More details of Purdy's contact coming out.
ReplyDeleteAs I expected, it is an additional $165M over the first three "new" years of the deal. Or $170M over the next four years.
That fourth year (2028) he gets $55M, which means it's actually $115M over the next three years. Or an average of $38.33M between 2025 and 2027.
This definitely means a cap hit of around $8.5M in 2025 is in play, as David Lombardi reported. Though exact details of the signing bonus are still not announced, so will need to wait and see.
Based on these details I suspect it is effectively two 3-year deals, with an out ahead of the 2028 jump to $55M (which I suspect will have a high option bonus that year). Though that 4th year also vests to fully guaranteed the year prior, so to get out of the contract before the 4th year would require a negotiation on timing of when that fully guarantees or the 49ers taking a big cap hit.
With the extensions of Purdy, Kittle and Warner, 49ers should be back up to around top 5 in cash spend again this year.
ReplyDeleteI'll guess we're at $42M or thereabouts when the cap dust settles.
DeleteMy only question regarding BPs, Kittle and Warner's contract is, will the 9ers be in contention for any big to medium FA signings in the 26 off season? Or will they be cap strapped for the foreseeable future?
ReplyDeleteThe cap is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned, especially after the dump they took in contracts this year. Expected to be $300M next year and continue to rise year after year.
DeleteCoach, one of the main reasons of purging contracts this offseason was to help free up future cap space and "reset" their cap.
DeleteObviously these extensions will fill up some of that cap space, but even so the 49ers are likely to carry over around $40M in cap space from 2025 to next year. Prior to the Purdy and Warner extension details the 49ers are currently slated to be $55M under the cap, so add that $40M and they have around $95M in space, pending the cap hits for Purdy and Warner in 2026. And this is before any roster moves or restructures/ extensions to free up more space.
The moves they made this offseason have put them in a healthy place cap wise moving forward.
Scooter,
DeleteI was hoping that was the answer. I can always rely on you to give clarity to the cap. I can see a scenario where they might have to replace both OTs next year. If they win somewhere around 8 or 9 games like you and I have predicted I think they could draft their future RT in the 1st round but they may have to sign their future LT in free agency or a trade.
No probs Coach. Yeah, given they were clearly trying to draft an OT this year prior to day 3 I think it's clear they will be in the market for at least one OT next offseason, whether it be draft or FA. And yes, potentially two.
DeleteI'm curious to see whether they look to extend/ re-sign McKivitz. He's been a bargain for what he's earning, but they won't get him for so low a deal next time.
Remember when they were coming after York for going "cheap"? 🤣
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile he just dished out $404M dollars to Brock Purdy, George Kittle & Fred Warner in the last month.
Pay your core and fill out the roster through the draft is the key to sustained success.
ReplyDeleteAgree.
DeleteGood deal.
ReplyDeleteThe 49ers win total over/under is currently sitting at 10 wins at Race/Sports books in Las Vegas casinos and I'm told if they replaced Brock Purdy with Aaron Rodgers that number would drop to 9.5 wins.
ReplyDeleteWho is pushing for Aaron Rodgers to supplant Purdy?
ReplyDeleteAfter extending BP and Fred Warner, there are 3 players the 9ers could extend next. WR Jennings, OT McKivitz and DE Yetur Gross-Matos.
ReplyDeleteWR Jauan Jennings: Signed a 2 year, $15.4 million extension last offseason. He's entering the final year of his deal, caught 77 passes for 975 yards and 6 TD's last year, taking a step forward as the 49ers lost Aiyuk to a season-ending injury.
He more than doubled his previous career-highs in catches and receiving yards, showing what he could do in a higher-volume role.
Entering a contract year once again, the 9ers could re-sign Jennings to a multi-year deal entering his age-28 season. He's a great fit in the 9ers offense and would provide the 9ers with a long-term trio of Jennings, Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall.
How much & how many years, should the 9ers be willing to resign
Jennings for?
OT Colton McKivitz: He had trouble giving up sacks in 2024, but was better than people think. He would provide stability at a position of need if extended. If the 9ers allow McKivitz to hit free agency, that could leave them without either starting tackle next year if TW retires.
The price for OT's is going up. We saw that this offseason when Dan Moore got four years and $82 million from the Titans and KC signed
OG Jaylon Moore to a three-year, $45 million deal.
How much & how many years, should the 9ers be willing to resign
McKivitz for?
DE Yetur Gross-Matos: He wasn’t very productive in 2024, but is in the 2nd year of a 2 year, $18 million deal he signed last offseason. He currently has a cap hit of $9.5 million for the upcoming season and is only 27 years old.
How much & how many years, should the 9ers resign Matos for?
Of those, I would only try and re-sign Jennings and McKivitz. But I don't think either will come cheap.
DeleteNot adding an OT this year in the draft probably puts more onus on locking McKivitz down. But would he take the same sort of deal Moore got? I wouldn't feel comfortable going much over that.
Both Jennings and McKivitz will not be on the team next year.
DeleteThe 49ers have a better chance of re-upping Jennings than McKivitz, imo. The team should give Jennings a new contract ASAP to avoid JJ from jumping ship after this season. I believe that Jennings has shown himself to be a core player over the last couple of seasons. And he is currently the best WR on the team.
ReplyDeleteJennings likely leaves for $15M APY and McKivitz $20M.
DeleteI believe the 49ers know the value that Jennings gives them and will make a strong pitch to keep him in the fold. I wouldn't throw in the proverbial towel on Jennings walking after this season just yet..
DeleteThey already drafted his replacement. Unless they can get out from under Aiyuk's contract, JJ is a goner. I take no pleasure in saying that but I feel it's a foregone conclusion.
DeleteHas that player already proved that he's better than Jennings? Forecasting a replacement for JJ before TC seems a little ambitious, imho. If Jennings level of play continues to grow he's going to make it hard for the 49ers to let him walk.
DeleteWe'll see how that projected replacement looks this season.
I know this regimes SOP and I'm fairly confident in my assessment of the situation with both JJ and McKivitz.
DeleteThey haven't got s replacement waiting in the wings for McKivitz though. Going to be interesting to see what they do there.
DeleteShanahan and Foerster seemed unusually confident in Spencer Burford as their swing OT. Didn't bring in anyone special to give him competition and he should know this system and what's expected from him like the back of his hand by now. I'm guessing he's aware of the huge opportunity he has in front of him.
DeleteHe's also off contract end of year.
DeleteThey got options. They could extend Burford and/or look to replace him in next years OT draft class.
DeleteSure. But if Williams also retires they'll be in bother.
DeleteYou think Trent saying his goal is to play until 40 every year is just bluster? He is signed through 2026. I think at that point they take it year by year. By then they should have a good candidate to replace him or they can do it through FA or via trade.
DeleteNot intentional bluster, but at his age it is always a year by year proposition.
DeleteBarring a serious injury I have no doubt that anything Andrew Whitworth could do, Trent can do better.
DeleteThat would be great for Trent, given the fact that Whitworth has a SB ring.
DeleteHopefully this is the year for TW.
I hope Whitworth sent Jaquiski Tartt a thank you card for that SB ring.
DeleteHaha! I think the entire Rams team and La-La land sent Pop Tartt a thank you card.
DeletePurdy's contract details are in. $40M signing bonus, vet minimum salary in 2025, cap hit of $9.1M this year. Option bonuses in each of the next years to keep cap hits down.
ReplyDeleteI do find it interesting that his cash earnings dip in 2027 to $27M, then balloon to $55M in 2028. Not sure of the reasoning behind that. Though I suspect it is to do with the 2028 compensation fully guaranteeing on 1st April 2027. So basically the 49ers can get out after two years, but will cost them $115M for two years of service to do so.
They'll likely renegotiate a new deal at some point if he keeps playing like a top 10 quarterback.

Greg - and blog. I am going on a 2-month canoe trip up in the Northwest territory Canada, with another Vietnam Vet. Needless to say, I am driving up there and will not return till mid-August at the latest. Hopefully the Niners are still intact when I get back.
ReplyDeleteHave a safe trip my friend!
DeleteAwesome stuff, have a great trip under!

DeleteThe Nahanni or the Keele River? Have friends that did the Nahanni River, always regretted not going with them.
Enjoy your trip.
Geep
DeleteNeither of those rivers, you should have gone, running rivers or portage between lakes is something of itself. Western Canada is absolutely stunning. Also, there is very few people.
Have a great trip, UC.

With WR Aiyuk expected to miss time recovering from an ACL injury and WR Robinson facing a 3 game suspension. Should the 9ers sign free agent WR Amari Cooper?
ReplyDeleteCooper battled injuries throughout the 2024 season that limited his production. He should be available on a 1 year prove it contract. He has seven 1,000-yard seasons in his career, the most recent in 2023, when he posted a career-high 1,250 receiving yards. The previous year, he notched a career-best 9 TD receptions in his first season with the Browns.
The 5 time Pro Bowler should have enough left in his tank to make an impact with the 9ers, giving BP another reliable playmaker as the team looks to rebound from a disappointing 6W–11L season.
I'd rather give the young guys an opportunity.
DeleteSame.
DeleteOTAs begin Thurs. They will be open to the media. What/who are you most looking forward to seeing?
ReplyDeleteDBs vs WRs. Unpadded practices aren't usually conducive to seeing much from the big boppers, but keen to see how the DBs and WRs look.
DeleteCoach,
DeleteThe obvious guys are M. Williams and Collins. But I'll be paying attention to Nick Martin, CJ West, Jordan James, Upton Stout, Connor Colby, Isaiah Neyor, and last years UDFA TE Mason Pline who basically red-shirted as a rookie.
