ReplyDelete9ers announce open training camp practice schedule:
ReplyDelete* 11 of the team's practices in Santa Clara will be open to the public.
* The 9ers will welcome fans to their facility on July 25, July 27-29, August 4-5, August 7, and August 11-12. Season ticket holders will also be invited to attend practice on July 24.
* The 9ers will report to training camp on July 22 and their first practice of camp on July 23 will be the first of those 11 open sessions.
* The August 7 practice will be a joint practice with the Broncos. That will also be "87 Day" in honor of the late Dwight Clark and the 9ers will donate all proceeds from ticket sales to the Golden Heart Fund which Clark helped create to support former 49ers players in need.
Can't wait for TC to get here....less than 2 weeks now.
ReplyDeleteHere are the camp battles I'm looking forward to (in the order of importance IMO):
1) LB2 - Martin vs Winters or will it be one of the new "Saleh guys" on the roster?
2) I will put the entire D-Line and DB group here. There is way too much turnover to single out position battles here. Slot CB, FS, DE2 and DT1/2 battles should be fascinating.
3) RG - Ben Bartch is the front-runner, I think. But can Zakelj or one of the rookies supplant him?
4) Kicker - Will Moody stick around another year to psychologically torment me? :)
5) WR3 and WR4 - I'm assuming by end of season, we will have WR1 - JJ, WR2 - Pearsall, WR3 - BA and WR4 - DR. But for Game 1, who among Watkins or Cowing will be up the pecking order?
6) TE3 - Can either Tonges or Mason Pline take the reins here or is it gonna be another Dwelley show?
7) RB3 - Can one of the rookies supplant the Vets?
Nightmare scenarios:
1) While any injury to the Big 6 (Purdy, Kittle, Williams, Bosa, Warner or DeMo) will potentially mean we don't make the playoffs, I think a catastrophic scenario will be an injury to JJ.
2) What if both kickers cannot thrive under pressure and are no good?
3) Holdout/Contract situation and/or Injury situation persists for Alfred Collins.
Safe bet this is the most competitive training camp under this regime.
DeleteMUG
ReplyDeleteI'd add signing rookie DT Alfred Collins to your list.
GEEP,
DeleteCollins signing will be part of a domino effect. If the other 2nd round picks who were chosen before him begin to sign then so will Collins. It will be interesting to see if those other teams cave and give their picks guaranteed contracts. I wonder if the agents haven't got together and made a pact to stick together. It wouldn't totally surprise me if most of those 2nd rounders don't hold out into camp or even past the start of the season.
Yes, that was my Nightmare Scenario #3
DeleteOldCoach / Mug
DeleteThe question I have is: Will Collins report to camp on the 15th?
If not, how far behind will it put the D and who replaces him if
holds out?
I've always been one to cheer for the underdog.
ReplyDeleteThese are the 4 I'll be pulling for in TC.
Conner Colby, Isaiah Neyor, Mason Pline, and Sebastian Valdez. Colby may be the only one with a shot.
AES / Or anyone that has an opinion:
DeleteNOTHING IS WRITTEN IN STONE.... But here are the TC
battles I'll be watching to see who wins a starting job.
ON DEFENSE:
* LB: Will Dee Winters be the starting WLB this season, or will rookie Nick Martin beat out Winters, and will the loser be the starting SLB?
* Safety: Brown and WHO, will be the starter until Mustapha recovers from a torn ACL? Will Jason Pinnock be a starter?
* CB: Will Renardo Green start at LCB?
* Darrell Luter performed well in OTAs. could he be a starting
CB? If so, could he beat out Green?
* Will Tre Brown be the starting NB, or will rookie Upton Stout
win the NB job?
* And where will Deommodore Lenoir start, at NB or RCB?
ON OFFENSE
* OG: Does Ben Bartch win the starting job, or does Spencer
Burford? Does Connor Colby make the 53 cut?
* TE: Will free agent TE, Luke Ferrell, earn the $20 Mil the 9ers
are paying him?
* WR: Will Ricky Pearsall step up in his 2nd season? Will WR
Jacob Cowing?
* Will f/a WR Demarcus Robinson become the 9ers WR3 after he serves a 3 game suspension? Will Isaiah Neyor continue
to impress after the pads come on?
GEEP,
DeleteThis could be the most important TC in the Lynch, Shanahan era.
2nd year and now this years draft pick players will need to make good contributions. The 49ers are still a very good team with foundational players like Purdy, Kittle, Trent, Warner, Jennings, and Bosa. If CMC and Aiyuk can return to pre-injury form, they can make a strong post-season run. Camp battles will be fierce and may the best man win. Winters showed some flashes last year at the end of the season. I believe that he is going into TC as the odds-on favorite. I'm hoping these young players can add to the foundation.
AES
DeleteI agree, this could indeed be the most important TC in the JL,
KS era. One thing I believe we can all agree to, DC Saleh, D-line coach Kris Kocurek, LB coach Johnny Holland and DB coach Daniel Bullocks have got their work cut out for them. And then
they'll need to do it again for the 2026 season.
You're right GEEP in regard to the coaches. The 49ers cannot have another year defensively like last season.

ReplyDeleteOC
DeleteEVEN BETTER, only 3 more days until the rookies report to TC!
IMO, their success will likely make or break the 9er season this year.
GEEP,
DeleteI remember last year I was disappointed that there was zero media coverage of that week of rookie camp. I imagine it will be the same this year. I think all they do is conditioning.

Browns rookie running back Quinshon Judkins was arrested on a domestic violence and battery charge in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday, according to the Fort Lauderdale Police department and Broward County arrest records.
Sadly, we seem to hear these same stories in the NFL each year. Question, what does the NFL and NFLPA need to do in order to help discourage players from these criminal actions?

ReplyDeleteLance Zierlein on the accusation of collusion:
@LanceZierlein
Are you nuts? Why in the world would they fully guarantee a second rounder? There are no owners in any of the major sports who are interested in giving away leverage for the team control portion of a first contract. Doesn't make any sense to give that up from a business standpoint. That isn't collusion, that is maintaining the standard that has been set for first contracts.
Yep. But now that precedent has been set. The teams that gave those guaranteed contracts this year will not be popular with the others.
DeleteI don't see 2 teams setting the precedent. That's on them.
DeleteThey've made negotiations come to a standstill for every other 2nd round contract because that's exactly what every agent is arguing.
DeleteDo you believe those team will end up capitulating? I don't.
DeleteJJ holding out for a new contract. Lets see how long he lasts cuz if he doesn't play he won't be able to max out when he hits F/A next year.
ReplyDeleteRazor,
DeleteIs he holding out? I read that he is asking for a new contract or to be traded but he has taken part in all team activities so far. He can't hold out during camp without paying huge fines. He can hold in and claim he is injured.
Jennings was the 49ers number one WR last season and is the #1 WR entering 2025 until Aiyuk returns. Im not sure what he's asking for, but his current $8+ million doesn't seem befitting of a top WR, imho.
DeleteIf he has a good year he'll get $15M on the open market.
DeleteIs he holding out? We have no plans on paying our WR3 $15M and why we drafted a wr in rounds 1 and 4. Writings been on the wall.
AES
Delete"Jennings was the 49ers #1 WR last season and is the #1 WR entering 2025 until Aiyuk returns."
TRUE....EXCEPT
* Jennings was ranked as the 9ers' #3 wide receiver in 2023 and 2024. He didn't become the 9ers #1 receiver until after Aiyuk was injured and Deebo traded. Is he really a #1 WR?
* Will Jennings be the 9ers 2025 #1 WR, or will Pearsall?
* Will TE Kittle be the 9ers #1 receiver for 2026 season?
* Jennings 2025 salary is ~$7.5 Mil and he'll become a FA
in 2026, The QUESTION Then becomes;
A) Is he worth extending for $10 Mil per year, $12 Mil per year
or $15 Mil per year? How much is he worth to the 9ers?
B) Trade him if the 9ers can get a 2026 2nd Rd draft pick for him? What if the 9ers can only get a 3rd Rd 2026 draft pick
for him?
C) Or should the 9ers trade Jennings for a 2026 draft pick and then sign a FA WR like Keenan Allen, Amari Cooper, or Tyler? Boyd?
Sportec showed JJ at $8.2mil, but you are correct after I looked again. Jennings has been a valued WR (if not #1) he was also one overthrown pass from likely winning a SB and SB, MVP.
DeleteAES
DeleteMy questions are meant to play "devils advocate!" Questions the 9er FO will have to assess in deciding to keep, or trade JJ. If the 9er FO decides to extend him, as you said, "he has been a valued WR," but how much is he worth?
I don't see JJ sitting out during the season with a $625k per game roster bonus. Thats just over $10.5M over 17 games!
DeleteI'm hoping both parties can meet in the middle.
DeleteGEEP,
DeleteWhile the 49ers coaches have been touting their young WRs like Pearsall, Cowing, and rookie Watkins, none of them have yet to establish themselves as valued and productive players.
Pearsall finished the end of the season with good numbers, but imo, he's not on the same level as Jennings. After Aiyuk went down last year it was JJ that stepped up.
As I said earlier, I haven't heard how much Jennings is asking for, but if it's within the 49ers striking distance I hope they both can be satisfied.
Razor
DeleteI agree, i don't see JJ losing $10,265,00 sitting out this season.
Do you see the 9ers extending him, or letting him walk
next season?
Losing Jennings will negatively effect their running game almost as much as their passing game. He may be the best run blocking WR in football. He is also one of the best 3rd down WRs in football. Even when he was WR3 he was more valuable than most teams #2. Give him 45 mill over 3 years with 40 mill guaranteed and front load the contract at 20 mill the first year.
DeleteRE JJ
Delete* Some sources are suggesting a deal between $11 Mil and $15 Mil per season. Other reports suggest a market value of ~ $10 Mil per year, and why I used those numbers.
* If 28 Y/O Jennings has a 1100+ yards receiving this season, I can see the 9ers trying to extend him for 2-3 years at ~$10 to $12 Mil per year.
* If the 9ers sign him for more than $12 Mil P/Y, I wouldn't be
surprised if they try to trade Aiyuk?
One of my most trusted 49ers voices aside from Razor & Scooter is David Lombardi. And he said that it should be no surprise that Jennings is asking for more money. "Jauan out performed his deal to such a great extent in 2024, you would expect him to want more money." He goes on to say, "Jauan is your experienced proven X WR."
DeleteI agree 100%. If you have some time check out DL on YouTube.
This is BA 2. I don't know about you all, but I am frustrated by prima donnas not honoring contracts they signed. My respect for Jennings has gone from 100 to zero. They drafted him in the 7th round, trained him, and turned him into a multimillionaire. Sure he had the talent, but he could have easily been a UFDA and ended up cashiering at Piggly Wiggly. Deal him as soon as possible - hopefully to a bottom-dwelling team - and don't worry about the season. One player is not going to make or break.
DeleteI was just told his LTBE per game bonus total is 625k for all games combined, if he's on the roster. Or, Just under 37k per game. The 2026 void years hit is because of the 6.21m signing bonus prorated and then the 5.6m option bonus prorated, then the per game roster bonuses of 24 and 25 to 1.3m and 200k in workout, with void years triggering at the end of his contract.
DeleteThe way the prorated bonuses from the void years adding up is:
4.2 option
3.72 signing
300k in other bonuses.
I think they will ultimately work out something with him, so long as he is willing to be reasonable in his contract demands.
DeleteThey guy I often see thrown out there as a comparable for a contract for Jennings is Jakobi Meyers. Only problem there is he signed his contract a couple of years ago, so it probably isn't that useful as a benchmark anymore.
But I think if he's willing to take a contract in that $12-$13M a year range, 49ers will be fine getting it done.
If he has a good year he'll command $15M APY on the open market.
DeleteSure, but that would mean taking less this year. Let's say he could get 3 yrs $45M next year, add $7.5M this year it's 4 yrs $52.5M. Around $12.5-$13M a year.
Delete$13.125M per year to be exact.
DeleteI don't think they have any intention of paying that much for WR3.
Delete10 days until TC
ReplyDeleteGarrett Wilson just signed for $31M APY. I hope we never do that again. No WR not named Jerry Rice is worth that much.
ReplyDeleteI just went from not really worried to very worried about the Jennings situation. I was listening to KNBR and Jennifer Lee Chan said that Drew Rosenhaus is Jennings agent. His clients are known to hold out into the season. Chan said he is comparing his 24 stats to other players with comparable stats and that is what he will settle for. The figure he is mentioning is 20 to 25 mill a year. If they have to play with Pearsall, Cowings and Watkins as WR1, WR2 and WR 3 they are in deep trouble
ReplyDeleteCoach,
ReplyDeleteI believe somewhere between $12 - 15M will be the negotiating range. A very productive 2025 season will propel JJ to the $20M club.
I dont mind paying Jennings up to 15 but I don't want a multiyear deal with some pretty clean outs.
ReplyDeleteI honestly think they way Kyle's offense appears to be evolving SF should invest in another TE. Event if the TE is more of a Delanie Walker style slight tweener. They are cheaper and provide provide more flexibility in the run pass game than FB's or WR3.
One strategy I would propose is draft a 1st Round WR every year and then exercise 5th year option if he is promising.
DeleteThen release him after the 5th year to get a comp pick.
It takes a WR two years to become fully functional in Kyle's system and with WRs becoming pricey, no point in having multiple WR's on 2nd contracts. Doesn't make financial sense to me.

ReplyDeleteCoach,
ReplyDeleteAm I the only person that feels like it takes forever for a new football season to start, and then watch the season just flash by?
Man, I can't wait for 49ers football to begin and hoping it's worth the wait.
I agree with your take.
DeletePart of the reason the offseason seems longer this year is because we didn't get to see one month of "playoff" football.
Hopefully we play well into January next year.
FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH: Spotrac Market Value for WR Jauan Jennings:
ReplyDelete* Current Contract: Jennings signed a two-year, $15.4 million contract with the 49ers in 2024.
* Projected Market Value: Spotrac's market value tool suggests a two-year extension worth approximately $38 million.
* 2024 Production: Jennings had career-highs in receptions (77), receiving yards (975), and touchdowns (6) reports 49ers Webzone.
* PFF Grade: He also achieved a personal best receiving grade of 83.7 from Pro Football Focus.
* First Downs: Jennings recorded 47 first downs, second-most on the team.
* Potential Contract Extension: The 49ers may explore a contract extension, but the high asking price could lead to a trade according to Niners Nation.
Jennings is a valuable and productive asset to the 49ers. At the moment, the only established WRs on the team - Aiyuk and Robinson won't be on the field for the first 3 - 5 games. Jennings has more than proven his worth. Hopefully, there's a way the 49ers can keep him.
ReplyDeleteI DO hope they work something out w Jennings as he has been a solid contributor to the team........ let's not forget that hopefully we'll see more 2 TE sets this year w the Luke Farrell addition
