Throwing Jimmy Under The Bridge?

 March 1

This is a bridge too far:

Teams have called the Panthers about Teddy Bridgewater, including the 49ers. But he might be needed ... in Carolina.

**Update**
Cardinals shock the NFC West by adding Watts

  1. I like Teddy, but I don't see him as a viable upgrade. Bridgewater as only a few years removed from a serious leg injury and that would certainly give me pause.

Sorry to jump topic, but the Watt to Cards signing has major implications for the 49ers imo.
Will the 49ers now need to resign Williams at a higher price as well as draft a top OL player with their #12 pick?
The ripple effect of the Watt signing will be felt in the 49ers FO no doubt.

    1. If, Watt can make it through a season but I don't really believe he scares anyone like he used to.

    2. He doesn't scare anyone like a Defensive Player of the Year would, but he is plenty scary. He was double-teamed 30% of the time as an edge rusher last year, which was the most in the NFL. This shows that teams are still plenty worried about Watt. Even though he was double-teamed the most in the NFL, he still finished 8th in the NFL in pass rush win rate (and was 6th in run defense win rate). So he offers plenty of ability still. And as AES notes, combine him with Chandler Jones and this looks every bit as strong as Bosa/Ford in 2019.

    3. Pot...Kettle, I saw that. It's a roll of the dice. The Cardinals are well over the cap now. No chance of signing, Peterson or Reddick now.

    4. AES,
I think Teddy is being seen as a backup with upside not as a replacement.

  2. I agree that JJ is not the same player of a few ago, but a combination of him and Chandler Jones suddenly makes them a very formidable defense.
Watt still needs to be accounted for even though he's lost some luster.

Also, I believe that the Watt signing is beneficial to Trent Williams in that a higher contract price could be justified.
Or, it could work in the opposite direction in which the 49ers let Williams walk is he comes in with a larger offer that the 49ers can't afford.

In any case, things just got a little more interesting in this 49ers off season.

    1. Yea, this is one of the more intriguing drafts coming up, along with all the qb movement and salary cap machinations; this season looks to be very interesting indeed.

    2. For mine, with where Watt is at in his career, he's more a final piece of the puzzle sort of guy, not a part of a dynamic duo for a defense.

    3. As to Watt, he will improve that defense no doubt. Is he what he was no, but that is not really the question. The question is does he improve that defense? The answer is most certainly yes. Any time you can add a guy that is top 10 in pass rush win rate in todays NFL... he will improve the defense.

  3. Snippets from this morning's Kyle Posey comments about the Bridgewater news:

Citing Sports Info Solutions total points earned stat, Dalton earned 28 points this past season. Bridgewater earned 71. I’m not here to pretend that Teddy is a game-changer. He’s not. Bridgewater’s lack of arm strength really limits what you can do as a play-caller. Where Teddy excels at is knowing to go with the football and being able to manage the pocket when it breaks down.

In that sense, it’s easy to see why Shanahan would look at Bridgewater as a fit. Plus, he’s an underrated runner. Bridgewater can get out of the pocket and use his legs when the pocket collapses.

In this scenario, it’s hard to envision the Niners keeping both Teddy and Jimmy Garoppolo. Bridgewater signed a $63 million contract last offseason. Trading Bridgewater would leave $10 million in dead money on the Panther’s cap since that’s Teddy’s guaranteed salary for 2021. That would mean the 49ers would hypothetically owe Bridgewater around $17.9 million for this upcoming season, then Bridgewater wouldn’t have any guarantees in his contract for ‘22. Of course, San Francisco could restructure Bridgewater’s contract, but that’d be the only logical way to have Bridgewater on the roster.

Do the Niners reaching out to Carolina mean they’re thinking about releasing/trading Garoppolo, and Teddy serves as the backup for a rookie QB? Did Kyle watch Bridgewater last season and think he can get the same production as a healthy Garoppolo, just for $8 million less? Would they keep Jimmy and restructure Teddy’s deal?

Trading for Bridgewater, who I’d imagine would cost nothing more than a conditional or Day 3 draft pick, would certainly qualify as a reboot.

Saving $7-$8 million would mean the Niners window is a week or so from this report to get this deal done. Why? Because that money would be used to sign another free agent. That would be part of the reason you make this move, to add a quality free agent. In that sense, the 49ers would have to pull the trigger soon. Buckle up.

    1. I find it hard to believe this one holds much water.

    2. Yeah this one doesn't make a lot of sense for either side. It comes from "league sources" and some guy named Dan Sileo who reported it first.

    3. Dan Sileo had Stafford to the 49ers, as well as the Colts, Fins, etc etc.

He throws so much BS at the wall, its ridiculous, he just will ride high on one that sticks (if it ever does).
