DeleteEPA/play is, IMO, the best metric by which to judge whether a team/offense/defense is good.
ReplyDeleteHistorically, we've ranked defenses by "YPG allowed" or "PPG allowed" (scoring defense).
Those 2 metrics fail to consider the ways the offense impacts them- starting field position, number of possessions, quality of yards*.
EPA/play is a rate stat, not a counting stat, so those problems are eliminated.
It measures how well the defense does in the specific situations it's in.
*It knows that a defense allowing 4 yards on a 3rd and 1 is WAY more damaging than allowing 4 yards on a 3rd and 10.
(The same is true for offense, the opposite way.)
LT Alaric Jackson was arrested early Tuesday morning on suspicion of felony domestic violence.

Whether it's Taylor Decker or Jackson at LT, Bosa will have a great opportunity to put Stafford on his back.
I only hope he can stay healthy and have his first great season since signing for huge money.
