts, both Fields and Lance absolutely shine, perhaps so much so that they are starting to put even more distance in between themselves and Jones. Yet Kyle, being stubborn Kyle, is sticking with his guy, Mac Jones, and he wasn't budge. On the other hand his personnel staff are now even more convinced that ever, that both Fields and Lance are the superior long term prospects because in their opinion, with a little development, both Fields and Lance will be able to reach Mac Jones level of anticipation and accuracy within the pocket, while also reaching far greater heights due to their superior physical gifts, as well as intangibles.

Push comes to shove, with Kyle on one side, John, Ran, Adam and the rest on the other side, so Jed steps in and makes the final call.

Kyle is not happy, and his anger shows at the press conference, but at the end up the day the me who were hired specifically in order to identify and evaluate the prospects, and on Thursday evening, the 49ers take Trey Lance, and the celebration among the fan base begins!

    6. 49Reasons
I would suggest that your assumption that Jed is the final decision marker, is in fact misplaced!
Mama bear York is in fact the final arbitrator and she has only to make a phone call to her brother for advice. Jedi is then made aware of the families final decision. If you recall, Edward J. made a trip to the bay area to meet with Jed before JL and KS were hired! Do you think it was to just visit his nephew?
That ain't the way it went down, you can take it to the bank.

      Delete
    7. I'm hoping, not suggesting, GEEP. The Jed York prior to a few years ago would have. He's taken a step back these days and he's more or less been hands off since signing ShanaLynch. Then again, I am pretty sure he signed off on the big trade, so he"s definitely Personally invested in this pick in some respects already.

But like I said, it's purely hope at this stage, GEEP. The power of positive thinking.

      Delete
    8. And no, Denise York is not giving Jed York marching orders when it comes to individual personnel decisions. That's completely wrong, GEEP.

      Delete
    9. 49Reasons
Did I say Denise York is giving Jed marching orders when it comes to individual personnel decisions?
NO! I said after the debacle of Jim Tomsula and Chip
Kelly, Eddie DeBartolo paid a visit to Jed. What I am
suggesting is he brought a message from Denise and the York family. Jed's search for a new HC resulted in the hiring of KS and JL. I'm also suggesting that was a "FAMILY DECISION!"
I'm now suggesting, the decision to trade up to draft pick #3 was approved by the DeBartolo family, not just Jed.
I also doubt Denise is involved in who the 9ers draft. as you suggested, she leaves that up to Jed, who is in the loop, but allows KS and JL to make the decisions of who to draft.
In this case, as both you and I know, the move up to
draft pick #3 is a decision that will have a major impact on the 49er franchise for years to come and was a "family decision."

My thinking exactly. BB will decide what JG's trade value is worth. Could another NFL GM, with enough salary to bid against BB, decides he wants JG?

    2. GEEP, did you say Bill Belichick is deciding the trade value for Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers QB?

Wow. So you are say Belichick is dictating the terms? Well at least you being honest that ShanaLynch have played this so poorly that they've allowed a competitor to dictate the trade of the their one time franchise QB. That's an astonishing indictment of ShanaLynch!

      Delete
    3. But I tend to agree. The 49ers have botched the process of pump up the value of a player they plan to trade. That's not good football sense. The 49ers should have maximized Jimmy value of possible, not give Belichick the power to dictate the value.

      Crazy times!

      Delete
    4. 49Reason
Yes, BB is deciding JG's trade value, but it's hardly
an indictment of KS or JL. If BB and the Patriots make
the 9ers an offer for JG, and the 9ers accept BB's offer, by definition, they've set his market value!
If another GM, besides BB, with enough cap space to bed against BB, then that's a win for the 9ers, JL and KS. And if we're to believe the talking heads, that may in fact happen.
At this point, I believe JG would waive him no trade clause if BB made a trade offer and I believe the 9ers would accept the Patriots 2nd Rd. draft pick #46.

(9:45 PM ET on PFN’s Draft Insiders) Over the last 24 hours, I’m told that Kyle Shanahan is coming off his staunch stance on Mac Jones – and it seems that the scouting department is at least bending his ear to listen to why Trey Lance should be the pick.

As I mentioned last week in a previous article, the coach, Shanahan, is driving the draft process. And as we see, he will get his quarterback no matter the price.

Of course he may surprise everyone in turning Max Jones into something most people think he isn't. But boy, those a are tough odds when you look at the success rate of top 10 QB picks, and trade up into the top 10 QB picks. The odds will be seriously stacked against Kyle preserving his reputation, and considering this was entirely uneccessary, not having history on your side is a tough spot to be, and potentially a very tough pill to swallow!

  23. Are any of the big 3 (Lance, Fields and Jones) guaranteed to be perennial winners?
Lance is lesser on the three with accuracy. Fields takes the most time out of the three to release the pass. Jones’ big flaw (to many people) is that he isn’t athletic enough and a past off field DUI that some hold against him.

But to throw out comments pertaining to the Titanic and Shanahan being screwed by local and national media without (if Jones is the pick) Jones not even playing one down in the NFL is a bit over the top.
I can’t judge a player who hasn’t stepped on the field yet.
I’ve said throughout this process that whoever the QB is, will have their ceiling rise incrementally under Shanahan’ tutelage.
That goes for any QB the 49ers draft tomorrow.

"Next, I would go to work ethic. That position requires a different level of work ethic. This league, to make it, requires a different level of work ethic, but that position more than any other. I think you'd better be able to be mentally tough because it's not if, it's when you deal with adversity. While I would like to believe you about Trey Lance, I have to ask...How do you know? You don't.
As we all know, Trey Lance played against Defenses that for the most part, the players could not get on the field at an SEC school. A few, yes, but not the majority of them! That plus the fact he only played one game in 2020. What tape exists for him is 2 years old and exposes he has a problem with staring down his first read receiver and his passes being both inconsistent and accurate. One play he would make a "WOW" play and the next miss a wide open receiver! Can that be fixed with good NFL coaching? Yes, Josh Allen showed us it can, but not in a few months, or possible one year. If the 9ers trade JG, will lance be forced to play?
Of the 3 QB's, Fields, Lance and Jones, Lance will have to make the biggest step up in competition to be the 9ers starting QB! And please, don't quote how good his states were at NDSU, like any QB his stats will mean little when NFL defenses are pressuring him and taking away his go to receiver.
Maybe he'll have no problem playing in the NFL, but until he does, proving he can handle the speed of the NFL and read NFL defenses, not you, nor anyone else knows that he can.
FACT: Lance would not be the first QB that was thought to be a sure thing, but turned out to be a bust. The NFL is littered with examples and yes, that goes for both Files and Jones.

  26. Chris Biderman Sac Bee:

In fact, the top five quarterbacks in passer rating from 2020 are as follows: Rodgers, Watson, Mahomes, Allen and Tannehill. In 2019: Tannehill, Brees, Jackson, Kirk Cousins and Wilson. That’s only two traditional pocket passers in those 10 spots.

Quarterbacks from the last two conference championships rounds: Mahomes and Rodgers (both twice), Allen, Watson, Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo. That’s 75% under the “mobile quarterback” umbrella.

There’s a strong case favoring the trend of athletic quarterbacks, which is the strongest case for Lance or Fields and against Jones.

Big arms hold up better in cold-weather games in the playoffs (which Brees has struggled with). Quarterbacks who can move have a better chance at overcoming poor play and injuries to their offensive line (Wilson and Watson have dealt with this for years). Making plays on the move can be the difference in converting a third-and-6 in a playoff game and having the season end in disappointing fashion, like Super Bowl LIV for San Francisco, when Garoppolo was unable to keep the chains moving in the fourth quarter.

Shanahan was asked about this dynamic and, again, sounded defensive when asked about mobile quarterbacks taking over the league in the context of his decision Thursday.

“I think the whole thing of the success of people like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, Deshaun, Lamar, those guys are unbelievable,” Shanahan said. “They can play the position and are obviously very, very talented and running around and doing stuff. But those are those guys.”

Shanahan noted that good pocket passers would be good no matter which era they played in.

“You’ve got to look into a lot of people. There’s lots of different ways you can do it,” he said. “I don’t look at it as in trends of the league. I look at it as there’s some special players or special people. I don’t care when Drew Brees comes out, whether it’s 30 years from now, 30 years ago, or today. Drew’s going to be pretty good. So was Philip Rivers.”

To Shanahan’s point, not all quarterbacks are created equal. He values the ability to play from the pocket above all else, and in many cases quarterbacks can overcome their athletic deficiencies by outthinking their opponents. Brady has excelled at that, but Brady is also one of the biggest anomalies of all time.

Taking Jones would be a deviation from what’s worked in recent seasons. There hasn’t been an influx of capable pocket passers in years. Brady, Cousins, Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger, Brees and Rivers are aging out of the league while more athletic quarterbacks are taking over. Just about every successful quarterback under the age of 30 can make plays on the move as defenses continue to get more athletic.

NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah said it the best in a conference call last week when asked about pairing a playmaking quarterback with an elite play-caller.

“I think you’re going to see it with Stafford in a great system with an elite quarterback. You’ve seen it with Mahomes with Andy Reid. When you pair those up — an elite play-caller and a good quarterback, you can win a Super Bowl. An elite player and an elite play-caller, you can become a dynasty,” Jeremiah said.

There’s the rub. A less-athletic quarterback shrinks the margin for error. And even Brees, one of the most accomplished quarterbacks ever, won just a single Super Bowl in 20 seasons. Shanahan and Lynch might not be afforded that much time.

You do know that the Missouri Valley Conference is NOT the SEC? That NDSU football is an FCS program, not an FBS program, right? https://jamesmadison.rivals.com/news/an-early-look-at-jmu-s-2021-nfl-draft-prospects
James Madison has produced NFL Draft picks in each of the last two years. Quarterback Ben DiNucci was a seventh-round choice of the Dallas Cowboys this past weekend and cornerback Jimmy Moreland was a seventh-round selection of the Washington Redskins last year to end a run of five consecutive years without a JMU product being selected during the NFL Draft. The last before Moreland was offensive lineman Earl Watford, a 2013 fourth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals, who just completed his seventh season in the league and is currently a free agent!
I rest my case, that the majority of players NDSU QB

A few people here have highlighted Shanahan’ (supposed) disconnect with Lynch and even used last Monday’s presser to justify their argument.

I honestly can’t recall a draft during my decades of 49ers fan-hood where a draft was under such scrutiny and judgment.

At this point, the safest thing for the 49ers to do might be to draft Kyle Pitts. Maybe this is the best way to quell the furious group of fans who can’t agree on which QB the 49ers should pick and have come to believe that they know who better fits Shanahan’ offense.

It’s time to take a deep breath and do as John Lynch said, trust the process.

My question to many of you who say they will unfollow the 49ers if they choose Jones, is this... what if the 49ers win a SB with Jones at the helm. What will your reaction be?

    1. Yes with Wilson i dont have a issue.
Jones will not win a SB with us.
and im still convinced he will not be the pick.
OldCoach if Jones can start than Lance and Fields definitely can start.
And for sure Lance cuz of his toughness and football IQ.

  41. If the 49ers draft Fields or Lance I believe they will hang onto JG for at least half of the season. If they draft Jones I believe they will trade JG tonight. I would be over the moon if they can get a 2nd round pick for him. If they get Fields or Lance I would like to see them use either player like the Saints used Taysom Hill. I would hate to be a DC who had to prepare for a Shanny/JG offense and at the same time have to prepare for a Shanny/Lance offense.

  42. Coach,
    Agree on your points.
Harbaugh would bring in Kaep on occasion to replace Smith on some plays to cross up the defense. But Kaepernick was used more as a runner than a passer.

  44. Whenever a hc is driving a draft all reasoning goes out the window. It's a recipe for disaster.

  45. Allright keep up the good job Razor And Scooter.

And now probably the point that John Lynch and Adam Peters told to Kyle Shanahan:

NFL personnel evaluator 1: “The problem with going No. 3, if that’s what happens, then the expectation level is that he’s a Pro Bowler and he’s going to get you to a Super Bowl. I would think that he can be a functional starter. I don’t personally think that he has that kind of raw talent to be a top-10 quarterback. I think he’d be more of a middle tier. If he does go to the 49ers and the Shanahan system, that’s really going to help him because they believe in running the ball and they believe in play-action passes, so they can take some of the burden off of him. But I would say that on the high side that he’s going to be a top 10-20 quarterback in the league and will probably end up being 15-25. I think he’ll end up being able to be serviceable but I don’t see an elite talent there myself.”

  46. So, you don’t believe that Bill Walsh had a strong voice during drafts?

    1. Not every HC is a Bill Walsh or a Bill Belicheat

    2. I doubt Bill Walsh would have said something a nonsensical as "if you were happy with a certain QB at 12, you should be happy with him at 3", seemingly completely oblivious to the logic that you can't equate drafting a QB at your original draft position outside the top 10 (12), to trading THREE 1st round picks AND a 3rd round pick (essentially multiplying the risk 10 fold) in order to move all of the way up to 3.

Talk about an idiotic statement. That statement alone tells me Kyle is out of his depth and in way over his head trying to play the entire roll - Head Coach / GM / Head Scout / Director Player Personnel, of the 49ers management!

  47. Driving means running the show. Strong voices are fine. Btw, Shanny is no Bill Walsh. He might be if he drafts the next Joe Montana. Tbd...

    ReplyDelete
  48. Per 49ers.com
Sure enough, with the 82nd selection of the third round, Walsh showed his genius by selecting Joe Montana out of Notre Dame. After selecting Montana, Walsh remarked delightedly, "Yes, that's the guy we wanted.”

I trust Shanahan with getting the guy he wants. I never inferred that Shanahan is Walsh, but just like Walsh, Shanahan knows which QB can drive his offense.
I’m comfortable in defering the QB position to Shanahan. Regardless of who the QB is tonight.

  49. Alright, I'm home and on my PC. FYI, I tossed my phone out of frustration earlier guys, and I severely cracked the screen, so pardon me if I'm not exactly in a great mood right now.

But come on, with all due respect AES, REALLY?

    Let's see -

    Brian Hoyer
    CJ Beathard
    Nick Mullens
    Josh Rosen
    Nate Sudfeld
A love affair with KIRK COUSINS, perhaps the most average NFL starting QB we have ever seen.

That's the Kyle Shanahan you trust to evaluate talent, as opposed to his team of personnel evaluators and scouts who actually make a living spending 14 hours a day scouting and evaluating NFL plyers?

    OK man, whatever dude.

    1. Except for Beathard, none of the QBs you listed were drafted and were never viewed as long term answers.
Garoppolo WAS viewed as the long term QB and his overall winning record as a 49ers backs that up. Garoppolo’ injuries have made him replaceable not his performance.
      Numbers don’t lie, dude.

  50. 49Reasons and Bill Walsh evolved when he traded for Steve Young cant say this from KS or he shows suddenly guts and a strike of genius and draft Trey Lance

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep, and remember Robber, there were serious question about STEVE YOUNG as a POCKET PASSER, before Bill Walsh made that trade. In fact, Steve (1st overall pick of the 1984 supplemental draft) was being talked about as a bust up until that point. Bill made that trade because, in his genius, he could could see the things Steve Young could bring to his schemes in terms of expanding his playbook, allowing him to continue to evolve his West Coast scheme.

  51. Shanny picked Hoyer and Beathard over Mahomes and Watson in the hope of getting Cousins. I think we've seen enough of guys Shanny wants, ESPECIALLY when your front office and scouts are pointing to another guy.

  58. People keep saying that KS passed on Mahomes and Watson to draft Beathard, thats BS. He passed on Mahomes and Watson to draft S. Thomas and there were quite a few around here who thought that was a great choice.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yep, and that no doubt was a JL pick.

KS seemed fairly certain that he would get Cousins, so Beathard was never viewed as more than a backup, unless he proved himself under fire (which he didn't).

    2. I thought he was a great pick, but I'm not the genius.

  60. As great as Aaron Rodgers is, should the team trade for him if he does become available. He's 37. I know QBs tend to have a longer shelf life, but he's probably got two or three years at best. I think I would say no in the absence of any other information, particularly since the 49ers don't have 1st round picks next year or the year after.
