Through three weeks, the San Francisco 49ers have two of the top 6 and three of the top 13 offensive linemen in the league in pressure rate allowed, per Next Gen Stats: No. 1 -- C Jake Brendel - 0% T-No. 6 -- RG Dominick Puni - 2.2% No. 13 -- LT Trent Williams - 3.7%
I never had any doubts about this offensive line or the philosophy behind them, but will it be enough to silence the yearly hand wringing by the opposing viewers? Remains to be seen if they'll be able to keep it going against the Broncos, and it might have gotten more difficult with the loss of Mike Evans, who softens up the middle of the field for CMC and Kittle at the X position.

Honestly, not for me. Except for the Rams game, the 49ers have beaten team's that they were supposed to beat.
Are the OL stats encouraging? Yes, If you only count 3 games into the season. As someone once said, "you're only as good as you're last game." Sustainability over the season is what matters for me. But, for now, I would say to the OL, keep up the good work.
Dominick Puni has an 87.7 pass block grade so far this season, highest of any guard in the NFL who has started all three games. He has allowed just two QB pressures (hurries) through three weeks.

ReplyDeleteYou can get an idea by the designation. Day to day indicates a grade-1 intercostal muscle sprain. A week-to-week designation would indicate grade -2.

The former All-Pro came out of retirement to join the loaded Rams defense, The Sunday Night crew was excited to talk about his return and had all their hyped up segments about it.
But they forgot that Donald was retired for two years and is now 35 y/o and would be lining up against Broncos All-Pro guard Quinn Meinerz. Not only did Meinerz rain on Aaron Donald’s parade, he tossed him around and dominated Donald in the trenches.
After Meinerz ruined Donald’s return and this moment went viral, the league decided to gift the Broncos All-Pro guard with a surprise drug test on Monday morning. Was it just a coincidence?

Things can change in a hurry in the NFL but as of right now, the Rams are paper champions not worth the paper it was printed on.

DeleteIf the season ended today, I would absolutely agree with you. I don't take any pleasure saying this, but the Rams are to good and well coached to somehow fade out of the picture. They have the players and the coaching to run off 8-10 wins in a row. This division is going to be dog fight to the end of the season. Heck, Arizona might give the 49ers a tough fight the second time around.

ReplyDeleteWhile I agree with you, the point was all the hype has turned out to be just that HYPE! They had a lot of talking head crowning them the SB campions, then the 9ers kicked the Rams butt (color me smiling), and now Denver's and all pro guard Quinn Meinerz, made the Donald look like a has been....At least for now...
We are unable to justify the hype after 3 games. If Garrett and Donald haven't proved the hype is worthy by the end of the season, then the hype will be overkill. For me at this point, there's still a whole lot of football yet to play.
