I have always felt the 49ers should have played more Man w Ward over the yrs....... and I feel the same w Lenoir. They're going to have to gamble somewhere to make up for the loss of Bosa as the better QB's are going to eventually pick you apart as they cannot hold up on the back end w/out pressure on the QB- like Baker did.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I didn't yell at the TV when I saw that soft zone against Tampa was because I promised not to. A strength of the defense is the man-coverage skill of Green, Lenoir and supposedly Luter. So Yeh, blitz like crazy if we have to -- anything is better than being picked apart and not responding.
DeleteI don't want to be the first to say the sky is falling but here I go any way. I don't see how any team that has lost 2 future HOF players on the same side of the ball, has one of the worst O lines in football and their schedule has gone from weak to relatively mid can expect to make the playoffs. This week against Atlanta should tell the story for the rest of the season
ReplyDeleteTbf coach, you and I have both been saying since the offseason that making the pkayoffs this year would be an achievement. Just such a young and inexperienced squad around a small core of elite players. Any of those elite players get hurt then it was always going to be difficult.
DeleteGood news is they started the season well, which gives them a punchers chance if the team can stick together and fight hard.
They surprised me early on but these injuries are just killing them. I go into every game wondering who will we lose today? It takes a lot of the joy out of watching the game.
DeleteDefinitely feel snake bit atm.
DeleteJust keep the score close at the end of 4th qrtr and maybe Eddy P can kick the winning FG. This guy might turn out as one of the players that keep the 49ers in the playoffs picture.
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's still a playoff team until they are mathematically eliminated.
I also felt Purdy needed to utilize his legs more- but now, w his turf toe, that probably doesn't come into play- therein... I feel some wrinkles need to be added as the receivers lack the separation- I suspect w the OL being iffy, we could see a lot more blitzing..... I shall remain cautiously optimistic
ReplyDeleteOn the season ticket holder front- we are getting killed on the resale side and they have increased prices prob 40% over the last 3-4 yrs... I know last year there were a lot of complaints . We're in our 20th year but w kids out of the house and animals, it makes it really difficult to attend many games.......
The Giants are reportedly interested in trading for 49ers WR Jauan Jennings, per Ryan Dunleavy.
ReplyDeleteIf they can get a mid round pick for him, I would let him go.
DeleteSO WHERE DO THE 9ERS GO FROM HERE?
ReplyDelete* IMO, Warner's injury changes the focus from this season to 2026.
* JL said he was "canvasing the NFL and would not be shy about making a trade for an edge rusher." If the 9ers trade for a DE now, he will need to be under contract in 2026 also.
* JL may still be interested in a trade before the Nov. 4th deadline, but it doesn't make sense to strip away resources for future seasons to load up for the final couple months of this season. With luck and no injuries, the 9ers may be able to win enough games to contend for the NFC West title. But with the injury to Bosa & Warner, IMO, the 9ers don't have the players to beat the top teams in the NFL.
* The O-line is at best average. The 9ers can't run the ball, BP has turf toe and Mac is not mobile. The 9er QB's are being pressured and the offense is one dimensional.
* Without Bosa and Warner, the 9ers may not be able to reach their
ceiling this season, but it doesn't mean this year is lost.
* The 9ers have 18 1st and 2nd year players on their roster, many are considered key components for the future. They'll have opportunities to gain valuable experience that will benefit them in 2026 and beyond. When Bosa and Warner are back in the lineup, they'll be surrounded by a better supporting cast.
* From 2021 to 2023, the 9ers had poor drafts with one quality player, Lenoir, B P and Winters, from each of those draft classes.
The returns from the past 2 years have been much better. The 9ers will have five 2nd year players in the starting lineup for the rest of the season and at least six rookies are filling significant roles.
* The rest of this season should be about setting themselves up for the future. A big part of that is keeping all of their 2026 draft picks for as many QUALITY draft picks as possible.
Yeah, pretty much how I feel.
DeleteI think the only reason for adding a 1 year rental is if they feel the player is important to help their youngsters grow. So would need to be a leader. But I agree that ideally anyone they trade for would be on the roster at least next year as well.
At this point I think the 49ers should be sellers not buyers. If they can find a way to beat the Falcons this Sunday maybe they hold off for one more week but if they lose Sunday they should make trades to load up even further for the 26 draft. Jennings, Purdy or Jones, Aiyuk, B. Robinson, Sky Moore, Valdes-Scantling, Farrell. Pinnock and Brown. @ or 3 trades could bring an extra 2 to 4 picks. From what I am reading it is an O line heavy draft. Rebuild thru the draft the O line, a HR hitting RB and a pass rusher. In free agency add a couple of mid priced LBs.
DeleteThe @ was supposed to be a 2
DeleteWhile I agree... what can they realistically sell?
DeleteI ask because I genuinely dont know what they have to offer?
BA? Coming off the injury and has a large salary.
Trent? Old, not as good and also has a large salary which you would likely have to agree to eat some of.
Bourne? He was a street free agent who I dont think will hold much value?
CMC??? Maybe but I think you would need to agree to eat some of his salary and I'm not sure he would get much in return at this point.
I dont think there is anyone you are selling for much more than a late round pick and potentially cash.
Though It might still be worth it.
While I believe the team is now unlikely to make the playoffs, I can't get on board with a fire sale.
DeleteThe message that sends to the players is a really bad one. There are more factors to team development than hoarding draft picks, and I don't think a bunch of mid to late round picks will be worth demoralising the team further.
I'd only let guys go that are clearly not in the future plans and could cause team disharmony if they stay.
Anybody see this?
ReplyDeleteKyle Shanahan explained why a defensive end was missing on the play that put Warner in the position that caused his season-ending injury.
“Because a guy was out there on special teams, we thought he'd stay out there and instead he came off the field," Shanahan said. "We didn't realize it until the snap that we needed 11 out there. Would've called a timeout if I saw it, but I didn't and it was an unfortunate mistake.”
Mistakes take place all the time. I dont see why this was the cause of J'ayr Briwn falling on Warner's ankle.
ReplyDeleteWarner aligned where the missing DE was supposed to be is likely why, had the DE been on the field, he would not have been in the precarious position he found himself when the injury occured.
DeleteA teammate fell on his foot. Every time a player is on the field it's a "precarious" situation. Dating back to Lawrence Taylor's career ending hit on Joe Theismen and even somewhat recently the ugly ankle injury to Trey Lance. It's football, and I'm sure that every player would agree that they know the dangers associated in the game.
DeleteYes, but the circumstances for Warner's injury were put in place by not having the DE out there.
DeleteInjuries happen all the time. Whether a player is on the field or not does not guarantee an injury will take place. Heck, Greenlaw was injured by trying to run onto the field. I've seen teams get penalized for too many men on the field and not enough players on the field without resulting in injuries. Was it an unnecessary injury? That could be argued. But if Warner is in position to make a tackle he's going to make it regardless of who's on the field, imo.
DeleteWe're not disputing injuries and football are synonymous. Our point involves the 3 lines of defense. The big guys upfront protect the medium guys behind them, who protect the little guys behind them! 😂
DeleteI agree. But a blitz call can change that as well. So, let's go to the crux of Warner's injury. Who's to blame?
DeleteWarner would take the blame but then Saleh would say its his fault, but ultimately Shanahan would take full responsibility.
DeleteLowest Pressure Rates Allowed by Rookie OL in Week 6 finds Conner Colby ranked 3rd at 6.4%.
ReplyDeleteThe issue isn't whether or not Fred gets injured at some point. The issue is he LIKELY does not get injuryed on THAT play because he had to line up out of position.
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't Fred, Shanahan, or Saleh call a time out in that situation? Who is responsible to make sure there are 11 players on the field?
DeleteThat's the $64 question.
DeleteMaybe there is no answer. I don't know. But I was responding to this guy.

Shanahan said "we" which suggests the mistake was made by quite a few people. Bottom line. The team lost the heart and soul of their defense. Now, it's time for the team to step it up.
Shanahan's "we", Foerster (Asst. HC), Saleh, Kocurek.
DeleteInjury updates: Brock Purdy and Mac Jones practice; Brock is the ‘more limited’ QB...
ReplyDelete* KS said Purdy is “itching” to get back out there with his teammates. As of now, “Brock is more limited than Mac,” per Shanahan. So, as of now, Jones is likely taking more reps with the first team. Again, keep an eye on whether Brock’s status changes throughout the week.
* The 9ers are also getting Jordan Watkins back at practice. Could he be their new returner? With Moore not practicing, Shanahan said Jordan Watkins will “get a shot at” returning punts.
I think we'll see the qb carousel continue. Purdy's foot won't fully heal without an offseason. He might play a game and miss a couple throughout the rest of the season. Jones has his own injuries. At some point we're likely to see Martinez.
DeleteYea, I would agree
ReplyDeleteInteresting background on Tatum Bethune. Replaces Warner at MLB
ReplyDeletehttps://www.facebook.com/reel/1869464713643398
He put in the offseason work. He hits like a minivan. It's all up to his acumen now.
DeleteFalcons DL Ruke Orhorhoro leads the NFL in QB pressure rate among DTs (15.5%, minimum 80 pass-rush snaps).
ReplyDeleteJust maybe Nick Martin will get to show case his talents now that Warner is IR.
ReplyDeleteAs I understood it, Martin hasn't been active due to his inability to convince Boyer to play on special teams.
DeleteRazor I just read this. John Lynch: Rookie Nick Martin improving every week, could be ready for 49ers debut.
DeleteIf the 49ers LB corp can't have a semblance of stability with Fred out things could get tricky. Winters has to be trusted to keep the middle intact. And it needs to start on Sunday. Atlanta has tall WRs and at some point Winters may need to cover one of them which seems to be where he's struggled.
ReplyDeleteTBD
IF THE 9ERS HOPE TO BEAT ATLANTA, WITH THE INJURIES TO THE DEFENSE, THE RUN GAME WILL NEED TO IMPROVE.
ReplyDelete* The 9ers have struggled in the run game to start the season, being one of the most inefficient rushing attacks in the NFL to date.
CMC ranks 2nd in the NFL with 108 carries, but 20th in yards with 336. That equates to 3.1 yards per carry. Brian Robinson hasn’t been efficient either, averaging 4.0 yards per carry on 27 attempts.
* The 9ers run game has issues with the O-line, where the interior group, specifically OG's Colby and Puni, has struggled. But, that’s not the only issues. The TE's and WR's have struggled to block on the outsides, which is a reflection of the team’s injuries. George Kittle has been missing, but should return this week, but Jauan Jennings is still nowhere near 100 percent, so the 9ers will have rely on Bourne and Robinson for blocking.
* The 9ers are facing an Atlanta D that ranks 17th in rushing yards allowed per game (114.0) and 27th in yards per carry (4.8). However, the Falcons are the best passing defense in the NFL, so it will be important to get positive yardage on early downs, move the chains control the clock and keep Atlanta's offense off the field.
* Atlanta's defense blitzes at the highest rate in the NFL (41.6%). The 9ers' O-line and Mac Jones must handle this pressure effectively to avoid turnovers to Atlanta.
Christian McCaffrey is excited to get George Kittle back. Says his presence is felt everywhere and I think especially in the run game. I won't be surprised when the 49ers running game improves with 85 back out there.
ReplyDeleteI've heard this somewhere before but I can't quite put my finger on it.😁
It'll probably improve to some degree. But will it make it a strength?
DeleteTime will tell but I'd like to see it translate to a CMC explosive run for 20+ yards Sunday night.
DeleteI agree, a healthy Kittle should help the run game. I also believe Puni hasn't recovered from the knee injury, or Colby from a groin injury...
ReplyDeleteAs they improve, the 9ers run game should improve.
I believe that Sunday nights game is the ultimate test as to whether this team should add players by trade. If they win Sunday night I believe they should add a D lineman and a LB. If they lose I don't think they should waste any draft capital. Agree or disagree?
ReplyDeleteCoach- I suspect they feel pretty gd at LB unless they KNOW it would be an immediate upgrade over the young guys- ie, maybe one of Saleh's guys from the Jets. Per DL, I think they know after the last two games that they have to do SOMETHING- the lack of pressure is almost insurmountable.
DeleteI don't think they should trade winning or losing.
DeleteOldCoach
DeleteI expect JL will wait until after the NT giants game, "IF" he is going to make a trade. Why wait until then? IMO, it will come
down to wins and losses. If the 9ers beat Atlanta, Texans and
NY Giants, they'll be 7W - 2L and will likely on need 4 more wins, out of 10 games, to make the playoffs.
Note: The NFL trade deadline is Nov 4th @ 4:00 PM....
** NY Giants game**
DeleteAs anticipated, Shanahan laid out Nick Martin's job will be special teams. The only way he'll see action defensively is if another injury occurs.
ReplyDeleteOr rotation. Regardless, will be good to see him getting some playing time.
DeleteHOW CAN THE 9ERS BEAT ATLANTA?
ReplyDeleteThe 9ers will be without Warner. regarded as the team’s best player and best leader.
* The 9ers D must stop Atlanta RB Bijan Robinson! He's rushed for 170 yards and a TD on 19 carries. He also caught six passes for 68 yards. LB Dee Winters job will be to slow him down, keep him under 100 yards and out of the End Zone? If he does, the 9ers can win.
* The 9ers D also needs to pressure QB Penix’s and disrupt his timing as he tries to complete passes to WR Drake London, who has 34 receptions for 427 yards and 2 TD's
* The 9ers’ 1st Rd draft pick, DE Mykel Williams registered his first sack last week against Baker Mayfield and the TB. The 9ers need more of the same against the Falcons, who enter the game with the league’s second-ranked offense..
* With injuries to Jennings and Pearsall, WR Bourne stepped up with back-to-back games in which he totaled 142 yards receiving.
KS said “He’s been up for the challenge, and every time he’s gone there, he’s made the play and he’s done even more with it after."
The 9ers will need another big game from Bourne.
* TE Kittle got off to a great start this season. In his first 21 snaps, he caught four passes for 25 yards, including a touchdown, against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, then had a right hamstring injury while blocking and spent five weeks on injured reserve. He returned to practice this week and is expected to play Sunday night against the Falcons. Kittle's receiving could be the difference between a win and
a loss....His blocking will also be needed in the run game.
* LB Tatum Bethune; There's NO WAY he can replace MLB Warner!
But the 9ers believe Bethune has a lot of talent and can do a very good job while stepping into the team’s starting role at MLB. That begins with making sure everyone on the defense is on the same page.
* KS said, “No one can be as good as Fred at those types of things, but something I expect Tatum to be able to handle in the future,”
He'll need to be a solid player, and not a liability on defense! If he can do that, the 9ers’ D will be fine with him on the field.
* with the home field advantage, I'm giving the 9ers a one point win (24 to 23) with Eddy Pineiro kicking a walk off field goal.
They said Willis can never be replaced, then came along Bowman, Bowman can never be replaced, then came along Warner...
ReplyDeleteProving once again, no one is irreplaceable!
ReplyDeleteSo the question is, can Bethune do the job and help the 9er D keep Atlanta RB Bijan Robinson from beating them? TBD
The more important question for mine is whether Winters can return to the form he showed the first few weeks of the season. He's had a couple of rough outings in recent weeks.
DeleteReally need the young DL to step up as well.
This should be the DL's toughest assignment yet against the Falcons OL.
ReplyDeleteYeah, agreed. I reckon Mykel is ready for a big game.
DeleteNo doubt controlling Atlanta RB Bijan Robinson will be difficult. But RB Tyler Algeier can also run the ball with his hard-nose running style. * IMO, CMC's ability to run the ball and keep Atlanta's offense off the field, as well as Mac getting the ball to Kittle, oir is a must for the 9ers to win.
ReplyDelete* I'm also curious to see how Saleh tries to put pressure on Atlanta QB Penix? Will he blitz him and risk letting WR Drake London beat him, and will he have Lenoir cover WR London man on man?
If the D can limit the Falcons' run game, Niners will win.
Deletemood
ReplyDeleteRobinson is a weapon both as a RB and a WR. In the first 5 games this season, he led the NFL in scrimmage yards with 822. So yes, I agree with you, the 9ers have to keep him from beating them.
But Atlanta QB Penix, also has WR London and TE Kyle Pitts who the
9er D will have to limit to win.

Deletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9U3GUAROuk
Robinson will be a handful and will rack up some yards. But Penix is sufficiently inexperienced to be confused by good zone defense and rattled by well-timed blitzes (which Saleh is using increasingly). If Niners D does the Saleh thing, play with violent purpose, tackle hard and firm, and swarm to the ball. Niners will pull this one out. I'm counting on Kittle's return to spark the run game. I hear Ulbrich is blitzing a lot but Niners offense can pick them up. Maybe another RB named Robinson will make a difference on the field!
