Unofficial Depth Chart

  1. Daily changes to the unofficial depth chart resembles a roulette wheel.

  2. Rookies still need to earn it, but I expect there will be some movement in the depth chart before the season begins.

  3. Not sure if there is any significance in having Mykel Williams ahead of Bryce Huff in the depth chart. At the very least the rookie is trending the right direction.

Based on camp reports and how the CB D-chart looks, I think Luter Jr is gonna be the odd man out and will be this year's Samuel Womack.

Demo, Green, Brown, Stout, Flowers are locks. We keep 6 CBs usually, so this probably means 1 spot for Jakob Robinson, Chase Lucas, Darell Luter Jr and Eli Apple. Comes down to Special teams contribution I guess. But I don't see Luter making this team.... Jakob Robinson won't clear waivers and the rookie is making at least one play a day with his PBUs.

    1. On defense... they always list base as the starters, but base is not really what determines games, unless you absolutely suck at run D. Teams are in some variation of Nickel about 2.5x more than base.
For Example in 2023 SF was in base on about 20% of their snaps and in nickel at around 79%.
Lest you think this was unique to Wilkes, The Jets under Salah were in base only 16% of the time and in nickel on slightly over 80% of their defensive snaps.
Needless to say Huff will get a lot of Reps even as a situational pass rusher, with the exception of Big Nickel packages.
*one curious note* in 2023 SF had no snaps recorded in Dime packages while the Jets utilized on 2.6% of their defensive snaps.

  4. I had Robinson over Luter going into camp. I've heard nothing to change my mind.

  5. Rookie S Marques Sigle got some reps with the 1's.

  6. “I love Farrell. He’s one of the best run-blocking tight ends I’ve seen in a long time,” 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster said. With Juice out we're seeing a lot of 22 personnel.

  9. Everyone knows the reason. It's because when the Kansas City Chiefs are behind to start the 4th qtr, the NFL Refs kick into high gear. No defensive player will come within five yards of Patrick Mahomes in the 4th. You could blitz five Nick Bosas without success, which is why I NEVER watch a Chiefs game. Totally phony, fake football. The only way to combat this is to control the ball and try to run out the clock.

    1. Did you watch last years SB? The Eagles D line ate Mahomes alive in the 4th quarter. Refs have been protecting super star QBs for the last 25 years or so. Hell if a player even breathed on Brady he was called for roughing the passer. Protecting the super stars isn't only happening in the NFL how do you explain Wilt Chamberlin never fouling out of one single game in his entire career.

  10. Hmm, Lombardi suggest that a Purdy, Garoppolo, Darnold starting QB's in the NFC west.

  11. Isaiah Neyor is signed by Green Bay. I was hoping that he would not sign elsewhere and be brought back and placed on PS.
    I was not to be.

    1. The biggest issue with Neyor is that he disappears too much.

    2. Apparently, that seems to be the issue.

  12. 49ers worked out several defensive tackles today:

    Siaki Ika
    Pheldarius Payne
    Shakel Brown
    Michael Dwumfour

  13. I liked Siaki Ika coming out of college. He was stout DT with very good strength. I'm a little surprised that he's been on 3 different teams in his early career.

  14. 49ers health by season:

    2024: #1 most injured
    2023: #29 most injured ◄ 12-5, lost SB
    2022: #9 most injured ◄ 13-4, lost NFCCG
    2021: #3 most injured
    2020: #1 most injured
    2019: #6 most injured ◄ 13-3, lost SB
    2018: #4 most injured

  15. Looking forward to this season. I think the offense will bounce back, but the defense may struggle through the first half of the season if there are several rookie starters.

  16. Niners have signed QB Tanner Mordecai and placed WR Equanimeous St. Brown on IR, per the team.

  17. Kreug said that Sebastian Valdez dominated against Denver. Thinks the best pass-rushing line would move Williams inside along with Valdez with Bosa and Huff outside.
Valdez did 34 reps with 225. Sounds like 300 lbs. of muscle. I'm stoked

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes. Valdez over West and he thinks West has been showing greatness, too. High praise.

  19. We should have a much better idea of how good, or bad, the 9ers are after they play the Broncos. Especially the 9er O against the Denver D.

  20. I'm not putting any weight on tomorrow's game. It's only a preseason game and the first one out of three. This is solely about keeping your starters healthy and evaluating the young players. I just want to see which players are going to improve by the last preseason game.

    1. Same here. The only thing I am paying attention to is what the team's depth is like.

    2. I want to see how all the rookies are looking. Could care less about the score.

  21. I am usually into the first half even most of the 3rd quarter but after that I have a hard time staying awake. Greg Papa won't be calling the game, I hope his replacement realizes that most of us don't know the new players by their numbers and identifies them by name.

    1. Hopefully we'll see some good diamonds in the rough tomorrow.

  22. As a guy that roots for the underdog (aka the 1st "Rocky" movie) I'll be pulling for UDFA Sebastian Valdez.
