    1. The more so dig into the data, the more I feel like taking Mac Jones over Justin Fields would be a collosal mistake from an X's and O's standpoint. Unfortunately, I also feel like it will be collosal PR
mistake for the Niners as well.

The Ringer just posted the best article I've read yet, in regards to Fields inexplicable falling stock in the lead-
      up to the draft.

By every single metric I've found, Justin Fields is the 2nd best QB draft prospect, and frankly, it's not even close.

BTW, that's not a dig on Jones (or Wilson), that's me simply understanding the difference between these 2 QB prospects. I highly recommend ever Niners fan to go a read The Ringer's article titled: "The ugly narratives surrounding Justin Fields' tumbling draft stock"

    2. It just can't be Jones at #3, and GEEP, I am feeling more optimistic that ShanaLynch will get this one right.

(I'll take Lance as a consolation. That's the only other pick I can live with right now)

    3. Among the data highlights: contrary to the bogus, popular belief, Justin Fields actually came off his first read, and threw to his secondary receivers at a higher percentage than Jones, Lance, Wilson, and even Lawrence.

Justin Fields did this on over 19% of his pass plays, besting Lawrence (17%), Lance (6.5%) Wilson (14%), and Jones (10%). The article also highlights Fields incredible ability to recall (memorize plays), but also the ability to "flip" those plays in his head, while maintaining his incredibly accurate recall ability.

      Delete
    4. Oops, *correction: Lance did it on 16.5% of his pass plays, which was the 3rd most of the big 5. Jones, who I've stated my belief that he falls a part under pressure, also lagged behind the group at 10%. And we already know Jones to snaps from undercenter at the lowest percentage as well.

    5. Apparently I'm stuck in perpetual motion like a broken record, because I simply cannot wrap my head around taking Mac Jones over Justin Fields.

No offense to Mac, and I get that idea that he's cheaper than Garoppolo, but he's the same guy, only without the beautiful, compact delivery. That said, in actuality THREE first picks in exchange for Mac Jones doesn't make him a cheaper option than Jimmy G, and I hope fans understand that.

What's more, I can't watch the draft at home this year for fear of driving my fist through my beautiful TV!

      For real!

  3. Here's a lengthy review of Justin Fields. Although the first part of the article seems somewhat lame, keep reading or skip down because this guy seems to do a pretty thorough review.

At the end he mentions that when Fields is in the grasp of defenders he has a tendency to throw the ball up for grabs. Is this opinion shared by others here who have reviewed Fields. That tendency, imo, has really hurt Jameis Winston and I don't think we would want to see that in a 49ers QB. But it's also probably pretty easy to coach just like sliding after a QB runs.

    1. For mine it is also his last observation that is my biggest concern, but not the throwing it up for grabs (that didn't happen much) - the point he makes about feel in the pocket and sometimes missing pressure incoming. I saw it too often for my liking. Makes me think he is more a see it than sense it guy in the pocket.

      Delete
    2. If you can't coach Fields' skillset into a franchise player then you're probably not the whisperer everyone thought you were.

      Delete
    3. Hmmm, not sure I agree with that. Some things you can't really teach, and can be hard to work around. Lack of feel in the pocket is one, especially for an offensive scheme that relies on pocket passing.

Not saying that Fields is sorely lacking in this area or that it will be an issue for him in the NFL, but just something I have noticed watching his college film.

      Delete
    4. You can't teach his athletic traits, and there's plenty examples of him sliding in the pocket thanks to the porous offensive line he played behind. What I'm saying is that no prospect is perfect but Fields is pretty freaking close. I like his floor better than Jones' ceiling.

      Delete
    5. Teach and develop that pocket awareness. What the hell are we paying him for?

      Delete
    6. Sure, I get that.

But tbh this is one of the key reasons I prefer Lance to Fields. Lance shows excellent pocket movement and awareness.

      Delete
    7. Exactly. Teac and develop that accuracy with Lance. I'll take Lance's floor over Jones' ceiling. I would harp on that everyday at the draft table. Why are we paying all this money to this staff? Let's get the highest ceiling player and coach him to greatness.

      Delete
    8. One concern I have with Fields is the Ohio St. offensive scheme that encouraged the one read pass.
If Fields carries that habit into the pro game that is going to slow down his progress. In order for Fields to succeed in the pros he cannot lock onto the first read.

The last thing I want to see is Justin habitually fleeing the pocket when his first read breakdown.
We saw this happen to our previous athletic QB not long ago.

      Delete
    9. Big difference, AES is Fields has a desire to master the cerebral aspects of the position whereas, Kaepernick didn't.

  4. Charles Woodson on Rodgers and The Packers: "This could be a situation where -- before you know it -- someone makes some kind of play or offer and Green Bay can't refuse. They'll say 'hey, we'll go our separate ways and he wants to be somewhere else and we'll move on with the future of this team.'"

I hope we're in on this. Pick 3 for Rodgers and Garoppolo. Take Mills further down. (Have to give Grant credit for raising this idea, although he called it fantasy and Lowell opined it would never happen. But as Tomsula once say, "Why not?")

  5. The 10 yrd splits is a good measure for quickness and explosiveness.
But that trait can be nullified by a good Olineman with quick feet and hands.
Our own Solomon Thomas was an example of how a good OL player could stunt his speed.

I believe that the combination of quickness, strength and technique are a recipe for success as an Edge. But another factor that comes into play is that of having other great players on the defensive front.

Aldon Smith had a great rookie season, but he benefited from having Justin “Cowboy “ Smith next to him.
A great Edge (like a great QB) still needs great talent around him to succeed.

    2. The last quarterback the Rams, Cardinals and Seahawks want to see us draft is Justin Fields.

      Delete
    3. Razor i think they would fear Trey Lance the most cuz the combination how he moves fluid in the pocket and how he chances ball trajectory.
Justin Fields has a good arm but the way he moves i dont like it its pretty evident,Trey Lance moves much more naturaly in the pocket and that's not coachable

      Delete
    4. Since when is moving in the pocket not coachable?

I have no problem with Lance after Allen proved accuracy can be improved.

      Delete
    5. Staying calm and knowing to dtay or leave the pocket is more of a natural thing. For this has Trey Lance ice cold vains.

Still sure he is the pick cuz just after concluding Wilson and Lance prodays we moved up.

      Delete
    6. Lance utilizes his mobility skills without leaning on them, unlike, IMHO, Fields. I really hope Lance is the guy cuz that's what makes Lance special unlike Fields.
IMO Lance has the bigger football IQ also and he has a natural toughness and preparation.

  10. Interesting Tweet from Daniel Jeremiah, covering something a few people on this blog have said re OL.

"Interesting cha with DL coach today. We were discussing building an OL. This was our big takeaway- More important how good your worst guy is than how great your best guy is. Defenses attack your worst guy every week. You can improve your worst starters with 2nd & 3rd rd picks."

Something we really saw last year with the interior compromised.

  11. How important do you guys think Scangerello is? On the plus side, he helped get Jimmy ready for the end of 2017. On the minus side, he was instrumental in signing Mullens who didn't seem to improve. Not necesarily Scangerello's fault, but I'm wondering if we should have confidence in him working with the rookie.

    1. Jimmy played well under him. Without? Maybe not so much. Mullens? He turned a noodle armed udfa into serviceable backup. I mean I might have more confidence in him to do it than Shanny if I'm being honest. They obviously have confidence in him by not only bringing him back, but moving on Sudfeld on his recommendation, plus the timing in moving up for a rookie quarterback coinciding with his return is a bit of a confidence endorsement by the organization as well.

Random draft quote from an experienced top evaluator: “This draft is unprecedented in its sheer number of really good slot WRs.” Last year’s WR class was deep, but more outside guys. This year, it’s top inside guys.

    1. There are a lot of them, that's for sure. I really hope Elijah Moore makes it to #43...

      Delete
    2. Slot wr over edge? Nah, I'm going edge at the top of round 2 unless I get a nice trade offer. I think round 5 would be the sweet spot for slot. I agree Moore is the top slot but to me he's a luxury pick there in round 2.

      Delete
    3. BPA. If Moore is there at 43 I suspect he will be a better prospect than the top edge available.

      Delete
    4. Phillips, Oweh, or Rousseau. Got a feeling one of them will be there.

Dazz Newsome might be their target in round 5.

      Delete
    5. I would take Moore over all three of those edge players. Even Phillips, but only because of the injury concerns.

Newsome looks a decent role player that could find a niche as #3/ #4 WR. But Moore looks like a top tier WR prospect to me.

      Delete
    6. If he's that thought of he probably won't be there.

      Delete
    7. He is getting some first round buzz, but this is why I had him in my list of guys that I think are much better than the consensus think. I believe he is an elite prospect, but his size has people thinking he is a slot only option (which I disagree with) and as a result he isn't thought of as highly as he should be, imo.

      Delete
    8. Maybe that urinating like a dog TD celebration in the Egg Bowl that cost them the game comes back to bite him. If he's there at #35 are you trading up for him?

      Delete
    9. I would definitely think about it. As much as I like Deebo, he isn't great as a downfield threat. Very much more a guy that needs to be schemed touches. Aiyuk is really the only WR I trust to win consistently. Moore would provide a second guy that can win consistently without needing scheme to help him. Plus he has excellent hands, is a deep threat and is tough. And like Deebo and Aiyuk, he is dangerous with ball in hand.

It would give the team three good WRs alongside Kittle. What a great way to help your rookie QB.

      Delete
    10. Not sure he's convinced me he's an outside receiver. I didn't see him winning too many contested catches downfield. If you're looking for a downfield outside receiver I would think Darby could be your guy on day 3. Probably the best downfield ball trackers in the class.

  13. Posey over at NN wrote an article on a report that the 49ers offered a first-round pick for Sam Darnold earlier in the offseason. He also notes that the narrative regarding Jimmy G from his teammates is starting to change.

"On Wednesday, Juszczyk said he’d support whichever quarterback the 49ers start this season.

I’ve seen Fred Warner and Javon Kinlaw like posts of Justin Fields on Instagram in the past week."

If you're wondering why the Jets ultimately accepted less for Darnold, the reason appears to be timing.

"If you’re sold on Wilson in New York’s case, trading your only option at QB before his physical would have been dangerous. You have to think worst-case scenario, and that would have been Wilson failing his physical to some degree."

    1. Lmao, you really buying they offered a 1st round pick for Darnold? He's asking me to believe the front office is that stupid. If they take Jones I would take that as circumstantial evidence to support that allegation.

      Delete
    2. Posey is not one usually given to hyperbole. It's an unconfirmed report, of course, but what isn't this time of year.

      Delete
    3. The thing that really interested me about Posey's article is the insinuation that Jimmy is likely gone. Here's a quote from John Middlekauf;

Q: You mentioned Garoppolo. How do you think this will play out? Will Garoppolo be the starter in Week 1?

Middlekauff: It depends on who they take. If they take Mac Jones or Justin fields, Jimmy’s got to go. You don’t draft Mack Jones and have him sit behind Jimmy Garoppolo; they’re the same player.

Justin Fields is a two-year starter at Ohio State. If I draft Justin Fields, Jimmy’s got to go the next day. It doesn’t make any sense to draft a bluechip 5-star guy from Ohio State, a multiple-year starter, and then have Jimmy around.

Now, even Trey Lance? I would get rid of Jimmy no matter what. Because the best benefit for these quarterbacks is their rookie contract, and the clock starts the moment you pick them. Even if you got to go through some growing pains with Trey Lance, which will probably be the most, I can live with it because you really benefit in a couple of years.

But with Justin Fields, he’s ready to roll right now. Now, obviously, you have to work on stuff, and he’s going to improve, but I think it depends on the selection. There would be a lot of pressure if they drafted the Justin Fields from the fans, that they don’t want to watch Garoppolo anymore, let’s get the rookie in there.

    4. Like I said, Cubus if they pick Jones that will confirm they really might have been dumb enough to offer a 1st for Darnold in my mind. Until then, I'm calling BS!

      Delete
    5. There have been lots of reports that the 49ers offered picks for QBs this offseason. Not sure how valid any of them are.

I can believe they made an offer for Darnold. I can even believe they offered a 1st, but my guess is it would be a future 1st. They clearly have made up their mind that JG isn't the guy, and probably figured they could recoup and more whatever they paid for Darnold.

But just because there are a few reports out there saying they offered a 1st doesn't convince me it actually happened.

      Delete
    6. To be clear, I never said I believed it. Just posting it along with the thousands of other reports and rumors. As I said what really interested me in Posey's writeup is what happens to Jimmy G. This all goes back to my question of who backs up the rookie if Jimmy is gone. If we assume the rookie is Lance or Fields, then a similar "mobile" backup is not currently on the team

    7. Cubus, did you forget about Johnson?

    1. Lawrence.
    2. Fields.
    3. Wilson.
    4. Lance.
    5. Jones.

    On Fields, he writes:
"The narrative that Fields can’t read defenses or go through his progressions is overblown. Can he get through them a little quicker? Sure. But he’s an aggressive downfield passer and fortune favors the bold. Also, the Ohio State offense gets unfairly criticized for being gimmicky when in reality, under head coach Ryan Day, it looks a lot more like a modern NFL offense than most colleges. Fields’ accuracy, ability to protect the ball (only 18 turnover-worthy plays in his career, according to Pro Football Focus) combined with his high-end athleticism gives him a high floor and high ceiling."
