Week 1 (with Williams):
- 49ers had 7 carries for 43 yards (6.1 YPA) running behind Williams
Week 18 (without Williams):
- 49ers had 5 carries for 14 yards (2.8 YPA) running behind Pleasants
In Week 1:
Purdy was 4-5, 120 yards on throws 20+ yards
In Week 18:
Purdy had 0 attempts of throws 20+ yards
Result of no Pearsall and Williams to create spacing for shots downfield
Week 1 vs. Seattle:
- 50% on third down -> 36 rush attempts
Week 18 vs. Seattle:
- 22% on third down -> 12 rush attempts
The Seahawks' rush defense is Top 5 in all stats (EPA, Success Rate, DVOA, Run Type).
The only areas where there's some weaknesses are defending runs with motions at the snap:
- YPC: #17
- Success rate: #22
- 16% success rate in the redzone against 49ers defense
Since becoming head coach, Niners have played 7 games in which they face a team they played within the last month. Kyle Shanahan is 5-2 in those games. He’s 3-0 when facing a team, a second time within 3 weeks. He'll be 4-0 as I have the 49ers magic continuing, 24-23. Shanahan was very smart in dangling that Warner carrot in front of his team if they can find a way to win this game. Go Niners!
49ers Inactives:
S Ji’Ayir Brown (hamstring)
RB Isaac Guerendo
DT Kevin Givens
DT Sebastian Valdez
T Brandon Parker
WR Jordan Watkins
DE Robert Beal

QB Brock Purdy:
ReplyDelete18 completions on throws 20+ yards downfield in 7 games Ricky Pearsall played
3 completions on throws 20+ yards downfield in 3 games Pearsall missed
Let's just hope Mr glasses knee holds up. I'm teasing.
DeleteAnd I think he's clearly the best wr on the team when healthy but he's had a terrible time staying on the field.
What's strange to me is he talked about protecting from pain... But my understanding was that it should be more if a stability issue?
Anyone here ever hurt their pcl or know more about it?
Pearsall active. CMC messed up his at Buffalo last year when he landed on it. I think Pearsall needs to make the catch and go down. Try to avoid being tackled awkwardly.
DeleteIt’s probably been mentioned here but it’s still worth repeating: Donte Whitner said that if Ricky plays we’ll win in a blowout. I’d love a blowout but would take the win without it.
ReplyDeleteI do like our chances today.... Seattle's run game hasn't flashed that much w all of the hype and Kendrick/Winters will be a nice pair- and West/Collins/Davis seem to be doing better of late w the A-gap. Hopefully, Darnold's injury limits any challenges at Sigle/Mustapha and having TW and Pearsall today makes the difference. Regardless, w the W last week, I am content w the season. Just hope it can continue..... For me, I know Shanny wants to run, but I hope they simply attack the weaknesses- ie, if Safeties come up they gotta challenge over the top.
Delete59% of Purdy's 3rd/4th down pass attempts go for 1st downs this year, the highest rate of any quarterback All-Time as far back as records go.👀
ReplyDeleteThe thing about stats, is that they represent past games. My old high school coach used to say, that you go out there and play your best game and let the stats take care of themselves. That's why I believe in the old Al Davis mantra, "just win, baby!"
DeleteI've got a good feeling about this one. I think the final score will end up looking like it was a tight game, but I just have a feeling the 49ers will be the clearly better team today, and will be pretty comfortable winners.
ReplyDeleteI think we will play much better than the 3-13 loss and it will be a close game, considering how division tilts always end up.
ReplyDeleteMacdonald is a good coach and has the better roster, but Niners have heart and a QB/Coaching advantage.
Go Niners 24-21!
Wow that delay might throw off Darnold given he probably got a Toradol shot. Could wear off sooner than expected.
ReplyDeleteWas thinking exactly the same thing. Timing is important when it comes to those shots.
DeleteIt will be interesting to see how the zombie squad does today.
ReplyDeleteOnce again overmatched... lets hope they can do it again.
FFS. Just can't have that in a game like this.
ReplyDeleteThe crowd will definately be involved now.
DeleteThank you Brock.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrible playcalling sequence from Kyle.
ReplyDelete3rd and a foot just qb sneak it.
Sigh... massive hill to climb now.
ReplyDeleteWorst start imaginable.
ReplyDeleteDid Green just tell Shanahan on the sideline that he was not going back in the field?
ReplyDeleteThis is basically a repeat of week 18 with the only difference being the Seahawks aren't stuffing up at the last moment to keep the 49ers in it.
ReplyDeleteEvery phase of this team has screwed up - special teams, offense and defense.
ReplyDeleteRecalling what Old Coach said not long ago about his fear of the 49ers coming unglued. This may be the time. I fear a rout may be underway.
ReplyDeleteOld Coach, they are all coming unglued, just as you predicted they would do at some point. Too bad, it's tonight., The rout is on.
DeleteThe comeback is on now :D.
ReplyDeleteMariucci hexed them by predicting a huge 49ers comeback today- hopefully, proves prophetic in the end. Lots of time left.
ReplyDeleteSometimes shit happens but it’s not over.
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with Green and Shanahan?
ReplyDeleteA 49er TD before halftime is a critical psychological lift for team. The defense' only job now is to keep Seattle from scoring again. This game is far from over.
ReplyDeleteIt is a long game. We came back against the Lions and Packers in '23.
ReplyDeleteYep, way too early to give up. Stop the bleeding and start accumulating points and this will be a game.
DeleteYep, we are called FAITHFUL for a reason!
DeleteI still believe! Let’s go Niners!
ReplyDelete👍^
ReplyDeleteJust way too many big negative plays this half. Not giving themselves a chance. Have to clean it up to stand any chance in the second half.
ReplyDeleteThe non catch by Pearsall was a big swing in Seattle' favor.
ReplyDeleteSeattle needs to give the 49ers a couple of turnovers in the second half to give the 49ers a shot. But, allowing the Seahawks to score before the half was a downer.
ReplyDeleteFor sure. Also gotta give hats off to the way the Seahawks played that half. Hopefully they can't maintain it.
DeleteYikes, more of the same to start the second half. Getting beat up.
ReplyDeleteSad to see the Niners' season come to an end with a rout like this.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely looking like it's the end now. But still a great season. They did way better than I expected even before the injuries.
DeleteJust too many injuries this year but still one hell of a year. With a year of experience for all the rookies and less injuries, we should have a very good team next year.,
ReplyDeleteKyle dropped the ball with team speed. Possibly the slowest offense in the league. And McCaffrey is predictably gassed in the playoffs again, basically out of gas before week 18! You have to use more than 2 RB for an entire season. That's not rocket science! That's not genius! Where is Jordan James? That's another one! Where is Cowing, Watkins, and James? All supposed to be electric playmakers! What's the deal? Are we just miss-evaluating the position?
ReplyDeleteYou must be popular at parties. What a dummy.
DeleteThis is exactly why I don't give too much attention to stats. You're only as good as your next game, someone once said. It might be a good time to give Mac some snaps.
ReplyDeleteGreat respect and proud of this 49ers team. They fought against all odds and did much more than I thought they would given the injuries. I'm already getting excited for next season.
ReplyDeleteI told my daughter it was the football version of the show we watched a long time ago, "A series of unfortunate events". Looking forward to next season...... they need to get some bullies up front. Anyone but Seattle for the Super Bowl, please.
ReplyDeleteI don't care what anyone says. I don't want to hear about PFF grades. This team will not beat any top 5 defensive teams until they over haul the O line. They need to add an OG, C and swing OT. I really liked how Jordan James looked in the few carries he got. It is going to be a very interesting off season. The first thing they need to do is convince the powers that be that Aiyuk deserted the team and the 49ers should not have to pay him another red cent. That would clear up some cap space so they can sign 2 or 3 B level FAs
ReplyDeleteIt was a great season in a lot of ways. The next man up attitude is as real as can be! Beating Philly on their own turf was unquestionably magical. It's just this severe lack of field-stretching speed was an obvious oversight. That's UNDENIABLE! It didn't need to happen, IMO. I'd really like to understand the thought process about that. Jacob Cowing has a particular skill set, right? He was prolific in college. Watkins looked like a guy who was strong enough to get on the field this season, even if it's late season. How does this guy not get a chance to make an impact? Jordan James was a Frank Gore pick, and Frank's my guy! I love this kids running style. But it has to be a redshirt season for both 4th rounders and a 5th rounder? If your obvious weakness is speed at WR, how do you not get these guys onto the football field?
ReplyDeleteTyler,
DeleteI agree with you they do need a WR who can take the top off the defense but what good does that do you when our QB doesn't have the time to throw the deep ball. Before we go out and spend cap space or draft picks on a speed demon WR lets improve our O line and give the QB time to throw the deep ball
Coach, problem is, it's highly doubtful the coaching staff agrees with you. They clearly like Brendel. They like Puni. They like McKivitz. Williams obviously is the LT as long as he wants to be. The only spot they're realistically going to try and upgrade along the OL is LG.
DeleteI tend to agree on Oline. If Burford leaves in FA as he should, we will probably draft an early round Guard and a possible Swing Tackle/Replacement for Trent Williams.
DeleteFoerster and KS are high on Brendal, McKivitz and Puni.
Scooter,
DeleteWhats the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results. The O line has been a problem for 2 straight years. They look fine versus the weaker Ds in the league then s**t the bed against the better Ds in the league. They just extended McKivitz. They will stick with Williams until he retires. Puni took a huge step back this year but deserves another chance but if Foester thinks than Brendel is the answer at C maybe it is time to look for a replacement for Foester. They will make the playoffs but be eliminated quickly if they don't make big improvements at C and RG. OTs are expensive but Gs and Cs are relatively cheap. I would love to see the 49ers draft/sign a B+/A- C and RG. I know I am beginning to sound like a broken clock. Trade Jones for a 2nd and use both seconds on O linemen. Give Purdy a chance to show what he can really do.
I just highly doubt that happens Coach.
DeleteScooter,
DeleteYou are probably right and I will probably be here next year complaining about the O line
Bad loss, but great season.
ReplyDeleteH/T to the Seahawks...they looked dominant. This loss will sting as it should....hopefully we will come back stronger. In my mind, this season told me that KS is the coach for this team.
Even though it is highly likely that we will lose Saleh, I hope we get younger/reload on Offense and not be so CMC/Kittle dependent.
Hopefully they give Jordan James a shot. I liked how he looked in a limited amount of carries. I loved him in college. I think Tonges can hold the fort until Kittle returns. He reminds me of Brent Jones as a receiver.
DeleteMug,
DeleteThe last time the 49ers took an embarrassing loss like this was against the New York Giants in 1987. It was the Divisional Playoff and the final score was 49-3, and Joe Montana going to the hospital after crushing hit by Jim Burt.
BUT, the 49ers made some changes and went on to win 3 more SBs after that painful game.
At this point (after this embarrassing loss), I hope that this regime understands that they need to make some changes as well. Especially if they want to compete in their own division just for starters.
Kyle Shanahan disappoints yet again. He simply couldn't and can't figure out how to score a touchdown against Mike Macdonald and the Seahawks defense. Macdonald's got his number. Plain and Simple. If "KS is the coach for this team," as someone above suggested, woe is us.
ReplyDeleteAnd oh one other thing before my posts are summarily deleted
ReplyDeleteSUPER BOWL WINS
Bill Walsh 3
George Siefert 2
Kyle Shanahan -3
It's been 30 years, 30 years!, since the Niners last Super Bowl victory. And people here are cautioning patience, understanding, and the need for better draft picks and free agent signings. Please! Just not going to happen with this coach and this management. Eddie D would never have put up with them. Gosh, but I miss him.
DeleteYour comments couldn’t be more stupid. Did you even watch the game? It appears like you have absolutely no knowledge at all about this game.
DeleteFor mine the biggest needs on this team are WR, DE, DT, LG, TE and swing OT. There's other areas for improvement, but those are the most important areas to find starters and/ or significant role players.
ReplyDeleteA new FS and depth at LB would also be good, as well as an additional CB for depth.
@Scooter: I think it is time the defense ditches the wide 9. It just seems like a defense that is not sound in gap integrity for stopping the run. Plus, I just don't see the supposed advantages for rushing the passer. It probably works if you have great edges, but so does just about any NFL defensive scheme.
DeleteInteresting point. I would say though that the wide-9 is a little overblown. They don't run wide-9 every down. It's more a late down thing. Mykel for instance was largely playing 5T/ 6T on early downs.
DeleteThe bigger issue they had against the run was Mykel got hurt and the interior DT and LBs struggled to hold and fill gaps.
I agree with both of you, Cubus/Scooter- for me, they need to find a huge DT run stuffer- maybe West and Collins take big steps.... try and find and find the next Justin Smith...... maybe Valdez develops. Cowings supposedly had a good camp before getting injured. I think most FA's are expendable/depth signings...... would be nice to keep K Pineiro. Maybe Houston can trade some pieces for M Jones and abandon Stroud.
DeleteI think Strouds biggest problem today was a weak O line and weak receivers.
DeleteThe loss of DJ Jones really showed just how vulnerable the wide 9 is in stopping the run. In my opinion, it has been downhill since he left.
ReplyDeleteThat was my comment intended as an addon to my question to Scooter.
DeleteCubus,
DeleteIt started with Buckner then Jones followed by Armstead. That is why I hate the salary cap. If they could settle on a soft cap where you could go over the cap to sign players you drafted or UDFAs. If you go over the cap with those signings they couldn't sign any FAs off of other teams.
Agree, OC. Losing Buckner was huge and I hated that trade at the time.
DeleteHopefully, the 49ers can find players like Brock Purdy and the Rams Puka Nakua who was drafted in the 5th rd and passed over by 31 teams because he ran a 4.57 40.
ReplyDeleteGuys like this are out there. They just need to be found.
The worst part is that Nakua is exactly the type of WR KS likes. He is fearless going across the middle and blocks, ideal for KS and McVay. WR evaluation on the 49ers is suspect given that our HC is offensively oriented and was a WR himself.
DeleteI agree that too many evaluators focus on measurements. Why not focus on on what makes a good player. I think it’s more mental than physical. Those that have the drive to be excellent like McCaffrey, Warner, etc are your best players. I had to laugh recently listening to Holmgren state that Purdy doesn’t have the strongest arm. He has the strongest brain which is much better.
DeleteSaleh to the Titans?
