Defenses have been dropping 8 into coverage vs Brock Purdy at a 2x higher rate than they do against other QBs, and he's still leading the NFL in passing yards on throws that travel over 10 yards (581 yards). I'm expecting more of the same from the Patriots defensive game plan. The key to this game is going to be stopping the Patriots big running backs and the elevation of Anderson from the practice squad could be a big part of that solution. Offensively the 49ers need to establish their own running attack and stick with it. I like the 49ers over the Patriots, 31-6. Go Niners!
Niners roster moves:
Placed on IR: DT Javon Hargrave (triceps), LB Curtis Robinson (ACL)
Signed to active roster: DE Sam Okuayinonu Elevated from practice squad: DT Evan Anderson, S Jaylen Mahoney
Would like to see more Man coverage and Hufunga blitzing.... make Brissett beat you- take the run away immediately...... hoping to see some Guerrendo- need to lighten Mason's load a bit
ReplyDeleteSounds like a plan. Maybe get Guerendo out in the open space via check down and see if he can take one to the house.
DeletePerhaps we should be concerned about Guerrendo at this point, no? ha ha....... sadly. Was fun to see the 5-man front......
DeleteHe wasn’t starting material at Wisconsin. Would like to see Taylor instead.
DeleteIt's not Purdy that I'm concerns me. It's the other facets of the team which you mentioned. Aiyuk needs to discover himself and Shanahan needs to see if Cowing can offer more than Bell. If STs falters again, it's time to take a serious look at coaching.
ReplyDeleteI've been calling for Schneider's head for over a year, but I don't think Shanahan has ever fired a coach during the season.
DeleteYup.
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to tell the 49ers that preseason was over 4 weeks ago. Way too much sloppy play from them today. STs needs immediate attention!
ReplyDeleteThe O line was terrible today. If BP was not as incredibly mobile as he is the 9ers would be 0-4.
ReplyDeletePurdy's elite reactionary quickness mitigates a lot of the OL's pressures.
ReplyDeleteTrue. But if there's an area in his game that could use some discipline, it's throwing into good defensive coverage. Kittle bailed him out with his great acrobatic catch over 2 defenders for a TD.
ReplyDeleteBut Brook will get better at this with experience. This was a very win given they're sloppy play. Also, nice to see CMC back on the sidelines.
It's *NOT throwing into
ReplyDeleteA win is a win, and worth celebrating. But this win did little to alleviate any concerns about the areas that have let the team down the past few weeks. Still a lot of areas that need to improve.
ReplyDeleteSam O might be the player the Niners have been looking for.
ReplyDeleteYep... impact player. Was the 2nd best D-Lineman after Bosa.
DeleteReminds me of Omenihu.
DeleteThis was a "feel-good" win. Hope this win gets the D back on track. Impressed with Sam Okuayinonu, he is a very good fit for the D-Line. Hope MRIs on Fred Warner (aka Super Man) are negative.
ReplyDeleteFor the Offense, we have to clean up a lot of things. Red-Zone efficiency, Taming Brock's gunslinger mentality, Mason's "ball security" issues. But Jennings, Mason, Purdy continue to impress.
Special Teams: Week-in Week-out, I have the same level of fear and loathing when I watch ST. Surely Schneider is on the shortest leash!
How cool would it be if Okauyinonu could get to Elvis Dumervil level?
DeletePFF's highest-graded player in the NFL right now is Fred Warner (95.9). #49ers
ReplyDeleteSince the start of last season
ReplyDeleteBrock Purdy Patrick Mahomes
14-6 W-L 14-6
5,410 Pass Yards 5,087
36/13 Pass TD/INT 33/19
111.3 Pass Rating 92.1
Top grade on the offense yesterday went to Dominick Puni (85.8) who did not allow a single QB pressure in 30 pass blocking snaps. #49ers
ReplyDeleteRazor,
ReplyDeletePuni is Gold. Hope the 49ers can find another Oline diamond in next years draft.
I actually think that we should sign Zakelj to a multi-year contract when he is not a starter. That will be cheaper....and similar to McKivitz. I think his ceiling is high.
DeleteNext Year's Oline - Williams/Burford/Zakelj/Puni/McKivitz
We can then draft two mid-round OLs (true to form). We are not gonna draft another OL in the first.
There might be 12 players with 1st round grades in the upcoming draft.
DeleteRazor/ Anyone
DeleteWhat positions do you expect the 9ers will address with their
2025 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft picks?
AES
DeleteA RT please, to compete with McKivitz, who's tied for the most pressures allowed through the NFL 1st 4weeks @14)!
JL should be looking for another RT, if for no other reason to
protect (their soon to be) $60 Mil P/Y QB.....
GEEP,
Delete1st round's gonna be DL. They will double-dip on this group is what I feel. Hargrave was an expensive mistake...while Drake Jackson/Robert Beal Jr haven't panned out either.
2nd Round might be Corner, just because we have so many FAs there. Demo, Ward, Yiadom, Ya-Sin, Ambry all are FAs after this year. We only have Green and the perpetually inactive Luter Jr on contract.
3rd Round will be OL... another guard or center....similar to Puni. I don't think KS/JL/Foerster will ever spend premium draft picks on OL. Just based on Foresters interview on how they are comfortable drafting players with performance "above the line".
We have two 3rd round picks.....so we have to get an RB in the 3rd round. :p
Note: All conjecture at this point...too early to think about draft picks.
PS: Glad the 'Hawks lost today. I might have over-estimated their D.
Mugeek
DeleteI like your position selections. * I see 9ers drafting 1) EDGE, 2) CB, 3A) DT and 3B) IOL (C or OG). If the 9ers draft another RB, it will depend on CMC's long term health.
* With 4th, 5th and 6th Rd picks I see a CB, OL and a TE, in no particular order. I'd also like to see the 9ers draft a RT
with the 5th rd comp pick, to compete with McKivitz.
I see the 9ers geting 2025 Comp picks for:
* A 3rd rd pick for DeMeco Ryans to Texans
* A 5th rd pick for Sam Darnold to Vikings
A 7th rd pick for Charlie Woerner to Atlanta.

ReplyDelete@NextGenStats
Nick Bosa averaged a 0.51-second pass rush get-off…
The quickest by any defender in a game over the last SEVEN #NFL SEASONS! 👀🤯
There were a couple times when I thought Bosa would be flagged for offsides. But Bosa is just that GOOD!
ReplyDeleteI believe Bosa had the greatest 1 sack game ever. With just a little bit of luck he could have had 4 or 5 sacks.
ReplyDeleteNot wanting to defend the OL much because they were and gave been pretty poor all season, but part of the reason why is the way defenses are playing Purdy, which is forcing him to hold the ball longer and look for throws downfield more than last year.
ReplyDeleteTALK ABOUT MORE THROWS DOWNFIELD:
ReplyDelete* Purdy had 5 passes of over 20+ yards (1 called back due to a penalty), while connecting on deep balls to all 3 of his top receivers in a successful day in the air for the 9ers. Overall, he had an average of 14.5 intended air yards per pass, easily leading the NFL in Week 4.
* He also averaged 10.7 yards per attempt and 19.2 yards per completion on the day, en route to throwing for 288 yards in the win.

ReplyDeleteGoff 18-18 pass completions. But their defense is suspect.
ReplyDeleteQBs like Goff, G. Smith, A. Smith and B. Mayfield are great examples of the fact that QBs all mature at different rates. I know a lot of fans who thought Goff was a no talent mediocre QB and now he is elite maybe top 5 to 7. He is a semi local kid to me from Marin Catholic High School and Cal. I have always rooted for him when he wasn't playing the 9ers.
ReplyDelete100%. Sometimes guys just need to be allowed to develop.
DeleteI wasn't a fan of Goff as a player coming out of college, but not because of a lack of talent. All about how reliant he was coming out of college on his HC telling him what he's seeing. Given he was going to be taken #1 I didn't think he'd work out.
He's been lucky to get to play under McVay. Turned his career trajectory around. And now that he's experienced he is no longer reliant on his HC/ OC, and his talent can show.
Scooter
DeleteVery true! But sometimes the problem is the HC and the system (or lack of), that he runs..
An.Example: Sam Darnold playing for the NYJ under HC Todd Bowles and Sam Darnold playing for the Vikings under HC Kevin O'Connell.
I'd also give some credit to the 9er coaching staff.
Coach,
DeleteGoff was the last NFL successful Cal Bears QB. Before him of course was Aaron Rodgers. At the moment there's a kid at Cal named Mendoza that has looked pretty good. But it's to early to tell if he will be the next Cal QB to find success in the NFL.
GEEP, yep Darnold is looking like another example of a guy that just needed time to develop.
DeleteYou are also absolutely right that situation matters. Not many young QBs can go to a bad roster and/ or bad coach and find success. That's a recipe that has ruined many a young QBs career.
AES
ReplyDeleteNow that Cal joined the ACC, it'll be interesting to see how the cross country travel and time zone changes affects his games against Florida State, Pitt, Wake Forest and SMU.
Mendozas looked good, after a 21-14 road victory against Auburn, but HC Wilcox also deserves some credit.
Mendoza does look good. Regarding Goff, McVay lost the Super Bowl, not him- they could have offset the blitz by countering w screens, etc..... dink n dunk down the field..... I am happy Goff is where he is at and enjoying success- he had a good reputation at MC and his dad is a great guy.
DeleteI also wonder if Miami called about Dobbs.......... Saleh and McDaniels seats may both be getting warm.
dip,
DeleteSaleh yes but I think McDaniels gets a pass because of QB health. If one or both of them were fired I would love to see KS bring them back.
I agree, namely w McDaniels.... Saleh was slow w adjustments and didn't blitz enough, in my opinion. Adams to Jets would be interesting, but WASH to could make a lot of sense..... Rams would be scary.
DeleteGEEP,
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point. I'd like to see Cal do well playing games outside of their old Pac 10 Division. Winning in other states could bring more attention to their football program with the hope's of college bound players coming to Cal. Mendoza came from Miami.
Been checking out some of the noise coming from the Raiders regarding an unhappy DeVonte Adams. He sure would look nice in 49ers Red&Gold. Hopefully, the 49ers do their due diligence if Adams wants out of Vegas.
ReplyDeleteAES,
DeleteThe rumor I have heard is Adams for BA. What do you think of that trade?
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteAES
DeleteNothing would make me happier than JL and the 9ers getting
DeVonte Adams into a 9er Red&Gold uniform....BUT......
* If the 9ers decided to trade with the Raider for him, what draft picks would they have to give up for him?
PER SPOTRACT:
He's 32 Y/O in 2924 season and his contract run thru 2026.
* His 2024 salary: $16,890,000. How much will the 9ers pay?
* His 2025 salary: $35,640,000 + $510K roster bonus
* His 2026 salary: $35,640,000 + $510K roster bonus
With all the players salaries for the 9er star players, plus the
~$60 Mil for BP in 2025, can Paraag Marathe figure out a way
to squeeze in in and still remain under the salary cap?
I would love that! And I believe DeVonte would as well. He's 31yrs old and still is a top 3 WR. Aiyuk, has so far shown that he is not anywhere near the contract he signed. Adam's won't come cheap, but the 49ers are good at figuring out the logistics.
DeleteIf they're going to trade for a high priced vet, I would rather a good DT or RT.
DeleteScooter,
DeleteThat makes sense. But if CMC has reoccurring issues with his Tendinitis, Adams could help mitigate the loss of receiving yards that a healthy CMC gives the offense. Also, Aiyuk's underwhelming play definitely makes DeVonte very appealing.
If Deebo, Aiyuk, JJ, Pearsall, Conley and Cowing aren't enough, the 49ers have bigger problems than anything Adams can fix.
DeleteThat can apply to other areas on the team as well. LB, OL, EDGE etc. Adams would provide an immediate upgrade over any WR not named Deebo. If he's available the 49ers should do their due diligence at giving him a serious look.
DeleteAES, just my opinion, but I don't see any other position on this team with as much quality at both starter and depth as WR. So no, I don't think the same applies for other positions.
DeleteScooter
DeleteThere is a DT in 2025 draft that IMO, would be a great 9er fit.
DT tyleik Williams Ohio St. At 6'3" X 327, 40 = 4.68s. 10-yard split = 1.62s! Great time for a guy 327 pounds.
Too early to know what round he'll go in but looks like 2nd
Rd for now, but with a good season and Combine, I wouldn't
be surprised to see him move up to 1st?
Check him out and see if you agree.
Niners signed Jalen Graham off the WTF PT.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't distinguish himself with the 49ers, but I thought he'd go the PS. Nice to have him back.
ReplyDeleteJust looking at a college highlight reel of Graham's. Quite a playmaker. Could be a very good move for them down the line.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPFy6-h8LlU
Trading for Adams makes no sense to me on any level.
ReplyDeleteThe most likely team to trade for Adams: The NY Jets
Delete* The Jets traded for QB Rogers.
* Jets had Super Bowl hopes, but are 2-2 after a 10 to 9 defeat by Denver.
* HC Saleh is on the hot seat to win
* The Jets offense needs help. Adams developed into one of the NFL's best WR in 8 seasons with Rogers in Green Bay.
I agree we don’t need Adams. Aiyuk will get better and we still have Deebo and Jennings, not to mention the new guys. Personally I don’t see Adams as an upgrade on Aiyuk when you consider age and contract.
DeleteTotally agree.
DeleteAs it is, we have too many mouths to feed. Adams will quickly become a malcontent once he starts getting around 3-5 targets per game here and is asked to block.
Plus, under no circumstances should Jennings be deprived of targets. Should be a meritocracy and JJ should be WR2.
Only places which make sense to me for Adams are Jets (due to Rodgers connection), Saints (if he still wants to play with Carr) and Chiefs (god-forbid). Hoping Raiders have more sense than to trade Adams intra-division.
If you have some free time, Matt Maiocco has an interesting take on
ReplyDeletewhere the 9ers rank on a list of potential Adams trade suitors.
https://sports.yahoo.com/where-49ers-rank-list-potential-152458794.html
* The Raiders informed teams around the league that they're open to trading Adams, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday, citing sources, after Adams reportedly requested a trade.
* Maiocco feels the 9ers rank far down the list of teams in need of another WR for the reasons as I pointed out to AES.
His salary, after signing Aiyuk to a five-year, $134.1 million contract including an already-paid $23 million signing bonus and a list of scheduled FA(s) who figure to cash in. Most IMPORTANTLY, the 9ers need to pay BP and still stay under the salary cap with the salaries of the other 9er star players.
Maiocco feels the 9ers need to get rookie WR Pearsall on the field
and see what he can contribute, before adding another high-priced veteran WR to KS system.
* That looks like Maiocco agrees with you Razor...That trading for WR Adams makes no sense to him on any level.
DeVonte will likely join Rodgers in New York. As far as 49ers, no gain, no loss.
DeleteNiners have signed Terique Owens to the PS. Bell on the way out?
ReplyDeleteOr, could be insurance against Pearsall (whose rehab might have a setback) or Cowing (who seems to be injured again in limited snaps and is probably not in football shape yet).
DeleteI can understand Shanahan's fascination with Bell who has two things going for him:
1) He can play all 3 WR spots in practice (although seems to have the Yips in games).
2) He is on a rookie contract for 3 more years including this one.
Well reasoned.
DeleteSam Okuayinonu 6'1" 269
ReplyDelete31 bench reps
4.77 (40 yard)
Elvis Dumervil 6'1" 257
30 bench reps
4.75 (40 yard)
Wow, that surprises me - he looks bigger that Dumervil.
DeleteRazor
ReplyDelete3 rookies that contributed against NE:
* Mustapha registered five total tackles — one solo,
* Anderson sacked NE QB, Jacoby Brissett, forced a fumble and recorded two tackles. One for a loss.
* Puni did't allow a BP pressures the entire game. I can't believe
he's a rookie...He doesn't play like one, he plays like a Vet.
GOOD NEWS:
ReplyDeleteKS says DT Kalia Davis has been designated to return to practice after stating season on IR.
The 9er O-line should have a good day protecting BP and help control the clock by running the ball. Mason should get 100+ yards and a TD, as Arizona has trouble stopping the run. Their D--line has allowed 146.5 rushing yards p/game, the 5th most in the NFL . * The Cardinals’ pass rush is ranked WORST in NFL for Generating Pressure and stopping the Run!
ReplyDelete* ROLB: Dennis Gardeck leads Arizona in almost every pass-rushing category, with 6 pressures, 3 sacks and 5 tackles for loss.
* LOLB: Zaven Collins, has 4 pressures and 1 sack.
* LDE: L.J. Collier, has 4 pressures but no sack.
* Stop the 2 Line backers and BP should have enough time to find his receivers, while putting up some good numbers.
* On Defense, the 9ers front 7 have to control Arizona QB Kyler Murray! Keep him in the pocket and stop him from picking up 1st downs with his feet. CONTROL MURRAY AND THE 9ERS WIN!
* The 9er DB's have to limit rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. and keep him out of the end zone. The No. 4 overall draft pick (out of Ohio State), has caught 15 passes for 243 yards and 4 TDs, tying him for the overall NFL lead with Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson.
* If the 9ers take care of business and establish a commanding lead, KS should rest the starters and keep them fresh for a short week against Seattle, at Seattle. A win against Arizona and a win against the Seattle will tie the 9ers for 1st place in the NFC West.
I suspect this will be a high scoring game. I don't trust the 49ers defense right now, and the Cards offense with Murray at QB feels like the type of offense that will find some explosive plays against it.
DeleteSo the 49ers are going to need to take advantage of the Cards defense.
Scooter
DeleteDo you believe the 9ers can run the ball with Mason, control the clock and keep Murray, Harrison and the Cards offense on the bench?
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteYeah I do, but I still think it will be high scoring.
DeleteKyle Juszczyk just called out G. Cohn for being a little perv. saying he hangs around players lockers while they are changing. At this moment I couldn't love Juice any more.

ReplyDelete@mattbarrows
Unfreaking believable. Looks like its just going to be one of those years. Hopefully the Warriors will be entertaining this year.
DeleteThe hits keep coming. YGM could play both inside and outside. He will be missed. :(
DeleteIs it expected to be season ending?
DeleteI still think if the team can get through the first half of the season and stay in striking distance, they can make a run at the end of the year.
Not season ending.
DeleteI will lean on Trent Williams' response on the question of injuries a couple of weeks ago, that this is time for the next man up to capitalize on the opportunity. May it start tomorrow.
ReplyDelete
