The San Francisco 49ers are 20-6 when the Three Amigos are on the field together. If they stay healthy you can forget about a "rebuild" or expecting some kind of a sub-par season. This holy trinity can take us deep into the playoffs and no one can convince me otherwise.

ESPN sources: 49ers and Eagles are working to finalize a trade that will send edge rusher Bryce Huff to San Francisco for a mid-round pick. The trade cannot and would not be processed until after June 1. But both sides are working to make it happen, and Huff already has reworked his contract to help facilitate the trade. In San Francisco, Huff will be reunited with 49ers DC Robert Saleh, his former HC with the Jets.
Could be bad news for Robert Beal Jr.
I had high hopes for Beal. He had a below 4.5 40, and respectable stats for Georgia. I felt that 49ers coaching would eventually elevate him to become a very good backup. Beal is looking like a bubble player for sure.
DeleteCould take some pressure off of Mykel Williams too and allow him to develop.

Before the trade can get finalized next week, the Eagles restructured Bryce Huff’s contract this week. He was set to make about $17 million fully guaranteed this season from Philadelphia, but the Eagles now will take on only $9.05 million in salary, leaving the 49ers responsible for the remaining $7.95 million due to Huff this season.
That's a great deal salary cap-wise. Will wait to see what is the draft compensation.
DeleteDo you know the cap-hit next year? Seeing ~11M cap-hit next year.
Probably won't know next years cap hit until the deal is consummated. Draft compensation will be a mid-round pick. Think one of their compensatories.
DeleteHe'll be due $17M next year, but most of it is an option bonus with 4 void years, so his cap hit if they exercise the bonus would only be around $4M, with $13M dead money in 2027.
DeleteBut it's also completely non guaranteed.
Thanks Scooter.
DeleteThanks Scooter.
DeleteSo it is essentially a 1 year 8M deal for a mid-round pick.
On the flip side they could have kept Floyd and saved money against the cap.
DeleteWith huff you are banking on upside imo.
Floyd's pressure rate was unacceptable.
DeleteBryce Huff played on 82.2% of the Jets 3rd down defensive snaps in 2023 where he racked up a league leading 21.8% pressure rate
ReplyDeleteHe only played 30.2% on early downs opening up the door for rookie Mykel Williams to fill that role.
Nascar Package:
ReplyDeleteDE Nick Bosa
DT Mykel Williams
DT Yetur Gross-Matos
DE Bryce Huff
Razor
ReplyDeleteIMO, Bryce Huff never fit Vic Fangio's 3-4 D. Huff's performance against the run was the problem. Fangio acknowledged Huff's pass rush problems and said he had been working with him to develop his run defense skills.
Under Saleh's 4-3 defense, Huff had 10 sacks in 2023.....
Exactly. He'll be a designated pass rusher for the 49ers, primarily rushing from a wide position. That's his game, he's proven he's well suited to it. And it will allow the 49ers to push Williams into a 4i role on passing downs.
DeletePrecisely!
DeleteIts an interesting. As a pure pass rusher you would hope he is good. The interesting part is Fangio essentially runs a 5-2 with his OLB's out wide on the line of scrimmage.
DeleteSo from a pass rush stand point he would be rushing from the same location as a wide 9 edge.
The real difference is a will now have a LB behind him as a safety valve should he fail in his run game assignment.
Williams only played in 30% of Georgia's defensive snaps last year so I don't see him moving inside on passing downs happening all that much. He will be a stalwart on 1st and 2nd downs and will get occasional snaps on passing downs. Hopefully Huff can return to his 23 level of play. He is only 27 so he should have at least a couple of years at his physical peak.
ReplyDeleteCoach, Williams played a low share of snaps in part because he missed time due to injury, in part due to the heavy rotation of Georgia. But he wasn't an early down specialist - they rotated series, not based on down and distance. He also played a lot of 4i in college on both run and pass downs.
DeleteAfter the draft I said one of the main things I still had question marks over was where the pass rush was going to come from. Getting Huff is a big step towards answering that.
ReplyDeletePlan is now realized. Load up to stop the run with draft picks and then trade for your closer on 3rd and long.
DeleteBy signing Bryce Huff, JL has given the 9ers a pass rusher to complement Bosa.
ReplyDelete* There are still 2 areas of concern that needs to be addressed.
WR:
* Aiyuk is recovering from an ACL and MCL he tore week 7 of the
2024 season. It's likely he won't return until mid season.
* Ricky Pearsall is expected to carry a big load for the 9ers this season, but his 2025 offseason campaign won't be getting off to
a good start due to a tweaked hamstring, so it will be a surprise if he does anything in OTAs.
When pressed further, Shanahan added that Pearsall could return in time for mandatory minicamp, but there wouldn't be much to gain by putting him back on the field for such a short duration and the
question then is, will the hamstring continue to be a problem during
preseason also?
* Demarcus Robinson is expected to miss three games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, for a DUI received last November.
FREE AGENT WR's the 9ers could sign:
* Amari Cooper's 2024 season was a decline from his previous Pro Bowl caliber performance, due to injuries, with career-low numbers in receptions, yards, and yards per route run. He had 44 receptions for 547 yards and 4 touchdowns in 14 games split between the Browns and Bills. He should be available on cheap, one year prove it deal.
Safety:
* Malik Mustapha will miss the start of the 2025 NFL season due to a torn ACL injury he sustained in the final regular season finale against Arizona on January 5.
* Ji'Ayir Brown is expected to miss the team's OTA program and likely the start of the 2025 NFL season due to an ankle injury requiring surgery.
This leave the 9ers' starting safeties with Jason Pinnock and Richie Grant.
Free agent Safety Justin Simmons:
* Simmons has the speed and agility to cover deep and run routes, a valuable asset in Saleh's schemes. He has shown the ability to make plays on the ball and disrupt passing lanes, a crucial aspect of Saleh's defensive philosophy.
The 9ers should be able to sign Justin Simmons to a 1-year contract in the range of $5-8 million, possibly less, if the market for safeties softens. Simmons has been a free agent for a while, after being released by Denver. His price may be decreasing as the season approaches.
Just my opinion, but I don't think they'll look to add substantively to either position before TC. If they do, it will only be depth guys, not guys to compete for starting roles.
DeleteThey have already made the moves they wanted to make to address those positions, in FA and the draft.
Imo the position they are most likely to still add someone of note is along the OL. They've already tried bringing in OT depth and that hasn't exactly worked out, with one guy changing his mind on signing, one guy apparently not participating in OTAs, and the other apparently looking awful. Wouldn't shock me to see them look to acquire an OL via trade.
I hope I'm wrong, but I fear WR will be exposed as a weakness, especially early in the season, and I think the offense may end up disappointing throughout (relative to expectations and prior performances the past couple years). Hypothetical: Kittle gets slowed by a nagging injury (can't bring myself to pose a situation where he's out an extended period of time) and McCaffrey looks like what you would expect from a 28 year old RB with high miles and coming off a serious lower body injury. Who's consistently coming up with the chuck plays this offense thrives on?
DeleteScooter
ReplyDelete* I would agree with you with respect to the 9ers trading for O-Line.
* With Aiyuk likely out until mid season and Pearsall missing time
due to a hamstring, (that could continue being a problem into Pre season).
If the 9ers hope to make the playoffs, IMO, they'll need to win their
1st 3 - 4 games. to be successful, I believe the 9ers could use help at WR.
* With both S Malik Mustapha and Ji'Ayir Brown out with injuries,
IMO, the 9ers could also use some help at safety.
By the start of pre season, we should know if, or what position, the 9ers will need to add help at?
Yeah, I think if they add a notable WR or S it will happen after they've had a chance to see how the guys they've already got look.
DeleteA breakdown for the 9ers new edge rusher, Bryce Huff:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxr9E2UkPXU
Lombardi, reports that Huff is a true pass-rusher. Mykel, Collins, and CJ are more suited for stopping the run which of course was a hot mess last year.
ReplyDeleteDL views (iho) Huff as vying for the 3rd down PR specialist job. If you have time check out DLs Youtube take on Huff.
Haven't seen the vid, but yeah, I think DL is spot on. Huff will primarily be a designated pass rusher. It's the role he played for Saleh at the Jets.
DeleteYup, makes sense.
ReplyDeleteTWO 9ER ROOKIES THAT IMPRESSED DURING OTA'S:
ReplyDelete* WR Isaiah Neyor and RB Corey Kiner. Both Neyor and Kiner are UDFA signings, so I'll be surprised if either make the 53 this year.
* Should either one, or both, continue to impress I expect they'll make the PS and be candidates for moving up to the 53 if injuries
should occur.
* With a year of NFL coaching and experience in the 9er system,
both could be rotation players in 2026.
June boon: 9ers gain some extra salary cap help with start of the new month:
ReplyDelete* The 9ers’ post-June 1 releases of Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins become official on Monday, giving them some additional space against the cap.
* With the releases now official, the 9ers receive an extra $5.6 million in cap space for 2025.
We'll likely roll over the majority of our '25 cap into next year.
ReplyDeleteRazor
DeleteYes, I think you are correct
Looking up the difference in Bryce Huff's usage from '23 to '24 when rushing from a Wide-9:
ReplyDelete'23 snaps: 240
Pressure % rank: 1st
'24 snaps: 89
Pressure % rank: 9th
Opportunities looks to be the issue and not production.
Scheme fit matters.
DeleteHe also had a hand injury last season as confirmed by Vic Fangio.
DeleteLove the deal!
IT"S NOW OFFICIAL:
ReplyDeleteThe Eagles announced Monday they're dealing DE Bryce Huff to the 9ers in exchange for a conditional 5th Rd draft pick in 2026. The 9ers confirmed the deal minutes later, which is contingent on Huff passing a physical. The Eagles could receive a 4th Rd pick based on Huff's performance, reports CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones.
5th rounder plus they eat a chunk of his salary is good business.
DeleteRazor
DeleteYou are correct: Huff was set to make $17 million this year. The Eagles restructured Huff's contract to facilitate the trade!
Eagles will pay $9.05 million of Bryce Huff's salary, while the San Francisco 49ers will pay the remaining $7.95 million for the 2025 season
Absolutely good business by the 9ers FO......
So the 9ers will have a decision to make next year. If Huff has
10 (or more) sacks, do the 9ers extend him with a multi-year
contract at the same $17 mil p/y salary?
Could change but I see him departing and the Niners settling for a comp pick. Don't think they can afford a $17M SPR.
DeleteNo comp pick for the 49ers in that scenario as they would be releasing him.
DeleteI think if he has a good year they'd look at extending him, but for a bit less than $17M a year.
+100, Razor.
ReplyDeleteThe 49ers get a pass-rusher that has had his best production under Saleh. Not a bad day at the office.
DE Bryce Huff passed his physical.
ReplyDeleteDown goes T Nicholas Petit-Frere.
I still think OL is a place they may look to add a player of note before TC, most likely to compete for the swing OT spot. Unless they really think Dillard can provide useful competition.
DeleteAll laid out in front of Spencer. All he's gotta do is take it if he wants it.
DeleteI don't see them paying what McKivitz will command on the open market with another good year. Same goes for JJ. If you added Huff you'd have north of $55M in all three.
Wasn't Dee Ford $17M APY? I think they'd prefer to invest in that position over RT or WR if Huff proved to be worth it.
I agree on Burford just beeding to take the opportunity. But I think the opportunity he takes will be one of the OG spots.
DeleteI know the coaches have said he's getting training/ reps at OT, and he'll be in the mix for the swing OT role, but they've also said nothing is set in stone. OG is the current opening for a starter. If he's good enough he should take it
I don't understand how you think Burford's competing at OG when both Foerster and Shanahan said they no longer see him as an OG and that he'll compete for swing OT. Not to mention they got OG's up the ass without Burford.
DeleteSimple. They didn't say what you think they said. They said Burford was in the mix for the swing OT job, along with Pleasants, but nothing is set in stone. And immediately after those comments they tried to sign Humphries and did sign Dillard and NPF.
DeleteI heard 'em say they no longer see Burford as an OG.
DeleteWhen and where?
DeleteEarly media access prior to the draft.
DeleteHas anyone heard exactly what Albert Collins injury is and when he is likely to be back?
ReplyDeleteCalf. Not considered serious.
DeleteIn Trent Williams' absence at OTA's, the starting left tackle was Spencer Burford.
ReplyDeleteRazor
ReplyDeleteThe 9ers mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 10-11.
We should see how the 9ers use Burford when TW is back.
If Spencer Burford isn't the starting swing OT this season it's gonna be on him. Nobody they bring in knows the system like he does and his only competitor is Austen Pleasants.
DeleteShanahan and Foerster have been clear that Burford's position is at OT. I agree with Razor on this one. It's Burford's job to keep or lose in TC.
ReplyDeleteCan you guys link me where they clearly say he is now definitely an OT and no longer an OG please. I don't recall hearing that and can't find it anywhere.
DeleteJust to be clear, I'm not saying Burford isn't the top swing OT candidate. I'm sure he currently is. I'm also sure that's where he's currently getting all his reps, to get him acclimatised to the role.
ReplyDeleteBut the open starting spot is at OG. If he's also the best option for that position, the starter is more valuable than the backup role, no matter where along the line it is.
It makes no sense to me to not let him compete for that spot too. He has the most experience at OG in this system of anyone on the roster.
And I can't recall hearing anyone say he won't be part of that competition. And given the team immediately went to the FA market to add more competition at OT after the draft, it makes me believe the 49ers aren't willing to rule him out as winning the OG spot.
I don't have the link Scooter but I watched them both say exactly that moving forward Spencer Burford is no longer considered an OG. The only proof I have is my eyewitness.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing we watched the same media sessions, and that wasn't my recollection of what was said. 🤷♂️
DeleteI can't find it either, which is very annoying!
I'd like to see Spencer have success as their swing OT not only for the team but to show he's not gonna let his SB mistake define him. He seems like a good dude.
DeleteSwing OT or starting OG - I don't mind where he finds success with the 49ers.
DeleteBartch seems the most likely candidate to win the LG job and that's the role he's been given at OTAs. But it's still very much a position up for grabs. Let TC determine who the best fit is.
I mind given we got a shit ton of OG's. Spencer was a good OT at the college level. To have changed Foerster's mind about being one in the NFL is impressive as far as I'm concerned. I'm hoping it works out for him.
DeleteThere's a difference between having a lot of bodies at a position and a lot of viable options. Atm, if Burford isn't in the mix, the realistic options you have are Bartch, Hennessey, Zakelj and Colby.
DeleteBartch is living off one good game in highly unusual circumstances, Hennessey had one decent year at centre but was then benched at OG and has been bad since, Zakelj has never done anything, and Colby is a raw 7th rounder. Maybe a competent starter emerges, but that is not an inspiring group.
If Burford isn't given a crack at that job that says a lot, and nothing positive.
Hennessey is competing for OG only according to Shanahan. No competiton for Brendel.
DeleteIn a perfect world I think they'd love to see Colby win the LG job and Bartch fill that Vet off the bench role of Feliciano and Brunskill. Zakelj might just end up winning that job.
Jordan Watkins getting good buzz in OTAs so far.
ReplyDelete49ers OL coach Chris Foerster says Jake Brendel’s 2024 season was the best from any center in the Shanahan era with the 49ers:
ReplyDelete“Fewest amount of missed assignments. His pass protection was the highest grade, his run blocking grade, pass blocking grade, and his mental errors were the best they’ve been since he’s been here. They’ve been better than any center that we’ve had playing here up to this point.”
I guess he is not using PFF stats
ReplyDeleteAlex Mack, Daniel Kilgore, and Weston Richburg were very good Centers. Not sure if Brendel has reached that level just yet. Brendel has elevated his game, but he's not where the aforementioned are right now.
ReplyDeleteI'm not gonna be that guy that questions Foerster's assessment given I'm not qualified and all he's done is proven himself. He's Shanahan's right hand man!
DeleteI'd like to see Brendel have back to back good years. That's all.
ReplyDeletespeaking on the Oline... Guy Haberman had a great breakdown on SF's Oline speaking with Jeff Schwartz
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PlQyev_koQ
In short the data basically says SF could be a wild card team with their O-line if their line stays healthy. Schwartz basically said SF if healthy might be a top 17 Line, but they are cooked if they lose anyone.
But he also argued that Brendal might be good enough, it is a good listen and maybe you will take away something else.
I've stuck up for this OL consistently and praised Foerster's work but it doesn't do any good for those perpetuating a popular narrative among the casuals; our OL sucks, Foerster needs to go, etc.
DeleteDepth at iOL is fine. OT is where it gets thin.
DeleteAgreed. I think they can get by at iOL with what they have, but the OT depth is worrying.
DeleteIF Burford affirms their decision to move on from Moore as the swing OT there won't really be any worries as long as Williams doesn't suffer a serious injury. Now if both OT's were to go down simultaneously then yes we'd be in big doo doo, but so would every team in the NFL.
DeleteShoup,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the video. Schwartz put emphasis on the lack of depth at along the Oline. He highlighted the potential issue if players like Trent or Punni miss time.
I believe that the FO will look to add a FA Oline player at some point during TC or in-season for more depth.
Good news is they got OG's that can play OT in a pinch.
DeleteAES, I agree, I expect to see them look to add another OL before the season begins.
DeleteScooter,
ReplyDeleteI believe that you also brought this up a couple of weeks ago.
I did. I don't think it's for nothing that they are strongly believed to have been targeting an OT in round 3, or that they looked into signing 3 veteran OTs shortly after the draft, of which they added 2.
DeleteAs a contrast to my concerns and what Geoff Schwartz believes, Krueger and Dieter were talking the OL today and both agreed that the OL depth is much better than most believe, and that the likes of Bartch, McKivitz, Burford and in particular Pleasants looked fantastic in OTAs. And that Brendel was moving waaay better this year than he did this time last year.
ReplyDeleteDieter has been the Prophet of Doom regarding the 49ers all year.
DeleteYeah, I've not agreed with a lot of his takes this offseason. He was big on the Jed's being cheap train. And aside from Mykel and West, was pretty down on the draft as well.
DeleteBut sounds like he's been impressed with how guys have looked in OTAs.
* The two 9er O-Line who have impressed the most during OTA's is Connor Colby and Austen Pleasants.
ReplyDeleteWhile still very early in the season, and the pads have yet to come
on, If both continue to impress in TC (in July) I look for both to provide competition as back up. Pleasants at OT and Colby at OG.
* Pleasants served as a rotational LOT for the 49ers in the final two games of the 2024 season.
* With the departure of Jaylon Moore, the backup OT position is open, and Pleasants is a contender for the role. He's one of the top candidates to serve as a backup to Trent Williams and Colton McKivitz.
* Pleasants has been playing OT during the 49ers' OTA's while TW
is not in camp. He is specifically considered a candidate to compete for backup tackle positions.
QUESTION FOR THE BLOG:
ReplyDeleteIMO, the 9ers never seemed intent on re-signing OG Aaron Banks
especially after he received a 4 year, $77 million free-agent deal with the GB Packers. No way the Niners were going to pay that for an IOL.
* MY QUESTION THEN IS THIS: Did the 9ers feel they had an even better option readily available in OG Ben Bartch?
* The 9ers acquired Bartch in 11/ 2023, after Jacksonville waived him and demoted him to the PS. Up to then, Bartch had 20 starts with the Jags. With Banks no longer in the picture, the Bartch pick up might be considered a coup for the Niners?
We'll never pay an OG top money. I don't even see Puni getting paid. Moving forward I hope we take the same approach to the WR position.
DeleteI think they knew they weren't retaining Banks all the way back to last offseason, and they drafted the guy they expected to be his replacement last year - Puni. Remember, Puni wasn't expected to be the RG last year. It was meant to be Burford or Feliciano. But injuries gave Puni the opportunity and the rest is history.
DeleteI'm convinced the plan last offseason was Puni to be LG this year with Burford at RG, unless a better option presents itself.
So come this offseason they were more than comfortable letting Banks go knowing Puni has proven he can start and AT WORST they have a guy they feel can be a competent starting OG in Burford.
But I also think they now believe Bartch can be a better option at LG than Burford.
So anyway, long way of saying that yes, the 49ers were happy to let Banks go and had planned for it for over a year. And yes, Bartch could be a coup, but I don't think his emergence was they key factor in letting Banks go.
Scooter
ReplyDeleteFor the most part I concur with your assessment with respect to Banks, Puni and Bartch. But the previous posts above, raised some questions. So I went back and looked at the sequence of events that transpired with respect to Burford, Feliciano and injuries that gave Puni the opportunity to take over ROG.
I also looked at when the 9ers acquired Bartch in 11/ 2023, and
what did they see in him, when they acquired him from the Jaguars
PS in 11/2023?
* Like you, I don't think Barchs' emergence was they key factor letting Banks go, but it does raise the question: WHAT DID THE 9ERS KNOW, AND WHEN DID THEY KNOW IT?
I don't think it really needs too deep an interrogation. As with most guys, they obviously liked what they saw before signing him, enough to give him a chance, and then throughout the end of 23 and the 24 offseason/ TC he did enough to convince them he should be kept on the 53 in 2024. But not enough to earn a starting spot.
DeleteBut, like Puni, injuries gave him a shot and he performed well in that brief period before he too got hurt.
So now he'll be given an opportunity to compete for the starting LG spot and prove his cameo in 24 was something he can do consistently.
Bartch was highly recommended to Foerster by his good friend George Warhop and that's why they got him.
ReplyDeleteRazor
ReplyDeleteThanks...That's the missing bit of info I was looking for, why the 9ers acquired Barch from the Jaguars.
If Sigle is as smart and versatile as the DB coaches say he is, is there a chance all 6 defensive players the 49ers drafted see significant playing time this season?
ReplyDeleteThat would be unprecedented if it happens.
DeleteYep. The opportunity is definitely there though. All 6 are vying for roles that are open.
DeleteJaire Alexander released by the Packers.
ReplyDeleteI think we should take a long hard look at him and sign for a 1yr deal. Cornerback room has no depth if DeMo goes down.
In three out of the last four seasons, Alexander played in no more than seven games, and averaged six games a season. While only 28 years old, he isn’t the investment people think he is. I wouldn’t touch him.
DeleteAlso, had an in-house gm suspension........ I suppose we'll find out real soon where the secondary stands- just hope JA doesn't go to LA or AZ in case he can stay healthy.
DeleteGames played in the last 3 years:
DeleteJoey Bosa - 28
Jaire Alexander - 23
If healthy he is a lock-down corner. That is why a 1 yr prove-it deal makes sense IMO.
"If healthy he is a lock-down corner. That is why a 1 yr prove-it deal makes sense IMO".
DeleteI get the impression football isn't important enough to him and he's a bit of a headcase.
I think they were willing to pay Joey $8M-9M. Is Alexander gonna play for for $5M on a one year prove it deal cuz that's the only way I see them considering it. I'd still take a pass. I like our depth in the secondary. Maybe down the road an injury or two forces our hand but right now, hell no!

CB is a weird one in that they already have heaps of guys, but no established guys after DeMo.
DeleteMy main concern is what they do if Green has a Sophomore slump.
I highly doubt they look at Alexander unless the guys they have look bad in camp.
There were reports of Green having a bad week, but not sure of the source (believe it may have been GC) - but he indicated Luter looked solid.
Delete* My break-even cost for section 124 is $265/seat this season......
I didn't see anyone report Green looked bad, but I did notice he was the DB getting beat on a few of the highlight reels from OTAs. My comment was more just a hypothetical on what they do if he takes a step backwards this year.
DeleteYeah, I don't see the 49ers making any moves (if needed) until a few weeks into TC. The young players are in a good position to make some noise in this TC. Hopefully, they play well enough to shut the door on any possible FO moves.
ReplyDeleteI don't see them signing anyone of consequence.
DeleteYup.
ReplyDelete
