Shall We Begin?

Mandatory Mini-Camp for the San Francisco 49ers begins today!

  1. It's all formality and smiles until the pads go on. The pads separate the men from the boys. August is when the smiles become frowns and the real noise of football begins.

  2. While it's good to see the 9ers players back at practice. I'm looking forward to the end of July when they'll be scrimaging with pads on and we'll begin to see who elevates their play....
This should be an interesting season, watching the rookies establish themselves,

#49ers kicker update from minicamp: Jake Moody, showing his new shortened approach, made all kicks from 27, 32, 37, 47, 52 and 55 yards

  4. Nice. It's his job to keep if he seriously makes positive adjustments.

  5. DT Alfred Collins (calf) will be back for training camp, per Kyle Shanahan.

  6. Kyle Shanahan on Bryce Huff:

“He affects the quarterback. We talk about just getting off the ball, and how fast he does it. It'll be our best get off the ball guy we've had since Dee Ford.”

  7. Kyle Shanahan said Ricky Pearsall was healthy enough to participate in minicamp, but they are being careful with him. He’ll be full-go for training camp.

  8. Shanahan, "The best get off" indicates that Huff will play a large part on the resurgence of the 49ers defense. David Lombardi used the word "explosive" in describing Guerendo's practice today. Not bad.

Guerendo has always had the size, speed and agility....His weakness has been blocking and protecting the QB. If he's improved his pass
protection, he'll back up CMC. IF not, I expect James Jordan will.

Looking forward to watching Huff. I expect he will free Bosa up from
seeing a lot of double teaming.

    1. Guerendo played in his rookie year because of injuries to CMC and Jordan Mason. I expect him to become a more complete player in all aspects of Shanahan' RB scheme in year two. But I agree, if Guerendo can't take the next step James will be lurking.

  10. Day 1 of minicamp is a wrap. Good day for defense, with three INTs. Offense also had a bunch of drops. Jake Moody, with his new two-step approach, looked good. Made 6 of 7 FGs and was only kicker used.

    1. Larry Krueger had him 7 of 7. Grant Cohn had him 6 of 7

  11. Moody's issues seem to be between his ears in game pressure moments. If he can conquer this, he'll be fine.

    1. I didn't like the trajectory of the ball- ie, he had some hook spin whereas in college he seemed to be more end-over-end. Will be curious to see if there were any changes to that- along w him shortening his approach from 3 steps to 2.

  12. Pinnock, along w Cowings/Watkins- Lombardi's take. He had some positive things to say, which would be really good in regards to the 49ers perceived lack of depth areas (WR, S/DB).

  13. Trent Williams today confirmed that he never even considered retirement this offseason and that, when that day does actually come, he’ll act respectfully and let the 49ers front office know on the sooner end so they can make the necessary personnel adjustments.

  14. Great. If his body can keep father time at bay, he may have some more productive seasons in his future.

    1. Keep in mind the year(s) he had off when battling the cancer. Likely adds to his longevity probability.

  15. There are 6 players that the 49ers can't afford to lose (imho).
    1. Brock Purdy
    2. CMC
    3. T. Williams
    4. Fred Warner
    5. Nick Bosa
    6. George Kittle.
There may be other players, but these are my top 6 going into 2025.

  16. Kyle Shanahan on Jacob Cowing:

"Jacob, I thought put in some of the most work that anyone did over the offseason...And I think it's really transferred over into those OTA practices."

  18. Mitchell Schwartz: "Reaching a frontside nose on outside zone with no help, and without getting pushed into the backfield, is so rare". "There’s a reason when Kyle Shanahan went to Atlanta he took Alex Mack and paid him big bucks".

  19. Steve Young on the 49ers offseason:

“I’m very happy with how they handled the offseason. They had a clear plan. It was a plan that was retooling. It wasn’t a complete restructure. It was retooling and making every move with tactical and smart and fast with signing everybody. And getting everybody on board. I thought they handled the offseason perfectly… What they did in the offseason was really smart.”

    1. Same. It was the reset that had to happen. If they'd tried to push it out another year it would have been a much more significant reset in 2026 - rebuild territory.

  20. 49ers needed to get young and faster. And they have. That being said, I also believe that 2026 is when it all comes together when this years rookies and second year players become better acclimated.

  21. Stewart and his handlers are making a lot of negative noise for a player chosen #17 in the draft.

    1. Yep, he's not ingratiating himself into the locker room or doing himself any favors when it comes to expectations versus reality on the field.

      Delete
    2. Personally I think he's in the right. Bengals are being entirely unreasonable and he should put his foot in the ground on this. Tbh, he shouldn't have been attending minicamp at all.

      Delete
    3. I'd be surprised if we've ever done a rookie deal where if cut it would void guarantees.

      Delete
    4. The current CBA doesn't allow it. The Bengals trying to insert language to allow it is them trying to exploit a loophole around the CBA, and Stewart is well within his rights to tell them to go jump.

      Delete
    5. Imagine contemplating passing on a $10.4M signing bonus because of language in his contract about future guarantee voids with the idea of Re-entering 2026 draft, sit out for the year and get drafted in Round 4 looking at a $5M contract. On its face it seems like a bad idea but when you consider the amount of development the player needs, it's career suicide.

      Delete
    6. I'm sure that's exactly the line of thinking the Bengals ownership are banking on.

Flipside of that argument- imagine risking having your first round pick not play for you or get important development time over a contract clause that owners agreed to in the CBA.

      Delete
  22. Larry K suggests that if Stewart's contract standoff continues the 49ers should see what it would take to teade for him.

I disagree with LK's suggested compensation of a 2026 2nd + Beal + a performance based conditional pick, but if you can get him for a next year's third I'd definitely consider it.

    1. Scooter,
If the 49ers can return to their winning ways a late 2nd rounder isn't much different than a 3rd round pick

      Delete
    2. True. It's still more than I'd want to give up for Stewart, personally.

Though I also fully acknowledge that giving up a 2026 2nd round pick to acquire pick 17 in 2025 should, in anyone's estimation, be considered an absolute steal. So I am probably being very unrealistic to suggest anything less than a 2nd.

  24. GEEP,
Speaking of another troubled player that received favor from the great Jerry Rice back in 2019 about the possibility of playing with the 49ers.

"I don't even know if we're gonna get the opportunity to bring him here, but if we do, I'm gonna be right there to mentor this guy and be around him because the only thing he's been talking about — he's been talking about this forever. 'I want to run the hill with Jerry Rice. I want to work out with Jerry Rice. I want to pick his brain and see what made him so successful.'

I'm glad that Lynch and Shanahan never entertained that idea.
