PREDICTED FREE AGENCY MOVES FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the San Francisco 49ers.
Instead, it was a year that showed the Super Bowl window is far from closed for the team. Despite injuries to several key starters, which tested the team’s depth, the 49ers finished the season with a 13-5 record and were one of the last four teams standing in the NFC.
Pretty impressive for a team that was supposedly in a rebuild.
However, this season also showed that the front office has some work to do to increase the team’s chances of not only getting back to the Super Bowl but winning it as well.
One area where the work can be done is through free agency.
Here are some potential free agent signings the 49ers could end up making to get back to the big game.

WR Romeo Doubs
You ask most fans who they want to address the wide receiver room, and names like Alec Pierce and Jauan Jennings will immediately be mentioned.
While they are good options, they will most likely be out of the price range for the 49ers.
Romeo Doubs, however, would not be.
Doubs offers what the 49ers want in their wide receivers: a good separator who is a YAC merchant, a strong route runner who excels at the contested catch, and, most importantly, a willing blocker.
Doubs is also capable of playing on the outside or in the slot, which would add further versatility to Shanahan’s offense.
He would be an excellent WR2/WR3 signing.

TE Isaiah Likely
Jake Tonges is a restricted free agent and will most likely be back in 2026.  However, he will have a difficult time filling in for George Kittle, who is expected to be out for most of the 2026 season.
Enter Isaiah Likely.
Likely had always played second fiddle at the TE position with the Ravens.  When his number was called, Likely proved to be an effective playmaker, averaging no less than 10.4 YPC and showcasing his ability to block in space.
Would Likely replace Kittle in the lineup?  No, but after a down season, Likely’s stock has been depressed, so his cost should not be that high.
Adding Likely would provide Brock Purdy with a versatile chess piece on the field who could still be utilized even when Kittle returns from his injury.

G Teven Jenkins
While a center would probably be the better option, the best free agent options are likely to stay with their respective teams, so addressing the next biggest weakness on the offensive line would make sense for the 49ers.
The left guard position has been a revolving door with the 49ers for some time now.
Signing Teven Jenkins could help shut that door.
According to PFF, Jenkins finished being rated as the 8th-best player at his position.
While there is a concern regarding his injury history, there is no denying the impact Jenkins brings when he is playing.

DE A.J. Epenesa
One area the 49ers were repeatedly exposed at was the lack of quality depth on the defensive line.
The 49ers can address this by bringing in A.J. Epenesa.
Epenesa was a solid run defender during his time with the Buffalo Bills, and although his sack numbers are unimpressive, he brings the ability to help make a QB’s life in the pocket uncomfortable.
He’s also capable of kicking inside when needed, which would allow whoever the new 49ers DC will be to get creative with the way Epenesa is utilized.

S Coby Bryant
The 49ers appear set at strong safety with Malik Mustapha for the foreseeable future.
The free safety position is another matter entirely.
Ji’Ayir Brown mostly manned the position in 2025, but missed tackles and inconsistency led to a demotion, and his replacement, Marques Sigle, did not fare much better, though the latter was in his rookie season.
However, it is apparent that the 49ers need to get better at the position, and adding Coby Bryant would do just that.
A certified ball hawk with seven interceptions during the last two seasons, Bryant also brings the pedigree of a physical enforcer against the pass and run.
Pairing Coby Bryant with strong safety Malik Mustapha could be the missing piece needed to take the 49ers' secondary to the next level.

These are the moves I predict the 49ers will make this offseason.  Do you agree with me, or is there a move that you feel makes more sense?  Comment on what you think below.

  2. I really like Likely (no pun intended) I have a few more FAs that I like and most of them won't break the bank. RBs Travis Etienne Jacksonville Breece Hall NYj Both are versatile with decent break away speed but with the 49ers luck in the past with UDFAs RB they won't likely sign a FA RB. Alontae Taylor CB N.O. K'Lauon Chaisson DE N.E. Issac Seumalo G Pitt. Marcus Mariota QB (KSs next reclamation project fills the #2 spot while Kurtis Rourke gets his feet wet.)

    1. I considered the 49ers adding a RB, but I think there are enough issues elsewhere that will cause the front office to address the position with another draft pick or trade. I also though about including a free agent CB, but everything I have seen and read indicates the 49ers are comfortable with their starting CBs, and Taylor is probably going to be starter somewhere.

    2. I like Etienne a lot and hes a guy that could play similar to CMC as both a runner and receiver. And provide legit insurance should CMC go down.
That said, Im not sure SF would want to allocate that much cap space to the RB position.

    2. Razor,
Not sure if you have mentioned this kid before. But a guy that's been grabbing positive attention recently is OL, Max Iheanachor. A month ago he was being projected as a possible 5th rd pick. After his showing this past week, Todd McShay views him as a "riser" 3rd pick. He is football late comer with about 5yrs of playing. DraftBuzz said that "his ceiling is huge" but will require patience and good coaching.

      Delete
    3. I heard Deiter and Hutch talking about him. Deiter said he asked multiple guys he knows in the league on Offensive Linemen and he said they all mentioned Iheanachor as someone that will go much higher than the boards are showing.

      Delete
    4. Yea, I got Iheanachor at the bottom of Round 1. I saw him execute that Trent Williams signature move where he clubs the guy to the ground.

Nice list Razor Doubs would be a nice add, I think he could give the team a man beater with the upside of explosive plays.
Likely, could be a solid TE that can actually block and isnt useless in the pass game. I dont know much about most of the others.

    1. Thanks Shoup. Jenkins is considered as one of the better young guards in the league right now since his transition over to the left side.
Bryant is currently on the Seahawks' vaunted defense. He could easily take over the free safety position and make the secondary a nightmare match-up.
Epenesa is a guy that I had hoped the 49ers would draft when he came out of college. Even though he hasn't done as well as I thought he could, his skill set is what the team's depth needs.

      Delete
  8. In terms of the FAs outlined here, they could all be useful, and don't think any would break the bank. Maybe Jenkins could be outside what their willing to pay for that position.

49ers will no doubt add some mid tier FAs along these lines.

What I am going to be really interested to see is whether they go out and try and add a top tier talent in FA.

With BA now gone, the only top tier contracts they've given to a young player in recent years that remain on the roster are Purdy and DMo. And I don't really see any of the 2022 or 2023 draft classes getting big extensions. That's not a good sign. Time to add an infusion of young quality.

  9. A lot of the names on your list makes sense Razor.

I would like to add Logan Hall DL from Bucs as a name to watch. Also have a feeling that they might resign Jordan Elliott. He is relatively inexpensive.

On WRs, I think they might be interested in Wandale Robinson although Doubs is more likely.

In other news, DBs coach Bullocks has been let go. Is this indicative of a change in philosophy or is Saleh poaching him? Anyway, good move to look for an upgrade. DB room has declined since Wilks left.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Scooter on this Coach. It's also why I don't see the 49ers going after Hendrickson, Bosa, or any other starting DE in free agency.

      Delete
    4. They could sign Hendrickson to a one year contract easily without any draft capital.

      Delete
    5. That's true Razor, but I'd be surprised if that happens. Hendrickson is going to want to be a starter, and I don't think the 49ers plan to relegate Mykel Williams to a backup role that could risk stunting his growth.

      Delete
    6. Yep, agree with Mid. I feel confident they'll add an edge, but not someone that'll relegate Mykel to a backup. If they go the FA route it will be either a pass rush specialist or a rotational all rounder, if they go draft it will be to complement and rotate with Bosa, Mykel and Huff

      Delete
    7. You guys sound like you're confident Williams will hit the ground running through training camp and ready for full starter reps come week 1.

      Delete
    8. He's expected to be back for TC.

I feel confident they won't want to sign a guy that will relegate Mykel to being a backup. I also feel confident they will want to add more depth at edge.

It is kind of a weird situation though. Bosa, Mykel, Huff, White and Sam O sounds like a pretty full room already. But I think they look at Mykel and White as DE/DT hybrids, so there's room for another pure Edge guy.

      Delete
    9. Even if Williams and Bosa are cleared and meet their landmarks to start week 1 you'd think they'd want to limit their snaps early on.

      Delete
    10. True Razor, but they really didn't do that with McCaffrey. I have a feeling they may limit Mykel and Bosa during the preseason, but then both will full go come the regular season.

      Delete
    11. Even if they want to limit their snaps early on, if they get an elite edge like Crosby or Hendrickson, those guys aren't going to be happy to give up snaps later in the year when Bosa and Mykel are full go.

      Delete
    12. CMC didn't have ACL surgery or any surgery for that matter. He just went to Germany and got that experimental Achilles tendonitis treatment.

      Delete
    13. You might get Hendrickson on a one year prove it deal the way his season ended. He had a back injury which you'd want to fully examine. I think they'll bring in a guy like that and it may not be Hendrickson.

      Delete
    14. Let me put it another way - I'd be surprised if someone of Hendrickson's calibre and reputation would be happy signing somewhere that tells him he'd be the backup when everyone is healthy. And despite the injury last year, I'd be equally surprised if he can't find a robust market and lucrative deal.

Joey Bosa on the other hand, I could see him potentially agreeing to a deal where he's the third guy as part of a rotation.

      Delete
    15. That would work. I'm not sure Hendricks' market will be that robust. Depends on his medicals. No team was willing to trade for him. He's 31 years old too.

      Delete
    16. Hendrickson has played for a miserable franchise as well and winning a SB might play a part in his decision.

      Delete
    17. I'd be surprised if Hendrickson gets less than $20M. He'll be the best edge player available in FA.

No team was willing to trade for him because he was injured. But he's had surgery and he'll have an offseason to recover.

Also doubt they actually double dip at WR, but adding Sarratt and McAlister would provide guys that could replace the skillsets of Jennings and Aiyuk (if they pan out, of course).

    6. The reason for Linderbaum potentially hitting FA is pretty well documented. The 5th year option for him is higher than the highest paid center by more than $5M. And they've not yet been able to settle on a contract, despite the Ravens outlining their desire to keep him. I actually don't think he'll end up hitting FA, but stranger things have happened.

I think the reason I mentioned whether a day 3 center would be elite was pretty obvious. That's what you are comparing him to in Linderbaum.

  20. I wonder how the recent O lines would measure up under the Bobb McKittrick measure. McKittrick believed that long runs were more to do with the RBs ability to get to the next level while consistent 4 to 7 yard runs were more to do with the O line. At the end of the season he looked at each game and didn't count any runs over 20 yards then averaged out all other carries. He considered anything from 3.3 yards a carry to 4 yards a carry as a success. Anything over 4 yards a carry he considered an A grade. I wonder how the 49ers O linemen since they acquired CMC would measure up.

    1. It's an interesting question Coach.

I think in part it can be answered through RB yards before contact. Last year, 49ers were below NFL average in that metric (CMC averaged 2.3 ybc/ attempt, average was 2.5). And well below where they were in 2023 (CMC averaged 3.1 ybc/ attempt).

    1. Ahhh, bit of a misunderstanding there cubus. They paid him his 2025 money. What they've taken away is the guaranteed $ for 2026 option bonus, meaning they can now cut him without owing him that money. So no carryover.

Cutting him doesn't bring the 2026 cap hit down (actually increases the cap amount for 2026), unless they designate it a post June 1 release.

    2. Scooter,
Is there any reason they wouldn't designate him a post June 1 release?

    3. Only reason I can think of is if someone is willing to trade for him. But don't see that happening.

    4. Aiyuk tanked his stock and he tanked our team. Any team giving up anything significant for him would be taking a huge leap of faith. Dudes getting designated for the post June release and will play on a 1 year prove it deal.

    5. Thanks, Scooter. But don't 2026 option bonuses count towards the 2026 cap?

    6. Yes, but that isn't a roll-over/ carryover.

    7. Fair enough. But if approx. $25 million is removed from the 2026 cap hit, then I'm not sure why you would say cutting BA doesn't bring the 2026 cap hit down. Would that be because other future payments are accelerated?

    8. Because the option bonus gets pro-rated over 5 years. He is currently scheduled to count around $16M against the cap. Cutting him accelerates the remaining signing bonus and 2025 option bonus yet to be accounted for under the cap, making his cap hit around $25M, unless they designated it a post June 1 release in which case I believe only around $8M is against the cap this year, the rest in 2027.

RE 2026 salary cap: I understand the 9ers collected ~$7 Mil insurance for Bosa ACL injury. Can / will that roll over to 2026?

    1. Yes I believe so, GEEP. I suspect Aiyuk and Warner will be in the same boat too, so should be a pretty decent chunk of cap credits coming their way.

    1. I think Iheanachor could be our starting LT in 3 years. I'd have him play LG until then.

    3. Two Rd #4 undersized DL players that should impress at the Combine and fit the 9ers D system as rotation players.
      * Zane Durant, Penn St. 6'1" X 295 40 = 4.66s 4 sacks
      * Caden Curry, Ohio St. 6'3" X 260 40 = 4.78s 11 sacks

  30. The 49ers have over $50 million in 2026 salary-cap space, with mechanisms to open more near-term room and again carry over a large chunk into 2027 — even after spending this cycle.

    1. Also don't have many guys they'll definitely look to give big contract upgrades to either this offseason or next. They have money to spend to bring in top shelf talent.
